Navy SEAL Reviews Shotgun Ammo | Tactical Rifleman

- TR Nation! This week I brush over available rounds for a 12 Gauge shotgun. I am not reviewing any specific ammunition but if our loyal viewers have a specific brand they want tested, leave a comment and we will be more than happy to do a review!
Now, I know the fight continues over the best weapon for home defense but in reality, you defend your home with the firearm you have, not the one you want. Shotgun ammunition comes in many shapes and sizes and when trained to utilize said ammunition accordingly, can provide for a very lethal (or non-lethal) option for home defense or training.
What a shotgun ammunition review boils down to is what is right for you for hunting, home defense or sport. In my experience, I have found that you want to buy the minimally effective round for the task. I don’t get into shooting and analyzing each individual round but whatever round gets the most comments/questions, I will absolutely do a video providing a further deep dive into that round and its capabilities.
In the SEAL Teams, shotguns were used primarily for breaching wood doors at the hinges. I carried one for a while during Jungle Warfare to defend against front side enemy contact as a point man. This tactic was useful to get multiple rounds off and heads down while we got the big guns online. For the record, I also carried an M-4 with a M203 launcher.
I hope the video was helpful and as always, I look forward to your comments.

Lmfao. “When an assailant enters your home unwillingly.” I’m pretty sure at that point the assailant has become the kidnapped.
Whats this mean
@@Fvckyou123 just a Freudian slip. 2:40
My dad always told me that slugs are like freight trains . Theylle go through whatever is in front of them
For “home defence” I use 12 gauge 2 3/4 inch 8 pellet low recoil “00” buck.
How often do you use it?
Im with a 3” 10 pellets 000
"Nick your old lady in the earlobe and you'll never hear the end of it."
Good overview of 12 gauge options. Solid content gents, thank you all!
So...in other words you gave no recommendation and just listed off the different rounds?
Johnathan Campbell I mean it’s up to you to decide what you think best suits your needs. For home defense I’d say buckshot because you get a spread but it’s also still very devastating. You’re less likely to miss and it still has plenty of stopping power
TopWater TV in a house the spread is pretty much nonexistant unless you have a 6 inch barrel
I think he was just presenting the diff rounds and information about said rounds. That way you could make your own decision about what would serve you best.
He gave you the info, now make your own decision on what's best for your situation. The brain is an amazing three-pound organ that controls all functions of the body, interprets information from the outside world, Use yours.
Federal Personal Defense is what I use. I believe it's #4 buck (20 gauge)
Whenever I pull my shotgun at work I find myself yelling "see you in St. Louie, screwy."
so simple and direct, I love it.
Buckshot: exists
Dragons breath rounds: Are you in charge here?

I swear you guys coincidentally keep uploading when I'm working on my computer.

"Hellooo" 🤣🤣
A shotty is a must in every man arsenal, I have three! 🔥😍🇺🇸👌🏽👏🏽
Yeah me too, i own a semi automatic Mossberg 9200 and a Mossberg 500, a stoeger M3500 and my beloved tomahawk s17 and all the time favorite tomahawk LD5, those are my shotguns i love shotguns pretty much
@Kevin Suleiman I know right. Rooting for other men in sports and wearing their name on your back is way better
Good video. Thank you for sharing your knowledge with us.
Which one stops Corona in its tracks?
4 gauge should send it to the shadow realm
Corona cant survive without a host so ill say a slug
One year later you dummies still think a virus exists?!?
For a single person at home, a shotgun is great. When a family is in the house I don't think I'll use a shotgun, I would never forgive myself if I had a stray pellet wound my loved ones.
3" slug
Really would have loved to see this video show each round in action with your thoughts after.
Keep up the great work!
Any ammo is better than no ammo!
As always nice video and great information👍👍👍.Carry on the good work.God Bless and Protects you all🙏🙏....
Thanks for keeping it simple.
Gotta love the old fashioned shotty.
15 pellet 3 inch 00 Federal in the chamber, 12 pellet 00 in the mag. I use it only for dealing with housebreakers and they have to get past me to get to my gal. My barricade position has an AR15 PDW in .300 with 30 rd mag full of SSTs and 4 xtra mags. Also have two major caliber handguns next to the bed
I've got some buck and ball rounds loaded up alternating with slugs, might take those to the range and see how they do.
#1 Buck is the best choice for 2 legged critters. Everyone is moving away from 00 now...
YZFoFittie
I really haven't heard many people using that load for hd. Many I hear use 00 or #4 buck.
Todd K that's because only people who know better will know about the FBI testing. Better penetration and hit probability...
YZFoFittie
I'll have to look into that. Thanks for pointing that out.
I'm fine with#4 buck or 00 buck
#4 is nice too!
Where y'all from? The naked trees and sweatshirts says its cold? I'm in South Florida HOT as HELL right now. Great video!
I think they are in Kentucky.
Here's my take...
A 12 gauge is a great home defense gun. I will use #4 buck. Why? Still pulverizes a man at close range but has less penetration than a slug and 00 buck. Even some of the older homes that have more solid walls I still wouldn't use a slug. Slugs have a lot of penetration and can still carry massive amounts of energy as they penetrate barriers. If one is unsure, watch some videos from Paul Harrell, he has some great hd videos and does some of the best tests to date on CZcams. To be realistic, to find yourself in a hd situation and a hostage situation is pretty slim, but that's up to whoever to assess that and make their best educated decision. I would also practice using different shots and pattern them to determine if that's what I want. A back up to this question is an AR-15 and there are some good loads either 556/233 and 300 blackout that would work great but is still lethal while having less penetration and no worries of that bullet going through your neighbors house. There is also some good videos from Iraqveteran888 on 300 blackout tests for hd.
I like #4 buckshot for a shotgun. Hornady critical defense for my 9mm. Black Hills 223 55 grain pointed soft tips, which work great on coyotes, I don't get pass through but they destroy all the lung tissue and fragment, which no doubt can kill a man, especially with a head shot in a hostage situation and if it's just a robbery or home invasion, well there are 30 rounds to eliminate the threat.
Don't get me wrong, I love shotguns and they offer a lot for hd, but it's pretty hard to beat an AR-15 with the right loads. Plus there are a lot of budget AR's out there that start at $450 or so and that's not far from having a decent shotgun.
Amen
Todd K hell yeah brother agree 100 percent with everything you said.
Todd K I was wondering about using #4 buck for hd, thanks for the info.👊
From my limited experience, I remember one thing that scared me the most...missing. my backdrop was a house that had kids. I wasn't inside my house. Whether it be a slug or #4 buck, or even .223, if you are unlucky enough to hit the window of a house because you missed, it's not going to matter. Dry wall is such a small factor to base choices around. Overpenetration through a barrier is more of an issue when you miss. I'm not downplaying what you said, but my highest priority is to get to where I don't miss. It may not be possible to get to where you are guaranteed a 100% hit rate, but I think that is what to strive for. Ammo choices can make a difference, but that depends on what the barrier is, and we unfortunately don't get to pick the back drop. An example of different barriers acting differently- go shoot a 4×4 with a defensive type of slug (like pdx1) then shoot it with a .223 round. The 223 will fly right through without a problem and still have plenty of energy. A pdx1 slug will barely make it through the 4×4...and yeah, I've tested it multiple times. Then you move to multiple layers of sheetrock and the story changes.
My point is, worrying about which will overpenetrate worse is something that is so dependant on the situation and what the backdrop is that it's not something to waste time worrying about. Training, shooting under stress, pushing yourself beyond your abilities are the things that will help you to not have to worry as much about what will happen if you do miss.
josh benware
Not in disagreement brother. We all want to make our shots count, and it's nice to hear from others who actually know what their back drop is, but misses can happen and the less collateral damage, the better. We also don't want want our shot or bullet to go through the bad guy and keep going with massive amounts of energy.
You make some good points, I appreciate your input, helps us all and makes for a civilized conversation.
I was wondering if you can make a vid of how shotguns effect different body armor, keep up the awesome work guys!!
Almost missed the 2nd shot and totally missed the 3rd shot at 5 yards
Yep whatta dumbass
I would love a video about foot radios and headsets, and how to weave antaina extension threw a plate carrier
I would like to see you guys do a demo using various shotshells on wood doors, sheetrock, vehicles and any other materials you think it may apply in real world situations.
Adding it to the video idea list
I used shotguns to shoot up cars, washers, dryers, microwaves, refrigerators, exterior and interior doors ( both hollow and solid), and even a couple riding mowers. Needless to say, birdshot was fun only because it was cheap. When the targets needed to be destroyed, slugs, 00buck, #4 buck, magnum BB shot waterfowl loads tore the crap out of everything! Slugs and buck worked the best, especially on solid doors and the vehicles, but it didn't matter on hollow or even cheap exterior doors, and appliances, cheap birdshot did it's fair share of damage! However all the loads were fired from an 870 with a full length vent ribbed barrel with a full choke. Some real nasty rounds are the 3 1/2" 00 loads, 18 pellets a shot and anything up close and personal is gonna have a real bad day.
I just purchased a Mossberg 590 for my new home defense Weapon . Now it's training time...Go Navy !!!!!!
You're gonna have to train extra hard with that Mossy, 870 is the way to go.
Great video guys. Keep me coming.
Thanks for warning me i was thinking of using blanks instead of paintball guns
This was unintentionally funny as hell thanks man 👍
Nice review. Thanks!
Thank you for this video I've been arguing with my brother over shooting thru walls this was 100% accurate.. he has several ar.s different cal. He says is great I firmly believe in the shotgun time tested and true.
My house helped me choose ammo.
Very old double brick with 10”-11” thick walls and since I live in it alone.....
Hornady 00B @ 1600 fps. !!!
If I could have found #1 buck at that velocity......🤔
Good stuff. Thanks
3 inch turkey shot pretty powerful stuff
Check out Federal tactical reduced recoil 8 pellet 00 Buck with flite control. Very tight patterns and eliminates the issue with the 9 pellet flier.
Thank you boys! ❤️🇺🇸
Great video! I would like to see one like this on rifle ammunition for the AR platform.
I’ll add it to the video Idea list
Tactical Rifleman
I second that! lol
Will make for an awesome video!
I dont think ive ever seen anyone cycle a pump action that fast. Take out the racking sound and close your eyes, id have thought it was semi auto. Keep doing what youre doing homie cause you're damn good at it lol
Paul Harrel has entered the chat
It’s really not hard lol. Semi’s really aren’t that much faster than pumps, I just got my pump about a month ago and I can shoot it just as fast if not barely faster. Now shooting it accurately at that speed comes with practice. With a semi you can only shoot it so fast and actually be on target.
Thanks for the advice
Great video!!
Good video thank you
Urban carry is sh!t!
I have to get some of those tactical pants, I love the pattern, I'll have to incorporate your stance when starting deeply into my ol lady's eyes.
Those shades in overcast lighting, a must have.
Wait I was so mesmerized by your stance I missed you testing the ammo.
Incendiary is my current home defense 😭
I like the way that first breeching round slapped that plate. That's a very nasty round.
Can you do a video of 9mm sub guns vs 5.56 sub guns for home defense? I’d be interested to see what your take on a short barreled 5.56 is considering it was made for longer barrels
We are going to cover this in a future video. Thanks for watching, TR
5.56 is superior in stopping power hands down even with a short barrel, but the concussion, flash and extreme noise it will produce inside the confines of a home will be the biggest deciding factor versus a 9mm carbine.
They always give the advice when it comes to shotguns what if your loved one gets taken hostage. But What about when you are not even home and it is just them in the home by your lonesome for a week or two while you are away. Do they know how to used said shotgun effectively?
Good video thx!
A shotgun is my go to for home defense. NY makes it pretty hard to use a AR15 for anything besides target shooting. Can't use it in its designed form.
870 20ga youth model, tube loaded with #3 buck rounds, left one round low, saddle loaded with slugs and birdshot. Everyone in the house can wield it safely and effectively, and with the red dot on top it can send a slug in a dinner plate at 50 yards consistently. Hate on the 20ga all you want, but it is the ultimate all-purpose short-to-medium range weapon.
I use my 12ga for trap shooting; but the 20ga is the defense gun.
Terminator shell is the best of all worlds for home defence. It's a slug, and a hollow point with a little shot sprinkled on top.
Indianahillclimber
Haha, way too many cheesy Arnold quotes come to mind...
I still prefer using Flecheete rounds for unexpected “visitor” scenarios....very lethal and able to penetrate level 3a vest
Ahhhhhh, you speak my language. A good load of flachetts take the flexibility of a shotgun to a completely different level, they just need good balance and someone who knows how to load them.
Ever tried the bolo slugs?
Sweet CRF hoodie!!
Winchester pdx1 defender rounds are my fave. 1 ounce slug behind 3 copper plated pellets. Nasty load for a bad guy to experience
That's my favorite. Best of both worlds. It's just so expensive.
Given current situation, would be nice to get a 2020 update
I’ll add to the video idea list
You forgot dragon's breath rounds
*Burns down house*
@@worlore1651 lmao for reals 😂😂
I uh, I don't think DB is a good home defense option lmao.
@@MoviesFreeGalore just a joke
I use 00buck in my shotgun, but do not use it for home defense, AR all the way!!
joseph73
I agree. I'd use a shotgun if need be, however I will use #4 3" magnum shells. However I too prefer my AR using Black Hills 55 grain pointed soft tips. Those rounds will fragment quickly and from what I saw it did to coyotes 150-200 yards away, it leaves a heck of a wound channel. Same with some of those Hornady polymer tipped rounds, they all work real nice!
Todd K What is your opinion on using 55 grain hollow points?
@2be Blunt glad to see someone with grey matter between their ears.
I use a 20 gauge youth rem pump with #3 buck. 18 pellets. Beats any ar15 by 17 projectiles each pull of the trigger. 20 gauge recoil is minimal.
But then you have less accountability for where your projectiles go and you might hit a non combatant
Those follow up videos better be soon lads, I hate teasers!!!!!
I love you videos bro
Oh snap! Another Navy Seal!
Slug is best. Furthest most accurate. And it allows you to take the fight to them. If they are shooting at you from outside the house. You know if a guy is in or at a car as back up for the thief.
There are different types of chokes. A full choke will keep the pellets closer together, whereas as skeet choke will spread the pellets uniformly. There are many different types of chokes to meet the need of the target. A number 6 shot will definitely kill within 25 yards, as will buckshot, sabot, and flechettes, It is a matter of over-penetration vs knockdown, You have to be careful not to injure or kill the innocent ones behind the sheetrock or a neighbor through a window.
Agree 100%
@@TacticalRifleman I certainly appreciate your service to our Great Nation and our values! I also appreciate your videos. The average self-defense shot is about 7 yards, especially in a home. Hell, the plastic wad is usually found embedded in the intruder. Please keep up the good work on educating the public!
No 4 buck, 34 pellet Federal. I like how Winchester No 1 buck 16 pellet patterns.Either one.
They have buckshot and slugs in the video game DayZ, I wish they would add Birdshot, after learning about it here.
I may want to see him shoot our 1 oz 12 gauge back-spin ball rounds on this range.
We actually was not intending to have these rounds to be made available inside the US....
Send them and we'll shoot them.
@@TacticalRifleman We think about it..... We can not afford to see these rounds end up in the wrong hands, namely the FBI.......
@@TacticalRifleman hey,in a realistic situation could a shotgun go through medium armour like strong fiber and rubber, mez thinks that because theres so many pellets hitting the armour at one that it wouldn't disrupt it evenly and would be able to penetrate the armour with ease
This channel is great and that rig looks like it’s seen some shit
Is he talking about home defense in the US or Afghanistan?
Yep
Best round I think is a 3in turkey nitro round really tight group but very powerful.
If they have your loved one hostage, you're probably going to give them whatever it is that they want, not start shooting.
Speak for yourself
Agreed!
Good info 👍 where can we go on here to request ideas for future videos???
Right here, as we actually read the comments. Or, you can e-mail us at tacticalrifleman1@gmail.com
Tactical Rifleman I think you guys should definitely show some ops with all the gear you would carry on a real mission. you have a big enough kill house so lots of videos could be made I would definitely recommend a drone👍
I got one of then VR80's so no racking sound just high speed blasting haha
I will take the dragon breath round.
Brenneke Slugs .. the gold standard ...solid core ...well established ...I agree can’t see using buckshot due to liability in certain situations
Anthony Luisi
You should really do some research on that! A solid core slug is going to have way more penetration than any buckshot. Solid lead slugs are a better alternative if one desires a solid projectile in a shotgun. You should check out some videos from Paul Harrell, he keeps it very real, best tests on YT and he shows different calibers and different loads from a shotgun. It's worth a look.
Todd K, I agree with you .. The point I’m trying to make us do I really want to use buckshot where an errant pellet Because of lead deformation Peels off and has unintended consequences by hitting somebody who should not have been shot such as the example given in the video where an errant pellet it’s a hostage and any example your wife for example I would rather use a Brenneke slug ...I certainly am not going to be shooting through a wall if I don’t know what or who is behind it that’s the point I’m trying to make remember no your back stop and what’s behind it
Todd maybe my terminology was misconstrued ... solid core = solid lead as you say .. that’s what I mean👏👏👏
Anthony Luisi
lol, gotcha! It's understandable!
Todd K thank you sir 👏👌👍
Very informative thanks
Glad it was helpful!
I wanna get a shotgun for home defense and I’ve seen a lot of birdshot vs slugs and I think I want slugs.
So for home defense would you use 4 bore or just stick with basic gauges???
I would've liked to see a lot of testing and comparisons with them all
Shotguns are basically buffed muskets
I have a spas 12 and it’s awesome
anyone who's entered your home unwillingly...wtf r u doing man
Why do all Seals have the same facial hair setup? :P
I think it’s a law or something
Standard issue
Government issue Tac Beard.
Only men left in the world are in the Seals. In America at least.
I don’t really understand the breeching rounds. Does the box say breeching ammo? Also can you use a slug or buck/bird shot to breech? Or are you expecting bb’s coming back to the face?
Arvit Kopliku yeah they say breaching shot shells it contains a 1/2 ounce polymer projectile that travels at 1680 fps there designed to take Locke’s off doors
Leather Face that is very good to know. Thank you.
PLEASE Karl, what does the audio at the beginning of each video say? It's been bugging me for ages.
Ch-Ch hellooo... that was funny! 💥💥💥🔫
Random question, but is being able to shoot ambidextrous actually useful? Or is it just a useless skill to learn?
Looking for anyone and everyone’s opinion
But what if I use a bullet (certain caliber) instead of shotgun shell?
man I just wanna which brands to use and what grade. Should I use slug or buckshot with more pellets or go from 00 to 000? The only one with 000 is federal atm. I wanna which else has 000 buckshot.
I use 12 gauge 3" rifled slugs
Nick your Old Lady in the earlobe and you are never going to hear the end of it!!! PRICELESS!!! LMAO, BB
Thanks for watching, TR
@@TacticalRifleman Thanks for making it, BB
would a short 12" barrel 12ga shotgun be too wide of a pattern for home defense if the invader was say 25m away? say just breaking thru your fence perimeter wall, could you shoot across the front yard with it or not?
Way too wide... unless you are running slugs
I thought so because I saw s video at 11 yards 10m a 12" barrel makes a 2ft spread pattern. At 22 yards it would be double 4ft diameter which would mean that most of the bullets would miss a target at larger than 15 yards I think.
just took some of that Remington 9 pellet 00 buck out two days ago and had two rounds that wouldn't go off. Reloaded and tried them again and still no boom. That could have cost me my life. Anyone else having issues with Remington 00?
A.W. W.
I haven't. However I don't use Remington ammo very often. I usually get the Winchester loads or Federal loads. Never had a misfire or a dud in either of those two.
Did you check the primers to make sure they weren't light primer strikes? I had a shotgun that did that before due to the hammer spring was weak and there are some inconsistencies in shotgun primers where some may need to be hit a little harder to go off.
Todd K yea I looked at them. Looked deep enough for an ignition. Also brand new never before fire 590. Was kinda surprised honestly.
A.W. W.
Sounds like faulty primers. I'd look into Winchester or federal loads. See how those work and pattern in your gun.
Shit pops off I'm grabbing my Ruger. Sure love my shotgun tho.funnest to shoot by far
Has anyone ever tested the effect of inserting a tungsten carbide tig welding tip into the head of a 12 gauge slug? I heard it would help the slug penetrate body armor.
While tig welding electrodes are hard, they are almost pure tungsten, not tungsten carbide.
Probably worth testing regardless.
Is rock salt still used and effective as a less lethal alternative? Many of us have all heard and lived the rumor of the farmer protecting his fruit trees (or daughter) with a shotgun full of rock salt.
I like half bird shot and half rock salt
