  • Opened in 1970 the Genesee Valley Center Mall in Flint, Michigan was built by the Hudson Company which was famous for its Hudson's Department Stores. Of course Hudson's would become one of the original anchors along with Sears in addition to 50 smaller shops within the malls. Over the years the mall slowly expanded adding a second story food court along with two more anchor stores JC Penney and Montgomery Ward. Today the mall sits about halfway abandoned with only JC Penney and Macy's remaining as anchor stores, a completely dead food court and empty storefronts scattered throughout.

Decided to give this mall video some music with a sort of mysterious feel due to the “UFO” lights 🛸 when you first walk in. The escalator ride up to the food court is almost like being abducted 👽

I always try to find elevator like
Music that fits the feel of the mall. This mall has strange UFO lights on entry so went with a somewhat bizarre jazz mall music theme.

This use to be an amazing mall..I was just there tonight after being away for a few years and it just broke my heart to see this place pretty much abandoned 😥

Worked security here right out of high school in 2005.
95% of the retail space was filled, including the anchor stores, Sears, Macy's, JC Penney, and Mervin's.
It was relatively safe, but there was a reason why Flint Twp Police Department had a substation there.
And this appears to have been filmed early morning before all the stores opened or at the end of the night when stores were closing.

Hey! I am a filmmaker from the Lapeer County area and wanted to reach out to you regarding your footage of Flint. I am working on a detective webseries that takes place in and around Flint starting next year and I was wondering if you wouldn’t mind if your video was used in different episodes in snippets? I’ll credit you at the end of each video as a thank you if you’re cool with me using it.

What day of the week and time of evening was this filmed? I know many stores are vacant but it also looks like some just close earlier than others? Also, are there still stores open in the outdoor corridor? Thanks for the video update.

Man, i go to this mall all the time. There's still a thriving auntie anne's there, so it's the furthest thing from dead.

The stores are fine but the actual mall is bad. The food court might as well be shut down since it’s abandoned besides one place, and the bathrooms are always disgusting, looks like they’ve just given up on cleaning the actual mall

I always think of Dawn of the Dead when I see the insides of these closed malls, very ominous feeling.

The best thing about here used to be as soon as I would get up the escalator, there would always be a guy from hibachi handing out a sample of chicken. Lol. Weird to see a mall I used to go to on here 😳. Every time I drive by, it looks sadder and sadder.

There is a lot more life in this mall then this video makes it appear. It needs to be filmed later in the day, not 2 minutes after they open the doors for the morning. Late afternoon/early evening/weekends are totally different.

The Midwest is filled with all kinds of these malls. I film them because they won’t be around much longer. Thanks for viewing

  • @charlestonpinballarcade

The elevator structure looks like a burned out watch tower from a Walking Dead episode.
