Hello Sir, My cleaning rod was removed when California militia blocked the rod channel with their bayonet lug. They did this to 386 of these guns ! So there must be 386 of these rods out there in the world somewhere ? Good luck to you as well,................Doc
Amazing video! the best source of info I have seen on the three models of Hotchkiss plus patent data! I just unearthed a civilian 1883 model sporting rifle that I will be consulting the Cody museum over to see If I can get the records. It is in need of restoration but this has been a big help! Thanks.

As usual another great video showing all the interesting features of these classic old guns . Watching you shoot is almost as good as doing it myself and best of all I don't have to clean them . I've bought a lot of old guns just so I could experience firing them . In my early years of collecting I loved Winchesters . Living in Canada they were not as common as in the US , but for some strange reason I found quite a few model 1876's , however I never found any Hotchkiss's . Thanks for finding them for me and showing me how they work .

Man, I love how the 1883 looks. I think having the old rotary switch like on the 1879 to simplify training a bit would have been ideal if it were adopted in bigger numbers for groups like the national guard or state militias
Hi Vincent, The 1883 does look great and very well made also. If Winchester could have scrapped the magazine cutoff, it would have been simple to operate. Regards....Doc
Hi Doc that 1883 looks like it brand new. And the speed that they chamber a round is amazing. But you do realize there are quieter ways to make kindling. Excellent video!!

Thanks Doc for another very informative & entertaining video. That flat nose bullet you were shooting appears similar to a Lyman mold one that I use periodically that weighs in at approx: 420 grains. Thanks again Doc! BTW, Congrats on knocking down that elusive 7-10 split. 👍🏻

Your 420 Lyman is the big brother, my bullet being a 293 grain ( Lyman 457191 ) 20:1 alloy SPG lube. You must be knocking over large heavy silhouettes ! ? ! ...Regards...Doc
Very nice rifles! I just won an 1879 pattern rifle at auction, and I'm trying to get my head wrapped around the dial. So 12 o'clock is safe and 6 o'clock is the magazine cutoff. Are the 3 o'clock and 9 o'clock positions both for firing with the magazine engaged?

Something about the bolts remind me of a Mosin-Nagant Rifle. I am always surprised how long it took for governments to use detachable magazines. And to get away from tubular magazines in the Buttstock and under the barrel.
Hi Robert, Yes it does look like a M-N bolt. The Remington-Lee with its detachable box mag. was in trials with the the Hotchkiss, and the trapdoors, but the U.S. kept their trapdoors.

Another very interesting set. A question about you 45-70 loadings if you don't mind? I've currently a Mirikou Winchester Hi-Wall which is a bit of an old shoulder tenderizer even with trapdoor load spec rounds. When I tried BP loads of 55-60ish grs., recoil was much more tolerable. Cavalry loads (50 gr. 400 g.cast) are usable but after 20-25 shots, "Uncle Arthur" starts to work me. I couldn't help notice, your moderate recoil loads. Could you share what they are? Are you using 35-40 grs. and a case filler such a Dacron or grits/Cream of Wheat etc? BTW, do you paper patch your bullets? Thought I saw some white collars on your loads. Looking create some plinker, accurate, fun loads not bear stoppers. Thanks in advance, enjoy your vids very much.

Hi Mitch, Lefties Unite ! I would say it is more natural to shoot most bolt guns as a right handed person, but for slower deliberate shooting it makes little difference.......Doc
