    There's a fantastic documentary about Kansas, "Miracles Out Of Nowhere." In it, they tell about the early history of this band, and they tell of how this song came about. As they were getting ready to head to the recording studio, packing up their gear, Kerry Livegren came back that morning, saying that "last night I came up with a new song." He spent the day showing the other band members how to play it, and that was "Carry On Wayward Son." It just came to him out of nowhere, and it was Kansas' first really big hit. Kerry is a musical genius, though he's no longer a part of the band. Kansas is currently on 50th anniverary tour with the only 2 original band members, Phil Earhart (drums) and Richard Williams (the guitarist with the eye patch.) Unfortunately, original violinist Robbie Steinhardt died just last year, though he hadn't been a part of the band for some time. Kansas played at my high school when I was in middle school, and it was an amazing concert. I saw them play later, as an opening act for Queen, and then as the headliner, several times.

  • @stevegirard-voiceaudiopodcasts

    Yep... Kansas has been one of the best prog rock bands in the world since the early 1970's. These guys are all in their 60's at the time of this concert. Each player is brilliant. You should try to find some of the footage from Kansas' "Two for the Show" live concert back around 1980, I think. They were so good live that it brought tears to my eyes. One of the 5 best live bands I've ever seen (3 times).

    • @mhlevy
      @mhlevy Před rokem

      Not only is "Dust in the Wind" their biggest hit, it came out of a finger-picking exercise that Kerry Livgren was doing, and when his wife heard it, she told him that they needed to record it. No bass or drums, just Kerry and Richard on guitars, Robbie on Violin and vocals by Steve Walsh. To this day, it's Kansas' most recognizable song, from what I feel is their best album, "Point of Know Return."

    Kansas was a "Prog Rock" band. The 70's was the decade for what was known as progressive or "prog" rock. Prog rock was characterized by change ups in rhythms/tempo and melody lines instead of the typical one steady beat / melody the whole song. Other top prog rock bands were Moody Blues, Emerson Lake & Palmer, Pink Floyd, and Yes. A great example of what I would call Prog rock on steroids is Roundabout by Yes. The musicianship in this is stellar!

    Sadly, you can’t unhear this version because it was better in a video when they were much younger and had the original violin player and co-vocalist (Robbie Stien/Stienhart??) big giant guy with big bushy red semi-Afro. Brian May of Queen referred to them as "poly-phonic" and Queen loved them. They went to see Kansas when Kansas was in London touring. There are backstage pix out there somewhere. The verse with it's acoustic guitar arpeggios is very much rooted in folk music, the roots of country music (along with rhythm and blues, the roots both rock and hip hop both). I think what people often find appealing about country music is often the elements that come from folk and the blues. The time changes and melding of such different sections reflects what a big influence progressive rock was in the late seventies.

    Have you ever seen/heard Edgar and Johnny Winter Tobacco Road live version, legally blind brothers from Texas couldn't play sports, so they learned music.... Thank God they did!
    I guarantee you a whole new musical experience, in my 66 years I've heard a lot of people sing, but nothing like his instrument, but then again he doesn't just "sing" the song, he "sang" the song

      Just to fill in if anyone doesn't already know, they were full albinos, and had practically no pigmentation in their eyes. So the retinas had no protection from bright light roasting them and eyesight became gradually more impaired. In later life, Johnny had to be led onto the stage. So their world became more and more the world of sound.

Saw them again in the 80's in Rockford, Ill. at the Metro Centerthink they opened for the Doobie Bros. anyway another great show!!

    And they're getting up there in age in this video. You can see the lead singer Steve Walsh struggling to keep it together which he did a good job of (he's 58 in this video). But if you really want to hear something, watch the live videos from when he was 30 years old. Getting old sucks.

    They got a little self indulgent at the end there... lol... I saw them in the 80s at a Day on the Green in Oakland CA..... I think... This is music from my teen years. I like how you listen through and don't interupt every 20 seconds. Good job young lady! Thanks for keeping my gen alive. Keep in mind that these guys are in their 70s/80s... Rock on!

    If you notice this songs has 3 hooks in it ,most songs have 1 maybe 2, this song was made from the gutair player finger exercises he did at home,his wife herd him and said that's catchy and made it on the album, at that time they still had no top 10 hits this song put them on the map and yes came from Kansas

    I think you should react to Kansas’ song The Pinnacle. It was voted Kansas fans’ favorite song by the band. There’s a live video version from Don Kirshner’s Rock Concert available, I believe. Incidentally, their hardcore fans, of which I am one, are known as “Wheatheads”. In Wheat We Stand! Great video!! Feel better. 🤘🏼
