  • No doubt that having a Kubota tractor and backhoe made this job MUCH easier, but this could be done with a shovel, a wheelbarrow, some garden hose and a couple of willing people. This is not something you see every day, so I thought you might like to see it actually happen. Heinz and I have already transplanted two barrel cactus larger than this one, and several smaller ones, so we have it down to a pretty smooth science! One thing to keep in mind is that you should take note of your work space, especially when you pull the cactus upright. The reason being is that when you pull a cactus up, they tend to roll and be a little hard to handle as they are quite heavy. You want to make sure that you have a safe place to escape the cactus if it falls toward you. You do not want to be in the position of falling in to another cactus while trying to transplant another one. It is painful.....I should know!

Heinz definitely knows his way around a backhoe! That was interesting. Thanks Bart

Yes, the dirt seems to be a mix of caliche, sand and some soil. What ever it is, it seems to work well for what grows here! Yes, plenty of sunshine Michael, we would be happy to share it with you! Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment!!!

Thanks for watching and the comment Cat Bird! Yes, the cactus are beautiful to me, both in the way they look and their ability to survive in the extremely harsh desert conditions. Glad you liked the video Cat Bird!!!

Bart, I watch and do not comment.
    I know you understand me.
I enjoy your presence, progress in construction works and your voice from all your videos.
I would like to know English, but unfortunately.
Now I also get the sun's warmth from Green Valley.
We have 8 ° C in Pine Forest and only 2 ° C at night.
I always am, even though I do not write. Stay healthy, brother. 🍃🍂🍃Mirka

I do understand Mirka, and I thank you for watching and the comments you do leave. I wish I knew Polish, but that is not likely to happen in this lifetime. You can always come to my channel when it gets too cold in Warmia!!! ;-)

I was taught to never water cactus after transplanting as the roots needed time to callus so it wouldn't rot. Has this cactus done well for you since?

I was taught to "water in" a newly planted or transplanted cactus to stimulate the roots. But after that, do not water so the roots will go deep and find their own water. Thanks for watching and your information. This cactus has really done well where we planted it. I would much rather try transplanting a cactus than just letting it die!
