  • Along the path from design to manufacture, a lot of information gets passed from computer to computer and machine to machine. Figuring out how a product’s design and manufacturing information can be authored, exchanged and processed without errors is critical. NIST is playing a key role in this “digitization” of manufacturing with its Digital Thread for Smart Manufacturing project, which would help businesses of all sizes make the most of the revolution.

2:10 That's interesting. Greg's surname "Sondag" is extremely similar to the Swedish word "Söndag", meaning Sunday. I wonder if his ancestors originally came from Sweden.

Would digital thread benefit the hobbyist/maker prosumer desktop: 3D printers, laser cutters, 3D scanners, homebrew CNC, etc? Would be nice if something that was 3D printed would fit perfectly with another piece that was laser cut both from the same file.

+SoCalFreelance Hi, digital thread would be helpful if you were using machines that ran on different types of software or if you were looking to have your design mass produced by a manufacturer. You can learn more about the project and its applications on our website: www.nist.gov/el/msid/syseng/dtsm.cfm.
