Can technology save you from a shark attack?
www.bbc.com/future/story/20180...
“Over 18 days, Huveneers - who heads the Southern Shark Ecology Group at Adelaide’s Flinders University - tested a series of commercially available shark deterrent devices to determine their effectiveness in repelling the ocean’s most feared predator. Over many long days at sea, his team observed sharks from its boat and with cameras below the waves."
Why Are We Afraid of Sharks? There's a Scientific Explanation.
news.nationalgeographic.com/2...
"You're more likely to be crushed to death under a falling vending machine in your office, or a cow that collapses on you in a field than you are to die in the jaws of a shark. But fears don't necessarily match facts, and the fear of being attacked by a shark is more about our emotional response than the reality."
20 Things You Didn't Know About... Animal Senses
discovermagazine.com/2014/may/...
“Snakes’ tongues do more than taste: They help track prey. Their forked tongues pick up scent molecules that the animal transfers, via specialized ducts in the mouth, to the Jacobson’s organ, which can detect where the scent’s source is located.”

Act crazy. The shark will swim away thinking you're on seaweed.
They Actually bite humans cause they mistake us for seals or whatever, so don't squirm
and dont make seal sounds
And don't play dead like an opossum, sharks love opossums.
Beesh And don’t let the joke go over your head..... oh wait
Or a trump supporter
My first shark encounter was with a 9 foot long great hammerhead when I was free diving in the keys few years back in murky ass water after a tropical storm...it was the scariest but coolest encounter I’ve ever experienced the shark was so chill but I was freaking out 😅
There's only one way to escape from a great white shark. Swim faster than your friend.
You will never swim faster than a great white shark.
My brother dives with sharks. He says to avoid an attack, don't get too friendly with them. You can't let sharks mistake you for a good chum.
yeah just avoid the shark friendzone and you are fine
Can't tell if actual advice, or joke about chum being used as shark bait. 🤔

Why not both?

True you have to act tough instead of soft
Must be quite the loser to obsess over the most philistine validation
*lmao just draw a circle around yourself* 😂😂😂
And for the love of God don't play a claranet
*y'all are forgetting to also be wearing your anti-sea rhinoceros undergarments*
THAT'S AN OVAL. IT HAD TO BE A CIRCLEEE!
Your screwed tho if a sea bear comes around
"There's so much we don't know about sharks." I know that they can bite you and make you bleed very profusely. That is shark 101.
I find not going in the sea to be a pretty effective way of avoiding sharks
I'd love to but I'm deeply terrified of sharks so I'm trying to learn what to do in that situation so I don't freak out and have a panic attack
Surely an *underwater version of a cattle prodder* should give the best results in deterring sharks.
So awesome. This is what Shark Week should be about. Pure education. Not sensationalizing attacks, but teaches us. I'm all for it. (also. I know it's not shark week. just making a point).
0:15 F@$% me! 😂 That's exactly how I'd react soon as I realized there was a shark nearby
Evariste Galois
I wouldn't even be afraid because of all the documentaries I watched but I wouldn't risk it so yeah I'd do the same 😂
anywho lion Kopa
Thats what they all say before they end up pissing their pants
Yeah, it's all fun and games swimming around with that cute little Mako until Deep Blue shows up.
Loved the shark footage! Especially at 2:15 onward - some of the best breach attack scenes!
Batman's Shark Repellent
Someone had to do it
Too bad Ben Affleck doesn't have it.
Holy sardine!
Electronic interference with their electrical sensing system. But that 40% hit rate is still not low enough.
That is 40 on bait. I would hope it is less on a human
Yeah exactly, that's 40%, down from 94%.. whereas a human is likely starting at under 1% or something. Having less than half the likelihood to be bitten than before is great.
There's been stories about users of shark shield that are very positive.
@@Herr2Cents Yeah, "stories" are nice. As another guy posted on here, he would HOPE that the 40% strike rate (with the electronic interference) on bait was LESS on humans. Hope ain't gonna save you if you're in the water with a 40% strike-rate product, and you end up in that lower 40%.
@WWZenaDo : they didn't explain the significance well enough: that an attack on humans is much less than the 94% on bait, so that small percent would be cut by even more with this repeller.
3:41 So it's the equivalent of trying to eat a chicken wing that's screaming at the top of its lungs
Bill how tf does this not have more likes
Thanks for the interesting video, seeker! I look forward to seeing how much more you guys will learn during the swim across the pacific.
idgaf
Shark shield is the real deal and has been around for some time. I wouldn't be doing this without one.
Don't swim in the ocean and you won't get attacked by a shark. It's super simple stuff
perfectdiversion some sharks are found in freshwater too 😆
You ever heard of sharknado?
just wear a shark costume that might fool them, not during mating season though
A shark costume LolxDdddd
If that's science then I don't believe you. Maga
Make friends with an Orca
Sharks aren't bad creatures its just they have a hard time telling the difference between fish and humans. And some sharks quickly realize their mistake and leave the human alone a scar or a lost limb. Other sharks if their really hungry they just eat.
they dont even find us tasty.. also they dont give af that we are humans.. so this whole "good" and "bad" thing doesnt apply
Starts with "Sharks aren't bad" and end with "if They are hungry, they just eat"
Sharks don't give a shit about you. If it thinks you are something it might like to eat, it will take a bite to see. People are good or bad, sharks are simply an apex predator.
there's at least one of these comments in every shark video.
Vlnxd Roa rumor has they can't reach you for a bite in dry land
We had a juvee female mako tagged off the coast here in VB, VA. She's tracked on Ocean, and has made an amazing journey to Nova Scotia and then then down into the Gulf of Mexico... unbelievable!
amazing... what a killer machine!!! Note sure if I would like to meet that thing while diving... :) Those sharks (even great white) at Hawaii seems to look less active than at Australia...
I've swam with sharks a few times. They are beautiful. My profile pic is a whaleshark, they are harmless.
Whale sharks are awesome!
I wonder what would happen if I tried to rub a whale shark
What do you call a solitary shark?... A loan shark!
@4:00 "The proportionate bait being taken by the shark was reduced down to 40%".
Great, so my torso and head will be left intact with this device. lol.
I was always told to punch the gills or the eyes. Also, I've heard that chemical repellants are pretty effective. Also, I saw a documentary where they said if you can somehow flip them on their backs, it temporarily immobilizes them.
They're among the tried-and-tested methods which have proven to be effective..
And how in God's name will i flip a fucking Shark 😂😂😂!!??!!!???
cool, but how often is a shark interested in taking a bite out of you, is going to approach you head on.
Great whites in particular through 500 million years of evolution and natural instincts can blind side seals which are far more attuned to their surrounding in the water than we are.
Don't ignorantly test a shark's nature in it's domain thinking you can just punch it.
@@basilfoh6295I think he's never seen a shark fly 10 feet out of the water and landing on whatever he feels like hahah
@@xXxBurnerable LOL
Does it also work if the shark charges at you from deep below with a high speed? Like the way they hunt seals?
Interesting question
I believe so. Watch 3:19. Looks like to me that the shark comes from below field was activated and it bailed.
That's what I was thinking too
So my buddy lives in a v sharky area of South Africa, he has the zebra stripe pattern on his surf board... he told me how he was saw a shark coming straight up at him and pulling away last moment.
@@jksinorbit I’m very curious how patterns, lights, and colors play a role in attracting and deterring sharks! Why is most scuba gear black do you know?
I remember chatting to a friend about shark deterents, how I read books about devices that keep the sharks away.
His response was to say, that's all well and good but has the shark read the same book as you.
What is the best weapon when confronted
This is amazing 😎✌
Why are all of the suggested videos on this kids videos? How to pull out your tooth? Alexa picks slime ingredients? WTF? I'm a grown ass man.....
Exactly
Yeah me too . weird
Mine too. Wtf
looks like somebody missed his nappy time. Have a juicebox and go play. If you're good youtube will recommend some cartoons.
When I was in Hawaii 13 years ago, I met a buisness man who had purchased the rights for a water-proof watch that repelled sharks. It did so by releasing a very faint electro shock. It didnt effect other wildlife but when a shark swam nearby it would jolt like the first shark did in this video when reacting to the device.
It doesnt hurt the shark but more like startles them and blinds their electro-magnetic sense.
Mitchell Krever I definitely need that
@S J. the product Noshark
Was his name Tony Stark?
LMFAOOO Dr. Charlie is actualy Ryan Renalds look a like... get ready for the mint commercial
Ben: When I saw it for the first time I freaked out a little bit.
If I were him: When I saw it for the first time, I was scared to death and I realised I just shat myself ...
Incredible, thank you
40% is not "detered", it's basically 50/50. If i told you that the roof i made you will leak 40% of the time - you'd ask for your money back. I'd argue that getting wet is a lot less serious than getting eaten by the shark.
Thank you
Seeker honestly is the best CZcams channel in science
agreed.
Better than Sci Show? Better than Asap SCIENCE? Better than Veritasium, Kurzgesagt, Minute Physics, and The Royal Institution???
Go on and tell me this is better than DNews! I dare you! I just dare you!
Wrong. No actual data is shown. Only provide narratives. Go check out tons of other ones. My favorite is smartereveryday
Swim across the Pacific? Sharks are a sight, yes, but did he come across any plastic?
More than we can imagine.
Oh boy, glad you asked! The Swim crew has encountered approximately 4.6 pieces of microplastic per minute and almost 20 pieces of larger debris per hour they're on watch. Stay tuned for more!
@Mass Debater You must think they have all the time in the world to collect plastic ontop of collecting data, protecting the diver, checking yhe weather etc. Where would they store the trash? Theyd have no room within a few days.
@Mass Debater They are documenting it, thats where he statistics 'we're enclunter 20 pieces of large debris and hour' came from. And the purpose of the journey across the Atlantic is to raise awareness and gather more data on the Ocean; so theyre already doing so.
@Mass Debater You've got serious issues. Dont ask questions if you dont like or want the answer. Secondly I'm actually a male. Third, no one cares about you or your wife so carry you annedotes elsewhere you bigoted ass. What type of idiot ask researchers to fix the garbage problem when the actual research trip is working towards that. You say I cant proccess information but you asked the dumbest thing ever. Let me guess, your American right? To me it seems like someone got upset they asked a stupid question so they decided to make it personal. Finally, you should divorce your wife if thats how you feel, an unhappy marriage is good for no one bro; dont snap and hurt your women one day because she points out your illeterate.
Forget that 'Sharknado' taught me everything I needed to know about sharks...lol
The best type of shark deterrent isn’t electromagnetic deterrent it’s a chainsaw
There is nothing more scarier then a 24 foot great white shark chasing you in the middle of the ocean
They don’t get that big. Based on calculations (liver size needed for buoyancy) maximum they can get is 23 feet. The largest we know of so far is 20 feet
How far is he on the swimming I haven’t kept track
The conclusion was: Use electro pads on your surf board and/or a wet suit with camouflage markings. Personally I'll be sticking to the Hotel Pool.
Da da da daaa “Chomp”
_Yes, comrade? Tesla suit ready, electrician in the field!_
Sharks are so beautiful.
Well, WA better get on with that device then. The shark dilemma around here is crazy. 😁
Stay safe out there guys!
*Fish are friends not food*
Why not both
@Otagema if they're the bad kind, aka illegal fisherman & poachers, then they're food.. On the other hand, if they're researchers or of similar professions, they're friends..
Finding Nemo reference
Fish are yummy
Humans are food not friends
Just tell him no, it has no consent to eat you out anymore
That shark shield may be better, until the battery runs out
What's the background music track?
He smiled when he said 40%, I'm looking for more like -40%.
i came here because of the title, wanting to learn what to do if i am attacked by a great white. I am dissapointed.
That looked more like a Mako than a GW to me!!!
A honest question no sarcasm or fooling around I know that smaller sharks even hammerhead & tigers in warm water will move off if you come at them head on with something to poke them (wouldn't make a habit of it) would a adult great white do the same & has anybody tried it like your friend there?
"We don't know anything about sharks or their behavior really, we don't even know what they eat." Sure, so let's go swim with them..
How did he not shat his pants once he found out there was a shark nearby?
Sharks are a force-a-nature
Astute comment
I saw documentary where they used dead shark juices in a container and release them when the Sharks came around and they went away but it had to be that particular type of shark
dude, this is cool
Simple. **snap**
What about sound deterrents??
3:06 attempted to L O O R E the sharks xD
I saw a documentary about the use of juice extracted from rotting shark tissue. The scent caused to vacate the area.
really amazing
Fascinating
0:54 the left screen is for vertical orientation videos from cell phones. Don't show wide screen on it.
.... Most proven way to avoid great white shark attacks... Hunt them into extinction lmao
Ryan Reynolds and Scott Adkins married and give birth to professor in this video.
A better wau to not avoid a shark in the ocean is to invite it to your birthday party
Amzing just amazing creatures
I love sharks so much
Go out there and pet him
You go in the water. Shark's in the water. Farewell and adieu to you, fair Spanish ladies.
People are dumb about sharks. Go to the Caribbean and swim with some bull sharks and reef sharks. You'll meet dive masters who drive with them every day and have never witnessed a single bite on a human.
Everytime it shows him actually in the water with a shark, it is a Mako, and they are not very dangerous to humans. Great Whites, Bull Sharks, Hammer Head and White Tip sharks are the ones to be concerned about.
32 million surfers. How many attacks on surfers? Not body boarders or swimmers but surfers...
Was that Ben Gardner's boat?
What if its doing a breach attack from the bottom eh lets see ur sheild stop a 30 mile prh attack
Until these deterrants work 100% of the time, they don't work.
Scariest and worst scenario of all would be in open water stranded treding water
“Sharks don’t eat people” watch at 4:40 the clip of that Great White and tell me you’d take that chance.
You didn’t think about sharks before you decided to swim across the entire ocean??!?
You will never beat their survival instincts, like humans
Far out. Did you see the state of that white's dorsal fin starting at 2:51 ish?
Wrap your self in tin foil..lol
Aha, I want to see/know about this topic but at the same time I want go to take a shower as well 😅😊
Graphene is the answer for a start on shark deterrent . It conducts electricity best and is harder than diamonds . It's going to change the world someday .
except for the surfer in australia who was wearing a shark shield who got bit in half by a great white.
Loool sharks look kinda funny
i was swimming deep down in the ocean i found a shark behind me
Tell the shark you don't care if you're on probation.
I think that's the most interesting man in the world.
How about making a small device to fit on a surfboard...
The shark in the clip with the swimmer is not a Great White, it's a Mako. Close, but no cigar.
Great at first then seems like a commercial :)
The real question is would this still work if I'm on the rag?🤔
Good question, uh, Sebastian... 🤔
So the F-C-C won't let me be or let me be me so let me see
I don't think so. There have been cases in Florida were mailed Alpha Dolphins attacked women and ironically all the women wear on their monthly cycle.
No it will not. The only way to protect you when on the rag is to buy much tighter pants and try not to be such a filthy animal bleeding all the time.
Identify as a megalodon.
scott adkins now a shark expert
Wasnt there a product just like this years ago that made the same claims, and a California surfer got attacked while using it?
Sharks are older then the evolution of trees. So tragic to see such a successful species be endangered by humans
To all the funny folks around here: Are you 12?
Sharks leave once you soil yourself.
