To address the orca in the room as well as few other things which have popped up in the comments ...
Yes, Great Whites certainly share the spot as apex predators with a bunch of animals, like other sharks, Sperm Whales, Orcas and other toothed whales. This, however, doesn’t mean that they aren’t apex predators. There have of course be instances where Orcas have killed Great Whites - which obviously isn’t a problem for them given their size and that they hunt in large groups - but they are usually not a typical prey item for them.
I originally had acknowledged orcas in the script but including "together with orca" or something like that every time I talk about sharks as apex predators just sounded dull.
One interesting thing about this, which I wanted to include but then had to cut out because of time restraints (I didn’t want to go another month without uploading), is that Great Whites are actually very afraid of orcas - which would've I think fit great in the narrative that sharks aren’t mindless killing machines. Great Whites have been observed to quickly leave an area when Orcas show up and they usually don’t return for up to year.
So Orca fans cut me some slack - this video was about sharks - I will make a video for you too in the future.
Another albeit less controversial point was the one about the bite force. This is based on an article of the BBC (the fifth one in the description). In that article you can read - which most people commented - that the saltwater crocodile is the current record holder for the strongest measured bite force on the planet. However, computer models based on the jaw structure and muscles suggest that Great Whites probably have an even stronger bite although nobody has measured that yet in the wild. That’s why I said “possibly the strongest bite force”.

a few things that would have been nice but first let me say you are making insanely good vids and i think the vid its allready good enough to be on one the best vids i saw about sharks.with that out of the way let´s start 1. sharks can turn the teeth (can´t find it rn would need to look if you want the source) 2. may add ahuman as conperison to the senses 3. include the fact that there are sharks "shows" where tourists let locals attract sharks with blood and fishes (may be a reason for attacks and also be a good thing to point out to not support that or just with caution) 4. add a calorie comparison by the seal exsample at lastly the biggest thing bullshark and great whites got nealry the same bite marks (complettly not sure where i got that from but i will find it if you need it) lorenzinian ampoules

Peter Benchley, the man behind the novel "Jaws", which the movie was beased upon, felt very badly about this and was a very dedicated shark conservationist up until his death in 2006.
@ most people involved felt bad about it.
Their intention never was to demonize sharks, but to make an intense movie, which it was at the time.
Sadly, it ended up to be some kind of confirmation for killing sharks, that didn't do anything.
And hands down, even when a shark kills a human, it's never an act of hatred or anything. They don't know such concepts, they just want to eat.

There are a LOT of venomous snails which are easy to step on. Search for cone snails. These things be scary yo.

They're like toothy submarines with the personality of a cat.
Maybe in a couple more million years they will have evolved even further, and their pectoral fins might have turned into little T-rex arms. That way when humans enter their territory, they will no longer be bitten, but instead get molested by an inquisitive white shark. Much better!

I don't really blame the companies, they want to make money, we're the ones who consume it. Now a day it's all about the sensationalism and the drama, and we consume it like a castaway finding fresh water. Hence the over saturation with "reality" shows.

Couldn’t be more wrong a pack of orcas have been documented killing great whites. Also when a pack of orcas move into an area shark sightings massively drop off. There can be two outcomes that caused this, they where eaten or the sharks relocated to ensure not having to compete for prey and to also become prey

Be it an orca or a great white, neither of the two would be a pleasant experience, however, orcas don't need a strong biteforce, their ability to hunt strategically is more than enough.
Great whites on the other hand, similar to crocodiles, are ambush predators, they need a high biteforce in order to kill their prey, as they aren't exactly good at hunting something over distance
It has always bugged me when some people try to justify their action of killing sharks with this claim: “We’re trying to keep our oceans safe.” Uh, excuse me? Sharks were swimming in those oceans long before we humans started to take the plunge. In short, that excuse doesn’t work anymore. The oceans belong to the sharks, not us.
Eh, no. Doesn't mean we should kill sharks, but the oceans don't belong to anyone, and humans using shark repellent or putting barriers around our swimming spots is perfectly normal. "Don't swim if you don't want to be bitten by a shark" is neither realistic nor helpful.

BigMikeMcBastard I think it’s fair to say that the ocean belongs to the organisms that actually live in it, though the concept of ownership is irrelevant to most marine animals. But seriously organisms like sharks have been around for literally 425+ million years, they’ve lived in the oceans since before even the existence of amphibians, reptiles and mammals.

if you want to help sharks and other sea life commercial fishing is the biggest problem they don't just catch cod and tuna in their nets they catch sharks dolphins and turtles and they often die when they bring the nets up kinda like the scene in Nemo, they often use illegal nets as well and use people from poorer countries to work on their slave ships promising money but hold them hostage and they often never see their families again its horrible. I stopped eating and buying fish because I cannot put my money towards horrible people destroying the ecosystem because money drives them of course
I don’t. Sharks will still kill you. They don’t not intentionally kill humans out of the goodness of their heart, they do it because they don’t want to take a risk on a new food. They do not care for you or your well-being. They will have no qualms with permanently injuring or killing you. I’m not saying we should exterminate them, but keep in mind that these creatures have no compassion. No love for you, other sharks, or anybody else.

@@stanstanstan2597 People hang around sharks more commonly than you think, surfers off the coast of California meet sharks all the time, the surfers just don't notice. There are youtube channels out there that show how sharks could be as close as 6m away from surfers and they don't notice.

I'm a little bit biased because I did a degree in marine biology and worked in marine wildlife conservation for several years, but it makes me so happy to see people like you make videos to inform others about the wildlife that so badly needs our protection, particularly when it's so well made!

Oceanic white tips are considered a very dangerous speices.
There are really only two sharks to actually be afraid of: The overly aggressive bull shark, and the only shark known to also be aggressive as well as doing it for actual predation: The Oceanic Whitetip, which has been attributed to deaths of many shipwrecked survivors.
Great Whites tend to bite first as a test bite, and that bite rarely uses teeth, it's mostly figuring out if something is edible. Tugging back will cause them to go into instinct mode, and bite down properly. This is where most severed limbs come from.
Been watching a lot of these vids recently, given that great Whites are intelligent, I think it's fair to say they have their own personalities too, and whilst most don't attack humans, there are some who will give a test bite, and some who are, well dicks. Some sharks that are extremely territorial and will viciously attack swimmers, and others that are so hungry, they will attack to consume as has been shown in some individual cases.
I'm absolutely loving the quality of your videos! The production value and depth of information are truly on point! I'm sure we'll see 1M subs before too long (though I can hardly understand why you aren't there already). Thank you for all your wonderful work! :)
I'd just like to say thank you for consistently uploading well-researched, excellently illustrated videos that are informative, clear and interesting to myself and my children aged 7, 13, 18. This video in particular resonates as I live in Australia - Great Whites are such an important part of our ecosystem and it's essential they and other shark species are protected.

So i always hear "you are more likely to get struck by lightning than be bit by a shark" but how do the ratios compare between lightning strikes to population vs shark bites to people who have been in the ocean? Like obviously shark attacks are rare, but most people in the world never even been near the ocean
Have you ever heard of beaches? Those are filled with people.
Truth, I think some of these videos, are not showing real numbers and ratios. And possibly making people a lot less aware of sharks and taking them for granted the numbers would never be even you can’t come up with a real ratio when one group is not participating in the other event on a regular basis

1) a dozen of them attacking in rotation will kill anything, and they're faster, smarter, and have greater endurance than any shark, and they work in simultaneous 3d coordinated pack/flanking tactics with sonar
2) you don't have to kill the biggest ones -- you can wipe out the small ones and the big ones disappear automatically after a while
3) if you bite off the fins, the teeth don't matter, and if you bite out the gills, the whole fish is done, and...
4) if you don't believe us, look at what we still do to great whites anywhere, any time we like. Chomp and roll, baby; chomp and roll.
If you don't believe them, take it up with them. They seem pretty sure of themselves. The great whites also seem convinced enough that a whole population of them will flee an area if the orcas start in on them. There's even video and tag-tracking records of it happening.
I'm not saying they are telling the truth. I'm just saying they could do it, and that's how they remember it. Maybe they got the story second-hand. Still, to this day, great whites survive by staying out of Orca's way.

With their huge, dense, complex, brains and oral folklore culture, maybe we can look forward to the day when some AI supercomputer can learn to talk/sing with the whales, and they tell us the tall tales of their histories in the seas.
Human culture -- even the oldest shamanic threads --- only goes back 70,000 years, and we have almost nothing left from before 12,000 years ago, just a few shadows and scribbles, handprints on a wall, unexplained pictograms of totem creatures.
Most of even our first advanced coastal culture is now under 30 meters of seawater, its evidence wearing away with the tides or forever buried in silt.
Imagine, then, the grand living literature of a continuous whale culture passed down in song for 10 million years with all the nuances and varieties that allows... that's a library I would love to wander through, if only I can comprehend its meanings :)

after watching the movie crawl im never going anywhere near them. Because those were alligators imagine salt water crocodiles hell no fuck that.

Fresh water crocodiles on the other hand are so docile when unprovoked that’s it is entirely possible to swim with them, as long as you do not disturb them they do not care

I think the reason most people demonize sharks more than any other predator is because we as human beings associate sharp triangular shapes with danger as well as sharks having a pretty intimidating appearance when compared to most fish in the sea.
