IgoByaGo Wow, that's both sad and awesome at the same time. Sad because you lost your classic Sega Genesis and games but awesome because the CDX goes for quite a bit nowadays and it also enables you to play Sega CD games along with music audio CD's and Sega Genesis cartridges like Mark said in this video.
If you own a model 2 Genesis, go for the individual CD attachment. Much more affordable. However, if you own the Model 1 Genesis, I would recommend going for the CDX, as the Model 1 CD attachments are much more expensive. Although you can get the model 2 CD to work, just takes a lot more parts.
I have come from the future to tell you that Sega has released 2 Sega genesis mini consoles! while they're not called nemesis, they're still awesome!!!
I had no idea that this console existed! When I was growing up, I was more familiar with the model 1 and model 2 Sega Genesis consoles. I'm missing out on a lot of good stuff here! And I'm not the only one.
+Dustin Nunn It originally was the prototype for the Sega Giga Drive/Sega Mars that SEGA of Japan had developed in 1991. They send it to SOA in Early 1993 with instructions to "design a stand alone prototype with System 32 Arcade chips for release in 1994". Fearing a retail flop and afraid of losing Genesis US marketshare, SOA instead designed an upgrade for Genesis called "Genesis 32" in the form of a Cartridge based attachment. Called "32X".
Fun fact: This video came out on my birthday, exactly one year after I got a CDX as a birthday gift. I almost shat myself back when this video hit, but didn't want to make a mess at the Intergalactic Space Arcade.
Why was the CDX so awesome back in its day? For taking your console to a friend's house without needing a backpack full of adapters, a power strip, and what not. I never did like the Sega CD that much, but always loved the design of the CDX.
So my wife and I were watching this review, and she just wanted me to tell you that your voice is quite epic and you should have a radio show because it would be amazing.
Probably the coolest combo console I've ever come across was a JVC X'EYE I found at a yard sale for ten bucks. Research tells me this was the American version of the Wondermega, and I absolutely ADORED it. The unit was tough as nails, and even though I bought it used I never once had an issue with it playing ANYTHING. The only problem I had was a lack of a six-button controller, but that was hardly an issue for the games I had on the thing (Mad Dog McCree a complicated game is not.) Anyone think Mark will ever get a hold of one of these? They seem to be pretty expensive.
I had one of those back in 1998. My best memories was bringing it everyday back in early High School days, listen to CDs and everyone asking me 'what the hell is that?' Thrown it away a long time ago, but still have the Ecco the Dolphin/Sega Classics games that came with the console as good luck charms.
Lol the 90's was also the best time to be a gamer. Yes there were some garbage consoles that didn't last long. But it was fun to see so many companies and consoles on the Market. I think Segas brain trust was trying to hard to see into the future with many of their console failures instead of focusing on what was in front of them. Often times when you see people trying to predict the future they have outlandish ideas...Like look at one French picture from I believe the late 1800's trying to predict the year 2000. It had flying fire fighters & stuff. You want to be innovative but not outrages.
Not only is the cdx smaller & compact but it also saves you alot of wallet power and adaptors and space, am astonished how sega was able to shrink down their technology down into 1:6 the size of a genesis & mega cd combined, this is mind blowing considering it dates back from the mid-90's.
I used to have a Sega CDX. Wish now I still had it. I had the games that made it worth having like Lunar The Silver Star and Eternal Blue, Dark Wizard, Shining Force CD,and Sonic CD.
if you are fortunate enough to own on of these they are well worth holding onto what he didnt mention in the review is that the cdx is also compatible with the power base converter with the need to modify it like on the genesis model 2
This is pretty much the only Sega console that I ever wanted in the 90's. Aside from the Master System when KB was selling them for $20. I should have cleaned them out and saved them to sell on Ebay.
Who had ever tout that condencing technology was already advanced enough in 1995 to shrink both a sega CD and sega genesis not only into a single unit but even make it smaller then the sega genesis 2 as well, this is just mind blowing.

It does NOT use the model 2 power supply. Use that and kill the CD drive motor! The model 2 power supply does not have enough amperage. Many have killed the unit using one.
Save the money and get a bunch of consoles, choose multiple: - All the Ataris - NES - SNES - N64 - Master System - Genesis w/ 32x and CD - CDX - Saturn - Gamecube - Dreamcast - Vectrex (a bit overpriced, but you may have the money left to buy another console) The possibilities are endless!
Castlemaster712 Yes, but if he has to choose between the current gen and old gen, I assume he's not from that era, and has no current generation console, and his PC is not powerful enough. I like old games, but lets get real, modern games are so much better (not all of them, of course). Old systems are fairly cheap, but games for them are fairly expensive, a lot of good titles are considered to be collectible items and can easily cost you as much as the new game, or more. Imagine paying 60 bucks to play a Berzerk or something. Old gen shouldn't be a compromise, most games didn't age all that well. For someone from the current generation, old gen should be a compliment to the modern systems.
funky3ddy Old games and new games are almost the same price, or even cheaper for example: I bought Mario 64 at around $30 A new game for a new gen console, like Wind Waker HD costs around $85
I got this on clearance when all the wacky new Genesis add-ons/variations were being abandoned by Sega around the time of the Saturn release. I loved it... for the short time it lasted. It failed within a year or two after I bought it.
Lol well atleast you got to enjoy it. We bought a Sega CD from KB toys in like 95 on clearance in Virginia when visiting Grandparents & when we got back to Ohio and try to play it never worked. Opened it up & everything was taped together lol
I wanted a cdx but I managed to find the jvc x'eye during my search for it and ended up buying that instead. It isnt as compact but it is an all in one unit like the cdx is.
I'd like to get one of these at some point. I never had a Sega CD. I want to play Snatcher on it as well as Sonic CD and a couple of others. I do have a Genesis (with a working 32X, by the way) but never had a Sega CD. This is definitely the model I'd want.
Minor gripe but no talk about it's portability? From looking at it it seems to be usable as a walkman and possibly a battery powered sega but no real coverage of those aspects.
I used to have one. You can't use it as a battery-powered console but it could be used as a CD walkman (albeit a very large and heavy one). If you skip to 1:09 you can see the battery cover at the back of the unit. I can't remember if it took 2 or 3 AAs. Whatever it was, you wouldn't get much more than an hour of them.
it will play a music cd on two AA batteries but no games at all,it needs the wall adapter to play any games on it. I still have my CDX and today the units are rather scarce.
while truxton is indeed a great game my favorite vertical shoot em up of all time is the Raiden series (both the arcade and psx versions are godly) with D-Force (dimension force) as a close second on the snes and Aero Fighters in third. as for horizontal right off the bat it would be Phalanx for snes, then the r-type series then super nova (or Darius force, i think it was sorta stupid to rename it like that). i almost forgot and i guess you can consider this a shoot em up but i fucking love super buster bros. i still have the cartridge in my collection.
Small correction - you mention that the CDX uses the Model 2 power supply - while it will work in the short term, that power supply is not correct and the unit that ships with the CDX is more powerful. A number of people using Model 2 power supplies have eventually had problems with their CDX's. I'd recommend getting a supply equal to the rating of the OEM power supply. I know, for example, that the JVC X'Eye supply is correct for the CDX as well.
This does look like a great console. From what I recall though, everyone knew about the Saturn coming out, and wasn't gonna fork over the cash for all of these versions of Genesis. We waited on the Saturn, but looking back, I'd rather have this instead. Then move on to the mighty Dreamcast!
+ClutchKman Saturn was over a year away in America. CDX's public reception was positive back at Winter CES 1994, it just got overshadowed by the disaster called "32X".
I want one of these Julie Ford because I've never had a Sega CD and seems to be a cool design. They are expensive though... And one of the comments here said he didn't review Truxton yet? He sure did back a few year ago! I want to get a copy of Truxton myself. Why isn't this on Virtual Console or available for download anywhere other than to play on an emulator?
I don’t think I’ve ever seen this available at any store. It should’ve come out instead of the Sega 32X. It looks like an early Sony DiscMan and is very versatile. The Sega CD has so many cheesy FMV based games it’s ridiculous.
Someone broke into our house and stole our Genesis with all of the games. When insurance settled with us, we got a CDX and it was awesome.
Yeah, until my sister gave it away to her friend. She also put chocolate cake in my cartridge port on my N64 and disc drive on my first Dreamcast.
IgoByaGo
Seriously? Dang, she sounds mean.... Unless she didn't mean to, I guess.
No she meant to do it.
IgoByaGo
Oh, dang... Did she realize what she did? She ruined one of the best game consoles of all times.
The CDX-What the Sega CD should have been.
+Josh B Actually what the 32X should have been.
I could have been now since retro games are sold again now.. but they ain't making the retro sega cd..

You should have mentioned that the CDX has quicker load times, and it only uses one power adapter (two if you use the 32x)
I have a Sega CDX and I highly recommend it. I got a great deal on mine years ago for $5. In my opinion this is the best Sega console to date.
losbanosmonkey And on ebay people putting 180$ minimum.
+Dad1972hthorn THIS was supposed to be what 32X was.
The 32X makes it look like a toilet...
Rightfully so
The Jaguar with the CD add-on resembles a toilet more.
yeah, i hate 32x. sega mega cd is better
Now all we need is AVGN to shit in it.
+விஷ்ணு கார்த்திக் Already done x)

Sega should do another console called the Nemesis and just return to being awesome.
Agree that
I want this Nemesis to play all genesis, sega cd, 32X, sega saturn and dreamcast games. Worthy of the Nemesis name.
at USD400 too??? hahahahahahahaaa
I have come from the future to tell you that Sega has released 2 Sega genesis mini consoles! while they're not called nemesis, they're still awesome!!!

Love these hardware reviews with some games mixed in. Thanks for another great review, Mark!
I feel like I might have one of those in my parent's garage, I'll need to go there once in awhile.
So my wife and I were watching this review, and she just wanted me to tell you that your voice is quite epic and you should have a radio show because it would be amazing.

Gabriel Guevremont should have kept it there $$$ now
My favorite version of the Genesis, sleek, compact and has the capabilities of both the Genesis and the Sega CD in only 1/3 the size.
Even in 2017, when you see silpheed on a screen from a different angle, it looks as amazing as any game released this year.
I miss my CDX so much. I never should have sold it.
Trust me. Mark is no douchebag. He just rules. Watch a few reviews and you will be hooked for life.
I'm Glad I Still Have One There Insanely Expensive Now Good Lord 😳.
Bless you for mentioning Dark Wizard, one of my all time favorite games, which was leaps and bounds ahead of its time.
So, Silpheed, Truxton, and Shadow Squadron on a system with a smaller footprint than a Genesis MK1? Nice!

Great review. Never knew about this console and it has that compact look as well.

It is a sharp looking machine. Only 1 plug needed!
Man, would I LOVE to get a Sega CDX! The problem is that they cost several hundred dollars on Ebay. And I doubt they're cheaper anywhere else.
That technology has NEC written all over it. It looks just like the CD drive for the TurboGrafx 16 CD rom.
I have one and yes, I have used the 32X with it. Mine looks a look better. I guess because one owner. It is a very nice unit.

Is it really that bad that I can't decide between owning a Sega CDX or owning a PS4?
If you really have to choose between these two, go for a PS4.
when in doubt, just buy a vectrex.

- All the Ataris
- NES
- SNES
- N64

You can also use it as a portable cd player.
The SEGA CDX is great!
I regret that i sold my Multimega back then... :(
Did you know that the Genesis CDX/Multi-Mega was later repackaged as the Linguaphone Education Gear?
The JVC X'Eye is similar but a higher place in rarity.

Always a good exit. Great reviews. Thanks guys
YOU CAN'T LIVE WITHOUT IT.
I gotta get one now. Ill get a cdx then the 32x. Genesis is a great system.
I had no idea that you can use the 32x on it. on the 32x box it says not compatible. you learn something everyday
This would be quite a beauty if it also played 32X and 32X CD games.
Is it compatible with the Power Base Converter? If so it might be the most useful albeit expensive Genesis model out there.

Nice review Mark! But can you please review your awesome CRT tv? I'd Like to know about it! :D
