  • On this edition of The Uncommon Valley, we take a closer look at the all in one console that attempted to bring more people into the house that Sonic The Hedgehog built with the Sega Genesis and the Sega CD: The Genesis CDX. It is among one of the hardest to find console variants that never sold well in stores, and is one of the rarest Sega consoles of all time.
Around the 90's, Nintendo was working on CD-based add-on for the current console, the Super Nintendo Entertainment System. While initially partnering with Sony, they later tried it out with Philips. Even after both deals went south for Nintendo, Sega decided to try out the same kind of peripheral for their own system, the Sega Genesis (also known as the Sega Mega Drive). The first few years of the Sega CD seemed hopeful, with games that featured famous film actors and full-motion video. Initially, some people saw it as an evolution for video games, due to the games' advanced graphics and high production values. It wasn't long after the Sega CD was released, however, that people started realizing how unnecessary the add-on really was. Because the device was so unusual, it was hard to develop more "natural" video games, which is resulted in a slew of games known as "interactive movies." I know that this is an exact copy and paste from the Angry Video Game Nerd's description over view, but putting it here because of CZcams.

When I was a kid, I wanted the Sega CD X. That price tag, however was ridiculous. Even back then, and I never ended up getting one. As an adult with a huge income, I still can’t bring myself to buy it because it feels like a waste of money at this point.

Kind of wish companies like Analogue would make a CDX like console to use disk and cartridges into one unit. They've done it already for Turbo Grafix/PC Engine, so why not other systems?

I actually have 2 cdx's but I currently have my model 1 Genesis, model 2 cd unit combo hooked to my crt tv. Biggest reason being is the cdx audio chip is the same one used in the model 2 Genesis and that being said the first run model 1's like the one I use has the best sound.

Sega shouldve released the SegaCD addon at 49.99 and take a loss on it, but move entirely over to SegaCD software. Of course they could still release Genesis carts, but they shouldve focused mostly on SegaCD.

The should have made a CDi system, that played VideoCDs, and had a car adapter.

I was an SMS enthusiast who was stunned--then absolutely elated that SEGA had announced the powerful Genesis, a slightly downsized System 16 arcade board.
The Sega CD failed because SoJ brought very few games in that made good use of their powerful 68000 processors and even more powerful ASIC for arcade scaling, rotation, warping, and 3D graphics. SoA failed to advertise their best games: Sonic CD, Snatcher, Battlecorp, Final Fight, Shining Force CD, Soul Star, Batman Returns, Keio Flying Squadron, NHL 94, and the Lunar Series.
Some of the best games of the 1990s were on the criminally underused Sega CD, yet most potential buyers thought it only capable of janky ports and s****y FMV games that were hard to watch even when put up against VHS.

The big thing was it offered marginal improvement. If they had a CDi/Video CD, a car adapter, and a redesigned game gear tuner that allowed the Game Gear to be a controller and a receiver, then it would of had a possible place. The 32x caused more confussion than anything, and the Saturn was more complicated than necessary.

@MaxAbramson3 one big problem would be a lack of save, maybe if it had a microcassette recorder/player? Yeah it doesn't seem like it was used as a regular storage device.
