Another tip, if you are using AI files that aren't working, make sure the "continuously rasterize” button is turned on. It's the little star icon on the layer!

It could be tricky when pre composing, try selecting option for leave attributes when precomposing

have done this step by step and i cannot get it to work. When i take 'Echo' to '50' it doesn't show a block of colour (red in your instance) any idea why it's not doing this? Thanks. My type is travelling right to left, not up and down, does this affect it?
The direction should be an issue, as long as you have the keyframes created and there's a movement it should work fine.
What about other echo settings?

Yeah, you've gotta pre compose the png and then apply echo effect, I can't remember the exact order but it's complicated
