I think it's pretty unanimous. People expected Black magic. Like true Black magic. Like imagine if the film was about a league of Black witches and wizards, some diving into stuff like voodoo while others fall into more mainstream magic. I'm ticked off that it was all about race, a low key rom com. Just make it a rom com, like it's not uncommon to see two different races fall in love.

It's a completely idiotic comparison, Hitch is the protagonist of the movie and the point about the character is that he's obsessively career-driven despite working as a glorified matchmaker, which is then confronted by the narrative when he gets a love interest, it's supposed to be ironic, Kevin James' character is a comedic sidekick, nothing in that movie is about black people serving whites, Hitch is a professional providing a service and the story is about how he is so confounded by love when love is supposed to be his business, race is irrelevant unless you're actively looking for things to complain.

What I dislike isn't the idea that magic black people are out of all things using their magic to help white people feel comfortable and safe. What I dislike is that the MC is only willing to change the order because he fell in love. I would have very much been in the premise if there was a rebel faction within the group, or even the MC starts rebelling, because it's like you're focusing on helping white people, what about helping black people? Where are these guys ensuring that poor black people at least get the bare minimum of a fair shake to get out of poverty? Where are these guys ensuring that when white people with guns try to kidnap a black person to harm or kill, and prevent that from happening? That's where I wanted this movie to go.

The problem isn't calling attention to the "Magical Negro" trope, it's to imply Black people have to constantly walk on eggshells around White people, ("the most dangerous animal in the world"), in order to avoid their wrath. We all know its the exact opposite. First off, look at the minefield of politically correct speech codes, trigger warnings and safe spaces on college campuses. Look at the cities that burned down over George Floyd where has no one has even heard of Thomas Kelly, Joseph Hutcheson, Daniel Shaver, or Tony Timpa.

I want to see more great movies made by a black director with a black cast that doesn't need to be a story about race, usually very one note movies that we have seen a million times by now. I think creed is a good example, pursuit of happyness was good in this regard to my memory. Spiderverse is definitely a hallmark in this. Davine joy randolph in the holdovers is a good example of a character that wasn't defined by her race, but still a standout in the movie.

Well, in the trailer, the main character questions whether he should put his own desires aside just for the sake of making white people happy, and I can see why a romantic subplot would be the first thing one thinks of when addressing this kind of dilemma, so the romantic subplot seems a bit more justified than most. I'm willing to see the movie through in hopes that it's not just another romantic subplot.

I think it upsets white people because they know if a script contained the line 'black people are the most dangerous animals in the world', it would never be approved and the writer would likely be canceled in a second. Actually, it is worse, I don't think any writer today would dare to use that line in any work independent of context, not to mention the word 'negro'. The prevailing hypocrisy is hard to swallow sometimes, it is why the thing with those university presidents is getting so much traction. I am curious to watch this though, but I think it will end with something lame, like a white man that is the one really in control of the Society.

Go look at the "death wish" series. The animal accusation need not be verbal. It is inferred in how black people are treated.
A recent example that illustrates the point is the Hazelwood highschool fight.
The white "aggressor" attacked a black teenager whose self defense made white people so uncomfortable that they upgraded her to an adult for the purpose of being prosecuted.
Even when black people defend themselves against violent white people we are suppose to make them comfortable or be labeled as violent miscreants.
That's why black people, especially black men who work and live around white people have to "act" meek.
Not because we actually are, but because white people are aware of their own ill gotten privilege that has been made possible by exploiting and oppressing black people, and they fear black retribution.

guide or magic McGuffin; the idea that the movie is about keeping white people calm in the presence of black people
And literally have people under the trailer going: "If the races were reversed people would be made" and getting genuinely heated.
I saw people call Disney's Wish, "woke" cause the protagonist is black or the people upset that Miami has a large black/brown population in the new GTA
when GTA San Andres also had a black protagonist or the last GTA as well! Its really embarrassing behavior to see a movie poke fun at the hostilities and be met
with people displaying the exact same behavior; or even WORSE behavior.

The criticism of his casting has less to do with however devoted to the cause he is and is more a critique that it seems fairly evident that he's more palatable to a white audience. His appearance would be generally stigmatized as non threatening.
And in making a movie where a black person is rejecting a system that serves whiteness because he fell in love with a white woman. It's kinda shooting itself in the foot and contradicting it's own message because he stopped serving whiteness to pursue whiteness.

The black history of my family is complete to the last slave Cornewalis Hughes which isn't what a lot of black families can say. My dad taught me that racism is just a club weak people use to beat over your head. He told me it doesn't matter what color you are when you get that power you will absolutely abuse and take advantage of it. Flags don't need to be taken down, statues don't need to be, certain people don't need to watch their words. If you are a government entity and you support tearing down statues and hiding the flags of our past that mark our history you are beyond doomed to repeat it. It's better to leave the scars on the skin so that you know not to open up new ones. However when you hide them, you forget about what caused them in the first place and you make new scars. We used to have this sort of common sense in the black community but that has long since disappeared in the mainstream.

I suspect whoever was in charge of advertising tried to play up the romance to try to make it more palatable to people who don't get the joke. My guess is it uses a very basic plot structure as a medium for broader commentary, like most satire. But this is just a guess. It's very common for trailers to be edited down to just the parts they think will get the most seats.
I do think people are being too hard on this but I agree that I really hope there is more to it than just a rom com.

Overall I agree doing the deep dive into the formulation of this piece and its scriptwriter. This is going to be way more comedic/satirical than I think most are expecting but I wish it really explored that social/fantasy angle.

Yeah I thought this was gonna be a Scary Movie-style parody of Harry Potter type movies, then I watched the trailer and it turns out its gonna be a lot worse. On a side note, in fairness to the movie Hitch, Will Smith's character did get a love interest and he ended up with her in the end, so it at least that movie broke with that aspect of the "magical negro" trope.

The thing about the movie that a lot of people don't understand for the people who hate this movie. It's about the comprises black people make to get white friends and not be bothered. Straightened hair, change there speech, etc... And doing it through the magical nergo troupe. About black people comprising themselves to magically help white people thriving out a movie.

The main character in the movie is bi-racial and the whole plot is that he likes a white girl. How can they be upset? The Magical Negro troupe isn't even properly addressed from the looks of it. I wish this was a movie that made white people uncomfortable like Get Out then it would make sense. The magical negro was like the kid from the new Hunger Games movie. He barely had any lines other than yelling in rage and being extremely strong but he barely served the plot. He didn't save anyone or kill anyone in the games he was just there to show white people that there are "good Black people in the world". IMO

Seasons greeting to all my toastie fam from across the pond in Scotland.
So I live in Glasgow and like all big cities we name our civic and educational buildings after notable/famous people and recently we got a new cool University building named after 'James Smith McClune' and I all always like googling these names to find out about their life etc.
And man this dude had a fascinating life... The first African American to gain a medical degree (was prevented doing so in the states) , first black to be published in a medical journal and first to open a pharmacy. He devoted his life to helping the most vulnerable black people. By all accounts he is a black American hero!

You have to laugh at the hypocrisy of this garbage. A a movie where blacks are racist against whites and complain about racist whites. Not everyone whos is white in america is racist, but this movie might create some new ones😂

Especially because the Magical Negro trope was blatantly created to appease them. The "Magical Negro" is just the "White Savior" with the colors flipped, but somehow they say both are manifestations of White Privilege.

Why did you skip through the beginning of the trailer. Just ignore the literal quote.. "what is the most dangerous animal on the planet, sharks?, Whit people when they feel uncomfortable around black people." LOL now imagine the rolls in reverse
