One Very Confused Rail Crew

  • I will say, this left me confused. From the start, we knew all along what they wanted to do with the gondolas, but it must be a crew that isn't from the area, because they got lost in our little 4-track yard. And they also blew a red signal. I honestly don't know what was going on, but I decided to make a comedy out of it anyways. I hope you enjoy! Also, doesn't that C-40-8 sound AMAZING?????? :)

    Uh, there could be a number of reasons why it was done the way they did. I couldn't hear any dispatcher traffic so I 'm guessing. First move, They may have intended to shove in "headways" and just drop the gons. The dispatcher could have notified the crew that a customer wanted them switched in a different way, or there were cars, or a "cut" that to be built in such a way so the total train would "set off" a certain way. IOW, "dovetailing" them into another cut. "Running" an absolute STOP is not necessarily absolute nor must the train stop short of it IF 1) he is clearing a high switch, 2) dispatcher authorizes it. See, there could be more traffic in the block(s) ahead, and if a switcher always had to stop without contacting dispatch, you could unnecessarily tie up a whole mess of moves and delay (gum up the works) if there weren't ways around a STOP signal. So, its majorly controlled by the dispatcher by radio as opposed to the old train order and timetable system. Under track warrants, it works a bit different and allows the dispatcher some flexibility. So if there is traffic ahead in the next block, but RUNNING, opposing traffic, a switcher can pass a STOP for the purpose of clearing a high switch so long as the track isn't fouled ahead and any train occupying that "Red" block is aware of the move. Of course, if its too close for comfort, then, yes, he would have to stop or clear up south of the switch. Remember: With the info I have, I am guessing so don't bet too critical.

      Same here, when I was yard conductor on an extra switcher when Amtrak was running the freight operations, normally I worked the brakemans job but my conductor never showed up, so they’d move me up half the time without telling me. One such night, was sick and came to work, was raining too, got a newly marked up brakeman who didn’t know the freight yard or industry tracks we spotted, but we were all new once. Then two more folks show up, that need to be yard trained, so I had to balance this crew where I could give them things to do that wouldn’t get us in trouble, but I was pulling my hair out. Final straw was one of the trainees falling asleep on the ground leaning against the switch he was supposed to have lined for us, he awoke in a panic and lined the switch against us, but then was standing in the gauge waving his arms for us to stop. I bailed off and ran ahead and pulled him off as the switcher came to a stop shirt of splitting the switch. This guy had narcolepsy and was a cop, but couldn’t handle working at night and it showed here too. Found out he quit the following day, guess he figured out it wasn’t for him.

    1. Protect the TWO MAN CREW BILL (HR 1748 Safe Freight Act) It’s about public safety and jobs.
    2. Go to SMART-UNION.org/td
    Click on the Red button support two person crews on the right side of division home page.
    2. Enter contact info ( this is needed to direct the email to your member of congress.
    3. Click Send. The pre-drafted my essage will be sent directly to your member of congress.
    4. This effects railroad retirement, retired railroaders, current railroaders there’s even a spot for the general public to make there voice be heard. Please take action there is 175,000 conductors and 59,000 engineers that need this support not to mention public safety at risk.
    5. safety of the crews and the public must come first!
    You have all got this wrong when it come to 2 man crew verses one man
    crew. The airlines have had autopilot for years but still have two and 3 people in the cockpit. If Boeing has taught us anything technology fails. It’s all the workers do is worry about losing jobs. Its common sense thousands of railroad workers will lose their jobs if all the railroads are allowed to go to 1 man crews. That's an issue you need to take up with Politicians ! They claims they are creating jobs then let him do something
    about people keeping the ones they have!
    This is about safety. This is about saving lives. Not just crew lives
    but the American people as well. Don’t forget about the rule-making process that was invoked by then-FRA Administrator Joseph C. Szabo after an unattended 74-car freight train carrying crude oil ran downhill and crashed in the Canadian town of Lac-Mégantic, killing 49 people in 2013 that had just one man on the train!Railroads preach safety every single day.
    Its in their rule books and in their advertising. Its 24 hour a day
    safety...safety....safety. Well let them put their money where their mouths are. Pay for safety. Keep 2 men in the cab.
    Just like GM shutting down 5 plants putting 15,000 people out of work and pay there CEO 22 million. CSX on the other hand lost 41% of the business once Hunter Harrison took over cutting out almost half the work force from 27893 people down to 15,362 people system wide and they paid him 385 million only to pass away 8 months later!
    With everything going automated from self check out lanes does anyone profit except share holders and CEOs!!!!
    The public has no idea what we deal with. Tell your neighbors about how
    many cars we hit and people are killed every year when they are hit by
    trains. Explain to them how the engineer is in the cab calling the dispatcher and getting 911 called. He is taking care of anything that may be wrong with the locomotive. He stays with the train. Tell them how the conductor gets down and rushes to the vehicle to see if he can
    possibly save a life. Maybe a baby is in the car and needs to be helped
    or maybe the parents can be removed and need CPR. Maybe he can comfort
    someone who is dying or in shock or screaming because they are severely
    injured . Tell them about how we hit live stock and large deer. Tell them how people love to put junk on the tracks. Shopping carts, bicycles, steel barrows, wheelchairs and even abandoned cars. Tell them about how many trees we hit a year and do extensive damage to the
    locomotive. The engineer stays with the locomotives and assess the damage and does what is necessary to radio dispatchers for help while
    the conductors gets down and removes debris and check the rest of the
    train for any damage or signs of derailment. Tell them about the
    territory that is in the middle of TIM BUCK TWO! The places where no
    one can get to you fast unless you have a helicopter. How will they go bathroom now without two people to keep the train going down the tracks unless they have to stop not blocking crossings or take lunch. Tell them how radios don't always work in remote locations. Telemetry drops out and communication is lost. How many times does a conductor have to go back
    and trouble shoot another unit after alarms are going off. The engineer
    keeps the train rolling the best he can while the conductor checks the
    computers and checks to see if it is loading. Tell them about the blind
    curves that only one crew member can see around when your approaching
    public crossings or trees that block signals so that only one crew
    member can see them until you get the train right on top of them. Tell
    them about wash outs from floods, and heat warped rail and fog so thick
    you cant see a foot in front of you. SO WHAT IF YOU GOT PTC!! PTC does
    not tell you if a car in stopped on the tracks or a tree is across it
    or a person is walking in the tracks or there is 5 inches of water over
    the rail! Tell them how crew members have been attacked and some have
    even been killed by gang thugs and trespassers. A single man has no
    chance in these situations. It is better to have someone else
    with you to keep watch when working in bad areas and ghetto rail yards.
    The list goes on and on. Tell them how the company took away the right
    of the crew members to take a power nap. One crew member is supposed to
    call stopped every 15 minutes while they are waiting on line of road. As
    long as someone is awake and doing this and paying attention there is no
    reason on god green earth while a tired crew member cant take a 20
    minute power nap. Tell them how crews are run into the ground and some
    are called out every 10 hours around the clock. They work all hours of
    the day and night and most have no weekends off. The company wont even
    let them have a power nap. What is going to happen when there is only 1
    man on the train by himself and he is just plain worn out or is sick and
    afraid to take a day off because of the companies new attendance policy
    which is just absolutely insane. People come to work sick all the time.
    Vomiting, diarrhea, fevers and the flu doesn't stop them because they
    are in fear of losing their jobs. How is a sick man who is all by
    himself going to be able to make a full run safely and without risking
    his life or the publics when he doesn't have his other crew member to
    help keep him alert. The engineer has many roles and duties as well as
    the conductor. There are times when something happens that it is a must
    for an engineer to be on board and ready to take instructions while the
    conductor handles the rest of the responsibilities. There are so many
    things that go into railroading and running trains that the public
    doesn't know a thing about.
    THIS ONE MAN CREW IDEA IS THE MOST UNSAFE AND IRRESPONSIBLE IDEA that
    has ever been brought forward in the history of the railroad industry.
    And for what? To save a dollar. To line someone's pockets. To make
    someone rich. Who care who gets killed. If you think crossings are blocked now imagine if there was only one man and had to wait on someone to cut a crossing!Who care about the destruction
    to family lives. I don't know about you but I sure do and so should every person in America!

    • @boomer8806
      @boomer8806 Před 6 lety +3

      Harrison's "Precision Scheduled Railroading" means a train doesn't sit at a major yard waiting for cars; when it's time to go, it goes. If a car doesn't make it on to its train, it's either added to the next train going to/dropping cars at the same place or it goes out the next day. So the reasoning is, if 1 car shipment is late, all the other shipments in the train aren't late as well. The issue is so much infrastructure and manpower was cut at once, everything's still in an array of chaos.

      All depends on the class of the track, which depends on the geometry of the track. You could have freight doing 100mph if the track conditions/timetable allowed it.

    When CP is assembling oil trains near my house there's times where the crew applies the brakes too early and the crew simply throttles up like crazy to fight the brakes and couple. Great action for GE lovers.

      What do you want them to do? Have a runaway? Look what happened a few years ago, an oil train runaway and caused a huge fire,loss of life and destruction of property and environmental damage. The crew you saw were being cautious for good reason. Otherwise there could of been..it doesn't bear thinking about.

    • @mdr1396
      @mdr1396 Před 6 lety +4

      You're actually supposed to do that. You set the brakes up on your train, but bail them off your engines, that way if you need to stop quickly you just throttle to idle and bam you stop, instead of setting up the air and waiting for the brakes to set which could end up taking so long you blow past whatever you needed to stop for. We generally do that when we need to maintain some speed but also be able to stop quickly if needed, like coming around a curve in a yard or pulling up to say a signal or stopping point.
      What they've beat into us is "use those brake shoes on the cars up, don't worry about them". That also has all the slack stretched out of your train, so when you stop your cars are slamming all over the place.

    • @acelakid94
      @acelakid94 Před 6 lety

      Matthew Robison The MBTA commuter rail trains I used to take in the evenings used to do that. I could feel and hear the train braking, but then hear the locomotive rev like hell and the cars bump back and fourth. It mostly happened when it was dark out and when the platform was next to curved track.
      I guess the engineer can’t see out of the mirror that well at night so they were using the method you described to slow down at just the right time to line up with elevated portion of the platform per the conductors directions.

    • @beeble2003
      @beeble2003 Před rokem

      Nobody makes or buys small locomotives in the US any more. The railroads use older road locomotives for local and switching duties. They use them in pairs because there's only a cab at one end and it's safer and easier to run forwards, with better visibility.

      sparky1024 I doubt it. HH keeps these types of idiots and fires those of us with the BLE-T that actually do our job and do it right. 1 year of conductor work and 4 as an engineer down the crapper. In all honesty, these (most likely UTU) idiots are now in corporate.

      Europa H2O Alien Come to CSX Huntington Division, go to the Russell Yard and see how many individuals there love Mr. Harrison. You're not going to find anyone in a region such as Appalachia who has a positive view of him after laying off over 1/3 of his company's workforce in one region.
      Btw what's your position with CSXT?

    • @blizzardfan777
      @blizzardfan777 Před 6 lety +1

      Europa H2O Alien Also, 5 years at First Union Rail, 1 year at CIT Group Rail Solutions, and 5 years at CSXT, uh, last I checked leads to a certain degree of experience. I worked a route between Russell, KY and Avon, IN, and vice-versa while at CSX. I'm still a dues paying member of the BLE-T Local 4, yet I'm planning on relocating to Local 271. And the last time I played with a toy train was roughly 2 decades ago. I teach the Railroading Merit Badge in the BSA. I've had the chance to be an instructor in the Mountwest Railroad Training Program. I'm one of 3 resident experts on diesel-electric locomotives and how to operate them in the Collis P. Huntington Railroad Historical Society Chapter of the NRHS. Out of all the above, I have yet to hear anyone say that they admire E. Hunter Harrison. If you took offense to me belittling the UTU, well they have yet to be hit as hard as the BLE-T has in terms of layoffs. And finally, I can tell that you clearly have a collegiate education because of your highly intellectual vocabulary in articulating your debate position.
