Here I talk all about 1977’s Gay Bob. I discuss his history, current value, and overall message. #toycollection #vintagetoys #toycollector #doll #dolls #lgbt
The packaging about "coming out of the closet" was so earnest and sweet it made me want to cry. I'd heard of this doll before but i didn't realize how much it's creator genuinely wanted to do good with it and send a postive message about not being afraid to be true to yourself.
@@Thedollswitness fascinating but also oddly powerful. People often seem to forget that rights, inclusivity and kindness aren’t finite. It is not a pie we have to divvy up . We can grant rights, share our spaces and be kind to others without losing anything at all. So its cool to hear about someone embodying those ideals even during a time period when no real anti discrimination laws or wide spread acceptance existed.
...although I 'knew' of Gay Bob...I LIVE for my "Billy" Dolls!! (4:34)...I inherited Billy & Carlos through my (Gay) College Counselor, who passed away, Spring 1998; I bought Tyson (The Black Doll) in 2001, on Christopher St. in NYC ...I NEVER 'played' with them, until One day I designed a 'Beach' motif, and had SO MUCH FUN! (cont.) ...I've done Black / White Party circuit displays, Valentine's displays, St Patty's displays, Superhero displays...tribute to "Gay" eras (Studio 54 70's, Gay P-rn VHS 80's, etc.) ...It's healthy, and it allows OPENLY GAY Men to express who they are, and live vicariously through the Doll's 'universe'....you MUST do One on the "Billy" era (1996-2001), when the "Tyson VS. UPS" controversy happened....
I have the complete Gay Bob set, including his closet and his awesome clothes brochure - I love him! Such a terrific piece of pop culture history and a real icon of the gay rights movement. He shares a shelf with Earring Magic Ken; Billy, Carlos & Tyson; and a Tom of Finland doll (who bears a remarkable resemblance to Kurt Russell). Oh, and of course Sulu (the irrepressible George Takei) Thanks for your tribute to Gay Bob!
He's the coolest! Never heard of him. Never seen one. Thanks ever so much for sharing. Glad he's in your collection. Keep the great videos coming.......
@@Thedollswitness Cool Cool... I had only recently found out about them like a year 1/2 ago. And have only picked up 1 of the 4... Definitely a kooky line with the animal heads and a body mold that looks very "Line Backer-ish"!!! But great fun all the same !!
Have you ever seen Mattel's Big Jim?! I got, what I thought at the time was, a sexy thong black leather romper complete with snaps in the crotch for ease of access and a butterfly zipper, only to take it home and find out it's actually some guy named Big Jim's SCUBA top?!!! Like.........what in gay doll world?! It's one of my favorite fashion pieces I own now. from around 1971? So interesting after I found that. I put it on my extra tall made to move Barbie with the white hair and she looks like a sex icon.
Wow im from the UK and gay ...born in 1970 and have never heard of the gay bob doll ! (OBV prob because it was never marketed in the uk or i just nevr heard of it here!) ..so the 1st anotmicaly correct doll i saw was in the 90s when the Billy doll came out ( dont own one) aimed at the gay market and OBV by then the production of these dolls were better ( not looking like and action man with a dick stuck on) they came in various styles later on BUT originaly were made in latex in 1993 as limited edition as a sort of concept doll.... then later in 1997 they were made from vynil ( thats when they took off!) so you could bend them into diferent poses ( i say poses but thats my polite way of saying any position lol) it would be intersting for you to do a vid on those if you own any!
Thanks for showing Gay Bob! He's neato! I've seen the Billy doll with the huge wanker! I like his boyfriend Carlos with chest hairs! He's really hot! Now, Mr. Witness I was just watching the movie "the Wedding Singer" with Adam Sandler, his swanky friend, who likes the Michael Jackson style, very good looking, reminds me ,a great deal, of you! Though with lighter color hair!!!😉 If you dare check it out, let me know what you think. I think he's a dead ringer!!!

Right? Love him ❤️❤️
Great novelty doll. And thank you for including him in your Doll collection and letting the masses know about him
Thank you! My pleasure ❤️❤️
It would be interesting to learn more about the creator and why he chose to make it, especially given the era in which it was made.
For sure. There aren’t many interviews out there, but it’s all really fascinating. ❤️

Haha thank you! And yup I am👍🏻
@@Thedollswitness You Do You My Dude!!!
Bob looks damn good for 46.💖
You should cover the first ever Lesbian fashion doll as well as well as the drag queen fashion dolls
He should date Earring Magic Ken

Why do you have hold fast tattooed on your hands ? My friend Derek had the same thing I'm from Australia but he worked in circus Oz all over the world
It’s 70s vibes at its finest.
Totally 🔥❤️
I’m shocked he doesn’t have a mustache.
🤗♥️🎄🎈🔥
Is he the same size as a Billy doll?
I think they’re both 13 inches, but Billy obviously a lot bulkier. ❤️
As a heterosexual doll collector I love seeing doll collecting☠ coming out of the closet you got to subscriber🧐
