Pleaseee do the hour-long version of this video with ALL the houses everyone would definitely adore it
I agree! I especially want to see 60s & 70s versions of the dream houses. I thought they actually had the most character
Yes this please!
YES PLEASE
TOTALLY AGREE that or she needs to do a series! I would watch so many of these!!!
I was so sad it jumped 2000s 😭
Barbie architectural historian? Dream-freaking-job!
the job your teachers tell you, doesn't exist yet...RAD.
the candidates for the position were like 3.
💖💖💖
Too cool to see this! Makes my Friday a blast! Fold and fun and I had the Pink House 🌸💕🌸💕🌸💕🌸💕
jajajjJJJ❤
I suddenly understand my interior design aesthetic.
AD is crushing the Barbie content game.
💘💘💘
I had the 70s Barbie Dreamhouse. It looked really beautiful.
It took hours for my mother to build it before Christmas. My sister and I played with it for a few weeks, then lost interest. My cat took possession of the abandoned real estate. He set up house on the ground floor and made it his bedroom. His name was Velvet. The house became Velvet's Dream House.
LMAO!! 😂
🤩 AMAZING
So your mom worked all night to make the cat a house. 😂
@Amber girl Yes! My Grandmother would tell her that she got the cat a live in doll house
Honestly, her name (Velvet) was so apt. The 70s certainly wasn't lacking for velvet!
Barbie promotional material is unbeatable
I completely agree
Barbie has the best promotional material for a movie.
Of course, its the promotion of Capitalism itself! 🥰🤪🥰🤪🥰🤪
Of course, its the promotion of Capitalism itself! 🥰🤪🥰🤪🥰🤪
the marketing team for this movie knows what they are doing! Outstanding marketing campaign. I have never seen a better marketing for a movie.
As a woman in a wheelchair, the elevator really warms my heart more than anyone could realize. My child self would've felt so seen by this! I love that she's talking about it... :)
One of the Barbies in the movie uses a wheelchair! She's in the near-background in a couple scenes!
@Riff Chick I know!!! I’ve immediately spotted her and was so happy. Her pink wheelchair was everything! 🩷✨
Same! When she mentioned that my heart just fluttered!
The 1990 dream house is stunning 😍
it looks very nouveau riche
I have it 2 actually one still in box NRFB
@Mariah Babe😢😢😢
@Mariah BabeI've looked for one everywhere😢😢
I LOVE how Whitney breaks down what style the houses/furniture are and identifies designer pieces. I’ve always admired fashion and architecture students for being able to identify styles and specific designer pieces like that
I would love a longer version of this video that goes through more of the houses.😊
LOOOOOOVING all the Barbie promos!!! She covers every avenue of life 🥰
The 1960s one appeared in "Barbie Life in the Dreamhouse" as a playhouse that Barbie, Ken, Stacie, and Skipper tried to make for Chelsea. The 1990s one is the actual playhouse Chelsea makes for herself.
Kind of makes me hope that the writers of Barbie LITDH were involved in the making of the movie.
this is amazing. please do more with other merch, like the townhomes, kitchens, campers, etc. they were all so well articulated--that's why I loved barbie so much (and still do)!
I need a kitchen evolution 🤩
How do you beome Barbie architectural historian? And why NO ONE told me that I can become that?!
you study to become a historian, do a masters in architectural history and your phd on barbie architectural history. no one told you because you have to invent it yourself
@Cy Cyrillol
Why not become a barbie fashion historian?
My careers advisor at school did NOT tell me about this. I feel hard done by.
@Cy Cyril one could also start by doing a BA in architecture or in art history, then doing the master in Architectural history and so on :)
I grew up with this giant book that had Barbie’s 50 year history. All these homes were in it, so it’s crazy to see them in reall scale and next to a person! Wow, this is doing so much for my inner child 🥹
100 year history? Girl, I'm happy for you but Barbie was literally introduced to the market wayback 1959. Queen Elizabeth II was born in 1926 and when she died she's only 95 or 96. I'm kind of puzzled but ok.
@John Martin Dizonpeople just lie for no reason on the internet. So strange
Barbie hasn’t been around for 100 years, tho.
The 1990’s mansion is incomparable. Simply exquisite and I believe one of the priciest on the market.
90s to mid 00s was barbie at its peak. The detail and quality was top notch then around 2009 the quality dropped so much
It is amazing that the 1962 Dreamhouse seems like the most progressive of them all.
Obsessed! I had the 2009 dream townhouse and always thought the elevator was too small. Glad they integrated accessibility by 2021 :)
same!
I LOVE THAT AD DID THIS! It's incredible the amount of research and architectural references they comment on here! one of my favorite episodes for sure!
I really wanted that book she wrote but it was a limited edition that sold out quickly. I had the 79 Dream House and it was truly the most amazing toy I ever owned. It was beautiful and stylish and epic for a girl. I ended up giving it and the furniture and my Superstar camper van to a friend back in 1984. KInd of wish I still had those now but don't have the room for them.
I still have my ‘79 and the furniture in the video! Couldn’t part with it.
Barbie Fans would looooove a return of the Magical Mansion! We got like 2 reproductions of the original 60s house, we need different eras now 💖
As someone who has an architecture degree, may I say I appreciated this video so much! The subject matter let’s itself be used in a theory of design class!
I had a Barbie magic house (which is waaaay smaller), without any kitchen in it - just a bed, a bath and a vanity. Totally gave me unrealistic expectations about adult's life, but I won't blame them ; thanks for making me live the dream of just sleeping and putting makeup on.
I would binge watch a full docu-series about this and it would heal my inner child!
Congrats to the marketing team and whatever Barbie dream life spell they've put us under.
We need more. I expected so many other houses that I am feeling unfulfilled. This was so informative and fun.
I still have the A-frame house (buried in the garage), but I guess it's a more updated version. The accents are a lighter shade of pink instead of yellow. The furniture in the traditional dollhouse also brings back some memories. It was like a little Barbie neighborhood in our playroom. Fun times.
Same! I have the A frame in pink too stored away. With the 90s couch dining table, vanity, and kitchen set. I loved that house so much
The 60s one is SO chic! I love the simplicity of it :) The most memorable dream house for me was the 1998 one that I think was pink and had a blue roof? And again was massive!
i had the 1998 and it had this HUGE elevator with a bed that could be a hot tub ❤ great memories
Only doll housed I've had are the fisher pice one and the Ever After High castle. (And the one my grandpa made for my mom. I'm slowly buying those little animal dolls for it because it's the perfect size).
But one of the girls in school had the open one (no walls, just pillars) that was like three stories tall. Always envied her for that. That was in the late 90s very early 2000s.
Love seeing all of these and the breakdown makes it so much more fun!❤
Never knew there are so many words to describe one house, different names for roof, windows, styles, etc. So cool!
I love the original Barbie dream house. I remember playing with it in my grandmother's basement growing up and would honestly buy it if Mattel re-released it!
would love for whitney to talk through a beginner’s guide to american architecture design of the ages - this was already teaching me so much about the styles i like and giving me references and names to jot down for when i’m looking at homes
I was hoping to see the one I had as a kid in the 90s. It was a cottage, one story that opened up like a book. 🥺idk if anyone remembers that one.
The Barbie marketing team will need to hibernate after all of this promo ..... they are on Overdrive 🎀
Foreal it's exhausting!!
That was genuinely excellent. I really enjoyed the chaotic dumpster fire of the 90s. I’ve never paused and thought about the ridiculous excesses of the time… but Barbie’s dream house is there with it writ large in plastic!
I had that first Barbie house and loved it. The cardboard was very heavy and stayed in great shape! It sure takes me back a long time ago.
i have no words for how much I love this video!! I just wished she reviewed more Barbie houses
omg. My older cousin had that A-frame. I remember being very small and playing with it with my barbies. I remember the feel of the plastic, even the sound the yellow doors made when you opened them. :)
please give Whitney Mallett a series where she just drags modern mcmansion homes.
The very first barbie house is much more creative and cute for its time than I expected. Pleasantly surprised, child me would've loved it 😊
I could not love this video more, thank you AD. My two favs architecture and history and barbie thrown in. This expert is amazing I could watch her on every house
My favourite is by far the 60s, and it would be really great if they’d get back to making cardboard houses 😍😍
I actually have all the furniture in this 90s house in a box somewhere! so fun to see! I think my house is a later edition though, it has a pink lift in it ☺️
Well done AD! The 1990s Mansion definitely about status obsession of the 80s and 90s. It also has a lot of Laura Ashley touches with the wall paper and borders, lol.
i wish this video were longer! would love to see even more dreamhouses!!! so fun!
I love the 1990 one. I had the 1998-1999 one as a kid wish it would be included in one of these videos!
I had the 1970s A-Frame house as a kid! I remember having a babysitter who told us she was jealous when she saw it for the first time. 😂
I could listen to her for hours! So interesting ❤
Please make this a series!😍
Thanks for posting. Loved this and this woman definitely knows her stuff.
The '79 A-Frame still looks so 'modern' as if it could have been produced today.
Magical Mansion is forever the most beautiful DOLLHOUSE EVER MADE! (I only wish it was foldable + to have some other colors than pink)
PS could you do a video review of all 2000s Barbie castles? ❤
I really enjoyed this, very insightful would loved if this was longer!
6:39 I just found out that the used Barbie Dream House we had was made the year I was born and I would definitely love to see her go through that one!
This was a really cool take!!! Loved the architectural/design analysis!!
I remember my Barbie Dreamhouse! I got mine in the late 90s so it was definitely more like that 1990 version.
Pq isso é perfeito de assistir ❤ por isso que eu amo Arquitetura
The 70s dream house is the nicest one. I love it! I wish I could’ve played with it.
the 90s dreamhouse to me is really reminiscent of those suburban mansions. for example, the choice of the doric columns made me think of cher´s house in clueless or regina george´s in mean girls
My mom had the first house, and I used to play with it, too! Lots of memories in this video.
Loved this, so fun and interesting. I didn't have a dream house but have a prized 1990s motorhome!
This video is cultural historical and entertaining, really enjoying the Barbie related content
I love that the first two houses were not drenched in pink. I had a lot of Barbie stuff in the late 60s to the mid 70s, most of it wasn't pink.
OMG, seeing the 90's mansion dream house gave me so much goosebumps!! I had all those furniture and that pink sofa is a sofa-bed, at least mine was. Wow, I really miss it. If they bring it back I would totally buy it!
Yes, I had the sofa set & my sister had the dining table. I wish our parents had gotten us the house. I would totally buy it now if they did a reproduction of it.
I've lost the sofa bed itself but we still have the cushion with the 2 fold lines that opens into the coverlet, and the pillows.
The evolution of the houses' style and size seems to show how Barbie got gradually richer and was able to buy more luxurious homes.
Now do the campers. I never got a barbie house but I had two campers with the pop-out tent. Then do the plane and everything else. I can't get enough!! I'm obsessed!
I had a motorhome and it was so cool!
I had the 2000s modern kinda beach house style one. My dad still has it in the his garage along with all my Barbie’s!💓
That one is so cool! It screams Malibu! Barbie like the real houses there I love it
Thank You for showing us these amazing Barbie houses and how they are in the real world architect!
The 90’s Barbie Dreamhouse was and still is the best!
I didn’t expect it to be so educational and fun.
This is incredible! A trip down the Barbie dreamhouse evolution.
We must have had an early 80s version of the 70s dream house where the sides all folded down instead of breaking into three pieces. But we had all the 90s furniture...so nostalgic 🩷
I remember having a Barbie dream house with a staircase that had a tiny platform with a stand to rest the doll while you wind it and pretend she’s walking down the stairs by herself. There was a laundry basket on the second floor bathroom that connected directly to the kitchen below for washing. It also had a removable bedroom on the top floor. Gosh I loved it so much
What a fantastic video. I never knew the history of the Barbie houses. Thank you so much for sharing.

0:14 - The first ever Barbie Dream House was a cube-like structure with a flat roof, big picture windows, and board and batten siding.
2:16 - The 1979 A-frame Dream House featured a plastic A-frame shape, big sky lights, and a color palette inspired by Earth tones.
3:53 - The 1990 Dream House, known as the Magical Mansion, was a pink colonial two-story house with Doric columns and a mix of architectural styles.
6:46 - The 2021 Dream House had a neo-modern design with a flat roof, bright and airy spaces, and eye-catching retro design pieces.
8:04 - Each Dream House reflects the architectural and design trends of the time, and tells a cultural narrative of the era.
As an architect and the fact i grew up playing barbie dolls and houses. I NEED THAT BOOOK ❤💖
I would love to find a 1979 Barbie dream house. It was the coolest one in my opinion.
I just got a flashback to a Barbie dining set I had with full cutlery service. Getting those tiny pink forks out of the packaging was so difficult. 😅
I had the ‘79 Dream House, but it was used when I got it, and the new ones were the same design and all pink. I had a mix of the green/blue furniture and the same molds in pink/rose. I had the blue table (and matching china cabinet) and the pink and white canopy bed, as well as the ridiculously huge pink tub. Maybe this shaped my lifelong desire for my own huge tub? I sold the Dream House and all of its furniture in the early 2000s on ebay. I was just commenting recently that the millennial pink trend (with brass+pink fuzzies) struck me as very Barbie Dream House.
I hope we get to see a car magazine devote time to all the cars Barbie has had over the years too.
I had all the furniture that was in the 1990 Barbie Dreamhouse when I was a kid. Just didn't have the dream house, too expensive. I had this cardboard one instead that my parents got at an off brand toy store. Furniture barely fit in it lol. Just seeing that bedding brings me back.
I love how the first one of the 1960s is all cardboard, making it way better and more sustainable than the plastic ones. It should come full circle and end up with a 2023 one all cardboard too !
This is so cool. I love viewing culture through this lens. So interesting!
Now I know what "Board & Batten" means. Also, this video piqued my curiosity about the descriptions of different era of Barbie's homes. I love it!
Omg, I had the 1970s townhouse!! I was so sad that mine was none of the ones you featured, but then there it was!!! So many memories...
I had the 1974 version with the elevator. I loved that elevator!
I also had the camper van.
Can we just say how amazing her outfit is? It’s like a retro 80’s style.
This was legitimately fascinating!
I was given the original dreamhouse & doll by a relative. I think it's somewhere in storage. Seeing it again really makes me want to get it out.
Barbie was very trendy…ahead of her time. She was already a social media influencer.
Loveeeed this video! The woman explain things in such a fun way!
the progression of "the first barbie house portrayed leaving tradition behind to be an independent and educated woman," to "so barbie's a DJ now," is sending meee
I was so jealous my cousin had that A line house 😩 I had the bootleg townhouse but I appreciated it ❤
I had that 1979 dream house and LOVED it! Memories
Great job! You know your Barbie and you know your architecture!
That 90s Barbie Dreamhouse is still my dreamhouse today
I really like the 1970s doll house, I had one similar to the first doll house, but not of that era.
I love the ‘90s Barbie house 😍😍😍
As a super fan of Barbie and architecture/interior decor, i am eating this up!!!
Omg I would totally watch you do a video on all the dreamhouses, townhouses and so on
My sister and I had the 1995 Barbie dreamhouse 💖 It was amazing. Even had a little elevator. Kinda wish I had kept it.
New film about Barbie started
I’m usually dismissive of all things Barbie but I started watching this and it drew me in. I found this video very interesting historically.
