Hi, this is Marcus from Super Simple Heath,
and today I would like to talk about the benefits and side effects of alfalfa.
    So, first the benefits.
    It contains various nutrients,
but it is particularly rich in vitamin K,
which is important for bone health and wound healing.
Other vitamins and minerals it contains
include vitamin C, copper, manganese and folate.
Alfalfa is also a good source of various bioactive plant compounds,
such as saponins, coumarins, flavonoids, phytosterols, phytoestrogens and alkaloids.
    In fact,
the saponins have been shown to reduce cholesterol levels
in both animal and human studies.
There are some other possible health benefits of alfalfa,
but there has been limited research on these so more studies need to be done.
    For example:
    It may have antioxidant effects,
such as reducing cell death and DNA damage caused by free radicals.
It may possibly help reduce the damage caused by stroke or brain injury.
The phytoestrogens may help to relieve menopausal symptoms.
Okay, so now onto the side effects and warnings.
Alfalfa may possibly stimulate the uterus,
so it should be avoided if you are pregnant.
If you are on blood thinning medication such as warfarin,
the vitamin K in it may cause problems.
Alfalfa sprouts should be avoided if you have a compromised immune system
because the conditions they are grown in can cause bacteria to grow.
You should also avoid alfalfa if you have a hormone-sensitive health issue
such as breast cancer, uterine cancer, ovarian cancer, endometriosis, or uterine fibroids.
This is because the phytoestrogens in it may have an estrogen effect.
    So, there you go,
there are some reasons to avoid alfalfa,
but if you don't fit into any of those situations,
it is a wonderful, healthy vegetable to add to your diet.
    But the great thing is,
you don't actually need to eat fresh alfalfa.
You can get many of the same health benefits
just from taking it in powdered form.

I take one alfalfa tablet daily. I was a former addict and my body was in bad shape. It's been 6 months sober and on alfalfa and I feel like a beast. I feel young and like my old self again
