THANK YOU FOR SUPPORTING THIS CHANNEL!! - Jak na to + styl
Thank you for showing us the mishaps and issues that can arise! You are so much more helpful than the gardening pros that only show the very polished perfect outcome every time.
You’re like the bob Ross of plants and I’m living for it.
Happy gardening and God bless, my friend. RIP, Uncle Bob!
You have 50% more useful info in your videos than other gardening vids.
My Girl Scout troop is going to try this. We grow vegetables in a community garden for a local food bank.
That's amazing! I love hearing younger generations are growing :)
That's so awesome!

Those girls will have adult children before that sawdust breaks down
wow !!! I will try this method .... but Philippines is blessed because we have great land /soil to grow any plants... 😍
Me too as a Filipino. By the way, about the super compost, did he really wait a week to mix them up?
This is so strange that the rain killed the whole outdoor crop. As a kid growing up in Soviet Union we planted potatoes in a communal field every year. It consisted of planting them out in spring, weeding them once mid-summer and digging them up in late summer/early autumn. That’s IT - no watering, treating, etc. The three occasions were bloody hard work, but we always got enough to last a family through a Siberian winter (used to bury them in a sandpit in the underground garage)
Thanks babe can I get back to you now
@@ajjuhafeez ?
Because they were planted in soil, not in a container. There is enough water in the soil, but in containers you need to keep watering.
Irina B or if there is a drought. With too much rain, cover with sheet plastic.
It seems like a lot has changed over the years. Gardening is done so differently these days. Back in the 70’s my dad used to just plow a large plot, throw seeds all through it and the veggies all just miraculously came up. Drought, heavy rains, fungus, disease, pests never harmed the garden.
It makes me wonder why gardening has become so much more an effort in today’s world. 🤔
I know this is container gardening, but still, having to go through so much for so little seems strange.
I'm 16 and from the US and last year I remember growing potatoes that we bought from the store it was about 4 and I'm still new to growing my own fruits and vegetables but it's really fun. My harvest was good for a beginner at least I think but I appreciate the vids.
I am so happy that you included the pictures of the different diseases that can affect potatoes because I could not figure out what took over my crop. All the leaves started dying and it broke my heart after they looked so healthy and beautiful. Love the video.
Thanks for your patience and persistence in showing all the stages over the weeks and months. Your work shows great diligence. Great videos!
You're welcome :)

My Father said the best crop of potatoes he ever saw was in a neighbour’s yard where there was a huge mound of old saw dust with potatoes growing through it. He loved gardening vegetables and this fascinated him.
We just started our compost bin yesterday using a garbage can. Your "recipe" tips are incredibly helpful. Thank you!
You are amazing in explaining. It was a pleasure watching your video. Thanks
With the covid19 forcing us into lockdown growing food has become critical. Thanks for this information. That bag of red potatoes I bought at the store is going to become seed potatoes if they eye up.
I've been using sawdust for years as part of my soil mix. I take a shovel of dirt, add a bunch of ashes and chunk charcoal, and then add a couple shovels of the sawdust. I get them right out from under my table saw, so I know exactly what is in there. It acts like peat for holding moisture, but also breaks down over time, adding more nutrients. I've also started adding a little StallDri to the mix to aid in drainage.
I mix this all up in a wheel barrow. It's a little dry looking at first, but I have had good success with it for trees, and now, for veggies as well.
you're such a honest and genuine guy to share your gardening experience, that's exactly what we should learn. Thanks again!
Thanks for the upload, not seen someone actually show when to cover with next layer, always wondered if to fully cover the leaves or not
Hilling or earthing up should be done as soon as the plant is about 10cm/4" tall, to the full height of the plant, providing it is an indeterminate variety of potato.
Don't pack the soil down, just add it.
After that earth up every two or three weeks.
Glad for your honesty. Knowing what to expect with weather is so helpful, thank you. Better luck next time.
I wash about to plant my potatoes when I came across this video - so glad I watch your video first - I never knew about chitting !
I'll show this to my dad tomorrow 👍
I didn't watch this before I planted mine, so I did virtually everything wrong.lol very good information
Very complete synopsis, I learned a lot watching this.
Easily the best how-to I've seen on CZcams for pots. Thanks!
Great, concise, understandable video. Particularly useful for newbies like me. Just what I needed before starting to sow my first crop. Cheers mate.
Thank you for your videos and thank you for not promoting brands or products and trying to sell us stuff! I appreciate the sawdust/coffee grounds mixture and the home made products you use as I am always trying to rig up my own garden mixtures to avoid buying very pricey fertilizer products. Growing food can get very pricey if you fall into the trap of buying all the products most of the gardening channels promote! Heading out to plant my seed potatoes in some grow bags right now. Thanks again
I'm going to follow this tutorial! Ive requested some sawdust from freecycle and will get coffee grounds from the work canteen :) thanks so much!
This video was very helpful. I was worried that I was doing it wrong, due to other people having different techniques to planting potatoes in containers. Thank you for easing my fears 😁
Well done, and it's worth showing this channel to others. Nice to see young people so interested and knowledgeable.
5 years later, just a thanks for such a well done video.
I'm really getting into the homestead lifestyle, I appreciate ur work and videos. Thank you.
Clear and comprehensive. Sarpo Mara are a great strain of Hungarian potatoes - big as a baby's head, pink with clear skin. Yum ! Companion planting is crucial for ridding your plants of bugs. Calendula [flower, companion plant]
I’m looking to grow potato’s and tomatoes so thank you for sharing all the dos and don’ts and what to look out for.💚🍀🌿
Your video was fantastic. I learned so much, particularly about chitting potatoes, and am ready to plant potatoes in the Spring. Thanks, again. Mobile, Alabama USA
You did a really good job with your presentation. Very clear. Keep up the good work. Very helpful to me as a notive but greedy for knowledge gardener.
Thank you for showing what can go wrong. Too many vids out there share only successes. I think it’s much more useful to inform new gardeners like me with what is realistic and prepare us with problem solving know-hows.
Great video! Thanks for showing when the weather works against us 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
Thanks for the honest assessment of growing food--refreshing to see the up and downsides of it!
Only way to be plus all these videos are my first time growing so I'm hoping people learn from my mistakes just as much as my success :)
Very good information. Thank you.
Great tutorial, as usual! Thank you for posting this! I'm sorry you lost so much due to the weather.
Last year I found some burlap coffee sacks priced at $1 each. Several of them had an especially tight weave with nylon threads throughout, which seemed quite sturdy. I bought as many as I could, and used them to plant in. They worked beautifully, especially for potatoes, as I was able to fold them up and down as the potatoes grew. They're still holding up like new, and growing potatoes once again this year!
That's awesome! Well done :)
Your video is one of the best video showing how to grow potatoes in container! Good work!
I love this channel! Just procured my first allotment and you've inspired me. All of the claim and none of the blame, as it were.
That's awesome! Good luck growing in your new Allotment :)
Grow root veggies &garlic &spring onions
I have grown my Potatooooooos from shop bought 👌🏼 🥔
I have in my garden 3 pcs of 60litres bags with potatos. I Can not wait 😃
By the way, yesterday I made some of seedlings_packets. I was doing it according to your guidance. Thank you! 😁
Thanks for the tips. My potatoes didn’t grow, well I got 3 small ones! Watching this I realise why! 😂 New veggie gardener here. Learning by mistakes. Got to say the birds in the back ground sound beautiful. I’m easily distracted too! 🤣
Thank you so much for this video. I’ve subscribed. You make a fantastic gardening tutor.
Love how happy you are gardening, nice info thanks for sharing!
Correction, I am from America and grow potatoes from potatoes forever! Tx for some of the tips...unique
Nice to see Jay Kay working again.
Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge on growing vegetables. It's done in a way that is easy to follow and your smile and personality add to the pleasure of learning. God bless you and keep you safe and healthy.
Just to make sure I understand, the compost mix is 1:1 coffee grounds:sawdust by weight, that is, 1 pound of coffee grounds to 1 pound of sawdust. Correct?
This video is so useful. Thank you for sharing good tips. Now I know how to grow my potato correctly. 💕
You're welcome. I wish you luck in trying this :)
Thanks for taking the time to do this, I'm gonna try this out. I've got tons of sawdust and would never have thought to try that. Our recycle containers (in Scotland anyway) are about that size. I was able to collect a dozen or so from the local recycling centre, really handy for using around the garden.
2018 was the first year I tried growing potatoes in pots. I used potatoes from the grocery store (Yukon Gold and generic white). I waited for chits.
The same grocery store's floral department gave me a dozen or so large black pots that their flower deliveries come in.
I drilled drainage holes in the bottom of the pots, put in some of my version of Mel's Mix then put in one sprouted potato and filled the pot up.
Eventually, all of the pots saw green growth above the soil line. Well, in August, so did our local deer population which ate all of the greenery!
So I dug out a hole, put in some more Yukon Gold sprouted potatoes and now in October have more green showing. So far, no deer raids.
We have deer roaming about our neighborhood - and I will be sure to keep my fence doors shut to protect my spuds! We used to have a raccoon but chased him away with ammonia smells. He overturned plants and pots, bit them and dragged them all over, for a time I thought we had a baby bear running riot every night.
What happened to the potatoes, after the deer cropped the greenery?
I'd have lifted them.
At the vey least you'd have had baby potatoes and, at worst, had seed potatoes for the following year.
Finally someone who explains it clearly 👍
There is plenty of sawdust around where I live. Lots of carpenter shops in their backyards. Thanks for these ideas!
Great idea to grow potatoes in containers, that's awesome 👍
I love your detailed video, I am a new grower and will definitely use your tips to grow some yummy food for my family and I. Thank you for the growers knowledge .

Thank you you're very helpful information. I never knew green potatoes were poisonous very nice to know specially want to go to the supermarket and see him green at times.
Thank you for great info! Will try😊 Much respect to your on point videos🙏✨
Started watching your videos a couple of months ago and decided to start my own indoor garden (too many stray animals to feel safe growing them outdoors). So far I’ve managed to grow tomatoes, bell peppers, and marigolds successfully. Going to wait a few weeks and try my hand at a few other vegetables. Thank you for all the tips you give, they are very helpful! 😁
Years ago, an old farmer told me the same thing, "grow potatoes in saw dust and they'll grow good!". I tried that for the first time last year, with a handful of seed potatoes. I have a place next to my cabin where I've cut firewood for many years. It has a thick mat of saw dust. I roped off a section with twine to keep the deer out and planted the potatoes. They did great in that saw dust! I hope to grow a much bigger patch this year.
If you can't get sawdust can you use shredded (crosscut) food grade cardboard boxes??
yet the video shared a lot of knowledge. awesome, mate.
Glad you liked it :)
Finally!!!! An in progress video on container potatoes. Thank you! Like and sub mate!😀👏
