I have always had a supportive Husband, and one who has encouraged me, so I don't lack in that area, however I do understand not being supported in something you love to do. We crafters love to make things, in fact many of us probably are also interested in many craft mediums, such as sewing, crocheting, needlework, you name it, we have to try it, lol. It's part of who we are. It's an outlet we need. So you keep making your pretty cards and don't let others steal your contentment. ☺ 🎨
Six years later and that’s the best advice I’ve heard about a crafter! I’ve been feeling so guilty because I’ve put a lot of money into my different ‘stages of crafts’ only a few years later to have an interest in yet another one! So I’m normal after all!! 😁👍 I’m a bona fide crafter!
Majority of the time people can be so rude. I don't understand why someone will give her a thumbs down when she's only trying to help us out on the card making process and everything else that we might need to learn or we're having trouble with; you know what, I think I do understand; people who gives the thumbs down are sooo jealous and envious, just because they would like to do what Maymay is doing and they are to shy or simply they don't have the guts to be on camera even though on CZcams you don't have to show your face, or they do have a channel and instead of encouraging they feel like they want to put someone down and wowww this all comes from evilness. Hi MayMay. About 25 years ago I got into scrapbooking and then card making. Over time, I became involved in other things. About two years ago, however, my interest renewed in both of those activities. As I started watching CZcams videos, I was AMAZED how much both of those crafts had changed! Acyrlic blocks and stamps, all sorts of tapes and adhesives, foam tape, various types of paper trimmers, an overwhelming amount ink types, not to mention a mind boggling array of markers. I was lost in the terminology and products. For example, I kept hearing what sounded like 'winkastellar'. I could not figure out what people were saying, so I finally Googled what I thought I was hearing. Luckily Google knew what I wanted and offered searches on "Wink of Stella". Score! Out of all of the many questions I had when I got back into cardmaking, I have made a list of some ideas that you might could use for future CZcams "how-to" cardmaking videos. I mean, you DID ask us to comment. :) Ideas for cardmaking subjects: How to add ink to a stamp and how to actually apply the stamp to the paper Acrylic stamp blocks vs stamp presses (Fiskars style) vs stamping tools like the MISTI Difference between acrylic stamps, rubber stamps (wood mounted) and rubber cling stamps How to clean and take care of stamps Types of inks and markers Paper trimmers and how to use them; types of scissors - this would be a good time to explain "fussy cutting" - we used to just say "cut it out" (haha) Ideas for a few good, versatile stamps to begin a stamp "stash" Card stock weights - which is best for bases vs which is best for card fronts Basic supplies (I think you did a video on this subject a few years ago?) Adhesives - glue, tape runners, "sticky tape" Typical card sizes and envelopes What is/are: an ink blending tool, Wink of Stella, score board, scoring tool, bone folder, reverse tweezers, Crop-a-dile I have more ideas, but I'll stop. I'm an English crafter in the UK and I MUCH prefer your A2 sized cards, which I make myself, to our UK A6 ones. A6 ones are a little slimmer and also taller - but don't look as balanced as USA A2 to me. Glad to have found you and am now subscribed.
Someone had a question about inks. I learned this tip for remebering the drying order of inks --- just remember the ABCs - from fastest to slowest drying inks, it goes like this - Chalk, Dye, and Pigment. Hope this helps!
I have been making cards for 21 years, and I wish I had been told not to go hung ho buying every stamp set you see. Maybe tell people to look at a set and see what they can do with it. How often it will be used. Birthday sets will always be used but certain sets will maybe only get used once. Sentiment sets are fabulous and I have a lot, but again I wish I had catalogued the sentiments as I bought them so I knew what I had. I will do it, but it will take time. I have a "new stuff" draw, where I put my new crafty items so I can use them straight away, and then put them where they belong. Also try not to buy too many embellishments unless you will be using them. I have draws full and have given may away to crafty friends. Hope I've been some help Maymay. Thanks for your videos. That's so true! I have bought so many things and now have to go searching for designs that use those sites or stamps so I can get ideas on using them. I really think ALL new cardmaking should only have one stamp and die set and have to use it for a whole month before they're allowed to buy anything new - until they've exhausted all ways to use those items. Then one new thing a month after that (like a paper pad, or a couple of new ink colours) it Really overloads out brains to have so much stuff and not enough knowledge or ideas
My 3 children, aged 30, 17 & 11 always say I'm wasting money buying stock for making cards, even though I enjoy it as a hobby after losing my job through disability. Funny enough though, when my grandkids aged 8, 7, & 2 have friends birthday parties to go to, likewise my daughter & son, they come asking 'mummy do you have a card I could give to so-&-so! They don't mind me having a hobby then lol. My 7yr old granddaughter and I love making cards together, especially for her mummy if she's feeling tired from working full-time and raising her & her brothers. Julie-Anne Myers No dear Julie-Ann, is not a waste of money. I've have been into card making for several years now, I don't do it for a living but i haven't bought a card for a long time. I have done my Christmas cards for several years now and I even made my daughter's first communion, confirmation and fifteen celebration cards in the past, so it is a useful skill, specially if you have children. But the most important fact for me about caerdmaking is that it is therapeutic, i can de-stress while i am working on a card, I find my peaceful, happy place, where i can get centered and balanced again... and to me that is priceless. I use all the coupons and sales that I can get my hands on to get my tools and supplies. Joann and Michael's have always their 40% off and other coupons that you can combine sometimes, amazon, eBay and Walmart online offer great prices too, I have bought dies from Aliexpress.com at unbelievable prices (but you have to be patient because they take their time to get here from China). By the way, they work great, I was dubious at first, but many youtubers were trying them so I went for it and they don't dissapoint. When Cricut is on sale they also have great prices and you can also use MayMay code. I encourage you to try these sales and online places to bring your costs down. Oh! I was forgetting Tuesday Morning, I got a bunch of embossing folder (Darice) for 0.99 cents a piece and 2.99 (WRMK) a piece, my envelope punch board for 9.99 a year (or maybe 2) ago. Hey always have something new, last time i went I they had Martha Stewart and Heidi Swapp stuff at great prices, it felt like Chistmas day to me. 😊 Have a great day and Happy Crafting!

Julie-Anne Myers, I, too, am disabled and my husband and son feel pretty much the same way. I just ignore them and keep doing what I love. I have crafted all my life and don't plan to stop anytime soon. You keep on doing what makes you happy.
Julie-Anne Myers I would simply respond respectfully by saying that it is a hobby that brings you peace and joy and helps you to better deal with your disability so it isn't a waste in your opinion. Besides, if it is your money then it is your business. I no longer work because of disability and paper crafting has given me something else to focus on which has made me a more positive person. It has also brought me a community here on CZcams that I did not have before crafting.

I'm actually thinking of buying the cricut paper trimmer Maymay uses but I always have to check out shipping costs to Northern Ireland as sometimes it's a lot more expensive than the item but thanks again for your advice on money saving. I don't know if you've tried this but I buy of the channel 'Create & Craft', they also have a base in America.
You are on the right channel to learn card making..Maymay is an awesome teacher and very easy to follow. You can check other videos as well or see if a craft store in your area teaches card making. I've been making cards for 15 years and I still learn new things all the time!
What an excellent guide to card making! I think that you should follow the progression of this card -- inside next. Once your new card making viewers master the A2 card, they can move on to other sizes!
I tend to make more 5x7 cards so I have more room to embellish. The one mistake I made when I first started paper crafting was buying lots of embellishments that I loved. I wish I would have spent my money more wisely on things to coordinate with papers.
One thing I learned after doing cards for a few years: Score once - cut once. I used to cut all my 8 1/2" x 11 in half to make the 4 1/4 x 5 1/2" wide cards and then score each of the two pieces seperately. Now I score the cardstock first with the 8 1/2" side lined up at the top, then I flip the sheet and cut it at 5 1/2". Not a huge time saver but it does take time off if you are making multiple cards.

I have a lot of supplies I've collected...stamps, tulle, buttons, embellishments, etc. I also have cardstock, solid and printed. My hangup is actually designing the cards. Choosing colors & patterns that would look good together overwhelms me, I guess, and figuring out what embellishment is going to look right with what...I never know how to put it all together. I guess I'm trying to say the design area is my biggest problem. I've never really been a card person...never been one to send lots of cards, but I have this overwhelming need to make them. And, by the way, I'm just a little hooked on your videos and am forever grateful for everything you do for us, Maymay! You're a true blessing in more ways than one!
Love this series! I'd like to see ideas on finishing the inside of the card--sentiments, stamping, embellishments, etc. I've made a ton of cards since I met you earlier this year, but very few have anything inside, and while I like to write a personal note, sometimes I don't. Thanks!

I think this "Back to Basics" is a great idea... Cover it all including all types of types of embellishments, embossing (dry & heat), background, inking...Etc... I know this video was made in 2017. I still want to thank you in 2019 for making this video and teaching us how to get started with card making. You are so kind, clear and concise. I have a feeling your videos will be treasured for generations.
I've read through all the questions and if you have the time, watch all Maymay's videos. She has answered every question at one time or another. Like when to use wet glue and when to use 2 sided tape....and what inks to use for what your project is...and how to choose a good cutter or scissors. If you're going to try your hand at stamping, Maymay is one of the best stampers ever. I watched all the videos I could from all the major crafters and got a wider view of how others craft. I like to watch people from the UK as they definitely have a different way of crafting.

I am a newbie at making cards. My biggest problem has been that my paper trimming tool was not cutting my card bases or my mattes correctly. I would cut them and then place them together and they always looked crooked and out-of-whack.. To fix this issue, I did invest in a better paper trimming tool with a rotary blade - this has made a big difference. Maymay, I just wanted to tell you that you have been and continue to be a major influence in my crafting world. I learn new things everyday - I consider you my go-to crafter!!!!! Thanks so much for all that you share with us, it is greatly appreciated.
Embellishing we know can be quite expensive, I've found lots of items can be purchased @ the Dollar Store to get folks started. The fun foam for dimensions, glitter, stickers, dollies and the list goes on and on. That would have been very helpful in the beginning for me luv ; )

it does have to do with mailing. You can go to the USPS site and see what sizes and weights will go with standard postage. Maybe you can address this MayMay.
Great idea MayMay, I wished I had this tutorial when I started. I just did whatever, but never sent my cards because of there size. I learned by going to the store and buying card blanks and decorating them. I didn't know about this wonderful card .taking internet family then. I've learned so much since then. This is what I would like to do also, teach others about card making. I started my cards with the sentiment and designed from there. Card sizes, layers, tools, stamps, embellishments. Thanks MayMay. I have a lot of paper and glue, and I know it should come together somehow, but I need lessons! I would like to see some instruction on design fundamentals - what is naturally appealing to the eye, something like "the rule of three." I need to know squares and circles and flags and what makes a good design putting these elements together. I would also like instruction on color combinations - complimentary, contrast - and when to use them, or why.
I just started making cards for my first craft fair. I don't have a score board or a paper trimmer, so I decided to buy premade, pre scored card to start with. Hopefully soon I can afford everything soon and be able to build the card from base up, instead of taking "shortcuts". Love your tutorials, and you're not far from where I live.

I've been "card making" for a few years and something like this would've really made my learning curve a lot shorter. Although I've managed to get a grasp of the basics the one concept I still struggle with is pattern papers. I always thought of myself as someone who understood color, until I tried to use more than one pattern on a card. Most of the videos I've watch talk about using patterns within one pad. Unfortunately I ran amuck in the beginning, buying any pad I could find on sale & usually based on only a couple patterns within that I really liked, DOH ! So now I'm left to struggle with trying to match patterns from different pads. All that to suggest two videos that a "newbie" might appreciate - one on purchasing paper, and one on matching patterns. This is wonderful. Just the help anyone who is just starting out will need. I am someone who is learning all on their own and cards have been a bit of a struggle since I always cut and fold on the wrong sides.
I have been in caerdmaking for several years now, I don't do it for a living but I love it, it is my escape, my peaceful and happy place. I don't buy cards anymore, I make my Christmas and special ocassion cards, I have a bunch of bought ones that I rarely use only if something came up and I didn't had the time to work on it, but i am working on having a stash ready to go for that instances too ☺. I had to figure all this out on my own, learning the hard way, watching videos here and there, taking some classes when they were available for the first time on Craftsy (their papercrafting section was so small in the beginning), following crafters like yourself. It is very kind of you to do this series for the new cardmakers MayMay, it will be a lot easier for them to have a place to go, where everything is all together and someone available to answer their questions. Love making cards, what I had a problem with was in layering the card base I felt like my card was top heavy. So I mat the inside as well. Only on the opposite side of my cover. Can't wait to see more!

I'm a newbie at cardmaking. With this video I am making lots of bases to start with. I want to make my mom a box full of cards for Christmas and put it in a decorated cigar box.
You know I'm never disappointed with whatever you present but I have to admit that I could use help with the inside and maybe making a card front (blank - with no sentiments) that I can easily later add the appropriate sentiment when I'm needing a quick card.

What I do do is use immiges from magazines or leaflets that I can get free and make cards or albums from them, I love to recycle as here in Italy designer paper is very expensive and you don't get DT or Michaels, where I am living. Well to wrap up as you say you don't have to spend much to craft. THANK YOU so much.
Great tutorial. I started making cards but really needed to find a basic " how to" as was confused by all the options out there. Now I can start with basic card, measurements, layering and it all makes sense! The Cricut/fancy stamping/embossing etc, will have to wait while I get the basics right! Such fun! Thank you!
Hi MayMay, My suggestion on the beginning Card making. Is have a good trimmer. So your paper doesn't flare at the end which makes your cards look lopsided. Also when you get into stamping. Be sure not to rock your stamps which cause you to catch an edge. A good shammy or baby wipe works great for cleaning the edges prior to stamping. Last invest in a sand eraser only a few dollars which helps if you accidentally smudge your card with a tiny bit of ink from one of your fingers.
This is excellent for beginners, I am going to share this with a group that I have been working with. I would also like you to share using pattern papers, that is an area they seem to have trouble with.
I would like to see how to make simple borders for the edges of your cards using scissors and scallop scissors. then some tips on punches and how to get mileage out of your punches.
Great idea, so much to teach a intermediate novice, I have learned through CZcams and classes at my local stamp&stuff store. This first lesson was awesome--I have a folder with card templates, now I must make borders for card sizes. Other ideas----tools, adhesives, stamping, die cuts, embellishments. I can go on.
So important to use heavyweight card stock as a base- trust me, you don't want your cards to warp over time! I made that mistake early on. Thanks Maymay!
I make all sizes of cards & so can you, BUT if you plan to mail them, find out what size can be mailed without extra postage due to being outside the standard range. If you don't mind extra postage, then do what you like. You may have to pay extra for weight, but not as often as you may think. Have fun!

I know you've received hundreds of comments but I have to say, I LOVED THIS!!! I started paper crafting about a year ago and have been trying to figure it out ever since! I could not get my mind around the math! Thanks so much for this "series"! My issue: I don't know how to cut the paper in the most economical way! I saw you tell Vinne to "hold up!" Before he cut his camo (for his heArt journal) paper because you wanted to make sure he got the best bang for his buck! I just hack away like a kindergartener! I will be watching! TFS.

I would love to have you talk about standard sizes concerning postage when mailing a card such as what is the largest size you can mail for a single stamp or what sizes would require extra postage. I am an experienced card maker, but I think people would want to know about other sizes and what the postage requirements would be for them. We all need these basic videos as reminders because we can forget basic steps in cardmaking! I know 6 X 6 cards are popular, but I tend to not make that size for mailing because of the postage issue. I think new card makers would like to,know about mailing issues too. Love all of your tips!
As a veteran card-maker, I still struggle with using tools like the perfect borders rulers and the stamp-a-ma-jig. I don't know why, I have seen so many tutorials (including yours) that show perfect results each time but mine never turn out that way. A piece of advice for those getting started: do not get carried away with the ancillary items that lines and companies show as being SO awesome and useful. JUST PICK ONE and use it up before buying something else. Otherwise you waste money and space in your house (ie: dry glitter, glitter glue, glitter gel pens, glitter embossing powder and wink of stella all can pretty much do the exact same thing to a card). I would also advise that dry adhesives are the bomb and tombow mono is touted by everyone as being wonderful. However, they never mention that it NEVER fully dries; any Tombow Mono that accidentally seeped out or dropped on your card will remain sticky when your recipient gets it or you pull it out of your folder 2+ years later- TRUST ME.
Hi Maymay, thank you so much for sharing your talent with us. I have been making cards for about 15 years , and I wish someone had told me that it is ok to leave empty space on your cards. For example when I first started I thought that if you could see the card base or mat it was wrong. Every single bit had to be covered with an embellishment of some kind. I was so embarrassed when someone told me they were gaudy. Looking back I am very greatful. My cards aren't perfect. ( I don't do perfect...lol.) But they are made with lots of love.
I like to put a piece of cardstock cut to 5 1/4 x 4" inside the card unattached. I'll stamp a coordinating image in the bottom corner. I also include a little note to explain why I left it detached. Reason is because I encourage my recipients to forward the card on to someone else. I do this normally with my "Hello" type of cards or a get well card. Something not so personal. I know store bought cards find their way to the landfills so quickly and so often. My goal is to keep it going. My recipients LOVE this. They eagerly await the next card that I send to them.
I think this is GREAT! I wish I would have had this kind of help when I started out. I am teaching others how to make cards - this series will really help me.
The best thing about making cards is that you can most likely use what you already have. Basic scrap booking & paper crafting supplies are really all you need. I've been making cards for over 5 years and I do not have a Cricut. Would I like to have one? Sure, but it's not required to make greeting cards. I'd rather put my money into good quality card-stock and adhesives than in tools. ALSO, I've found having a Pinterest board for color-combination ideas is very helpful.
Great tutorial - I found LOTS of stuff on pinterest, too. I get inspiration from beautiful papers; origami paper is often inexpensive and can easily be glued with a tape runner. I think it's best for beginners to start with the size you mentioned and the "KISS" method - Keep It Simple, Sweetie. My problem comes to how to get the sentiments on, and finding just one or two stamp sets that will fit many occasions. Thanks again!
I am terrified of making cards. I have only made 2 cards. So I am not experienced in any way. I have bought so much stuff to do paper crafting: Scrapbooking, Cards, and watercoloring, I buy beautiful paper pads,, stamps, markers, pens, crayons, inks, brushes, ATG, Tape, glues,foam every way available, stickers, dies, Big Shot Plus, embossing powders, heat gun but I’m afraid to do anything. I watch you ladies craft all day, and night on CZcams🤷🏻♀️. Easter my sister might help me🤷🏻♀️. But, I have done my part to help the economy by help keeping craft stores in business.🤷🏻♀️. I could craft for the rest of my life, and would never need anything. So, I’m looking forward to your instructions, and tips.

I would recommend any or all of these topics: a complete set of card sizes review, where to get inspiration (beyond Pinterest), basic tools vs advanced tools, a beginners methodology (i.e. Select idea, select paper, sentiment, etc), selling cards, donating cards, how to package and store handmade cards, what's copyrighted and what's not, the color wheel, and most importantly, using what you have in your stash. I am sure I could come up with a greater list but this is a good start. PS. As for inspiration you never know where you'll find it--- I once attended a conference for work and ended up sketching the crown molding of the conference room as it was interesting. If you are stuck for color combos walk down the aisles of the grocery store as major brands pay big bucks for colors in packaging. Ok I'll be quiet now!
I'm a newbie, I watch channels who say that they donate their cards. I would love to do that. I was thinking of taking them to nursing homes for the staff to give to residents. Especially ones that don't have family or friends close by, some don't have anyone.
I have been a quilter for 30+ years and got into the Scan n Cut machine. I swore I would never do paper crafting, but I have spent the last 2 solid weeks soaking up every bit of info on this craft. I have always had a supportive Husband, and one who has encouraged me, so I don't lack in that area, however I do understand not being supported in something you love to do. We crafters love to make things, in fact many of us probably are also interested in many craft mediums, such as sewing, crocheting, needlework, you name it, we have to try it, lol. It's part of who we are. It's an outlet we need. So you keep making your pretty cards and don't let others steal your contentment. ☺ 🎨
Six years later and that’s the best advice I’ve heard about a crafter! I’ve been feeling so guilty because I’ve put a lot of money into my different ‘stages of crafts’ only a few years later to have an interest in yet another one! So I’m normal after all!! 😁👍 I’m a bona fide crafter!
Majority of the time people can be so rude. Hi MayMay. About 25 years ago I got into scrapbooking and then card making. Over time, I became involved in other things. About two years ago, however, my interest renewed in both of those activities. As I started watching CZcams videos, I was AMAZED how much both of those crafts had changed! Acyrlic blocks and stamps, all sorts of tapes and adhesives, foam tape, various types of paper trimmers, an overwhelming amount ink types, not to mention a mind boggling array of markers. I was lost in the terminology and products. For example, I kept hearing what sounded like 'winkastellar'. I could not figure out what people were saying, so I finally Googled what I thought I was hearing. Luckily Google knew what I wanted and offered searches on "Wink of Stella". Score!
Out of all of the many questions I had when I got back into cardmaking, I have made a list of some ideas that you might could use for future CZcams "how-to" cardmaking videos. I mean, you DID ask us to comment. :)

How to add ink to a stamp and how to actually apply the stamp to the paper
Acrylic stamp blocks vs stamp presses (Fiskars style) vs stamping tools like the MISTI
Difference between acrylic stamps, rubber stamps (wood mounted) and rubber cling stamps
How to clean and take care of stamps
Types of inks and markers
Paper trimmers and how to use them; types of scissors - this would be a good time to explain "fussy cutting" - we used to just say "cut it out" (haha)
Ideas for a few good, versatile stamps to begin a stamp "stash"
Card stock weights - which is best for bases vs which is best for card fronts
Basic supplies (I think you did a video on this subject a few years ago?)
Adhesives - glue, tape runners, "sticky tape"
Typical card sizes and envelopes
What is/are: an ink blending tool, Wink of Stella, score board, scoring tool, bone folder, reverse tweezers, Crop-a-dile

I'm an English crafter in the UK and I MUCH prefer your A2 sized cards, which I make myself, to our UK A6 ones. A6 ones are a little slimmer and also taller - but don't look as balanced as USA A2 to me. Glad to have found you and am now subscribed.
Someone had a question about inks. I learned this tip for remebering the drying order of inks --- just remember the ABCs - from fastest to slowest drying inks, it goes like this - Chalk, Dye, and Pigment. Hope this helps!
I have been making cards for 21 years, and I wish I had been told not to go hung ho buying every stamp set you see. Maybe tell people to look at a set and see what they can do with it. How often it will be used. Birthday sets will always be used but certain sets will maybe only get used once. Sentiment sets are fabulous and I have a lot, but again I wish I had catalogued the sentiments as I bought them so I knew what I had. I will do it, but it will take time. I have a "new stuff" draw, where I put my new crafty items so I can use them straight away, and then put them where they belong. Also try not to buy too many embellishments unless you will be using them. I have draws full and have given may away to crafty friends. Hope I've been some help Maymay. Thanks for your videos. That's so true! I have bought so many things and now have to go searching for designs that use those sites or stamps so I can get ideas on using them. I really think ALL new cardmaking should only have one stamp and die set and have to use it for a whole month before they're allowed to buy anything new - until they've exhausted all ways to use those items. Then one new thing a month after that (like a paper pad, or a couple of new ink colours) it Really overloads out brains to have so much stuff and not enough knowledge or ideas
My 3 children, aged 30, 17 & 11 always say I'm wasting money buying stock for making cards, even though I enjoy it as a hobby after losing my job through disability. Funny enough though, when my grandkids aged 8, 7, & 2 have friends birthday parties to go to, likewise my daughter & son, they come asking 'mummy do you have a card I could give to so-&-so! They don't mind me having a hobby then lol. My 7yr old granddaughter and I love making cards together, especially for her mummy if she's feeling tired from working full-time and raising her & her brothers. No dear Julie-Ann, is not a waste of money. I've have been into card making for several years now, I don't do it for a living but i haven't bought a card for a long time. I have done my Christmas cards for several years now and I even made my daughter's first communion, confirmation and fifteen celebration cards in the past, so it is a useful skill, specially if you have children. But the most important fact for me about caerdmaking is that it is therapeutic, i can de-stress while i am working on a card, I find my peaceful, happy place, where i can get centered and balanced again... and to me that is priceless. I use all the coupons and sales that I can get my hands on to get my tools and supplies. Joann and Michael's have always their 40% off and other coupons that you can combine sometimes, amazon, eBay and Walmart online offer great prices too, I have bought dies from Aliexpress.com at unbelievable prices (but you have to be patient because they take their time to get here from China). By the way, they work great, I was dubious at first, but many youtubers were trying them so I went for it and they don't dissapoint. When Cricut is on sale they also have great prices and you can also use MayMay code. I encourage you to try these sales and online places to bring your costs down. Oh! I was forgetting Tuesday Morning, I got a bunch of embossing folder (Darice) for 0.99 cents a piece and 2.99 (WRMK) a piece, my envelope punch board for 9.99 a year (or maybe 2) ago. Hey always have something new, last time i went I they had Martha Stewart and Heidi Swapp stuff at great prices, it felt like Chistmas day to me. 😊 Have a great day and Happy Crafting!

Julie-Anne Myers, I, too, am disabled and my husband and son feel pretty much the same way. I just ignore them and keep doing what I love. I have crafted all my life and don't plan to stop anytime soon. You keep on doing what makes you happy.
Julie-Anne Myers I would simply respond respectfully by saying that it is a hobby that brings you peace and joy and helps you to better deal with your disability so it isn't a waste in your opinion. Besides, if it is your money then it is your business. I no longer work because of disability and paper crafting has given me something else to focus on which has made me a more positive person. It has also brought me a community here on CZcams that I did not have before crafting.

I'm actually thinking of buying the cricut paper trimmer Maymay uses but I always have to check out shipping costs to Northern Ireland as sometimes it's a lot more expensive than the item but thanks again for your advice on money saving. I don't know if you've tried this but I buy of the channel 'Create & Craft', they also have a base in America.
You are on the right channel to learn card making..Maymay is an awesome teacher and very easy to follow. You can check other videos as well or see if a craft store in your area teaches card making. I've been making cards for 15 years and I still learn new things all the time!

Yes it is 8.5 x 5.5 or you can cut a sheet of 8.5 x 11 on the 8.5 side and cut at 4.5

What an excellent guide to card making! I think that you should follow the progression of this card -- inside next. Once your new card making viewers master the A2 card, they can move on to other sizes!
I like the card outline ideas. It helps a lot for new card makers.
I tend to make more 5x7 cards so I have more room to embellish. The one mistake I made when I first started paper crafting was buying lots of embellishments that I loved. I wish I would have spent my money more wisely on things to coordinate with papers.
A great basic card class ... I've been doing it for about 20 years
One thing I learned after doing cards for a few years:
Score once - cut once.
I used to cut all my 8 1/2" x 11 in half to make the 4 1/4 x 5 1/2" wide cards and then score each of the two pieces seperately. Now I score the cardstock first with the 8 1/2" side lined up at the top, then I flip the sheet and cut it at 5 1/2". Not a huge time saver but it does take time off if you are making multiple cards.
What to use to glue the layers. Some glues get to water and mess the paper up.

I have a lot of supplies I've collected...stamps, tulle, buttons, embellishments, etc. I also have cardstock, solid and printed. My hangup is actually designing the cards. Choosing colors & patterns that would look good together overwhelms me, I guess, and figuring out what embellishment is going to look right with what...I never know how to put it all together. I guess I'm trying to say the design area is my biggest problem. I've never really been a card person...never been one to send lots of cards, but I have this overwhelming need to make them. And, by the way, I'm just a little hooked on your videos and am forever grateful for everything you do for us, Maymay! You're a true blessing in more ways than one!

I know this video was made in 2017. I still want to thank you in 2019 for making this video and teaching us how to get started with card making. You are so kind, clear and concise. I have a feeling your videos will be treasured for generations.
I've read through all the questions and if you have the time, watch all Maymay's videos. She has answered every question at one time or another. Like when to use wet glue and when to use 2 sided tape....and what inks to use for what your project is...and how to choose a good cutter or scissors. If you're going to try your hand at stamping, Maymay is one of the best stampers ever. I watched all the videos I could from all the major crafters and got a wider view of how others craft. I like to watch people from the UK as they definitely have a different way of crafting.

I am a newbie at making cards. My biggest problem has been that my paper trimming tool was not cutting my card bases or my mattes correctly. I would cut them and then place them together and they always looked crooked and out-of-whack.. To fix this issue, I did invest in a better paper trimming tool with a rotary blade - this has made a big difference. Maymay, I just wanted to tell you that you have been and continue to be a major influence in my crafting world. I learn new things everyday - I consider you my go-to crafter!!!!! Embellishing we know can be quite expensive, I've found lots of items can be purchased @ the Dollar Store to get folks started. The fun foam for dimensions, glitter, stickers, dollies and the list goes on and on. That would have been very helpful in the beginning for me luv ; )

Great idea MayMay, I wished I had this tutorial when I started. I just did whatever, but never sent my cards because of there size. I learned by going to the store and buying card blanks and decorating them. I didn't know about this wonderful card .taking internet family then. I've learned so much since then. This is what I would like to do also, teach others about card making. I started my cards with the sentiment and designed from there. Card sizes, layers, tools, stamps, embellishments. Thanks MayMay. I have a lot of paper and glue, and I know it should come together somehow, but I need lessons! I would like to see some instruction on design fundamentals - what is naturally appealing to the eye, something like "the rule of three." I need to know squares and circles and flags and what makes a good design putting these elements together. I would also like instruction on color combinations - complimentary, contrast - and when to use them, or why.
I just started making cards for my first craft fair. I don't have a score board or a paper trimmer, so I decided to buy premade, pre scored card to start with. Hopefully soon I can afford everything soon and be able to build the card from base up, instead of taking "shortcuts". Love your tutorials, and you're not far from where I live.

I've been "card making" for a few years and something like this would've really made my learning curve a lot shorter.
Although I've managed to get a grasp of the basics the one concept I still struggle with is pattern papers. I always thought of myself as someone who understood color, until I tried to use more than one pattern on a card. Most of the videos I've watch talk about using patterns within one pad. Unfortunately I ran amuck in the beginning, buying any pad I could find on sale & usually based on only a couple patterns within that I really liked, DOH ! So now I'm left to struggle with trying to match patterns from different pads.
All that to suggest two videos that a "newbie" might appreciate - one on purchasing paper, and one on matching patterns.

This is wonderful. Just the help anyone who is just starting out will need. I am someone who is learning all on their own and cards have been a bit of a struggle since I always cut and fold on the wrong sides.

I have been in caerdmaking for several years now, I don't do it for a living but I love it, it is my escape, my peaceful and happy place. I don't buy cards anymore, I make my Christmas and special ocassion cards, I have a bunch of bought ones that I rarely use only if something came up and I didn't had the time to work on it, but i am working on having a stash ready to go for that instances too ☺. I had to figure all this out on my own, learning the hard way, watching videos here and there, taking some classes when they were available for the first time on Craftsy (their papercrafting section was so small in the beginning), following crafters like yourself. It is very kind of you to do this series for the new cardmakers MayMay, it will be a lot easier for them to have a place to go, where everything is all together and someone available to answer their questions. Love making cards, what I had a problem with was in layering the card base I felt like my card was top heavy. So I mat the inside as well. Only on the opposite side of my cover. Can't wait to see more!

I'm a newbie at cardmaking. With this video I am making lots of bases to start with. I want to make my mom a box full of cards for Christmas and put it in a decorated cigar box.
You know I'm never disappointed with whatever you present but I have to admit that I could use help with the inside and maybe making a card front (blank - with no sentiments) that I can easily later add the appropriate sentiment when I'm needing a quick card.

What I do do is use immiges from magazines or leaflets that I can get free and make cards or albums from them, I love to recycle as here in Italy designer paper is very expensive and you don't get DT or Michaels, where I am living. Well to wrap up as you say you don't have to spend much to craft. THANK YOU so much.

Great tutorial. I started making cards but really needed to find a basic " how to" as was confused by all the options out there. Now I can start with basic card, measurements, layering and it all makes sense! The Cricut/fancy stamping/embossing etc, will have to wait while I get the basics right! Such fun! Thank you!

My suggestion on the beginning Card making. Is have a good trimmer. So your paper doesn't flare at the end which makes your cards look lopsided. Also when you get into stamping. Be sure not to rock your stamps which cause you to catch an edge. A good shammy or baby wipe works great for cleaning the edges prior to stamping. Last invest in a sand eraser only a few dollars which helps if you accidentally smudge your card with a tiny bit of ink from one of your fingers.
This is excellent for beginners, I am going to share this with a group that I have been working with. I would also like you to share using pattern papers, that is an area they seem to have trouble with.
I would like to see how to make simple borders for the edges of your cards using scissors and scallop scissors. then some tips on punches and how to get mileage out of your punches.
Great idea, so much to teach a intermediate novice, I have learned through CZcams and classes at my local stamp&stuff store. This first lesson was awesome--I have a folder with card templates, now I must make borders for card sizes. Other ideas----tools, adhesives, stamping, die cuts, embellishments. I can go on.
So important to use heavyweight card stock as a base- trust me, you don't want your cards to warp over time! I made that mistake early on. Thanks Maymay!

I make all sizes of cards & so can you, BUT if you plan to mail them, find out what size can be mailed without extra postage due to being outside the standard range. If you don't mind extra postage, then do what you like. You may have to pay extra for weight, but not as often as you may think. Have fun!

I am an experienced card maker, but I think people would want to know about other sizes and what the postage requirements would be for them. We all need these basic videos as reminders because we can forget basic steps in cardmaking! I know 6 X 6 cards are popular, but I tend to not make that size for mailing because of the postage issue. I think new card makers would like to,know about mailing issues too. Love all of your tips!
As a veteran card-maker, I still struggle with using tools like the perfect borders rulers and the stamp-a-ma-jig. I don't know why, I have seen so many tutorials (including yours) that show perfect results each time but mine never turn out that way. A piece of advice for those getting started: do not get carried away with the ancillary items that lines and companies show as being SO awesome and useful. JUST PICK ONE and use it up before buying something else. Otherwise you waste money and space in your house (ie: dry glitter, glitter glue, glitter gel pens, glitter embossing powder and wink of stella all can pretty much do the exact same thing to a card). I would also advise that dry adhesives are the bomb and tombow mono is touted by everyone as being wonderful. However, they never mention that it NEVER fully dries; any Tombow Mono that accidentally seeped out or dropped on your card will remain sticky when your recipient gets it or you pull it out of your folder 2+ years later- TRUST ME.
Hi Maymay, thank you so much for sharing your talent with us. I have been making cards for about 15 years , and I wish someone had told me that it is ok to leave empty space on your cards. For example when I first started I thought that if you could see the card base or mat it was wrong. Every single bit had to be covered with an embellishment of some kind. I was so embarrassed when someone told me they were gaudy. Looking back I am very greatful. My cards aren't perfect. ( I don't do perfect...lol.) But they are made with lots of love.
I love A2 size cards ♥️ but I spend a lot of time picking a good color themes.

I like to put a piece of cardstock cut to 5 1/4 x 4" inside the card unattached. I'll stamp a coordinating image in the bottom corner. I also include a little note to explain why I left it detached. Reason is because I encourage my recipients to forward the card on to someone else. I do this normally with my "Hello" type of cards or a get well card. Something not so personal. I know store bought cards find their way to the landfills so quickly and so often. My goal is to keep it going. My recipients LOVE this. They eagerly await the next card that I send to them.
I think this is GREAT! I wish I would have had this kind of help when I started out. I am teaching others how to make cards - this series will really help me.
The best thing about making cards is that you can most likely use what you already have. Basic scrap booking & paper crafting supplies are really all you need. I've been making cards for over 5 years and I do not have a Cricut. Would I like to have one? Sure, but it's not required to make greeting cards. I'd rather put my money into good quality card-stock and adhesives than in tools. ALSO, I've found having a Pinterest board for color-combination ideas is very helpful.

Great tutorial - I found LOTS of stuff on pinterest, too. I get inspiration from beautiful papers; origami paper is often inexpensive and can easily be glued with a tape runner. I think it's best for beginners to start with the size you mentioned and the "KISS" method - Keep It Simple, Sweetie. My problem comes to how to get the sentiments on, and finding just one or two stamp sets that will fit many occasions. Thanks again!

I am terrified of making cards. I have only made 2 cards. So I am not experienced in any way. I have bought so much stuff to do paper crafting: Scrapbooking, Cards, and watercoloring, I buy beautiful paper pads,, stamps, markers, pens, crayons, inks, brushes, ATG, Tape, glues,foam every way available, stickers, dies, Big Shot Plus, embossing powders, heat gun but I’m afraid to do anything. I watch you ladies craft all day, and night on CZcams🤷🏻♀️. Easter my sister might help me🤷🏻♀️. But, I have done my part to help the economy by help keeping craft stores in business.🤷🏻♀️. I could craft for the rest of my life, and would never need anything. So, I’m looking forward to your instructions, and tips.
I've been making cards for a while now. There's so much that can be discussed. This was a great start! I would recommend any or all of these topics: a complete set of card sizes review, where to get inspiration (beyond Pinterest), basic tools vs advanced tools, a beginners methodology (i.e. Select idea, select paper, sentiment, etc), selling cards, donating cards, how to package and store handmade cards, what's copyrighted and what's not, the color wheel, and most importantly, using what you have in your stash. I am sure I could come up with a greater list but this is a good start. PS. As for inspiration you never know where you'll find it--- I once attended a conference for work and ended up sketching the crown molding of the conference room as it was interesting. If you are stuck for color combos walk down the aisles of the grocery store as major brands pay big bucks for colors in packaging. Ok I'll be quiet now!

I'm a newbie, I watch channels who say that they donate their cards. I would love to do that. I was thinking of taking them to nursing homes for the staff to give to residents. Especially ones that don't have family or friends close by, some don't have anyone.

I found you and art glitter glue but maybe newbies are confused like I was at the beginning. There are so many to choose from. Thanks and keep the videos coming. ❤️
