Two parental methods here. On one hand William sugarcoating if not straight lying to Elizabeth's face. On the other hand, Clara being brashly honest. Yes, instinctively you don't want to upset a kid and avoid any possible tantrums, but sugarcoating won't do good on the long run. I'm not saying to downright trample Elizabeth's confidence, but maybe telling her something like "it's a good start but there's more room for improvement" or "I think this needs a little more exercising". And about the horrid sounds of a beginner in violin, no other choice but sucking it up, sadly. It'll be better soon... hopefully.
