2023 Kia XCeed '3' PHEV Review - Will this Ceed SUCEED ?!

  • This week I drove the brand new Kia XCeed '3' PHEV. The big question is will the new Ceed suceed for Kia. The XCeed accounts for 10% of Kia sales and 50% of all Ceed sales. This new model has sharp styling and now comes in 4 trim levels - 2, 3, GT Line and GT Line S. It has a choice of 2 engines, a 1.5 litre T-GDi petrol with a 6 speed manual and the model on test in this video the 1.6 GDi Plug-In Hybrid with a 6 speed DCT auto.

    Great review. I haven’t tried the PHEV version but I picked up an ex-demo 1.5 petrol XCeed ‘3’ a couple of weeks’ ago and I think it’s a great car. Mine is a 2022 MY and apart from the wheel design it looks just like this 2023 model. I agree that the ride quality is one of its standout features. My weekend car is a F56 MINI Cooper S sport with JCW pack, so that rides very firmly, so when I just want a nice comfortable drive, the XCeed is perfect. Another great feature is the infotainment system. The Kia Connected app is very easy to setup and the inbuilt sat nav works really well - apparently Kia have partnered with Vodafone and their IoT connected car system to constantly keep it updated with traffic info, weather and POIs etc. It’s all free for 7 years (data included). This is my first Kia and I reckon the value for money is really good considering the equipment, quality & warranty.

    • @davidbrowning6777
      @davidbrowning6777 Před 10 měsíci

      @@MG3-Hybrid I’m averaging 42 mpg overall, but that includes quite a few short journeys. On a mixed run of 50/60 mph A roads and a bit of dual carriageway at 70 mph it can get 50 mpg which I reckon is pretty good for a petrol car.

  • @CASFAN
    @CASFAN Před rokem +8

    Good review Pete and I do understand the reasoning behind PHEVs. They do make only limited sense to me though. If you do most of your trips on battery (school, supermarket runs etc.) then you’re carting about a heavy engine, gearbox and tank of fuel when you don’t need to. That’s a heavy parachute! If you do loads of miles, then the small battery probably won’t add a huge amount of range and once again is a heavy thing to cart about, when a good efficient diesel probably does the job better. There’s probably a specific mix of driving where it makes more sense to go PHEV over ICE/BEV, but they aren’t for me. Looks nice enough though and I love Kia as a brand these days. They make some great cars now.

    • @718YellowSubmarine
      @718YellowSubmarine Před rokem +2

      When you do most trips on school, supermarket runs etc with a BEV then you're carting about a (unnecessary) heavy battery. Same thing! IMO, PHEV makes a lot of sense for a great deal of circumstances.

    • @CASFAN
      @CASFAN Před rokem

      @@718YellowSubmarine yes but that’s something you are actually using. To be fair the weight of a Tesla model 3 is around the same as the weight of an equivalent BMW 3 series. If you have a car with an engine and then add batteries (albeit a smaller battery than in a BEV), you are adding in weight over that of a normal engine version of the car.
      If you do the right mix of driving, they can make sense, but if you rarely use the engine or are doing lots of miles then I’d say that they aren’t.

    • @SuperMadpom
      @SuperMadpom Před rokem +3

      @@CASFAN Been Driving a Holden Volt (Aussie and NZ baged Chevy) for last 5 years it makes perfect sense because you can do the vast majority of your journeys Electric only but still have the ability to do longer trips at weekends if you need to and you get to do all that without paying stratospheric BEV prices. If you can do that trip to work and back electric only and plug in every day you'll be laughing. I am - averaged 0.3 litres per100km while i've owned it and car itself has a lifetime consumption of 1.1 litres per 100km over a total of 78,000km. Just have to choose the right tool for the job.

    • @CASFAN
      @CASFAN Před rokem

      @@SuperMadpom true, I currently have an ICE car and have a BEV on order. Will probably keep both for now and use whichever meets my needs the best. I never really do more than the range of the BEV though, so the ICE will just get the odd blast when I fancy playing with a nice manual I guess. 😊

    • @718YellowSubmarine
      @718YellowSubmarine Před rokem +1

      @@CASFAN Actually, you are not using the big heavy battery of a BEV if you mostly do short commutes or so. If you can plug in often enough, a PHEV can make more sense than a BEV for many user profiles. The true issue of the PHEV is that many users can't be bothered to plug it in. But that's another discussion.

  • @MrFatknacker
    @MrFatknacker Před rokem +2

    Good review - daughter has an early Mini Countryman PHEV, so a very limited EV only range, but works for her given her mileage profile is very short local trips, or really long trips - and I don’t think she has the patience for BEV in-journey charging! Anyway, comfortably over 200hp combined output and a solid chassis, so can feel pretty sporty when pushed.

I need a smaller car. The Xceed should be fine as I do a low mileage and will plug in during the cheaper electricity over night. I got a good part EX for the Niro, KIA vehicles do hold their value. Its also nice to be above the lorry wheel spray in the wet.

    Hi my comment below was before I had the car, i have now got the car its great, but I am wading through the 'large' car manual to work out where or how it tells me how much charging I have got. KIA did not provide the 'trickle' charger connection for me to use so I do not know whether the car will show me, The manual says Charging Status, but there are many variations of the Xceed mine might not include this. Any help or advice will be good. Regards John Turner
