LIVING WITH A TOYOTA V8 POWERED DEFENDER 130

  • Pugly the halfbreed Defender 130 is powered by a sacrilege Lexus (Toyota) V8 engine.
    Did this conversion improve the vehicle or is this now a ruined Defender 130?
    We'll let's roll that film to see why I chose a Defender 130 and why this particular engine setup.

    Love it, you’ve obviously thought about it in great detail and that shows in the end product. So many conversions aren’t done with reliability and longevity in mind. That’s much harder than dropping an big lump in a vehicle and hoping for the best. Nice work.

    Its a great car Hendri, and you heavily influenced my current project - a nut and bolt rebuild of a 110 v8 - but using a re-manufactured 4.8 litre with a GEMs setup, similar to that found in the Range Rover p38. As you say, keeping the engine choice to a relatively factory configuration offers benefits when off grid.
    Keep the videos coming please, I need them to keep me motivated to keep working on mine, still a long way to go.

No major issues in 6.5years of lexus ownership, bar annual service and general maintenance items; radiator, waterpump, thermostat housing, etc. It is my daily drive to work, in town consumption is 5-5.5, open road heavy laden with big ORT and 6 people, 6.5-7 at 100-110, and unladen to Oudshoorn and back, (800kms), 8.6km/l at 100! If you push it hard, consumption drops, but wouldn't trade it! PS Would love to meet up and join in a day's fun somewhere in WC.

    Seems like a good setup for your use and sounds great, I'll stick to my 200Tdi though for low speed off road and messing around in water. I'd recommend putting a cage on that before you roll it on a dune and the cab gets flattened by under the weight. Personally wouldn't touch a Td5, my D2 that I recently sold was a V8 and if the 200Tdi ever needs replacing I quite like the idea of an old 4BT Cummins, maybe a 6BT but they're heavy.

    • @HendriMouton
      @HendriMouton  Před 3 lety +2

      The safety concern has definitively kept me from trying some silly things in this Defender, maybe for the best. I'm quite a big fan of the 6BT but fear it will be a bit much for any stock parts on the Defenders.

      I have since gone the turbo diesel route. You can see the video on my channel of the LC80 introduction. It just made more economical sense for me as a tourer and occasional towing vehicle. It's all down to personal preference really, but I do love a big diesel with an auto

  • @Omgiamsotriggered
    @Omgiamsotriggered Před rokem

    Its not a sacrilege at all, I always found defenders to be heavily underpowered for my taste, especially if youre building an offroad all-in-one camper. I saw some company that swaps engines, my personal choice would be the 2.8 4 cylinder diesel cummins with 160 hp and around 400 nm (290 lb).This also mostly varries where u are from, for Europe, where im currently at, a BMW engine swap is also not bad. I think you still made an awesome choice, its your car at the end of the day and everyone makes their own personal project. Defenders are cult cars but then again so are Toyota's bulletproof engines. Best of both worlds!

  • @lyndoncruickshank7111

    • @HendriMouton
      @HendriMouton  Před rokem

      Honestly I would suggest sticking with the stock R380 gearbox as your gearing is much better suited with the Defender TC already and less work required. • @HendriMouton
      @HendriMouton  Před 3 lety

      Make no mistake a proper setup 3UZ Lexus V8 swap is not cheap and the fuel will not match a diesel engine. If I could do it again I would go for the M57 BMW 3.0d (for all round use) which has become very popular recently. I even bought a donor 330d 150kw for this swap but end up selling Pugly due to the work and costs involved to move back to diesel again. I would rather start with a TD5 platform like yours.

    1HD-FT from Toyota.
    The last great simple engine but with 24 valves, straight six, diesel glory.
    Or the 4BD1 from Isuzu, 3.9, all mechanical 4 cylinder diesel. The Australian army had them in their Defenders so it is a Land Rover engine.

      Hendri Mouton their are a few people doing this, but I think this is where Ineos made the perfect call for the Grenadier drive train.
