Wreckfest: The Excellent Switch Port vs Xbox One/ One X/ PS4/ Pro + PS5 and Xbox Series S/X!

- Wreckfest is an exceptionally good 'destruction derby' style game. It's impressive enough on last-gen consoles - and it's remarkable how close the new Switch version gets to matching that experience. In this video, Oliver Mackenzie not only delivers an in-depth tech review on the Switch rendition, but also checks out the experience on every other console: Xbox One S, PS4, PS4 Pro, Xbox One X, Xbox Series S, Xbox Series X - and of course, PS5. It's all here.

Some fun Wreckfest facts:
- Suspensions are fully simulated
- The ROMU engine does calculate tire temperature, but it's not implemented in game for anything
- Armor does not add weight to the specific area you add it to (putting a 160kg bumper on the front does not weigh the front down, for example) - all additional weight is added as center of gravity mass
- Armor doesn't actually make a specific area stronger, it just re-enforces the deformation sphere for the vehicle and adds weight for impact against other vehicles.
- A fully armored Roadcutter can full speed corner-bomb (straight on t-bone in a corner into the outside wall) another vehicle and take nearly no damage
- Walls, particularly cement ones, are sticky to prevent wall riding abuse to set lap times.
Thats surprisely interesting, how do you know about that?
@@HoroJoga spend a lot of time playing and in discord chat with a group of guys that do modding for the Steam Workshop for this game.
@@envirovore oh nice!

- Walls, particularly cement ones, are sticky to prevent wall riding abuse to set lap times.
OH! That's why! It's so annoying when grind against a wall and suddenly stick and lose momentum.
Huge fan of the game, the destruction and deformation of the vehicles is visceral and immensely satisfying. There is no other racer around with a better damage system. You can even tweak it with multiple damage modes. On PS5 the performance is excellent and there are still numerous updates being done on the game. Easy recommendation for every fan of car mayhem.
Agreed. T-boning a car at high speed and seeing them rollover is one of the most satisfying experiences in a racing game.
There is one, it's in early access though. Forgot the name :D
I think it's something like NG Beam
Yea my favorite racer. The AI is amazingly realistic too , very under appreciated
You should definitely take a look at Beamng drive. It's more of a sandbox focus instead of multiplayer (which you need to mod) but it's physics and damage system arguably outclasses even wreckfest, you might enjoy it.
How did I miss this game?! I loved playing Destruction Derby on the PSX way back in the day. Wreckfest is right up my alley.
That's actually why I even got this game. This game far surpassed my expectations. It's constantly supported, plenty of online races that feel as good as single player, and WAYYYYY better physics than you could imagine. Seriously, as a DD fan, just send it.
Trucks vs rideable lawn mowers.
You also missed their previous games: the Flatout series, it's similar to Wreckfest, but there also are minigames where you can launch your driver to hit various targets.
Game is fantastic. If you get it for PS5, you’ll also get great Dualsense usage.
@@mikem2253 it also feels pure on a force feedback wheel, for those interested in that too. That's how I play it most of the time. Feels closer to a sim than anything like Forza or GT.
A real gem this game. The driving physics are authentic feeling and fun. You can have real intense close races, and the game handles it well since it really has collisions in mind. Top work from the devs and it makes me happy to see as a OG fan of the Flatout series
Agreed, it's an excellent racer with just right physics which feel like a perfect balance of realism and arcade. Just wish there was a mod to give us the old school Flatout driver ejection!
@@bliglum That would be awesome!
I believe FlatOut needs to be reborn. idc what companny, but as long as a company that has good intentions (cough flatout 3) can actually try to compete with bugbears wreckfest, we would all have better games and make a bigger puish between these 2 iconic IPS. Flatout devs would have to overtake wreckfest and wreckfest would have to over take flatout, by making newer games and pushing for that better game. the fact wreckfest got mainly no compettitors is literally like rockstar game's gta 5.
@@alexig1025 they did a flatout 4 in 2017 but it flopped
I've been hopelessly addicted to playing this online on PC for the last 2 years. So much hilarious chaotic fun.

Catch you in game sometime, probably literally.
Wreckfest offline has racing of an open forza lobby with without the racial slurs.
Reminds me of when they ported Flatout 2 to the PSP. Would love a DF Retro on Flatout!
I think I still have those demos... pretty impressive, sadly I never sunk the cash into those ports I have it on PC.
Flatout 2 is the best race game ever
It is really amazing to see how develapers take a full potential of the switch and create something amazing out of it
Agreed. Nothing blew my mind more than Alien Isolation! That game is drop-dead gorgeous on the Switch
These wide shots make the wreckage look so much alive, with all the debris flying around. Bugbear really put all their love into this game.
This game has all the same feelings as the old MX v ATV and Tony Hawk games. Obviously they’re all very different games, but the soundtrack, emphasis on fun, and allowance for actual technique is very similar. I love it.
this is the reason why I enjoy fall guys so much even tho its a "shit cell phone game" it puts having fun first and formost and all my friends love it and I hope wreckfest is the same cause im tired of games where I gotta be soooo good to beat it, I just wanna go back to having fun with friends
@@nick13b "im tired of games where I gotta be soooo good to beat it, I just wanna go back to having fun with friends"
Same.
Glad to see you finally fulfilled my request to cover the next-gen upgrades for this game from a year ago. 😄
I backed this game way back when it was just an open test level with some spinning objects and crushers called Next Car Game and I still play it today. Very very good game, as long as the gameplay and feel translates I think the visual downgrades would be offset just fine.
One S looking pretty good next to a Switch! That thing still has its place almost 10 years later.
This makes me want a DF video on best 3rd party Switch ports (Top 10 maybe?), as you mentioned Sniper Elite, or others like Doom, Dragon Quest, Warframe, etc.
After 5 years, it'd be interesting to see what techniques worked to make these successful compared to others that fell short.
Would love this video, as you mention, there is quite a number of good ports to switch - Witcher, sniper Elite, now wreckfest and so on
I’ve not heard about this game until today. It looks great! Definitely getting it now
It's a great one, wrecking racing action!
Also, for the most physically accurate crash simulation, check out BeamNG Drive!
@@bliglum stop spamming about some other game and let people enjoy things, child.
Are you all blind? It looks like a PS3 game and it doesn't even run at 60 on PS4.
This game is a technical joke, though it looks fun.
@@efuuu I would take this games’s fun with rough edges over the other AAA games polished, but bland gameplay.
How? It is basically the best racing game in recent years!
A brilliant game finally starting to get at least some recognition.
I bought this game the day of release and was talking about it to my friends.
They had no idea what I was talking about.
I'm happy this game ended up being popular.
Game was on ps+ last year. Had a lot on fun with it.
Game had anti aliasing issues in the ps5 version as well but it was patches shortly after the regular release.
Visually it’s not the most beautiful game but it looks good. Some of the lightning is ok, car models looking great with all of their damage.
Fantastic game! Highly recommended.
Great review Oliver. You’re extremely professional and clinical in your approach, I think you’re an excellent addition to the DF staff. Keep up the great work!
Unfortunately, his lisp makes him hard to listen to. At least for myself, and I'm sure I'm not alone.
I just wish he’d go a bit more in-depth like Alex and John tend to do. Both the videos by Thomas and Oliver seem mostly superficial are definitely a notch below the other content on the channel.
@@ScyrousFX I think he is not on par as John and Alex in terms of technical analysis. But of course everyone starts at some point hopefully he can catch up to others in terms level of proficiency. Plus I think he is in just evaluation period from Richard.
@@MysteryD You're right.

@@Rebelscum264 Not at all. I am actually excited and psyched to see him grow and get better. He is proving to be a great addition to the DF team and that means more killer content to check out.
They better fix the framerate on the Series X soon, it's more powerful than the PS5 yet still struggling more in this game for some reason, seems less optimized.
Would be great to see some other impressive Switch ports covered, i.e. Snowrunner or World War Z
World War Z!

@@ramonandrajo6348 i'm not the one commenting about Steam Deck under every comment like an insecure child lmao
I just posted something similar. Would be nice to see the similarities in what was successful or where others failed. Was it using their own engine? Was it in-house studios working on their own games? Maybe it was just a competent budget & dev team given access to more time?
Games like Doom, Warframe, MK 11, Sniper Elite, Crash Trilogy, etc. all did many things well. Even Wticher 3 with all its cutbacks was something of a miracle to work so well at all.
@@ramonandrajo6348 compromise is essential for the survival of mankind
with destruction derby 2 being one of my fav games on ps1, which imo still holds up today, wreckfest immediately had my attention back then. i'm glad thanks to the switch-port even more players are able to enjoy it.
ps: imo racing games like dd/wreckfest are much more fun than gran turismo & co, where collisions don't really matter.
This game looks really fun! I remember a short but glorious stint back in the 1990s playing Destruction Derby on PS1. This feels like that, but way powered up!
Happy to see this game getting covered by DF. It's one of the best arcade racers out there and deserves more attention.
Great breakdown once again, i havent played wreckfest but ill definetly take a look now.
Runs brilliantly on Steam Deck too!
right they should be always including steam deck as well into these
The lack of splitscreen is still a massive oversight.
Yes, split screen will be awesome
A well deserved game getting some welcome recognition. 1 of my favorite games ever. Loved the soft mod damage system, the chaos that ensues with the AI and in multiplayer, the realistic driving style, and the vehicles, which includes some absolutely ridiculous ones, which are fun to race. Taking about you couch, outhouse, and lawn mower (which is raced in reality too), just to name a few
holy shit, 8 different versions in one video, well done olliver!
this my most fun racing game ever.
such an underrated gem
The game went to the next level for me as soon as I switched handling and destruction modes to the more hard ones. I believe they should've been selected by default. Races immediately became much more thrilling to me and challenge more interesting. It was like playing a different game.
Worth noting, this game also has really responsive adaptive trigger feedback on PS5.
I remember when the series X upgrade launched and the bad reviews put me off. Can't believe they haven't fixed it yet. Given it's a paid upgrade I figured would be motivation enough.
Really impressed by how well the switch version holds up though.
The 60fps upgrade is free and automatically enabled. Only the added graphics are paid and kill the performance.
12 Tf are not fully unlocked in the game. Devs need the final tools after the e3.

My biggest issue with Switch racing games is that all its controller's use digital triggers; no throttle control.
Just started playing it on Switch and yeah.. one of the better recent ports and among the most fun games in the racing genre.
Absolutely fantastic game this, one of my favourite racing games of the last few years for sure! Loved the Carmageddon add-on
Surprised by the Switch version here. I hope you guys do a video on "Gas Guzzlers Extreme" next. Loved that game on PC, would love to have it portable, but all the screenshots on the eShop are promotional renders. That's also a proprietary engine, I believe, and judging by other CZcams videos, the game seems like it might be targeting 60fps on the Switch, which is wild.
fantastic game. constant updates, great fun, solid handling and brutal destruction!
Great Review ! Hopefully we'll have a tech analysis for Portal Companion on Switch, that would be great
Not sure if it was mentioned in the video, but current-gen also has a player-count increase. Love this game.
The level of destruction is amazing !!
This game should be called fun fest race!
Wreckfest is an excellent game. Played it through to 1000/1000 achievements on PC. I love Bugbear’s work. Hyvä Suomi!
Fascinating Switch port. Especially with all those I would have loved to see that big centre-track all-car obliteration scene on switch.
I have it for Xbox and Switch. I’m very impressed how it runs on Switch. They did an outstanding job with the port.
@@ramonandrajo6348 nobody cares
@@ramonandrajo6348 Wow would’ve thought that the more powerful system would run better
Current gen also increased the number of cars and added terrain deformation.
Never even heard of this game but it looks great. I’ll have to pick it up
So many cool Steam Workshop mods. Been playing old Need for Speed and San Francisco Rush tracks
good case study for why checkerboard rendering needs TAA to work properly
I thought the PS4 could manage the CB AA on it's own on a system level? Probably just wasn't implemented properly here. Unfortunate, but I'll probably just get this for PS5.
For One X is there any advantage to running 1080p mode over 4k mode? If locked 30fps for both why even have 1080p mode?
Yall know that this is released on android? All settings maxed, 1440p at 60hz, not always smooth gameplay on my Samsung S9 Ultra tablet. Using ps4 controller to play it on my OLED TV.
Its a beautiful thing.
The tablet shares the Cpu/gpu of most flagship smartphones. Thats an awesome fact. Anyone can play this on their pocketphone now. How sick is that?
I wish the gameplay was much more arcade-y, or had an option for that. I don't like adjusting the handling on my cars manually and having the heavy/weighty feeling of a sim racer. I liked FlatOut because it felt like Need for Speed but with cool destruction physics.
Loading time comparisons would have been interesting since the horrendous loading times on PS4 were the main reason why I ditched that game.
Great game been free on playstation multiple months. Was one of the fun to play games along with oddsworld soulstron I got for free on ps5
Game is added on my wishlist. It looks great!
Smashy smash cars goes smashing.
I can't believe I've never heard of his game! Just picked it up for around ten bucks. Can't wait to jump in
I found the audio to be a bit muted in this video. I struggled to hear/understand Olie on my 2.1 sound system. Didn't try it on headphones to be fair... but thought you might want some feedback.
Wreckfest is legit as fun as Flat Out 2 and thats wicked awesome, all it needed was the ragdoll games : P
I really hope for a wreckfest 2 some day.
FUN game and even better with the $10.00 next-gen update!

I keep hearing "breakfast" for some reason ^^;
Love Wreckfest, the kind of game that is too rare these days.
last bugbear's game i played is glimmerati.
the physics is amazing considering it is released for n-gage.
If they decided to make the resolution 4k on Series X then maybe resolution isn't the bottlekneck, going off the last gen PRO and X consoles they aren't strangers to having different resolutions on competing platforms.
Does the next-gen upgrade increase the maximum number of players/bots in multiplayer?
Yes, player count online increased from 16 to 24.
Looks like a solid port. I hope to see DF throw in Steam Deck to some of these comparisons, specifically versus the Switch. Portal 1/2 would be a good starting point. 🤔
i have this on xbox. But I would happily add it to my switch collection if a physical version is released.
It is on physical
@@robnorish6515 well I'll be buying it then, lol.
You should cover SnowRunner on the Switch, i think that it's pretty impressive.
Wreckfest in on PS Plus Extra, gonna try it. Looks cool
Extremely fun with a Logitech g923 wheel (on PS5) 😁 some of my favourite arcade-style handling I've tried yet! Great feedback too!
This switch port still looks great in comparison. You can't go wrong really
I may be wrong but the Series S/X version seems a bit odd - I think it's a "back compat plus" type release running Xbox One code with some Series X enhancements rather than a full native Series X port. If you got in to "file info" on Wreckfest it'll show as "Durango" rather than "Scarlett". Weirdly the next gen version was sold as DLC rather than a seperate install like most titles and requires you to install the original approx 20GB game and then another 20GB next gen DLC.. it's almost like you're installing the game twice.. I do think if they released an actual native Series X version it could reduce the file size and probably sort the performance glitches.. would be interesting to hear thoughts on this...
When I installed the Xbox X series upgrade the framerate dipped. I made sure it wasn't installing to my rusty platters (4GB ext drive), and it wasn't.
After several races where it would obviously dip, I uninstalled the series X version and 4K + buttery smoothness returned, but it messed up my saves. A small sacrifice for 60fps once again.
There is not an X/S symbol on the game so no its still a Xbox one BC title
@@deadflexxx do you not see the x/s symbol even with the upgrade install?
The X/S symbol is a little misleading from what I've seen - some games with it are actual native Series X/S titles, others (the assassin's creed games prior to Valhalla and various others) are still Xbox one code based but with some settings tweaked to make use of the Series S/X hardware - the back compat plus type releases.
You can tell by going into the game install info from my games and apps and then select "file info" - if it's native Series s/x it'll say Scarlett in there. If not, it'll say Durango - back compat plus titles will usually also say something like "gen9aware".
Wreckfest seems to fall into the latter camp so it's unclear what the next gen dlc does. I'm guessing it's essentially a big texture pack so the game has resolution and frame rate set to 4k/60 when running on series X then if you install the next gen pack it also installs some graphics/texture upgrades which cause the performance hits in places but that's just a guess.. I wish they'd scrap this method and do a native Series X version.. seems to be what they did for Ps5 so seems odd they've gone this route on Xbox. Guess maybe they thought it'd be less work and give similar benefits just using the extra hardware oomph with the Xbox one code...
Such a great game, nothing comes close to this :)
Seems like the Series console versions weren't finished rather than them being tapped out. It wouldn't be the first time.
Kinda funny that XSX struggles with simple racing game to hit 4K60
Super underrated game.
I only found this game today guess im living under a rock.🤔

This game is so great, I just wish it had some split screen multiplayer. That's its biggest weakness to my eyes. And wow that looks great for a game on switch !

I sleep on it and just download it because CZcams thinks I'll need it
side note, havent seen Tom Morgan in a while, is he alright?
These kind of comparisons could also add Steam Deck, AyaNeo's and other portable consoles rather than just traditional home consoles...
Fan of the game when it came out.
But it had eternal loading times between races. I did not play since then.
Are loading times on Xbox One X/ Series X ok now?
Long loading times on One X, much much quicker on Series X.
I wish they add 2-4 players split screen
