Absolutely been loving the pond build guys. From my experience of having ducks. They will not go back into the coop unless you run them in there yourself every night. Plus ducks will not climb ramps. They are ground nesters. They don't roost or go to boxes like chickens. Your best bet will be to add a large house or cover on the island. Have it about 1-2ft high. Enough to just get under it. The hawks won't go under it. It being out on the island will keep ground predators from getting to them and the babies. This is all from self experience of owning ducks for years.

Love the duck house when I heard you mention how much your daughter wanted pet ducks I almost started to cry. I grew up rurally and it seemed like everyone wanted to have pet ducks but did little to protect them. Ducks are not only a delicacy to humans it seems but almost every other living critter. Our Siberian Husky unfortunately liked them a little to much as well. Awesome job on giving them at least a fighting chance at survival.

Drake's typically like to have several ducks (hens) for mating. Plus that duck would probably enjoy having other ducks so that it gets a break from the drake. They are very, very "productive" birds. 😂

Hello, have really enjoyed watching the 5 AC pond build. If you want to keep the ducks safe you are going need to get them to come back to the house you provided once they are allowed access to the pond. My suggestion would condition them to a food they can't resist, like crickets, mealworms, etc. Only feed that in the house. To condition. Use a clicker (metal cricket) to alert them to the treat. Once conditioned they will come running for the treat.

  • @garymurt9112

Ducks do not roost... they will also have a hard time with that ramp depending on what breed of ducks you get. A good ratio to keep is at least 5 females to 1 male. They need to have water access inside the coop if they have food. Ducks have to dip their entire bills to clean their nostrils. You will need to leave them locked in the coop the first few weeks so they know where home is too.

The pond is looking AWESOME! Duck names. Drake - Doc Holiday. Hen - Big-nosed Kate, Doc and Kate, for short. The 'ground' wire is an excellent addition to the duck coop. To further prevent my dogs digging out of the backyard, I use cheap hook shaped aluminum/steel tent stakes to really anchor the wire to the ground. This gives the grass time to grow over and thru the wire. A hungry fox. bobcat or raccoon can get pretty smart!

It's been so fun following the progress of this project! Can't wait to see it done with bass swimming around. My problem is... I'd want to fish in it all the time, but then I'd start to feel bad for catching all my "pet" bass!

The roosts won’t be used by any water fowl. They will sleep on the ground or the floor of the coop. That’s a super cool coop, I wish I could afford one!

Build one, you can do it for less than a third of the cost. And you are correct about the ducks. That is a chicken coop, not a duck coop. They might learn to walk up into the loft but Mallards will not roost on the perches.

That drake will wear out that hen. I'm curious to see how that auto feeder works out. Our ducks food seems to get hard after they go back and forth from the water to the food. Also make sure they have that water bowl the chicken waterer is not adequate. They prbbly won't roost none of ours do. If you get some muscovys they will roost.

We need to get starlink satellite hooked up on this place with some solar panels connected to it and batteries assuming this is secluded and there is no power lines or Internet. Once that's done we should start a live cam that us users can take turns controling remotely that runs 24/7. Could even hook up a live cam for underwater places like Bonnie and Clyde. 😁

For the duck door! Play a audible noise like a horn or bell.
Then put the ducks in the house. Do this a few times and the ducks will go back and be safe and the door can close 10mins after the bell.
Look up what zoos do. Disney's animal park has a fascinating of doing this. All the animals have a unique noise to tell them to go inside.
