I LIKED HOW HE LOWKEY SNEAKED IN SPONSERSHIP ADVERTISEMENT LOL !!!
Maintenance is key. Don't thrash the vehicle with excessive tuning or reckless driving. Use the best engine oil to be sure.
Good point!
Yeah, I learnt that the hard way with my first 3 or 4 cars. Now I just drive responsibly, maintain my vehicles properly and they are as good as the day I bought them, if not better.
Yeha theres a difference between spirited driving and reckless driving. Make sure your oil is warm and coolant is good
Sometimes it is not the best oil to be the best for your car. It can be you need a lower quality/cheaper oil for your car, depending on what the manufacturer tells you to use.
On a new car, I do the first oil and filter change at 1 K miles, then at every 5 K interval or once a year, whichever comes first. Other fluids, I base replacements on the owner’s manual or a little earlier. My cars all reach 300 K miles without any major problems.
Changing oil at 1k doesn't do anything on a new car. Back before synthetic that helped, but with today's oil and filters it is not necessary.
@@TheRealCatofhes talking about changing the car when he first bought it, when breaking in the engine. thats where most of the wear and tear happens
@@mojakhaha I know, it won't do anything. On modern cars it doesn't really make sense to change the oil before 5k miles
@@TheRealCatofwhats ur highest mileage on a car
@@lmr9512 685,000 on my previously owned 2001 Kia Sorento
Nice BMW. I change mine every 5k. It’s cheap enough and feels satisfying
Yes I agree with frequently changing your fluids and filters, i changed the full synthetic oil every 10K miles and I got 237K miles out of my 2013 Toyota Highlander before I sold her. But also never serviced my transmission and when I went to inquire about changing the fluid, nobody wanted to touch it due to the high mileage and lack of maintenance. Very good video with very detailed information. 👍🏾
You are much better off changing transmission fluid regularly from new. Sadly if you leave if for 200 k then don’t change it as you may well dissolve crud which is blocking leaks.
Fuel filter , serpentine belt and pulleys , battery , wiper blades , cabin air filter. Little things that still add up in the long run of keeping the vehicle in working order. Let’s also not forget to keep the vehicle clean of dirt and grim from the roads that rusts a vehicle away.
Absolutely true about the rust. I bought a 95 pickup a couple years ago. 116k on the odometer and so much rust it will need to be restored.
Yep. Have a 2021 Subaru Impreza Hatch. Have 38,000 miles. Will change CVT transmisson fluid at 50,000. Don"t care what book says, not lifetime fluid. Alreadt changed differential fluids. Oil change every 5,000 miles. No advice. This is just me.
Yeah, not lifetime, bought my Outback at 64k miles, at 70k right now, changing the fluid next week and then every 40k just to be safe, Subaru Master Techs suggest at least every 60k
another important one you miss is washing your car, especially in the winter if you live in an area that salts the roads. Its not so much about keeping the car clean as it is not letting the salt crud build up all winter and waiting until the spring to wash it. I see it every year on the first nice day in spring. Scores of people taking their car for the first wash in months. I bring mine through the touchless wash with undercarriage (important) pretty much every weekend in winter. Sure I might spend a couple hundred dollars in washes but if it buys you another few years with the car before its too rusty to be safe then its a worthwile investment. During the summer you can take it to a regular self serve wash less frequently and for cheaper.
Well in my family we (my mom, me and my sister) had a Fiat Stilo 1.9 JTD 115 horsepower, bought with 40k km, chip tunned to 145 horsepower at around 100k km, we changed oil at 15k km, my mom was the owner, she sometimes forgot when was the last time she changed oil, so a few times she changed it at 30k km, other fluids... probably nobody knows, and a car ran strong till 370k km. I drove it as a teenager often quite hard, she was driving short distances to work, at weekends there were longer distances. Overall the car didn't drink oil, didn't leak, turbo was original, nothing wrong mechanically, we changed it because electric components were starting to fail more often. It was 17 years old.
Shari, you bring a wealth of information to your subscribers. I appreciate it, Thanks !
No problem!
This is awesome, I mean an Independent (as opposed to a manufacturer or dealer) and trusted source providing advising on what car maintenance items needs to be considered and when.
Number one recommendation. Learn how to do your own work. I just did a timing job on my 07 Mustang GT. Cost me $700 in parts. New VCT solenoids, cam phasers, new chain, new tensioners, guides, gaskets, new front main seal, went ahead and put a new oil pump in while i had the timing cover off as well.. The guides had broken off and were causing problems and the VCT solenoids were sticking and causing misfires. It's running great now, though, with 160k miles on the clock.
This would have cost thousands at a shop.
Well, meanwile in Germany/Europe: We have long life oil intervals (usually 15-30k km/10-20k miles or 1-2 years depending on usage calculated by the car) since around year 2000 and it works out quite well without destroyed engines all over the place... Damaged engines usually are not oil related, but also those are rare... My personal vehicle is at 220.000 km and counting with oil changes between 25k and 30k km uses consistantly about 1 liter oil (max to min on the dipstick) in about 22k km, so I refill about 300 ml between oil changes. The engine and the car is in very good condition. But the same engine (e.g. Opel/GM/Buick) can have a 25k or 30k km interval in europe and a 10k km interval in US, so I don't think there is a real rational for those short intervals other than the oil-change lobby in US... Also in semi trucks, the oil change interval can be as high as 150.000 km in europe and it works like the engineers thought it should... Coming from an engineer...
fully agreed, missing corrosion protection, kills most of the cars here in Germany dueto salty roads
Vow! The manufacturer cares only about the vehicle surviving the warranty period!!! Never thought about that one!!! Bravo.
Great video! Thank you!
Great advise, I follow that advise on all my fluids. Changed before factory required!! Cheap insurance, especially engine oil changes.
I change the oil & filter every 4K miles with Mobile 1 full synthetic.
I also change the front and rear differential, transfer case, and a transmission flush every 30K miles.
We keep our vehicles a very long time.
Our Camry was 18 years old when it needed to be replaced, so I bought my wife an Outback. Our other 2 vehicles will soon be 12 years old and as long as they stay reliable, we’ll continue to drive them.
Our 11 Rav 4WD Limited with a 3.5 V6 only has 105K pampered miles and our 11 Ford Ranger XLT super cab 4X4, with a 4.0 V6 only has 35K miles.
Sounds like they have been pampered to me. You should see what those Rangers are going for now. A nice one like yours would command a nice premium.
@@carhelpcorner I’ve been offered $25K from 1 guy and $28K from another one.
If someone will give me $30K I’ll sell it and sell my Rav 4WD Limited with the 3.5 V6 and be able to pay cash for a new Tundra 4X4

Thank you so much!
Another great topic choice dude!! ✅ 😊
I drive a 33 year old Wartburg 1.3 (made in former Eastern German) I change the oil every 6 months. Gearbox oil every 2 years and the cooling fluid every year if looking dirty. Brake fluid every 3 years.
Ur pretty good man! Looking forward to more videos
Im learning english with your videos. Great advices!. The transmision oil sometimes say the dealer than dont have to be changed because in car lifetime. I have a jetta. It look amazing
Hi Shari, it would be great if you would consider adding take home points or a summary of key points at the end of your talk.
Thank you. Very useful
Thanks for your help. You are now a legend to one more person. I'm sure your video will help so many more people.

GOOD REPORT , for new carpeoples !!!!

My mechanic is very biased! He is biased to my needs! He says, "Nothing lasts forever, just keep all the fluids correct".
I'm not ASE certified but heat kills engines early. Paying attention to the temperature is crucial. If you notice it creeping upwards over time it can be an indicator of a failed component.
Also, inspect where you park for puddles or drips. There are no fluids in a car that should drip. You may get condensation from the AC or exhaust. But that is just water and will dry up.
Thank you Shari, this is so useful ❤❤❤❤❤
No problem!
thanks for the car advice, shari!
Thank you brother
Hi Shari, unfortunately the crooked dealers and in cohorts with manufacturers to push long interval oil changes. My personal opinion, is do your oil changes every 5,000 kms or every 3 months. Cost of oil changes are far cheaper than engine replacements. Especially now days engines are so complex with GDI and Turbos.
Love this video Shari, you hit all the important points on automatic transmission fluid, brake fluid and coolant.
If I may add, replace the battery every 5 years regardless if it is still good. You will save your alternator by replacing battery every 5 years.
Realistically every 3.5 to 4 years for battery change to be safer
5000km or 3 months is usually a bit excessive when using synthetic oil on modern engines. I've seen enough oil lab analysis results to feel confident that quality synthetic oil has no problem protecting the engine for at least 8,000km. For mineral oil yes you should do it more often. Otherwise might as well save some money and save some good oil going to waste.
@@carhelpcorner I learnt a lot from this CZcams video below. I made mistakes for 3 decades and have changed my heart after this video:-
TOYOTA OWNERS! Please NEVER Do THIS to Your Toyota - by The Car Care Nut
I think a good habit is to check the oil stick every week or two. If it starts to run low or it goes dark brown, just change it. (Assuming it's not just sitting unused for long periods of course) I have a NA sports car, and because it doesn't have a turbo it won't burn oil as quickly as a turbo one, but it also won't last as long as a regular commuter because I drive it harder (and it's a boxer engine lol). Yeah it's always better to change it early rather than late, but if it looks clean you don't have to worry too much. Just don't check it after you've turned on the engine or finished using it; when oil flows it wil throw off the actual amount on the oil pan. Thought I was running low one time not realizing this, but you should do it while it's cold after an hour or so. Performance cars with very high-compression engines or bigger turbos/superchagers and especially a lot of HP should be maintained a lot more often.
I have a 2018 honda Civic Touring the only problem it had is the ac condenser failed but honda has a 10 year warranty on it and replaced it for free. So far the closest to a problem free car there is. No vehicle is problem free and i always do oil changes every 8000-9000 km
Just so you know, you'll probably need to change it again. They replace it but they still haven't figured out why it breaks. I'm on my 2nd one now, failed at 35,000 km and again at 55,000km, both covered under warranty, but still a pain.
Every 6K miles or 6 months Mobil 1 full synthetic in my 1997 Mazda MX-5 Miata (175K miles) and 2002 Honda CR-V (224K miles).
Also dont forget to change air and cabin filters on time. Dust can increase engine wear dramatically.
Cabin air filters do nothing for engine performance
I do seem to manage this quite well but one thing I learned many years ago was sometimes everything can work fine but your battery still dies every few days which means the problem can be quite elusive and it would cost more to fix than the car is worth.
Hi Shari, this was a great video, and congratulations on your channel. I was wondering about PHEV vehicles. If the range is, say 40 km and you rarely, if ever you beyond that, are you damaging the hybrid engine by not using it enough?
No, but if you don't put miles on your engine, you should still be doing fluid changes on a time interval instead of on a mileage one. For example, do oil every 6 months even if you don't reach 5,000 miles.
Proper Maintenance AND driving gently till engine and transmission are both fully warmed up will ensure long life of power trains.
Here in Brazil one of several conditions that we have is mineral mine areas, because the air on this areas are contain peaces of iron mineral and that damage the engine.
Nevermind, your lungs 😢. Unless everyone wears a mask in these areas, with they probably don’t. Stay safe, eh!

5k oil change if you're on mineral oil. Otherwise that's just wasteful. Synthetics can go on even for 10k-15k miles. Just open and check it with the dipstick.
Timing chain also can get worn and stretched out, causing improper time-keeping which variable valve timing can no longer cope. Good to have it replaced as the vehicle aged.
hmm, on my GTI i had to have that changed at 190K but my civic is still original at 280. The dealer said i dont have to change it.
Proper maintence of oil and fluid, my xtrail 2007 model until now I only change tire fan belt gps android and wiper blade.
Should I be using summer windshield fluid? I use antifreeze fluid year round
HELPFUL
I love NGK IRIDIUM Spark Plugs on my wranglers
I'm planning to do oil change every 7000-800km, as I got an old car with an aluminium alloy block engine, famous for being thirsty for oil - seems fine for 1700-2000km after each oil change, but then oil level starts dropping (somewhere between 170-300ml of oil per every 1000km).
And I intend to change transmission fluid every 40'000km, just to be safe, after all, it's not that expensive. Yes, in service they did say the same - 50-60k is fine, but the issue is - previous owner left it somewhat neglected, nobody knows it transmission fluid has been changed before at all, thus I sort of need to compensate it, to "flush" it so to speak. I mean a couple of hundred Euros or less every 4-5 years isn't a lot, especially compared to 1000-2000 Euros for fixing or getting a replacement gearbox (belt replacement kit for that CVT alone costs around 650 Euros).
Great info! I need a chart lol! Do you recommend going by milage or time for oil change. My previous cars I always went by time, every 6 mos. This year traded in my 2008 for a hybrid so unsure with maintenance.
5,000 miles or 6 months (whichever comes first) is a safe interval for most cars under normal or severe driving conditions.
@@carhelpcorner thanks 🙏. I booked my first service and told them I wanted an oil change included. They tried to tell me I didn’t need it since my mileage is 4000km. But it’s 6 mos.
Apart from any car or brand product quality...the another important question is how much car owners known for optimum driving practice and perodic maintenance importance... because its also a important matter to the life of any car..my guess..the ratio will be 50 : 50 or less.
What are your thoughts on corrosion control? Krown or Fluid Film? What good is the rest of the car when the undercarriage is gone?
my question as well. I think that a good Krown or equivalent treatment every few years is a good thing. I have seen the underside of 10+ years old car without said treatment and it's not pretty. Especially in winter snow salt / brine environments.
preach it brotha amen
Subarus CVT is supposed to be be a lifetime. There’s no dip stick to check it.
But when our Outback hits 30K miles we’ll take it to Subaru and have it changed.
CVT transmissions are weaker and break more than regular transmissions.
Good video. The only drawback is second point which is changing the windshield fluids. If I do not change windshield fluids what will happen? The wiper will need to be replaced. Which is not a great deal to change those rubbers. I think making windshield fluid change point no 2 is set back on this good video.
Maybe paid ad!!!
My local Honda dealership recommend a coolant drain and fill, no flush.
RainX winter washer fluids left a smear on my windshield the entire time I used it., almost like when you get wax on your windshield. Not sure if it's what they use to keep the ice off, but I will go back to using plain old winter washer fluid...
Same here. Leaves a thin film on the screen which is smeary and awkward to look through. I ditched it and went back to my old basic screenwash for half the price.
soooo important right fluids
How about door hinges, bearing Grease and bearing joint?
Turned into a rain X ad real quick lol
I wonder what you mean by driving the car for "a long distance periodically . I have 2 extra cars I don't use often. I will take them on the hwy once a week. But only for about 5 to 10 miles. Is that enough ?
I drive an 8 year old Toyota Yaris and actually have never done anything other than a yearly service. Very useful though
Hey, How is the milage on that now?
It's about 32,000 miles@@dreudax3294
Should I go to dealership for maintenance or no?
Make sure your always have a car fund that can cover oil changes, tire rotation, general maintenance etc. You never want to have to hold off general maintenance because you went broke, it's not worth it in the long run.
Can you do a video on the Mazda Rotary engine? I believe the advantage of it, the engine is small and could be a backup for electric cars
I had an RX 8.... The rotary just guzzles oil (need to replace it every 6 weeks and premium oil at that) and is very expensive to maintain.
Always use synthetic blinker fluid if you live in cold climates.
Manual transmission need to have their fluid changed just like an automatic???
I have a 2020 Honda Civic Si at 85k. I should probably change the transmission fluid.
In other words: it's remarkable, how long a car can last, if you replace the vehicle fluids and filters on a regular base...
Well thanks for the info!
Drive like an old man, change the fluids, wax the car and spray the rubber parts with protective...also don't forget the filters like air, gas and transmission....
Also..hope it was not built on a Monday or friday
caring your kid
My tryton l 200 2018 model do not have a dip stick for transmission oil
do you know of any good mechanic as urself in the ORLANDO area?
This might be a dumb question, but when I change the oil, transmission fluid, e.t.c, do I need to drain the old fluid and put completely new fluid? Or do I just need to top it up?
Drain the old fluid
Drain all the old fluid. Flushing fluids should be left to experts. Topping off fluids depends…when was the last time any oil or transmission filters were changed? How much fluid are you losing between scheduled intervals? Excessive loss could be bad seals or gaskets.
Nice info thank you very helpful
I reccomend the BMW owner buy a couple of funnels. Pouring fluilds directly into the opening will get messy.
Scotty kilmer approves of these measures
Super video 11:16
My new b58 bmw said first oil change is at 16500 kms and I ve stuck to it and the car reminded me to change oil at exactly that, should I ignore that and just do it every 8000kms?
If you plan to keep it well past the warranty period then yes change the oil every 8,000-10,000km.
@@carhelpcorner Ahh okay thank you, I ll consider this a “hard break in” and change oil at 8000 interval moving forward, hopefully it ll still serve me well past 250 klicks
We own two Rav 4 Primes.
We mostly operate in EV and the gasoline engine does not operate.
Miles driven is not a good indicator of engine parts moving with a plug in.
Can't trust mechanics anymore. I could write a book...
Sadly this is true. Everyone looking to rip you off
I don’t understand the bias against bmw. I have a 2014 320d at 210000km with regular service every 14/15k km with the certified dealer. I’ve never taken it anywhere else. Most of the miles are highway miles. I’ve literally never had an issue other than a small coolant leak at 200k. Got the leaking plastic component replaced. I don’t even know what the engine light on this thing looks like. It’s been unbelievably reliable! Feels the exact same way as when I first got it. Could I simply be lucky?
Get rid of it now while it’s still ok. All those plastic parts you will have to replace.
Very helpful, but if you're going to advertise mid-video, you should always disclose that it's a paid ad.
❤
outdated info- you don't need to change synthetic oil every 5-6k ; you can go at least 7.5-10k
Your car longevity depends on the honestly of a skilled mechanic
Always remember. Oil is cheap, engines are expensive.
I use synthetic oil and change it every 3500 miles
Hope someone buys you a couple of funnels for Christmas😅.
0/10 no blinker fluid change no guesta
Americans: I'll ignore that
French: Why is that
Italians: I should do that?
Germans: Of course
Americans are the queens of oil change though. Germans go even double or triple this without an oil change.
Wanna make the beater last forever? Repair everything that breaks. ITM, the mechanics will skin you alive.
Oh no, you can do it yourself, saving money and knowing it should be done right. Changing your own transmission fluid is super easy IF you're doing a drain and fill, easier than doing an oil change. When you change the trans filters, it's just a little more irritating. This young man is probably too rich to do his own, so he may not know how easy it is. AND...to be safe, be sure to change your trans. fluid every 25, 000 to 35,000 miles REGARDLESS, ESP. if it's a CVT trans. And I would do oil changes EVERY 5,000 miles to help ensure maximum longevity. Always use quality oil and manufacturer spec. trans fluid. HCF-2 for Honda CVT trans. Coolant, etc. If any of y'all need more details, just comment and ask me. Trust me, I've done all my own maintenance for over 40 years now. I have had only Honda's and Mazda's, but never have I had a vehicle not last over 250,000 miles.
Change all oem to aftermarket quality parts, pricey but better parts
Lifetime = warranty time. Do not trust lifetime fluids
Ill be more interested in living forever myself first to enjoy the car
So only Japanese vehicles are in this video? 🤔
Think driving once a week is good enough?
As long as the one day a week drive is longer then 30 minutes it should be okay
@@ryans413 nice
In other words follow your manufacturer hand book it that simple.
Why is no one using a funnel?
If it is a bmw for sure will not last forever, instead buy a toyota ...
