- My throw at secret mitered dovetails, in the shape of a keepsake box. Using handtools only, start to finish.
Ordinarily I would shy away from a project as labour intensive as this. But I had good reason. And I'm glad I did because in the end, I upped my game.
I've tried to show all the important steps without overdoing it. And I'm not hiding anything either, whether it be amateurism or enthusiasm. It's a fun thing to do if you have the time and you're into woodworking.
Nice work. The result spoke to your craftsmanship and the love for your child.
Thank you. The things we do for our kids...
A lovely box. If you take it that the methods you used to build the box reflects the love and passion that you feel, then brilliant.
Thanks! I felt compelled to go the extra mile, for sure...
Beautiful piece of work and those words at the end got me!
Thank you!
That’s the last time I say I don’t have the tools for the job, what I mean is I don’t have the skills and I do have the tools 😂🇬🇧
😂 Well I did buy a rabbet block plane just for this one...
Thats a nice Record 778 plane you’re using with the fine blade adjustment. You have the passion and the discipline for the craft!
Thank you! It took me a while to get the hang of it... I spent six years collecting all these tools and I'm proud that I could figure out how to use them!
You did such a nice job on this!
Great woodworking skills and the result is a gorgeous keepsake box.
Thank you for sharing this with us. I really enjoyed watching your video.
Thank you kindly! I'm glad you enjoyed it.
You nailed both the project and the video. Top job.
Thanks and glad you liked it! Both were more work and more fun than I thought at first...

Congratulations, no better job in the world
That it is! Thanks, Steve!
when you split the board how did you prevent bowing of both pieces?
Hi Sean, I think it helps to let a piece sit for a day or so after you've made a cut, let it do its thing, and then plane it straight... But you never know, I guess....
For something as small as this I don't really think about it - just see what happens, really. I knew where that oak came from and was quite sure it was bone dry. That helps too, I guess.
Larger pieces (like the ones for that tool chest I built a while ago) and especially panels I tend to clamp together whenever I'm not working on them.
