Yamaha PSR-E383: Fix For Sustain Pedal Issues With MIDI

- Short video on how to fix an issue with the Yamaha PSR-E383 (same issue existed with the E373) when using it as a MIDI controller - with SOME apps (GarageBand on iPad, Synthesia) the sustain pedal doesn't work.
This video shows a fix for that issue specific to the E383, and also introduces a new app I found called MIDICulous; similar to Chordie (shows the keys, chords and notes you play), except MIDICulous works on iPad as WELL as pc, and it also has built in sounds, which Chordie does not.

You can fix the sound balance issue on the keyboard too. There is a third function option called 55 DuoType. Change it to 1 Balance.
Only the auto chord progressions feature and the slimmer case seem new in the 383. Get the slightly older 373 as its almost identical, even down to this bug!
Thanks for sharing that! Yea it’s not a huge upgrade, although Yamaha kept the price the same which is awesome. The metal speaker grills, smaller form factor and the auto chords are still great for the same $ - if you can find a 373 for a big discount then yeah get that.

You would expect the sustain pedal to work anywhere, it's a very standard MIDI message. This is so weird. When you get into teacher split mode, some of the actual Yamaha pianos actually convert the left pedal to a sustain pedal (for the teacher) as well. I wonder if the PSR shares some of the firmware and possibly changes the MIDI message of the pedal in this mode. It would be a good idea to use something like MidiView to check what is been sent in either case.
Hey that's an interesting idea! This was a problem with the prior model as well (PSR-E373) but NOT with the next model up in the same line (PSR-E473/EW425) so there's definitely something weird going on there.

Out of curiosity I checked the MIDI messages that PSR-E383 sends. When you press the sustain pedal it sends 3 cc messages on channels 1, 2, and 3. Channel 1 and 2 have value of 127, but channel 3 has value of 0. When you release the pedal, it sends 0 on all 3 channels. Yamaha DGX-670 also sends 3 messages on channels 1-3 but all of them have the same value, either 127 or 0. I also checked Casio CTS1 and Akai MPK mini. They send cc messages on channel 1 only. Most DAWs except GarageBand probably, allow you to route messages from any MIDI channel to any track. I tested it in Bitwig Studio. If you route only channel 1 to your track then sustain works, but if you route all channels, then sustain doesn’t work, because 0 on channel 3 overwrites 127s on channels 1 and 2. If you want to use PSR-E383 as a MIDI controller you need a better DAW 🙂
I did some more research. PSR-E383 can play up to 3 voices at the same time. That’s why there are 3 midi channels. In split mode, left-hand area (bass) sends midi messages on channel 3. Right-hand area could have 2 channels - main voice (midi channel 1) and dual voice (midi channel 2). Because sustain pedal is shared by all 3 midi channels it makes total sense to apply sustain only to melody / lead voices (1&2) and not bass (3). More advanced / expensive instruments like Yamaha MODX have more channels (16) and more control of sustain and other parameters. Anyways, as I said in most DAWs you can choose which midi channels to record on which tracks. In that case the sustain works properly. The issue you have described is a limitation of GarageBand software.

Tony, I apologize for placing this question in your most recent video, instead of another, more relevant to my question video.
You have Hammond SKPRO and Studio Logic Numa Compact 2X (not counting Yamaha DGX-670).
The price of Hammond SKPRO 73 key is higher than Nord Electro 6D 73 key (very similar actually) in Canada.
What made you decide to get Hammond SKPRO instead of Nord Electro 6D that has very good and upgradable piano (and other) sounds?
I am still debating what I should get for myself if I wanted to learn to play organ. I would definitely return P-525 and get (for instance) Yamaha P-45 (on sale now) that I would use with my piano VSTs. I would be also practicing on Yamaha C7 and just learn to play organ (mostly jazz) at home.
Your comments would help me to decide what to do. I am still considering Hammond Solo and (as you suggested) XK-1C.
I will first need to find a good organ online school.

LOL no worries. I decided on the Hammond over Nord (or any other clones like Yamaha CK/YC, etc) mostly because of the better quality organ engine. The CK was fine (sounded great to me . . . at first, because I didn't know too much), but then I borrowed an SK1 (predecessor to the SK Pro, came out in 2011) - it's demo'd a bit in my M-Solo review; and it sounded SOOOO much better (even being that old) than my CK did (and the leslie effect was way better, and the overdrive was better etc). The Nord's sounds are probably closer than the Yamaha, but I always found the Nord user interface confusing, and . . . I knew if I bought something that didn't say "Hammond" I'd end up buying a Hammond eventually anyways.
I was very torn between the SK Pro and phase out the Numa so just carry 1 board to band practice vs. keep the Numa for piano/EP and get an XK-4 or XK-1C (also circa 2011) for just organ. The piano on the SK Pro is way better than the SK1, says "Y-CF" on screen so that tells me it's probably the CF Grand sample from the P-125; the EP's are awesome on the SK Pro as well, the only weak voices are the "extras" like woodwinds and brass. I still go back and forth a bit wondering if I should have gotten the XK-4, but now that I have the SK Pro, if I sold it I would lose enough that I might as well just keep it and if I wanted to could pretend it's an XK-4 and just use the organ :)
Knowing how you put a lot of emphasis on your piano actions, I am willing to bet you won't like playing piano pieces on a Nord Electro or an SK Pro anyways, so maybe keeping a piano with action you like and just getting an XK-4 might be the way to go. I don't mind playing piano on the semi weighted non graded action, but you might think differently. I know most stores don't stock Hammonds, but if you spent some time on an Electro just playing some of your piano pieces the action is very close so it would give you more of an idea.

The M solo costs more but the Hammond sounds are far better and the key action isn’t perfect but it’s also better than the CK. If you want to try cheap the YC reface is the same sounds as the CK (not as good as Hammond but not bad) - and then get a cheap non/semi weighted midi controller like m-audio (that has 5 pin midi out) and connect that to the reface. The reface sounds are ok but you can’t learn to play on those tiny keys.
I did list my M solo on reverb if you decide to go that way

Perhaps the Garage Band needs to fix their software.
I don’t think it’s GarageBand - other apps also have this issue - I think it’s something to do with Yamaha not sending a standard MIDI message on the E383/373 (this is not an issue with the Yamaha PSR E473/EW425)
@@PianoTone To use an instrument as a MIDI controller you need to understand how midi works and how the instrument works. Yamaha instruments usually send midi messages on multiple channels. In many cases you have to tell the software what to do with those multi channel messages. As I said in my another post the sustain didn’t work in Bitwig Studio DAW initially with default configuration, but after filtering out midi channels 2&3 everything worked. With more complex instruments like Yamaha MODX you always have to manually configure midi channel routing in your DAW.
