Roland GO:Keys 5 Review

Yamaha PSR-E383: Fix For Sustain Pedal Issues With MIDI
zhlédnutí 461Před měsícem
Short video on how to fix an issue with the Yamaha PSR-E383 (same issue existed with the E373) when using it as a MIDI controller - with SOME apps (GarageBand on iPad, Synthesia) the sustain pedal doesn't work. This video shows a fix for that issue specific to the E383, and also introduces a new app I found called MIDICulous; similar to Chordie (shows the keys, chords and notes you play), excep...

Not piano sound😢???
No it’s just an organ. Thanks for checking out the channel feel free to subscribe
Thanks for this. I was looking for exactly this info. I have a Fatar StudioLogic 88 key controller, and I’m considering getting an SK61 and was hoping that I could set it up to play piano/pad on the weighted 88 keys, and the B3 Organ sound on the SK61 (stacked on top) so this is exactly what I need to pull the trigger. Getting a whole new 88 key piano was something I didn’t really want (and I wanted the portability of the 61, plus the StudioLogic has better key action), but I will sometimes want to set it up like that with the two keyboards stacked, and this is perfect. The only thing better would be if the SK61 had waterfall keys, but it’s not a dealbreaker, especially at that price.
That will be a nice setup and yes should work nicely! Thanks for checking out the channel feel free to subscribe
Did you find the action noticeably more resistant than Casio ct-s1 or Yamaha np-35? Another reviewer captured a digital force gauge with a 50% higher reading than either. Like you he said he came to like the action after a period of adjustment. A test of the action of the previous go piano model in a store suggests this aspect might be an ongoing design decision by Roland but it caused me to move on pretty swiftly. I don’t mind using some extra arm weight to start a key off but I really don’t like constantly applying it to keep the key down. Pianos, real ones only I’m afraid, at least don’t seem to have this latter inconvenience.
I definitely found it heavier than either the CTS1 or NP35; those are “almost semi weighted feel”, the Roland feels very much like an actual semi-weighted keybed. Thanks for checking out the channel feel free to subscribe
Thank you for this comprehensive video on the Roland Go Keys 5. I have just purchased this along with the wireless adapter with cloud membership. I really enjoyed your run through of the keyboard and showing how you navigate the keyboard. I notice there is hardly anyone out there talking or reviewing this keyboard. I can’t wait to get to try it out as it will be more portable for me than the FP30 to take to church ❤
Thanks glad you enjoyed the video! And you will find it a LOT more portable than the FP-30! Hope you enjoy it! Thanks for checking out the channel feel free to subscribe
I just bought the Casio PX-S3100, and I'm loving it!!! Your video here is by far the most comprehensive of all that I've seen on CZcams, and I thank you very much for the upload. I've already been studying the user manual for several days, so I've been ready for this video, and it filled in a bunch of blank spaces that I hadn't covered yet. Of course you couldn't cover everything, so I'm wondering if you've done any other videos on the pitch bend, the knobs, and perhaps the accessories? In any case, thank you once again for a great upload!!
Thanks so much for the kind words! And this is the only video I did on that one sorry… but glad it helped! Thanks for checking out the channel feel free to subscribe
Great video Tony! Roland has really brought a great set of features to this price point. Will it spur brand-Y to raise their game?
Thanks!! I’m looking forward to Y’s response with new versions of the E-473/EW-425
I have this keyboard and use the bluetooth midi function to automatically change the sounds. I use the Forscore app on my iPad and have a setlist there. I can program midi changes there so when I load up a new sheet music the app changes the sound on my keyboard. I love that being bluetooth I dont have to physically connect my ipad with the keyboard.

Tony, do you mind asking my which keyboards you currently have? 😊
:)
Yamaha DGX-670, Yamaha PSR-E383, Yamaha PSR-EW425, Studiologic Numa Compact 2X, Roland GO:Keys 5, Hammond SK Pro 73. Yikes too many ;)
Hi Tony, I recently got the px-s3000 and I'm looking in it the setting to set a fixed sustain on the notes (without needing the pedal), but i can't find the setting. Do you know how to set fixed sustain on casio px s3000? (I used yamaha dgx-660 earlier and it had this setting)
I've even looked at the manual, but can't find any such setting. Can you please guide me if you know anything about this? Thank you!
I looked through the manual and couldn’t find anything for it …
The ability to use WC-1 is also a killer feature. Esp. since it also gives you access to virtual instruments on the Roland Cloud. I got this for my GAIA2 and the Roland Cloud is a great addition.
That’s awesome to know thanks for sharing!
@@PianoTone can you download these sounds from the cloud for permanent keeps?
We got a gokeys 3 as a gift for a friend to start learning. He liked it a lot but all the functions overwhelmed him!
Hopefully my videos will help! More are coming … Thanks for checking out the channel feel free to subscribe
fortunately he doesn't have to use them all now, and can grow into them. spoiled for choice 😁
As you alluded to in your video Tony, I did not think that you would be happy with a Roland product 😊
LOL - I actually really liked the FP-E50 just not the action; this one is kind of a semi weighted FP-E50 in a lot of ways …
Fantastic detailed review as always, for my piano needs i have a older yamaha p255, but currently looking for a fun portable keyboard for small gigs, this could do the job nicely
Thanks so much! I bought it for the same reason; 11 lbs, LR line outs, good sounds & decent action! High hopes for using the chord sequencer for backing tracks
@@PianoTone hi, how many sounds, can you layer ? Is this a 16 multi sound. Like most others

Great review, I'm subbed of course for quite a while and forgot to post a comment. So just know you're appreciated very much ! I am wondering if the speakers are enough for a solo piano bar / cafe gig ("piano bar" style etc.) ? ty
The speakers are surprisingly good and loud (was playing one in the store the other day actually); you MIGHT be able to get away with just the speakers, but to be honest you really should have some external amplification, like a powered PA speaker, even if it was small.
@@PianoTone Thanks !
This video really helped me to better understand the finger chord and chord styles on the DGX 670. Thank you for this and I am like you I am a pianist and also and organist and I am really excited about this instrument and all that it has to offer. It seems almost limitless and the sounds and rhythms for the $$ P R I C E $$ are amazing bargain as no other 88 keys 🎹 keyboard 🎹 of any of the other brands come close to it for the 💥💥💨B A N G💨💥💥 for the $$ B U C K $$. I have a KORG X-2 vintage 1994 that I bought new in early 1995 and it recently went dead on me so I get it back from the repair shop shortly and it was the memory battery 🔋 that had finally died🪫and the 3-1/2 inch floppy disc drive had died several years ago. However it was replaced with a SSD DRIVE and some keybed and button work it should be back in great shape. It has lots of sounds that are still quite useable still especially guitars 🎸 and strings 🎻🎻🎻and very C😎😎L special effects sounds. So I should be able to put together some awesome multitrack songs between it and the KORG. I also have a Alesis HR-16 drum machine that is really a great drum machine and will probably use it in some cases. Again thanks for the awesome video support very much appreciated.
Thanks so much, glad you found the video helpful! And thanks for checking out the channel, feel free to subscribe
Tony, as you said Hammond digital organ have a standard octave width (XK-4: Octave width: 16.5cm; white key length ~13.5cm) Yamaha YC-61 on the other hand has: Octave width: 16.1cm; white key length ~14cm I like YC-61 very much. Michael
Awesome thanks for sharing that!
"Yesterday" is not a waltz (should be 4/4 time) right?
LOL you are correct! My first version of this video I was using Norwegian Wood as the example, and I switched to Yesterday at the last minute and forgot to edit my script to say 4/4. Good catch! Thanks for checking out the channel, feel free to subscribe
Preciate the detailed review. Idk why yamaha wont change that plug its like the weakness on many keyboards. As far as the speakers i think they did perfect... they're there but you cant see them! Looks better to me.. Im super excited for mine im coming from the mm series I got in 08 so its been a while since i had a new board.
Congrats which one did you get the 61 or 88? Hope it arrives soon! Thanks for checking out the channel, feel free to subscribe
@PianoTone Preciate it.. I went with the 88, an excellent condition from the guitar center for 1100. It actually delivers to my local Guitar center today. Question: Have you tried different expression pedals? I was trying to save a buck on the Nektar pedal on Amazon. I'm not sure if it would be compatible.
@@streetzfpv Any model will likely work fine; I've been using those cheap M-Audio ones and they're ok (they do the job) I tried the Yamaha one and it's definitely sturdier and better built but it doesn't perform any better, and it's bulkier and heavier to carry around. To be honest I'm still looking for the "right one"; the Roland EV-5 is one I want to try - it looks sturdy but it isn't big and clunky. I tried a stufiologic one off amazon and omg it was massive so I sent it back. :Let me know how the Nektar one is if you get it!
Thanks a lot, you helped me figure it out:) But I have one issue, I'm always running out of memory, the song just stops and says "mem full", and I've cleared all my unused users. But no matter what I can't record more then two songs without it filling up, please help me with that if there's a fix.
I’ve never seen that to be honest - I’ll reply again if I can figure anything out
@@PianoTone thank you🙏 and if there's a way to do live loops, or just make a recording that loops that'll be great cause I haven't figured it out yet
This amount of customization and associated with it the number of manual pages to read (it is not intuitive) plus the number of outputs (some I would never need) made me decide to return my Hammond XK-4 and get Yamaha YC-61 (plus a MIDI controller). I do not like to feel overwhelmed 😊
There definitely can be a crazy amount of deep diving!
Thanks Tony. Very helpful. Do you have any CK tricks for transitioning live between two live-sets with different overlapping strings/pads. I've hacked it with copying the same level volume of a pad/string part to another live-set and pedal, but still haven't found an elegant way to seamlessly do this. This would make a great video for there are no equivalents I have found. Thanks for all you do for the CK community.
I never actually had the need to bounce quickly from live set to live set so I've never thought about it. To be honest nothing comes to mind other than exactly what you've done (matching volumes); if both live sets are set to control volume with the expression pedal you could fade out and fade in (if that works in the song). Can't really think of anything else . . .
@@PianoTone Thanks! Good point.
It looks like the key signature options are only for major keys. How do you select a minor key?
!EXCELLENT IN DEPTH REVIEW! I've been watching reviews on this Digital piano, as it caught my attention... ALL other reviews showcased the AWESOME Sound Engines, and it's SPECTACULAR Sound... BUT... Nothing in depth as far as ALL the features! Taking into consideration my budget for a New Piano {$1000 - I CAN'T make a mistake}, this fit NICELY, and you DEFINITELY allowed me to Pull The Trigger on this!!! Great Sound isn't the ONLY consideration when buying a Piano, but what you NEED IT FOR... and that's what THIS IN DEPTH REVIEW ALLOWED US TO KNOW... {For me, a CHURCH SOLO PERFORMER & HOME RECORDING ENTHUSIAST} is Perfect!!!... It might NOT have a 16 Track Sequencer, but I can get around that with my DAW and a little extra effort... God Bless, and THANKS A MILLION PIANO TONE!!!... You Got My Like & Sub!!!
Thanks so much for the kind words, I’m just glad you found the review helpful! And thanks so much for subscribing! Hope your FP-E50 arrives soon!
@@PianoTone : Thanks: I haven't done it yet, as my other choice is the Yamaha DGX 670, I'm Torn between the two. The Roland is not light, but the Yamaha is a lot heavier & not as much connectivity {Although I was a gigging Drummer, and I'm used to lugging heavy Drums {But now I'm 70}, not as young or strong as I used to be; but @ the end of the day I'm more interested in how either of these applies best to my One Man Band & Home Recording situation. I will surely watch your videos on the DGX 670! Maybe you can give me an opinion as to which one would suit me better? I VALUE YOUR OPINION! Thanks.
@@rickbserrano7648 They're both great products (I have a lot of DGX videos since I own one). czcams.com/play/PL_W0EMCT9oNbuGdwmq8-zPMmyIzxCuEYM.html DGX Advantages: - better on board recording (16 track MIDI sequencer with punch in punch out etc) - lighter faster key action (if that's your preference) - PROBABLY better programmed styles (that's an opinion, but Yamaha usuallu does the best job) - screen is amazing FP-E50 Advantages: - not as heavy (DGX is a 50 lb beast) - chord sequencer is an AMAZING feature (IF you're going to use it) - Left and right line outs (much better for connecting to PA systems, amps, mixers etc) - more realistic action (compared to acoustic pianos; it's triple sensor with escapement, but also a heavier feeling action than DGX) Totally personal stuff: I like the action (lighter) and piano sounds (brighter) on the Yamaha, tons of people have the opposite opinion. The FP-E50 wasn't out when I bought my DGX, would I still have bought the DGX if it was? To be honest, not sure! If you're getting it for home writing, the DGX would be better for the writing part, once it's written, the chord sequencer on the Roland would be awesome so . . . Hope I didn't confuse you more lol!
Hmm, didnt work for me. I tested it in Keysight and Synthesia. I followed your Explanations (and i also have a E373) but it simply didnt work. my Pedal works, its just not showing anywhere in the software :(
As you know Tony, I (after returning of Hammond XK-4) almost bought Nord Electro 6D 73 keys but after analyzing again what already have (many piano and organ VSTs and different pedals) and what I really need, I ordered Yamaha YC61 and Arturia Keylab Essential 88. I also have Studiologic 17 note pedalboard on order. This will be my setup for organ (both B3 and pipe) and basic blues and jazz piano practice (I signed up for a few courses). The next will be to get a custom made wooden stand 😊
Wow that sounds awesome, hope you like the YC and Keylab; are you going to setup the Keylab as a lower manual and just live with the weighted keys for organ so you also have them for piano?
@@PianoTone Keylab Essential 88 does not have weighted keys, Tony 😊 Yes, it will be my second manual for the organ (and for piano).
Is it possible to play classical music on this keyboard?
I don’t play classical music so I’m not the best person to ask; many classical players will demand a fully weighted and graded hammer action, this keyboard is semi weighted in the interest of being portable, and being a decent compromise to play both piano and organ and synth on the same keyboard. So, some might say no it’s not; others (someone who wants to play classical at a cafe and only have to carry around a 15 pound keyboard) might say it’s fine/be willing to get used to it. Hope that helps! Thanks for checking out the channel feel free to subscribe
Norwegian Wood on the nylon string guitar patch sounded really cool
I agree! Thanks for checking out the channel feel free to subscribe
Wow..overwhelmed by thoroughness of your reviews. Wondering if this DP lacks a simple 2 track recording feature, which I assume would be made to ext storage?? (ie, is there only 1 internal midi track). eg, recording piano chords on 1 track, then recoding a string section on track 2 while track 1 plays back (thinking maybe there’s no onboard memory for playback of both tracks). Keep these vids coming.
Thanks so much! No there isn’t an onboard MIDI recorder; just audio recordings (and no overdubbing or anything). Thanks for checking out the channel feel free to subscribe
Hi Tony, I'm considering the following options, can you kindly let me know your thoughts? Casio px-s3000, Yamaha P115, Yamaha Dgx-620.
The P115 and DGX620 are both much older models (P125 replaced P115 years ago and the P225 replaced the P125 last year;there have been multiple DGX models since the 620, current is 670). I would definitely recommend the PXS3000 over those; the 3100 is out now but really isn’t much different than the 3000. Thanks for checking out the channel feel free to subscribe

Tony, I would like to share with you that XK-4 is too complicated for me. I can play basic patches but after two weeks I am still studying the manual (more than 160 pages). It is not to know everything but to just do basic patch and tone edits and other functions. I think that it is all too much for me. I like the sounds, I like the action, I am impressed with the number of options and features but … I will be returning it. Another problem for me is the high cost of a 20 note pedal board and its weight. I am getting cheaper Studiologic pedalboard but there are (as I read) problems with its proper function when connected to XK-4. Believe it or not but I am getting Nord Electro 6D 73. I will have it in two weeks. Cheers, Michael
I know what you mean - the SK Pro is complicated as well; I am considering going to a Yamaha YC61. :)
@@PianoTone I was also considering Yamaha YC61 but YC73 does not have waterfall action and YC does not have pipe organ sounds. By the way, the other problem is that when pushing the key slightly to get a sound there are sound “oscillations” - in other words the sound triggering is a bit “flaky”. Nord Electro 6D just triggers the sound (when a key is pushed) more reliably.
Are the “oscillations” on initial key touch you’re talking about on the Hammond? If so that’s intentional - real Hammond tonewheels do that (it’s a “virtual multi contact” keybed). The M-Solo had that as well, the older SK1 doesn’t; the XK-5 actually has real multi contacts instead of virtual to do the same thing. The YC61 has waterfall keys the 73 doesn’t
@@PianoTone Thank you. What I meant by “oscillations” was that the sound is triggered but does not stay unless you press slightly deeper. If I just pass this point I may trigger very short sound or series of short sounds. Nord Electro 6D does not have it (or it is far less pronounced). I found this effect difficult to deal with when playing fast piano pieces (using Piano VSTs).
Ps. Owner’s Manuals: YC61 - ~70 pages Nord Electro 6 - 32 pages Hammond XK-4 - 163 pages 😊
Thank you so much Tony...I've owned my E473 for an over a year now and had no Idea how to record( the owners manual is terrible and was of no help). Your video was a tremendous and a great instructional tool. I am 75yrs old and just need to remember all that I have learned. I feel I am finally making progress and will continue to watch your videos down the line.
Glad you found the video helpful! Thanks for checking it out, feel free to subscribe
There still seems no way to turn on automatic damper without a damper pedal. I want some sustain on my notes without carrying my pedal around too…

Thank You!! I was 2 days putting this stand up .. now I realize that those 'the wedge nuts' needed to placed in the rear bar .. thank you .....
Glad it helped! It's a good stand too hope you like it. And thanks for checking out the channel, feel free to subscribe
I love it except I’m not sure why they have B3 and C3 as different sounds. The vintage B3 and C3 are identical except for the cabinet (which doesn’t effect the sound)
I've never even seen a real Hammond in person before so I can't comment (sadly). Doesn't the C3 have a speaker built into the cabinet or something? Maybe it's that speaker they're trying to emulate (or is that the A100 or something?) Thanks for checking out the channel, feel free to subscribe
@@PianoTone the A100 does have an internal speaker
WOOW! thanks, explicas muy bien todo! resolviste muchas de mis dudas, buen video! ojala sigas haciendo mas videos así :)

Such helpful reviews and such a helpful site!! In your review you called the Numa the best deal at the price point. I wonder how you would compare it to the Korg D1, which at the same price point has none of the features but has the RH3 keybed from the top line Korgs like Kronos and Nautilus. That turned my head, but then you said the Numa is a perfect balance between hammer and synth weighting plus all the features. I definitely wish Studiologic didn't have the orange and white logo that looks like Amazon, but your review of the keybed is hard to ignore. In your opinion, for around $750, does the Numa beat the D1? Just bought you a coffee - appreciate you.
Hey thanks so much for the coffee and the kind words, super appreciated! I've never seen a D1 in person so I can't really offer much of an opinion. I've watched some reviews and it looks like a cool "bread and butter" stage option, it does have hammer action keys though (I've never played that action before either). As far as the Numa keys go, I'm not a synth player at all but I started as piano and have moved to 80% hammond organ and 20% piano and the keybed on the Numa is an awesome compromise for those, you can still play piano with some expression and resistance, but it's the best organ keybed I've encountered that's not ON an organ (Hammond, Nord Electro, Yamaha YC61). Sorry I can't be more help! Thanks again!
The full size kys are great if you’re going from a regular piano
Absolutely! And the new GO:Keys 3/5 have those as well, but are FAR better than the GO:Piano (review is coming soon :) Thanks for checking out the channel, feel free to subscribe
Hello Tony, Have you ever considered Mike Little’s Organ Pro course? Thank you
LOL funny you should ask. I've been in touch with him recently, and will be reviewing his courses. I've just gotten started so won't be super soon though.
@@PianoTone Great!!! I will be signing up today 😊
Thanks a lot for that tutorial. Is there a way to IMPORT MIDI data into the DGX 670? Or to control the DGX 670 with external MIDI, a DAW or sequencer? I see no documentation about that.
You should be able to open a MIDI file off a flash drive (I've never tried though). You can't control the DGX from another MIDI device though, you need a MIDI in (5 pin DIN) port to do that. Thanks for checking out the channel, feel free to subscribe
Hello. I know you’ve moved on from this digital piano; but do you remember if this keyboard has the ‘security screws’ for the safety straps that comes on some of the piano stands? Despite all the reviews, and even going through the marketing content, I cannot find a picture of the bottom/base of this piano! Thanks in advance.
You know what I have no idea! I am in music stores alot I'll try and look next time and see if I can tell. Thanks for checking out the channel, feel free to subscribe
@@PianoTonealready subscribed! Thanks for the prompt reply. So I ended up (despite it being a very different animal) ordering the Casio CT-S1-76 so if you happen to know, or find out out, if this unit has the safety/security screw, that would be helpful. There is hardly any info on this keyboard due to how new it is, and my unit is 2-3 weeks away. Sadly I know the OG CT-S1 does not have the security screw, so I doubt the 76 key version does. Fingers crossed they used some of the extra space for this but I’m not holding my breath!
@@TrunksCentral I was actually in a store yesterday and tried to look under the 1100 - to be honest it's hard to tell the security screws from the screws just holding the keyboard together. If the CT-S1 61 didn't have them I can 99% guarantee the 76 won't either. I've had keyboards with those and have never used the straps myself; are you thinking it would be important for you? As long as I have a solid stand, I'm good.

Just purchased yesterday. I'm a pianist for 60 years and I am having an absolute blast. The manual is going to take some time to get to so thank you so much for your video. I need to learn this thing. And I currently play on a Steinway studio, but I needed the addition of accompaniments for composing and quiet practice without the digital keyboard turned on.
Congrats! It is an awesome and fun piano. Thanks for checking out the channel, feel free to subscribe

Nice review. I do however believe the lack of left and right quarter inch audio out ports is unfortunate. The keyboard is advertised as portable and while you can use a splitter back your monitors or whatever. I'm thinking better resonance from two wires rather than one.. There's also the scenario where this device could be used as a house band on premise keyboard. Not really moving a lot but really nice to have. Me, I'm really not impressed with the built in speakers and found them to be a bit on the weak side.... Other than that, I loved it..
It is an awesome keyboard; Yamaha may have skipped the LR line outs so as not to cannibalize sales of their stage keyboards (although I wouldn't be moving this one around much :D). Thanks for checking out the channel, feel free to subscribe.
DEFINITELY a YES!
It is pretty amazing for the price. Thanks for checking out the channel, feel free to subscribe.
Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge. I really appreciate it. I am trying to find a way to get the DGX-670 to pair with Logic Pro so that each instrument, including the styles, can have its own midi channel even while playing, instead of recording everything and then transferring to the USB stick. I saw a video of a guy doing that with the Genos 2 in which he developed a template to send and receive midi information and record that in Cubase. I think the same concept could be applied to Logic Pro.
Sounds like the video you found should help! Thanks for checking out the channel feel free to subscribe
