If evil is a choice, can we change our mind for good?

- 4/25/24 - So, what does A Course In Miracles about the cause of evil in the world?
As I understand the Course, the root cause for all the evil is our belief that we separated ourselves from God. Our collective ego dreamt an entire world bound by time and space, where anger and pain and suffering are considered normal. The author of this world is not God, but our collective ego, which is a made-up thought system in our mind. To keep us separate from each other, our ego needs to keep us in conflict with each other.
It is easy to see that if we continually think of ourselves as defiled irredeemable sinners, we will agree with our ego that we deserve to suffer and die. There is no limit to the horrific evil thoughts we will have and deeds we will do if this is how we see ourselves.
Then, when we find the burden of our guilt unbearable, we will use the psychological tool of projection to propel our intolerable egoic thoughts onto other people, places and things. Once we project these heinous thoughts onto something or someone else, they possess them, not us, so we can judge and attack them for the thoughts we projected from our own mind. Projection affirms our belief in our separation from each other. It allows us to view ourselves as innocent and pure, miles above the person we are judging. We perceive them as guilty which justifies our attack on them.
The Course says this about the ego’s use of projection: “It projects conflict from your mind to other minds, in an attempt to persuade you that you have gotten rid of it. This has a number of fallacies which may not be so apparent. First, strictly speaking, conflict cannot be given to another, precisely because it cannot be fully shared…A second fallacy is the idea that you can get rid of something you do not want by giving it away. Giving it is how you keep it” (CE T-7.VII.3-4).
I think we can see that the evil in this world is based on this deceptive belief system called the ego. The good news is that the ego’s continued existence is dependent on our minds because it is just a belief. We can stop listening to our ego and change our mind to believe what is actually true about ourselves.
The truth is that we are all sons of God who have never been separated from our Creator. Our collective ego dreamed up this world of separation and attack. In reality, every one of us remains just as God created us, safe and secure in Heaven. We do experience the evil we see in this world, but it is just an illusion.
The Course says, “Do not be afraid of the ego…The ego can be completely forgotten at any time, because it has always been a belief that is totally incredible…The whole purpose of this course is to teach you that the ego is unbelievable and will forever be unbelievable” (CE T-7.VII.6-8).
When we were told we were separated from God and each other, we thought we were alone in this world. That made us fearful and subject to the schemes of the ego. But when we accept the truth that this world is something our egos dreamed up and that we all part of the one Son of God who is forever united with God, we affirm our true identification. It is when we know who we really are that we will see the face of Christ in each of our brothers and forgive them for their errors.
I invite you to join me in a practice of seeing Christ in every person and forgive them for their mistakes. When we look through the eyes of forgiveness, we will no longer fear people, places and things. We will drop the attack weapons of the ego because now we know all our former “enemies” only as friends and brothers. It is in this waking up that the ego’s dream world vanishes and we see the beauty of the real world that God created. The Course says, “Can you imagine how beautiful those you forgive will look to you? In no fantasy have you ever seen anything so lovely. Nothing you see here, sleeping or waking, comes near such loveliness, and nothing will you value like unto this, nor hold so dear. Nothing that you remember that made your heart seem to sing with joy has ever brought you even a little part of the happiness this sight will bring you. For you will see the Son of God” (CE T-17.II.1-5).
Wake up, beautiful Son of God and listen only to the Voice of God, within you!
