  • My woodworking journey started in a used 10x20 portable building and has grown from there. I built this shop 2 years ago while our house was being built. The main area is 24'x30' with a 12' lean-to . I spent every afternoon after work for a few months building the shop to what you see now. Since building this shop, I've changed the layout quite a few times and also added onto it by closing in 20' of the lean-to since then. In doing so I learned what I liked and didn't like with each version. With that said, I recently decided to change it to what think will be the perfect layout to optimize my work flow when working on projects. This seemed like the perfect time to finally do a shop tour. So stick around and see the layout with the new addition and let me know what you think in the comments down below.

    Nice shop, loved the video.
    Primary reason your CNC dust collection works better is because of the inlet and outlet configuration. You said the 6" helps "a little" in your video; it helps ALOT. From a conductance standpoint 6" will have well more than double the conductance (think of it as flow) of a 4" pipe, all else the same. Also the downstream configuration on your CNC dust collector is essentially optimized whereas your shop collector's downstream configuration is horrid for conductance (it looks really nice, so I understand why you did it). You want large diameters, minimal length, and minimal bends on both sides of the blower. You're choking the flow to the filter badly which causes causes a large pressure drop, thus decreasing flow rate at the tool-end.
    Hope this helps!

    • @DustinOliver-OCD
      @DustinOliver-OCD  Před 2 lety

      Thanks! I've considered upgrading to 6" inlet and outlet piping just haven't wanted to spend the money or the time to do so haha. I definitely will eventually just need to find some spare time.

    Quick comment here. I have also modified my 2hp harbor freight DC with the Rikon impeller, bigger 6” inlet, and a pleated filter. The reason you’re not getting the suction you want is very likely due to your huge run of 4” pipe down to your filter. Even if it’s 5” ducting, you still have 90 degree angles, and a long travel down to your filter, which is choking the air movement. If you simply lift the filter up to be right next to the DC housing, and do a straight short run with a 5”-6” duct, your cfm will drastically increase.

    • @DustinOliver-OCD
      @DustinOliver-OCD  Před 2 lety

      Thanks for the advice! I have considered changing it to a straight run to the filter, but I like having it close to the ground for convenience when it needs to be cleaned. I still may do it eventually.

      Thanks and no I didn't have to add any bracing. The top is an MDF like material but seemed a lot more dense, which made it more difficult then I expected with the palm router. I guess thats why its strong enough to not need bracing. Hope this helps good luck!

    Dustin, so many questions!
    OCD is a good thing for woodworkers.
    What are the dimensions of your main shop without the part you closed in? I'm trying to stuff everything into a 2 car garage and cant seem to accept the limitations I have on space but I want the Laguna bandsaw you have! Can you talk about the Husky adjustable table? Been looking at one. I like the addons you made. Does it take the weight of the laminated top and the drawers? How stable is it? I thought about using two of them for a miter saw station wings but then I saw the dog holes you made and wondered if it resist racking etc etc
    I like your shop. Would love to send some questions to you on if you're on Instagram. Thanks for the tour! Liked and subscribed

    • @DustinOliver-OCD
      @DustinOliver-OCD  Před rokem

      The main shop is 24x30 as for the husky table it handles the weight of the top and drawers well. The additional weight makes it really stable, its never moved on me with the wheels locked. The top will tilt some but not to bad, no different than it did with the smaller top it came with. I love having the ability to adjust the height, it makes a great infeed or outfeed for every tool too.

    How do you like that Husky workbench? Is it stable enough to work with for larger projects?

      It's been able to handle pretty much everything I needed to do on it.

    I've been planning to get the Husky height adjustable work bench and modify it like yours for some time now. Anything you'd do differently?

      The only thing I would do differently would be to center the top. Since I put a bigger one on I set it back a bit to still have access to the lift crank. Now it just leans to the back a little, not really a big deal though.

    Do you have any plans or videos for your your work bench? I have been trying to convince myself to buy the adjustable height table and I really like how you modified yours.

      Thanks and not yet! I may do something on it in the future as it has been a popular subject from the video.

    Please provide some info on your workbench. I can’t find it on Home Depot’s website. Awesome shop tour.

    Nice workshop I especially enjoyed seeing that you only have two woodpecker items instead of a wall full like a lot of these other CZcamsrs that just makes me say sponsor sponsor free tools that drives me nuts

      Thanks! I know what you mean. Everything in the shop was purchased with money made building projects with the tools i had at the time. Just slowly acquiring new tools as I go.
