  • Eos has a comprehensive effects engine. A step-based effect is just one of the types that can be created.

How do I record the effect with my cue? I would add the Cue and the effect but the effect wouldn't be there

There are many things wrong with the Effect Editor, I hope it will be redesigned one day.
    1. Why do I have to specify "Group 30 Effect 1"? Since these channels are allready stored in the Effect, the syntax "Effect 1 Enter" should be enough.
    2. Better though would be, if you just specify the type of effect and could use it for every channel selected. No need for Effect numbers. Syntax would be: "Group 30 Effect [Step Based] Time 1 Enter"
    3. Nick, why don't you show all the effect options in the video and instead just talk about them?

Im not from ETC, but I use EOS regularly
1: You have to specify the group to 1: keep syntax consistent with other types of effects(which can be created without specifying channels) and 2: be able to apply a step-Based effect to a subset of the recorded channels. Personally I don't use any step based effects because they are restricted to certain channels, and most of their functionality can be recreated in other types of effects or through channel selection.
2: Without effect numbers, there would be no way to record and recall effects. You would have to recreate the effect in the command line every time you use it. In my show file I have over 700 different effects, remembering all the different attributes of every effect would be impossible, and waste a lot of programming time.
3: Fair enough, I imagine he didn't show everything to keep the video short and to keep with the theme of these tutorials(quick and to the point). His explanations were good enough that I would know what things do without needing to see them
I think the EOS effects engine is pretty great, especially when combined with advanced channel selection, the only thing it is really missing is an easy way to do symmetrical effects(think wings on MA)

Visualization software is provided by Capture: capturesweden.com. We record this on a second computer and overlay it in the video.
