    I just put this Astrophytum on my wishlist 1 or 2 days ago, small seedlings are easy and cheap to come by here in NL. Great to see them out and about in mature form

    Crushing it Manuel, there's a foot of snow outside and my brain/soul really appreciates the desert time. I've never seen one in the wild but wondered if you've crossed paths with any MYR-OR or other Astro hybrids while down there?

      I’m glad you’re enjoying it! Thanks for coming along! I haven’t seen any hybrids partly because I’ve visited type localities for all species, where they don’t share range with one another but I’d love to see some hybrids for sure!

    Genuine question here. What is the consensus on seed collection for the average enthusiast? Obviously people tend to abuse everything but is it generally acceptable to take a few seeds and or seed pod? any input?

    • @RareCactus
      @RareCactus  Před 5 měsíci

      I think it’s best to buy seed from cultivation and take nothing from habitat 🤓

  • @risenfromyoutubesashesagai6302

    Hey Comanchee, in your well experienced opinion, what would you say would be the absolute BEST soil mix for Astrophytum, particularly Ornatum? I see some people say amending their soil mix with a tiny bit of lime is good for them, since they live in lime formations in habitat. I ask because i have a bag of lime in the garage for spreading on my lawn, and wondered if adding a spoon full to my Astrophytum's soil mix would be beneficial to them. Whats best for the plant is whats best for all, yea?

    • @RareCactus
      @RareCactus  Před 17 dny

      @@risenfromyoutubesashesagai6302 hey! That’s a good question and a source of huge debate. I myself don’t use lime because I found in my research that it is a stressor. In habitat, they have evolved to withstand it, and it makes them tougher long run. But in cultivation, especially if they’re not used to it, it can kill them. I would run an experiment and see how a few plants react after 2-3 years because I suspect nobody has done the experiment and they’re just sharing opinions 😅

    • @risenfromyoutubesashesagai6302
      @risenfromyoutubesashesagai6302 Před 17 dny

      @@RareCactus Well sir, I definitely don't want to run an experiment on any of my Astros... I love them far too much to take any risk!!! I'll just stick with the good ole mineral heavy mix for them. Thank you for your response. I too am an east coaster... just far more north of you. My wife has family in Port St Lucie, so we try and visit your state every so often. Its just a terrible, terrible drive from my state. Being much further north, my plants must join me and my family indoors each and every winter. I must dial back all water by mid September, and keep them dry all winter long. I'm glad it's only mid July, I still have quite a few more grow weeks left from up here! Happy growing, Comanchee! Keep up your good work, and keep your content flowing!!!

    Your channel is nice. I agree we shouldn't take endangered cacti, but I do harvest wild prickly pear here in missouri to grow so I suppose I'm a hypocrite

    Many cacti have medicinal uses. This is the sorrowas as does the San Pedro cacti. Many different uses.. so beneficial to the human spirit!
    Better understanding of what there and it's there for us to make use of.... Many benefits from the great wonders of the San Pedro cactus... Beautiful is the only way i can convey my experience... BEAUTIFUL!!

    • @RareCactus
      @RareCactus  Před 6 měsíci +1

      They’re amazing but truly there for their own sake, not for us to use and take 😅 Saddly everything humans see worthy of “use” gets destroyed instead of protected.

    I really enjoyed seeing those Ariocarpus and Astrophytums. How cold does it get there in Queretaro Miguel? I grow Ferocactus glaucescens and they can withstand temperatures down to 17℃ surprisingly, and there are some big ones growing in my neighbourhood under house eaves.
