If you live in an old brownstone, or brick building which is common in old cities like Boston, Chicago, or NYC, you probably already know that central Air Conditioning is prohibitively expensive to install. Mini Split heat pump units are a great alternative, as long as your local historical commission does not object to the ugly pipes running down the facade of you building. Here in the South End, the permitting process makes Split mini systems a less attractive option.
So we're left with sweaty summer nights or you can opt for a loud, obtrusive window air conditioner with precarious window mounting. Be sure to buy the additional homeowner's insurance for when your nephew tries to open the window at the July 4th gathering and drops your 12,000 BTU LG window unit 3 stories down onto uncle Paul's 911 Carrera.
There is a 3rd option however and it's my favorite for this situation. Enter the Midea U Shaped Air conditioner. The brilliant design of this incorporates a secure mounting system with excellent insulation from both weather and noise, along with the ability to open the window while maintaining a secure mount. Initial installation from new takes 40-60 minutes and uninstalling takes about 10 minutes. Subsequent installations in the same window will only take 15-20 minutes.
The noise level and energy consumption are kept in check by separating the external compressor motor and fans from the internal blower motor and fans. This window air conditioner is more similar to the Air conditioning system in Uncle Paul's Porsche than a conventional window A/C.
I've installed around 50 of these Midea U models in the last couple of summers and clients love them. If you have any questions, please leave a comment and I will respond promptly.

That's a pretty smart design
I think so too!
Kind of a mini, mini split for your window.
I actually have that AC. It's so quiet and works very well. You can also use the app or Alexa to control it. Installing it was hard since you have to assemble the bottom piece yourself and during the assembly you have to do adjustments. All I can say is I can go to a meeting online and they won't hear the AC.
I think you don't have to assemble them anymore. Mine was already assembled in the box. I had watched an instructional video and wasn't looking forward to that part but was glad to see i didn't have to do it.

We gained a repeat client when a tenant dropped an A/C out a window. They no longer let their tenants install their own A/Cs.
We had another client who's nephew dropped one onto a BMW from 3 stories up. The car was totaled. Luckily no people were on the sidewalk.

That's so cool! Bargain finds with a bit of character are always the best. Glad it's still going strong for you after a couple of years.
Midea inverter is a great AC... I've had it for a year and can't complain. I also have the LG inverter which has served me well for a few years, but when that goes bad I think I'll replace it with another midea since it's more compact, makes better use of the window, includes a bracket, allows more operational versatility with app controls, and cheaper.
Good reasoning. I have not experienced the LG inverter window units yet. I have however worked with the GE clearview and Midea beats that hands down.
Is my uncle had a Porsche I wouldn’t be using a window, air conditioning unit!😂

If you are using a window unit and if the air becomes humid, reduce the cooling degree of the air conditioner to reduce the humidity inside the house. The air conditioner uses the humidity outside to cool the inside.
Meaning set the temp higher?

The thermostat on these are faulty, compressor wont fully kick in unless it's extremely hot. A way to test is to pinch and hold the inside thermostat reader which is located in the front under the filter and you'll hear the compressor kick in fully.

The foam in the channel and across the seat of the window before placing the unit in position is a key for a good seal, I'll have to do that next time instead of stuffing it afterwards.
Good take away. A good seal makes so much difference.
Does it drop water outside??
Our management does not allow water dripping ACs because they treated the outside walls... just portable ACs
Actually these do not. They hold the water and it uses it to cool the motor which is one way they increase efficiency.
@elitehandyman911 wow thats good. i wonder, same are made for the horizontally sliding windows
I have this one and I'm very disappointed. It looks nice, it's quiet, but it's not as cold as I would expect. When on 100% fan, cool, and high, plus boost, I'm sweating when i sit about 5 meet away.
Is it new? What temps are you getting at the vent? You should see 50 degrees or lower. If not, then something may be off.
Nice & easy
Thanks for watching :-)
Do these pull air from the outside? Wondering if I need to look for window ac’s that have a filter of some kind since air pollution out here is pretty bad. Thanks for sharing!
Actually they do not.
The evaporator coil is inside while the condenser coil is outside. Air get pulled in from the front inside, through a silk filter, then runs through the evaporator coil and comes out cool from the top.
@@elitehandyman911 Perfect, thank you for confirming! For this model in particular, I saw some reviews that there was some rusting after a year? I was checking out Windmill and noticed they try to evaporate any condensation with a coil that heats it up? Any issues with this one?

What if you have a side sliding window?
Unfortunately the one in the video won’t work. You need a casement design like this one amzn.to/3yxSAxY
We had one installed in our guest home a couple of months ago and didn’t start using it until about last week when temperatures started getting high here in California, but I don’t feel like it really freshens up the space. The thermostat won’t let us go under 60f , is that normal? Could it be a faulty unit or am I asking too much of it?lol
Have you ever had a window ac that would take a room below 60?
As long as you matched the size with the BTU properly. Here's a couple tips.
Eco mode is default, but it shuts the machine off if once room reaches desired temp. near the machine. Restarts take a lot of energy and time to regain the cool. Be sure you have a tilt to the outside, but not too much tilt. The water in the outside pan is important.
Make sure you did not remove the drain plug in the pan as water in the pan is how these work.
Don't start with a 60 setting if the room is heat soaked at 88 degrees. Try to start with no more than 6 degrees difference and it will work better to start. Once the room starts too cool you can lower it.
Do you have Pic or idea for installing it for 47" window?
The inside window bracket has holes in the bottom as well. You could screw it down to the sill instead of on the ends. The Midea window frame locks will not be long enough, so you won't have that extra security, but you could live without them as long as the mount arms and sill screws are solid. Then you would just need to either tape together extra midea insulation which you can find here: amzn.to/3xyqToC Or fabricate something out of rigid insulation.
Does it come with that window tray?
If you mean the mount, or support, yes. Also comes with the insulation for the sides and bottom.
Thanks.
Does the bracket have to be removed at the end of the season? Will it inhibit window from closing/locking completely?
Yes, but it's super easy to remove. Once you've done the initial setup it's very quick to uninstall and reinstall.
Is this a good brand and/ or reliable?
I’ll be posting my 4 year review end of week. I have two myself. So far quite reliable, but getting louder with age.
I have a portable AC unit Whynter ARC-14S in my 12 x 25 room. It is rated 14,000 btu but it doesn’t get the room below 71 unless it is colder than 75 degrees outside. Would this Midea AC be a better choice? Which BTU model would you suggest? I like my bedroom temp to be in the mid to upper 60s even on a 95 degree day in NYC.
71 is pretty good for a portable unit, but how about your humidity?
You won't get mid 60's without central a/c or heat pump, but you can make it feel like that by reducing humidity which Midea is excellent at.
For a 300 sq. ft room 14,000 BTU is too much.
More BTUs is not always better. There's a balance between BTU and sq.ft.
I'd suggest going down to 8,000 BTU unit.
Overall, work on getting your humidity level down.
Here would be my choice for your sized room. amzn.to/3qBJxIJ
If you have prime, try it for 30 days and return if you don't like it. I'm willing to bet you'll find a huge improvement over the portable unit.
@@elitehandyman911 Thanks for the suggestion! I've heard Midea U ACs are excellent at removing humidity. I have also heard that Friedrich air conditioners cool rooms very fast, even more so than Midea. What do you think, have you used Friedrich ACs? The Whynter ARC-14S that I have is not great at removing humidity. When the temp goes to like 72 or 73 the humidity will hover around 60% rather than 50 or 40 percent. My portable unit makes the room cool but not so much a humidity reducer even while running 12 hours per day. My portable unit removes a lot of humidity when outside it is a dry heat. As for the room that is 71, that is just the spot closest to the AC, the other end of the 300 square foot room is at 75 degrees which is a bit on the warm side. How can I fix the temperature contrast in the room? 14,000 btu on the portable is 14,000 on the Ashrae btu while on the more accurate SACC btu it is more like 8,900 btu.

Technology is improving in some areas at least.
People use these all around the country. Not just New York. Not a fan of the gimmicky U shape either. I’ll always Just get a normal air conditioner.
They're definitely not for everyone.
It isn't just a gimmick. It separates the condenser fan and compressor from the air handler. That along with the inverter driven compressor is why it is quiet. It also has the advantage of leaving only a 4 inch tall gap to fill.
Are you hangry
Can you use a universal bracket, I was gifted a brand new machine but the brackets are missing, the original brackets are on back order.
You can use a universal one like this amzn.to/3Na1Iww The midea will not sit down into it, but use a little solid foam insulation weather-stripping and the window channel locks are built in, so that will lock it in somewhat.
You might just have to increase the bracket with some incline towards the outside as it won’t have the end outside depression in it like the original does. Or build up the front of the universal one to match the outline of the ac.

What about one for us people that live in the buildings with the suicide proof windows
I'm not sure what that is exactly, but you may be limited to a portable ac unit. You can mount those exhaust panels vertical or horizontal.
Those buildings should already have wall AC or central air since the windows cant open
It only has 8k btus for such a huge unit?
Well the size doesn’t equal the weight. The 12,000 btu is about the same size case but a-lot heavier.
@elitehandyman911 of course, I mentioned the size though. I do not like an 8k for such massive size.
The 12k is understandable.
Hola ay algún número telefónico para que me instalen uno
What city are you in?
¿En qué ciudad vives?
What's the price for one of these baby's???
Prices always change depending on where you live and supply / demand.
Check current price for the 8K-12k units here: amzn.to/4dTxutV
@@elitehandyman911 thanks
If you are a Costco member and today's date is prior to June 9, 2024, the 12,000 BTU unit is on sale for $299.99. Best price I've seen.
If you live in any of those cities you need to move.
Thanks for watching and sharing your thoughts! It's important to weigh the pros and cons of where we live.
