A Twin Turbo V6 Cadillac Makes No Sense (650HP ATS-V)

- Cadillac made waves with its insane supercharged V8 sleeper - the CTS-V. Once they established the V brand, they decided to take a big risk. Instead of only sticking to the V8 - they built the twin turbocharged V6 Cadillac ATS-V. It seemed like a weird decision, but thankfully the ATS-V proved it's worth and was a big hit with automotive journalist. With a ton of power, fast spooling twin turbos, and sharp handling. This thing is a beast. Today we drive a ZZperfomance full bolt on 650HP ATS-V - so let me show you what a modified ATS-V is all about.

Totally slept on these. Honestly.
Pretty incredible stuff.
I have a 16 ATSV in Pearl White. Came with a tune 512 hp & 488 tq with no bolt ons. I have an intake & DPs sitting Here in boxes from TapOut tuning. I gotta find a shop as my back cant handle the bending anymore. Tried to install new plugs this weekend & got 30 min into disassembly & my back made me reconsider Suicide!
Keep up the great content bro.

I literally just bought a 2016 ATS-V last week. I agree with all the points you made. It's a very underrated car and breaks the rear traction at 16 psi in 5th gear going 90 mph. stock. Can't wait to upgrade this thing even further.
@@boywonderrr71 glad you’re still with us .
Saab 93 aero 2.8t v6 same motor in the Cadillac srx
These were designed with the sole purpose of being better than the M3. Unfortunately not many people shopping for a BMW are going to consider a Cadillac, especially when you consider brand reputation and interior quality. The ATS-V is definitely a fantastic and super underrated car.
Fortunatly people are noticing the CT4-V
I just bought a 128i and while I LOVE it, I would MUCH rather have the ATS-V.
Because BMW people are boneheaded and stuck on their brand recognition. People who would rather have a BMW only care about the status of driving a BMW. They’re junk as hell but it’s all about the look lol
@@Brock_Landers yeah no shit, you bought the cheapest model from the cheapest series of cars BMW makes compared to a high end car from cadillac. not even a close comparison.
@Robert Keeton bmw sucks, mercedes sux, audi suxXx.
That ATS-V comes stock with a forged crankshaft and pistons, titanium connecting rods and valves as well as a bunch of other stuff like better oil squirters etc. Would love to own one.
Main bearing and rod bearings give up around 700hp
@@catchr7bluedevil bmws usually give out around stock give or take
IMO the motor was more valuable than the car itself. I modern work of art.👌
@B1u3 well no shit. How much hp do you want the gm v6 to shell out before it blows up
@@alwaysdriven right lmao
Finally, some notoriety for these platforms and GM's V6. I consider myself an enthusiast for a lot of Cadillac/Pontiac/Buick stuff and have been stoked with the reviews recently!
Why? GM's 3.6 is notoriously terrible. From the Camaro to the Acadia it's a massive pile of crap.
And? What?
I have the CTS V sport which uses this engine , great power train !
@@InsaneBimmer for modding maybe but one of their most reliable engines after they fixed it's timing chain issues in 2012, shit I've been flooring my v6 since brand new and it's at 112,000 miles now with 0 issues even with bolt ons
@InsaneBimmer this isn't just any GM 3.6... its the lf4 lol. It's only in the ATSV, it's not a cross platform motor... the chassis and some select things are cross platform, between other performance platforms by GM... but all modern, nothing was reused from 1980 like the hellcats.
Glad you came around to the ATS-V platform and quite enjoy it! I own a '17 ATS-V manual sedan and absolutely love everything about it! I have ZZP downpipes and cold air intake, Throttle body, and Schmidt 93 tune. I got a buddy running 9s at the 1/4 with a few bolt-ons and Schmidt E-tune in an Auto sedan ATS-V! These cars are nuts!! Great video. 👌
Yeah a buddy of mine told you the atsv runs 9s with bolt ons. And I toldmy self I'm putting money into the wrong platform
@@bawlout9367 Yea can definitely find these ATS-Vs running 9s and 8s on CZcams. Unicorn 🦄 cars!
I was waiting to see Schmidt tuning comment lol I owned a 16’ auto
@@johnymakarov6618 Right, that would be funny. Crazy, I only live a few miles away from him. He does work on my car, infact I'm taking it to him this week. You miss your V?
I have Justin's tune on my v-sport. Im jealous of your ats-v. Great job Jay!
Gm's chassis & suspension engineers have been working magic for the past decade or so. Especially paired with mag ride, theyve created so many fantastic drivers cars/track cars with world-beating lap times, skidpad grip, & driver feedback/engagement. The 2nd-3rd gen ctsv's, Atsv's, the Blackwings, 5th gen camaro z/28, 6th gen SS 1le & Zl1 1le.. c6, c7, c8 vettes (especially GS, z06 & zr1's), and the chevy SS (although Holden may deserve the credit for that one).
Right now my ATS V is sitting at 500WHP on 91, throw sum E in her and shes at 560-570 ish WHP. This is so insane cause I have 2 mods other then the tune literally, downpipes and a intake which isnt even required. I love this car
As an owner of an ATS and a CT5 (also had a CTS) the ATS is definitely the "nimble" one. I prefer the CT5 due to being more roomy, but the ATS is definitely something special. Love both cars.
yep thats why they used it as a gt3 car
I really like that exhaust note. It's unique. It kind of has the howl of a Nissan V6, but also has that deeper growl like an old inline 6.
👌 Couldnt have said it better myself
Not all exhausts have it. This ZZP exhaust sounds great.
I always loved these cars after seeing them at a show. Started looking into them back when they were out, and there were some rumors that the engine was detuned from the factory to not compete with with CTS-V. There were also rumors of like a V+ model, but that never happened obviously. Always loved these things!
These are probably my favorite Cadillac. I'd happily have one.
AWSOME video. I love that you are showing how awesome of a company ZZP is.
The ATS and CTS V were my fav cars from Cadillac... CT5 Black Wing is a beast of a car... if it were in my budget... tottaly. But the ATS V... has a special place in my heart.
Such an underrated and amazing car
Caddy keeps trying and comes so close.
This one might be a winner ☺️
"Is the ATS-V really necessary?" Was the GNX necessary?! This would have made a great platform for a GNX return.
GM's suspension R&D is far surperior than most OEM's and this vehicle had all the bells and whistles thrown at it. Future classic 100%
I 2nd that. Gm's chassis & suspension engineers have been working magic for the past decade or so. Especially paired with mag ride, theyve created so many fantastic drivers cars/track cars with world-beating lap times, skidpad grip, & driver feedback/engagement. Great video. Glad you got to get your hand in an ATS-V. Downpipes, E85 & tune and 600whp basement 10s car all day long. Love mine! Probably my favorite car I've had to this point.
Great vid! Love seeing more people realize how amazing they are! True gems imo, and pretty rare as only about 4600 ATS-V’s were ever produced. The engine platform actually began with the CTS V-Sport (only 4500 or so ever made as well) as the RWD TT LF3. The LF3 has about little relation to any previous GM High Feature V6. Originally designed over at Opel. They then took the CTS V-Sport’s LF3, and modularly beefed up things like the turbos’ internals from 43mm to 47mm, threw in lighter titanium rods, two extra smaller intercoolers, & batter oil baffling for track purposes, and called it the LF4 for the ATS-V. The only other model to carry this RWD twin turbo LF platform is the new CT4-Blackwing. Interestingly enough, the automatic trans CT4 Blackwing’s rods were reverted back to the LF3 forged rods, while the manual trans CT4-Blackwing kept the lighter titanium rods for quicker inertia availability with the manual gearbox. Ultimately you can swap out the LF3 with the modular LF4 parts fairly seamlessly.
Check out RenickPerformance.com, we happen to be the first & longest running LF3/4 specific parts provider, then check out SchmidtyTuning.com who is the pound for pound most dominant LF3/4 performance tuner. First to get an ATS-V in the 9’s in the 1/4th with only about $1,500 in parts/mods. Fastest 60-130 as well, and many other records. Thanks again for showcasing the platform!! Was great to see!
Btw, the cars coolant reservoir looks to be empty in the engine bay clips! 👀
only around 2,600 were made.
of the coupe I meant
@@meeegaaa_tron4031 yessir, coupes represent a good half or so of the total production. Especially considering they only made the coupe in 2019. Rare breed & gem! 💎
Definitely very underrated car, I have a 2018 ats-v coupe with the 6 speed. I love it.
Lfx ain’t no joke I got one in my 2013 impala that I want to build, I love all the wonky low key GM cars you can build on a budget it’s mint honestly
Nice! You should also do the XLR-V and STS-V. When people hear about Northstar they automatically assume it's a terrible engine not realizing there are different types of Northstar engines. The Northstar LC3(4.4 liter) is very durable engine and often gets tuned by D3. It doesn't carry the flaws of the fwd application, the Northstar LD8(4.6) and L37(4.6) which were in the Seville, Deville, Allante and Eldorado. I think the N* LH2 is also good in lower trim of the XLR and STS.
Great review Bro . I had an ats 2.0 t and loved it . I'm dreaming of the ats-v now .
I’ve got a blue ‘17 sedan with a stick. ZZP intake, Trifecta tune, and PS4S. Had a Corsa exhaust that was waaaaay too drone-y. Had to go back to stock on the exhaust since no one liked riding in it haha. I’ve got about 600 crank HP and it’s an absolutely wonderful daily. No lift shift is one of the coolest features.
Love this car, glad to know all the details, thanks for your videos on all these cool platforms
Over here in australia we still have the old gm 3.6 LY7, basically the first itteration of these engines, the N/A precursor to these from 2006, the stock power from them is only 230hp at the engine and they always had chain issues, crazy how far GM has come using the exact same v6 setup and chain setup, same block, same heads, just seems internally they really stepped up the game
The height your leg went up at 7:18 has me dying laughing love the content David 👌🏻👌🏻🤌🏻
Great review. Looks like a ton of fun. Subbed.
I love that exhaust
Love my ATS-V. I've always been one to get another vehicle after about 6 months or so. I have this car the longest of any and have traded 6 other vehicles in the meantime but I will never get rid of the ATS-V. Can't argue with 35mpg and hunting almost anything else down on the streets.
Another car is like to see you review is the STS-v. It’s a larger sedan with a 4.4 l, 460 hp supercharged v8 and was made sometime during the mid-2000s. I personally think it would be very interesting.
Those are so rare I didn’t even know the car existed until I looked it up
That is probably the rarest V out there! Not many know about that lost gem. That would be an interesting review, hopefully he snags a fast good looking STS-V!
That's another overlooked car
@@Jay_Z. the xlr v would be the rarest out of all of them
@@AHHAgarage That was my other choice as well. Those XLR-Vs are a dime a dozen.
I owned 2 of these and both cars were incredible. It was a close second to the Blackwing that I own as far as being the best car that I have ever owned.
Love my ATS-V. With tuning and some ms109 in the tank went 10.80s on all season tires Switched over to an E40 mix. Went 10.70s and gained 4mph in the quarter. Even took the car to NJMP and had a blast driving the car (even though I suck at driving the twisties). Great car for what it can do for little money.
A 50-60k car ain’t a little money… but it’s an awesome platform
@@mogulme6190 good thing I didn't pay anywhere near that for my car
whats the maintenance and reliability on the ats v? im considering one
@@moistydoooood pretty decent. The V cars aren't like the regular versions. Pretty much a ZL1 but with a TTV6. Just quirky shit goes wrong with them. Biggest things are shit trans fuild from the factory and the intercooler isn't bled well enough.
I always loved the way the ATS-V looked. But I don't think I ever seen one out on the streets before
My GF has a ATSV pushin 515 to the wheel and that car is a riot. I am grateful to drive one of these badass cars she’s got the 8 speed auto. Also it’s fun to see the faces of all the V8 boys when we walk them.
I see one of these all the time on my way to work. All blacked out, it’s a gnarly sleeper
I just started looking at these after I got my Escalade. Think it’s a definite sleeper and a great competitor to European counterparts
One of the sickest sounding twin-turbo 6's. I'd buy it.
I want of of these sooo bad. I love V6’s and this is right up my alley
Worked on one of these and they aren't bad and can make an interesting autox vehicle.
This has one of my favourite engines of all time.
I traded mine in for a ZLE, don't regret the trade but did love the AtsV. It always felt fast and nimble.
Love mine…downpipe,hpfp,lpfp,21%fuel cam and a tune by the best Ats-v tuner Justin Schmidt and I run consistent low 10s full weight still stock turbos
I always thought the SSEI was cool but never payed attention to the ATS-V. Cool car.
Cadillac acoustics giving David the best sound video from inside the caddy cockpit hahaha
I'd get this over a V8 all day. Love the turbo sounds and more import guy than domestic power so TTV6 is God to me lol.
Some people just weird and your one of them
The v8 has a turbo
These are awesome cars one of the few v6 vehicles I would most definitely buy
I rented one of these from turo and that v6 is supppppppper fun. Ngl super underrated car
I had an atsv and it was a blast and a beast. Loved it.
whats the maintenance and reliability on the ats v? im considering one
So I own an E92 M3, love it, put 50k miles on it an somehow it's been the most reliable car I've ever owned. About six months ago, though, a friend was looking to trade his SQ5 for a 2017 M2 and I just couldn't have him commit until he drove a manual ATS-V coupe. So he did. And subsequently bought the Cadillac on sight. These cars, or really anything on the Alpha platform for that matter, are so, so good and are hands down the most underrated performance cars of the last decade.
I only brought up my M3 to mention that GM benchmarked the E9X for this chassis and calculated how to, "make a better E9X. As other commenters have, that GM specifically designed this car to beat the M3...and they did. It handles better than an F80 M3, it's a better daily than an F80, the ATS-V gets surprisingly good fuel economy, but at the same time the damn thing RIPS. Sure, maybe the interior isn't 5000% on par with a BMW, but it's close enough to be completely okay in my book.
My favorite part about this car has to be ease of service. We've got GM dealerships in the U.S like we've got damn McDonalds, so even if it breaks down in the middle of nowhere, statistically you're never too far from salvation. Unless I can get suckered in on a good deal lifted Cayenne or because I'm a complete moron, a 2011ish Quattroporte GTS: an ATS-V will absolutely be my next car, preferably in sedan form (mostly because they cost way less than a coupe on average).
Love 'em, glad you did too David.
i never knew what this was. nor did i know there was a coupe. but it looks VERY good. wow. and sounds like a gtr that went to a prestigious private school in texas.
I remember these cars were winning races against the premier manufacturers in GT3 races. I still want to own an ATS-V!
I LOVE MINE! Unlocking the race mode and launch control was SUCH a surprise 😅
I got the 16' 6speed sedan a couple years ago.
When I first saw it at the dealership, I didn't know there was a v trim for ats and now this car is my baby forever.
Nice to see this getting views, I always thought it was insane how these cars got slept on.
whats the maintenance and reliability on the ats v? im considering one
@@moistydoooood well with this v6 you most definitely want to be on top of your oil change. Only thing it really asks for. My verson of this motor runs mobile 1 0-40 motor is very reliable and in that atv has some better things in that motor vs my 2.8 turbo version. Its Why these motors failed in the srx was not completely doing their services as they went cheap on the valve covers and the ventilation was not good. Causing one side to gum up and timing chain would go along with the motor. never go by oil life the car tells you.
@@moistydoooood Sorry it took me a while to see this. I think the car is a great investment, it holds value really well.
The only problem I ever had was a radiator relay go out at about 30k miles. the dealership went ahead and replaced a lot of my cooling setup including radiator/fan since I had warranty coverage. Since then, I haven't had a single problem with it. This car has one of the best manual transmissions out there, I recommend looking for a 6speed if you're still in the market.
@@kobe5828would you buy a manual AtsV or a ct4v blackwing? I'm leaning ATS V so I can save a lot of money.
There is a used one for sale at a dealership I drive by every day. I had to test drive it one say. I love it! Sure as hell, I wish I had the money for it.
My dream car. Was so close to buying one back in 2018 when u could find low mile one for 33-42k. Now they are 60k plus miles for 45-50
Same here. Wish I’d just pulled the trigger back then because I don’t think vehicle prices are ever coming back down.
@@mogulme6190 yea same smh.
Dude I totally cross shopped a manual ATSV before buying my f80 M3, might have owned one if a white sedan with the carbon package and 3 pedals was available near me
One thing about Cadillac is always the suspension probably the best just behind 3 o 4 cars
I have the base model with the 2.0 engine. Love my car and cant imagine how much more fun it will be with this engine in it!
I used to go to zzp for my cobalt ss supercharge . They have awsome parts and great to deal with
Almost all of Cadillac's sport tuned vehicles are slept on. The ATS-V is no exception.
What I don't understand is how people scoffed at the twin turbo V6 in these, and in other cars like the Taurus SHO/Flex, yet they act like a similar powertrain in a KIA is like the second coming. GM has made powerful boosted V6's for a long time. The ATS-V was always lauded as the one that handles, but I think people found the interior cabin space was lacking, so they ended up looking elsewhere.
These cars, even bone-stock still earn street cred from people who know what they are. Glad to see and hear that a lot of Domestic platforms are winning you over David!
Cadillac has made some gems in recent years
We rented ats back in 2016 , i loved how chassyyy was balance & car was soo funn to drive , i wanted to buy one but parts were pain to get in our country & too expensive
Great video & presentation. If i had that kind of play money I might consider checking it out.
one of cadillacs last gems. Now gone forever
There is another car from Cadillac that most people totally slept on is the CTS V Sport. Cadillac produced over 4400 of them between 2014 - 2019 and it also has a twin turbo V6.
Continuously hear nothing but good things about these cadi’s
as long as it makes good power it gets two thumbs up from me 👍👍
This car is undeniably awesome
Regal GS ('12 - '17) review next? Would love to see your thoughts on them. I have a nearly stock one if you're ever up in Ohio.
Man this is something I am really considering purchasing in the future. I am currently still driving around in my 2006 Chevy Cobalt SS Supercharged (I am the original owner) and it's time to get something new.
Wow! I just upgraded from my base Chevy Cobalt LT (139,400 miles) to an ATS Premium Luxury coupe. I was lucky enough to find a 2018 with only 9600 miles on it. It's fun!
I want that turbo in my Lacrosse! Sleeper dreams!
this was fun to watch but a nice exterior fly by would've been a great addition to the video to top it off!
This may be a dumb question but I have a 09 cts base sedan... can I throw this engine from the video in my car with the same twin turbo setup.. or can I twin turbo the engine that comes in my cts ?? Also do the seats 💺 match up on all Cadillas if I use the mounting bracket off this same car to put in my 09 cts ....(sorry if that's alot..my engine locked up and i have to replace it anyway soooo...)
I liked this one from the start. Can't afford the 5V Blackwing, so I'll look for one of these in 4dr, 8sp auto and do the ZZP tune.
Thx
The flat foot shifting, in a Cadillac, is insane!
Hey man, I love your video? Lots of car enthusiasts are doing their favorite cars of 2022. I really value your opinion. What are the funniest cars to drive of 2022?
it honestly sounds pretty good
Had a 3.5 ATS. Best handling I ever experienced and I drive BMWs.
I loved driving these at work
Love these cars
I have seen the (CTV Blackwing) the one painted “light blue” I like that one too!
The ATS-V is also a really reliable car for the money. The ats 2.0t have there share of problems but the ats-v are never seen in cadillac shops unless it's for routine Maintenance
This is very true ( Im a tec in the service department)
Pretty impressive numbers. I have a 2014 bolt on ctsv and only made 550 to the wheels.
I'm making 550whp in my ATS-V on 93 octane tune. I could do ethanol and crank that bad girl up another 80-90whp but I'm content where I'm at. Nice numbers on your CTS-V, conservative but fun!
I still love those CTS-V2'S more than a lot of new cars. Especially the sedan & wagons with a manual🙌. They still look great inside and out 10+years later.. id love to own one someday
Extremely slept on, under appreciated cars. I have a M6 ATS-V coupe that I am selling simply because I want to get back into a C6z which I previously owned. Otherwise I’d keep it without a doubt. These are extremely hard to find as well. Yours sounds insane with the mods as well. More people are starting to learn about these.
whats the maintenance and reliability on the ats v? im considering one
@@moistydoooood maintenance and reliability is great
@@moistydoooood they are reliable, maintenance isn’t much either. I do know the early year automatics had issues with shifting from 1 to 2 but that could be fixed easily by having the transmission fluid changed to the newly recommended one. The 2016s entertainment (CUE) system was also prone to failure either by just completely stopping or getting damaged from the heat.
i got a cadillac cts (3.6l v6) what's the most horsepower I can/should put on it without destroying it and/or replacing everything.
Makes perfect sense. The standard of luxury yes but also winner of lemans and several racing circuits. Built for it but we aint in a hurry. Its a cadillac dammit!
Man these are really fast, i raced one in my integra that made 500whp with the same mods as this car on the video and it was neck to neck, where i race a zl1 camaro and i absolutely destroyed him
Zl1 was definitely driver mode
My uncle has had one when they were new and all he did was a tune and these things are insanely fast 😅
I got a 2002 z28 with full bolt on and I raced my buddy in his dads bone stock was nuts .
What gauge pillar pod is that? I need one for my ats v
Yea these engines are defiantly no joke and are heavily slept on through the car community, I have a very similar engine in my 9-3 aero. Main differences being displacement, and my 9-3 is single turbo. For sure a tried and true engine with big potential. And to me personally one of the better sounding v6s
What v6 is in your Saab? I have a 6th gen v6 camaro and that's the lgx v6, but I don't know much about Saabs
@@chriscole4717 Its the 2.8L turbo v6, the b284 or also known as the LP9. the same basic design just much older and smaller lol
I think a cts vsport review would be cool too, sleeper like the taurus sho
I like to view this car as the successor of the Grand National
There were actually rumors at one time that Cadillac/GM were going to do an ATS-V+ which was going to have the LS7 in it. Kind of like an extension of the z/28 5th gen.
If you ever come down to San Antonio, I have a HR swapped Nissan Altima SE-R automatic with optional 5spd “sportmode” 😂 kind of a funny swap having the automatic rather than the manual
Damn that shits nice
That thing is an animal!! 🤙🏻
Can't wait till we see an upgraded CT4 blackwing video
ZZP is really impressing me.. they ars doing some crazy things.
