Yes! This is arguably one of the most important scenes they could have added in the finale. It shows us that the "Kraken" is yet another facade/persona that Ed is putting on. The guards are put back up in a way that he thinks will protect his heart from being hurt again; in the only way he knows how, except in an amplified version because he's now experienced love and loss for what is likely the first time.

Stede feels like a lighthouse. I think he’s worried that if they ran away together, Ed would crash on his rocks.
Mary's speech over Stede rowing out, finally having found his freedom... It's so powerful. A wonderful end to both their character arcs for this season. I'm so glad the show didn't burn bridges between Stede and Mary and instead gave them both a chance at finding their own happiness
This is so romantic it hurts, and Stede being so ready and sure vs. Ed weeping is amazing, and in the middle of it, "This is how Stede would have wanted to go" - mauled by a leopard, run over, and then flattened by a piano. Chef's kiss. 😙👌

Can somebody please make a 'Stede Is A Badass' compilation? I've been looking for one, and none seem to exist. I just want to see him telling Calico Jack to get off his ship, him pulling a knife on Doug, and him coming to save his crew in a tiny rowboat, plus any other moments anyone can think of. Every time he stands up for someone, or himself.
Saw an interview with David Jenkins, Taika and Rhys in which they talked about the final scene with Stede rowing away on his own. It was a small crew at the end of the day, outdoors, mainly just the three of them. Jenkins said it was a bit like making a student film, and Taika said he remembered helping Rhys into the boat :)
I hope season 2 has them get back together. I know their real life history and how they both die around the same time, but however the show ends eventually, it better make their ship (pun intended) sail again.
They’ve said they don’t really plan to have it be the same exact way since taika himself said that Blackbeard in the tv series for example is indigenous so they can go a different route if they wanted to fortunately
one of my thoughts for season 3 is that there will be a situation in which they presumably die but actually sail off into the sunset to enjoy retirement

i just love that ed, despite his violent nature, is very emotional and compassionate inside. i think we will be a little bit deprived of that side of him in s2 but at least we saw that he doesn't really hate stede he's just heartbroken. i just cant wait for october but at the same time im scared what will happen between those two.
I'm actually fairly surprised that Blackbeard left Roach behind. Doctors and cooks were both purportedly very valuable finds as far as crew members were concerned, and Roach was both. And likely a pretty good cook at that, knowing Stede's tastes. Though I guess, maybe that's why Blackbeard wanted him gone. Too many memories of eating Roach's fine food with the guy who broke his heart. : /
I feel like there must be some strategy behind Ed's choice to just keep Jim and Frenchie (because he is such a great strategizer), but I haven't been able to figure out what it is. This is kind of dark, but maybe he's low-key hoping to get assassinated by Jim? But I don't know what he wants with Frenchie.
It seems like he literally just wanted him to sew a new bit onto his flag. As for killing Lucius and kidnapping Jim, maybe he wanted to break up the other couples out of spite.
I know he kept Frenchie bc they're friends. He was nice to him during the party and they've had a few other friendly interactions as well. Jim's a trained assassin so that makes sense. The Roach question is a good one. Logically it makes sense. But I think he saw him as kinda bumbly and he didn't want that energy in his new badass, goth crew.
