- Thanks for checking out our Eminem reaction. We didn't know what to think when we listened to White America. At the very least, it's an interesting look into Eminem's mind. Is this song a joke as Em eluded to at the end, or was he being serious?

"What's TRL?"
Excuse me while I go check myself into a nursing home.
Damn it made me feel extra old
It's weird because I don't look alot older than some of these reactors, but I am older clearly. It's strange af
I'm sitting here going, "REALLY?!?!?!?"
Look I ain't old (Just turned 35 yesterday) but TRL? Really?!?!?!? Come on now!
Carson Daily just sprouted another gray hair lol more of mine fell out...
Lmao.. so true.. am I that damn old? Guess so
What he meant is politicians didn't care about kids in Harlem hearing "bad" lyrics, but as soon as little Suzie in Boston hears it they started calling hearings and shit.
I think it has a lot to do with culture too. White and black culture don’t really over lap. Unless it’s a white growing up in black neighborhoods, or black growing up in a white neighborhood. And of course parents play a big role.
Harlem has always been pretty much synonymous with "black", so I think part of what he was getting at was that white suburban parents were fine with the negative stereotypes within hip-hop (& gangsta rap back then) being attributed to black people, but Em being white opened the door to a much larger mainstream audience & the culture was now starting to hit a little too close to home. As a teen in the '90s (class of 94), all we listened to was rap/hip-hop, but our parents pretty much had no idea... Eminem's mainstream visibility & popularity couldn't be hidden.
yea he calling them out on the hipocrisy
Yeah and Boston is notorious for it's racism despite being so close to so many largely black communities and cultures.
They weren't trying to stop them from making the kind of music they wanted to hear ( freedom of speech), but didn't care for their kids to listen and emulate which could lead to poor decision making ie drugs, and unruly behavior. No different than parents not wanting their kids listening to KISS the rock band
I felt so fucken old when she said, " what's TRL "
Same haha
Haha, same here
I literally burst out laughing when they said that. TRL was THE show to watch in the late 90's and early 2000's for teenagers
Yuup we old
I automatically assumed they had no idea what TRL was is they didnt react when he said the line.
Brad & Lex: What's TRL?
Me: And I took that personally
Same, the good ol' days when MTV played music.
When they said that, I was instantly thinking “crap. I’m old. I remember MTV before TRL was ever a thing.”
I bet they never experienced mtv spring break, ahh man they look near my age but I guess I’m somehow older lol
I feel attacked with my 41 year old 22 year long Stan ass 😂😂
Lol 😂 what’s trl
TRL= Total Request Live...was an MTV show where they would often bring artists on...hosted by Carson Daly.
Generally speaking I go through my day to day life feeling like I’m the age I’ve always been. Every now and then something really simple makes me realize I’m not young anymore lol
They would also show 10 top videos of the week
Oh my... way to make us feel old Brad & Lex. I forget sometimes how old I'm getting, and I'm only 45.
asked what is trl? Omg that really made me feel old. Used to watch every day. Music countdown on MTV back in day. When MTV used to play music.
I think the weird part is that wasn't just a show it was part of our lives and now full grown adults don't even know what it is.
He wasn’t talking about drugs when he said he would sell half he is talking about record sales
Come on right. DRUG DEALER?! Dude..hes a RAPPER
He's definitely no drug dealer maybe a customer in the past but not a dealer
@@84CrazyWhiteboy To be fair no rappers are drug dealers lol. That would be horrible for bussiness. Its fun to dress up and play hood though.
See how much modern rap has brainwashed people.
These people just dont get it🤣🤣
The TRL question really hurt my heart. Fuck, I'm old.
Edit: as for Eminem getting you suspended from school, not really. It may sound fucking insane today, but in the late 90s/early 2000s you could basically say "faggot" openly with no issue. It was on comedy shows, pro wrestling, Howard Stern radio show, etc all the time.
Fucking same. Not like this.
you‘re not they just uncultured
The "F-word" was largely disassociated from gay people where I grew up. It was basically a synonym for someone being lame or being a jerk. Same as how 'Gay' used to be synonymous with 'Lame'. I remember it took a genuine effort to remove it from my vocabulary because it was so ingrained for so long.
Same here. When I was a kid those words were never turned toward a gay person, they were used to "stupid" friends or towards something that we felt was ridiculous.
I also had to make this change. It is the way.
@UCpae6bn-TlkVvFjle7he0wg the word gay is used as insult too especially at school, the f word it’s just “stronger”
@@brandonhall5615 even though i dont like homosexuality i dont go around calling them names
To us gay people, it was never separated. It's been spit at us with anger, and following threats of violence. You don't have to care about that I don't give a fuck, but it was only "disassociated" because it was never about degrading someone like yourself.
"If I was black, I would have sold half" was him admitting, for his talent, he wouldn't have been as successful if he was black. Blacks were the major consumers of rap music in his day. The fact he was white (relatable to white people) meant he blew up in sales because any white that liked rap would favor him over black artists, because he is more relatable to them. - Never mind, I typed that while the video was paused, but Brad was spot on.
Side note: My friend's toddler learned the b word from Eminem because I was listening to it while babysitting. His parents were shocked and didn't understand how he picked up a word like that, but he latched onto it and loved the word. What we take in really does affect how we are as people, just not in quite the same ways or extremes as society wants us to believe.
Also, the "I'm just playing, America" part at the end always felt like how people say, "No offense, but.." It was meant to slap, but he had to add that at the end to get on the radio.
Are you a Eminem fan? Because I am…
My problem with this line of thinking is he wasn't the first major white rapper and he wasn't the last. None have been anywhere near as big.
The evidence suggest Eminem was just more talented than the others, if it was just being white why didn't Vanilla Ice become the major sensation?
I suppose you could speculate, as Eminem does, that the Dr Dre seal of approval made a difference, but then isn't this a black man's approval and not his skin color?
I just don't see how the racial theory of increased sales survives basic logic.
I think the reality is the combination of talent and Dre made Eminem as big as he is. There are surely other rappers who were extremely talented that never got the recognition Em did, but this is the same phenomenon we see in hollywood where talented actors/actresses are constantly ground up and washed out by a machine where who you know is often more important than how talented you are.
We definitely cannot say race didn't play a role, it probably did, but I think the idea that we could conclude it was THE major factor is patently absurd.
I think when he's talking about Harlem vs Boston that he means that's when the government had a problem. It wasn't an issue when rap was popular on black radio, but when it hit white radio, that's when everyone clamored for stickers and censorship.
I think he´s basically saying the big shots don´t care about the black community. Like they gave no shit about all the problems in the black community, but as soon as it affected the white community, people in power started caring, because NOW it affected them and their kids.
I’m pretty sure he’s speaking specifically to the racism found in Boston. He chose Boston specifically for a being a racially divided city. White parents didn’t give a shit about rap music til “it bothered the fathers of daughters starting to blossom”
Sheltering kids from what is inevitable makes them unprepared for the reality of the world. Parents are the ones that need to teach their children about respect, discipline, consideration and compassion towards others. If they have the proper foundation to follow, they will know difference between right and wrong. The parents should want to be the #1 Role Models for their children, not be replaced by Eminem or any artist. EM is the epitome of freedom of speech on display...🔺🔺🔺
Half in referring to record sells. He was backed by Dre and had crossover appeal to white America.
@Giff Trav What? He's literally explaining that if he wasn't white he wouldn't have sold as much. He's being the opposite of arrogant. Which is what I think you meant
Brother is losing his chick to Shady in front of all of us in slow motion. Rip. amd respect for handling it like a man. Haha
😂😂😭
C'mon now, loving music/artists is very different from loving your partner
I was laughing when she said "I think we've overhinking this". She was spot on !
Overthinking or just plain stupid?
They looking for gold in the desert. You might find it...but
I love Eminem. He keeps it real, even if i don't always agree with his politics. My dad is 61 and loves Eminem, and we also are white and live in Boston. lol!
Are you a Eminem fan? Because I am…
You two have the best and deepest conversations about eminem lyrics and i love it so much!
If you enjoy a good lyrical breakdown, Knox Hill is really excellent.
This song brings back a lot of memories from my time in Iraq in the gulf war. I bought and listened to this CD in Iraq and listened to this nearly everyday. A lot of people I knew in the Army listened to this song. Even though Eminem was against the war in Iraq he was actually very supportive to us Veterans.
Are you a Eminem fan? Because I am…
Of course as we shouldn
Me too! I was listening to this in Mosul.
Wasn’t gulf war in the early 90s?
@SoporVK You are talking about Operation Desert Storm which was in the 90's. I was in Operation Iraq Freedom in 2004-2005. I have pictures of it on my channel if you are really interested.
I love the interview where Eminem says if there is a couple swear words he would Haley listen (cause she is gonna hear it anyways), but if there is a lot he won’t. He said he makes her a clean version to listen to. He raised 3 daughters (2 adopted) and his little brother. They are all doing awesome so….
He said “I’m just playing America you know I love you.” At the end because he was calling America a bitch. At the end of about a dozen of his songs he says some version of “I’m just playing bitches, you know I love you.” Similar to how he said it to Diddy at the end of killshot. Barz
Gang gang!!!!!!!! TRL was a show on MTV. I beleive they counted down top tracks of the day or something like that. I remember watching it but it was a long time ago.
Early 2000's, Carson Daily hosted, he also interviewed Celebrities of the day.
Doesn’t feel that long ago… but I guess it’s been like 20 yrs… do they still do Spring Break? That was crazy shit
The end is what he always ends with when hes being sarcastic.... Whether it im just playing america you know i love you, im just playing women you know i love you, or im just playing puffy you know i love you.... He always ends his sarcastic songs with this... Its kindof like a backhanded apology
Are you a Eminem fan? Because I am…
The animated music video brings the song to life
TES is such a great short stories combined.
Also you two be having serious discussion and looks so chill vibing with the music at the same time. How you try to understand the situations in these songs without being prejudice, it's a nice thing to see on internet.
Politicians have had a problem with “controversial” lyrics since the 80’s. Tipper Gore spearheaded the Parental Advisory label after her kid listened to Prince’s Darling Nikki.
It's not politicians, it's W people. Whites didn't allow rap on radio stations n MTV until YO MTV raps 88-95 n that was on at midnight in 80's-90's.
@@chrissmith6774 It’s not just rap that has been targeted. It was any song with “controversial” lyrics. Frank Zappa, John Denver and Dee Snider testified at the hearings.
The Parents Music Resource Center (PMRC) grew out of the National PTA’s campaign. As a way to get other concerned parents on board, the organization mailed letters to influential people nationwide. That’s how Susan Baker, married to Secretary of the Treasury James A. Baker III, ended up hearing songs that would later be known as the “Filthy Fifteen.” Songs like Mercyful Fate’s “Into the Coven” (rated “O” for reference to the occult); Twisted Sister’s “We’re Not Gonna Take It” (“V” for violence); Black Sabbath’s “Trashed” (“D/A” for drug/alcohol reference); and Prince’s “Darling Nikki,” which earned Prince one “X”-rated spot on the list (his song “Sugar Walls,” performed by Sheena Easton, also got an X)

You got some smart approaches to this one, best reaction ive seen so far, even if its been two years now, love it! keep up the analytical and critical thinking of yours! Many greetings from germany ♥
“what’s trl” literally killed me LMAO i feel so old
He was talking to the United States government who at the time were literally trying to censor him and stop him from putting out music. He even calls out Lynne Cheney and Tipper Gore. I don't know if you noticed but at the end when he says "burn the flag" the word "flag" is censored. They also censored I'm Back and I think a few other songs. Look up "Freest of Speech".
Espacially tipper... she was part of the pmrc who always tried to censor and ban music. They are responsible for 2 live crew getting banned way before em.
You are amazing Lex! You pick up on so much just from the first listen. And you're so humble 🙏🏻❤

TRL- Total Request Live hosted by Carson Daley. Came on MTV back in the day.

This song is more deep than we think.
Genius Eminem.
Portugal here for the Goat Eminem always since day one and forever. Thanks for reacting. Salutes.
Eminem is just raw and not sugar coating at all since day one and that's what people love from him.
I was 12 and this was the first cd I ever bought on my own. It was a big deal. I was with my mother and grandmother. They didn’t know what it was but my gram listened to square dance on the way home and she laughed. I couldn’t believe I got to keep it.

I still remember a skit on Nickelodeon called "T.R.YELL" and the host couldn't get a word in edgewise without being yelled over top of from the crowd 🤣
This was pre-internet and it was much easier for music to be sensored and they could control what kids were seeing. Even the hip-hop we got to listen to we didnt really relate to until he came along.
Also, now as a parent our perspective has been that we are not able to keep our kids from being exposed to things. They will always find it on the internet or through a friend. We just talk to them about all of it and hope they make the right choices.
What a beautiful couple of people, innocent, and very sheltered in music. I truly love ya'll.

2:10 god... am I that old!? lol... TRL: Total Request Live, was a music video show on MTV. Original run was in the late 90's and 2000s.
He was saying it wasn't a problem in Harlem but in Boston it bothered some fathers who's daughter's were starting to blossom. He's making a point that the government wouldn't care if a black community especially a redlined one like Harlem the was created by democrats and a democratic president but if a rich white continue like a suburb in Boston or Connecticut than the government would be more likely listen to their complaints. Eminem was the first person i can think of that people who were offended by his lyrics tried to "cancel" someone and it backfired very badly and launched Eminem to the point where everybody that wasn't listening to him then definitely wanted to after the government tried to shut him down. Especially people in a certain age range that have the attitude where if you tell them not to do something, they're gonna do it out of spite. I loved the phase of my life. It got me in some trouble but it opened my eyes to the reality of our world's wicked ways..... (This is meant to be read in a Tom Hardy/Bane/Alfie Solomons accent from Peaky Blinders)
Total request live was on MTV hosted by Carson Daily.
I was born in 91 and i remember when it was "cool" to get bleached hair... this man influenced so much!

I’m 27 and Eminem Show was the first CD (other than *NSYNC lol) that my mom let me have. She was always pretty “rock n roll” but I couldn’t have been 10. This has always been one of my favorites songs from this CD.
Eminem got away with a lot of the things he said, by being like, “I’m just playing.” It was very, na na na na naaa, I’m just saying this to be provocative and I don’t mean it, but yes I do, no I don’t…
I feel like every kid is different and as a parent you have to treat them as so. If they can handle eminem let them listen. If they are one of those kids that thinks movies are real life and reality tv isn't fake they probably shouldn't listen to anything because all music can be influencing. If kids dont understand metaphors or sarcasm they shouldn't listen to eminem or rap or rock and probably not comedy either.
You had to be there when all this was happening.. as a white kid (junior high age) it was wild. Our parents weren’t happy. Lol. We loved it and hip hop reached a new demographic. He tore down so many barriers.. was just wild.
Fine art and guts with talent and a good heart
Uh oh im just playing yall
I’ve seen Eminem live probably about eight times, One of the better rappers live
TRL was a show “total request live” on MTV (music video channel)
> "Whats TRL?"
I understand why you wouldnt know but this still killed me inside.
Having grown up in the 80's, we went through censoring first with Rock/Metal. They thought everything was about worshipping satan, doing drugs, raping and murdering. That is why we have parental advisory labels now, well that and 2 Live crew. Then they had fits over Eminem but we already labels on records so........I say that to say this, I have never believed in censorship, of music or literature. I have never censored what my children listen to or read. If you are raising your children in the right way, what they listen to will not influence them in how they live. If anything, it may just give them a greater insight to what other people are experiencing in their live's or environment.
This is Top 5 Em song for me. I see the whole song as his contribution to the conversation about White Privilege: that he would’ve sold half the records if he was Black, that he goes on TRL (a segment of MTV) and gets lots of hugs because he’s White, etc. He was incredibly progressive for the time, especially as we’ve only started having the conversations about White Privilege within the past 5 or 6 years. This album came out 20 years ago. It’s incredible.
Your energy is awesome lex, Brad you'll have to do rap god by eminem
Always love y'alls reactions!! First off at 37 you got me feeling Hella old with the, what's TRL 😆. Being married for 16 yrs with a 16 yr old and 13 yr old, I feel like the whole exposing this to "kids" that don't grow up in this environment need to be exposed to it. Only when the parents think they're ready for it. Both my kids are at the age that they're like me, listen to all genres and music. My daughter(16) prefers country, son(13) prefers rap but he'd rather listen to Upchurch and folks in that lane because he lives that life. Again, great reaction. Just my 2 cents 😂
CLASSIC SONG FROM A CLASSIC ALBUM!
TRL was a video show on MTV where they would show music videos and do interviews with artists and trl stands for total request live
raised my kids during the 80;s, and 90's I did not censor their choices, but we talked, we just discussed things, same with choosing their friends, I knew the world could not be changed, but how we respond, or understanding is up to us. My kids are responsible adults.
I was raised in the 80-90’s my parental units did not discuss they got just disgusted.
His commentary on censorship was prophetic. Would he criticize the government when there's a (D) next to the president's name instead of an (R)?
Excellent point. I tend to think no.......

@@sjsuismylife There's literally no reason to think Eminem avoids insulting pretty much anyone he feels like at the time. And an important thing is " Eric " is not a generic name. It's refering to the 1999 High school shotting at the time, it was the deadliest high school shooting in U.S. history.
Like politicions/media acused people like Eminem of being the source of changing these kids character.
U should overthink Eminem, he does not say random words, he mean every word he spits.
Also those names in the end "Tipper Gore" etc, are the CEO's of medias in the USA, thus -> " Fuck you with the freedom of speech this "... " will allow you to have " . and also the " replace it with a Parental Advisery Sticker"

Gotta do "Eminem - Business". Really showcases his rhyming game.
The TRL stuff made me feel old.
Smh I cut school to be in the background crowd of the show..lol
I lived before trl was a thing lol I'm ancient!
“What’s trl”. 😆. That’s what everyone watched music videos on in the afternoon back in the day
This one takes me back to me and my friends hiding under the bleachers in high school listening to hip hop on headphones. It was contraband and treated a lot like drugs. You’d get expelled in my high school if caught with this music. Especially, if you were caught with NWA, Tupac, Biggie, etc. It was also around the same time as congress and Tipper Gore’s effort to put “explicit lyrics” warning labels on music and trying to limit access on who could buy music with explicit lyrics. Hence the “f you Tipper Gore” in the lyrics of this tune.
As a suburbanite who was high school/ jr college at the time my experience was that musical offerings were very much fragmented. This was coming off an analogue musical experience (this album was sold as a CD) if it wasn't on the local radio, if your friends didn't have a copy, if the stores chose not to sell a particular album it almost didn't exist. The further a consumer moved away from the prescribed genres for their gender, age, region the more actual work it was to be informed and get access to uncensored versions.
I think this song is more about Hip-hop-cracy and the supposed freedom of speech than anything else. Thanks for your intriguing reactions!
