I love how this song is structured like a good trip. Initially, Angel’s really getting into the swing of things and seems to almost accept his own suffering. But then he comes down and realises just how deep the hole he’s buried himself in is. It’s heartbreaking stuff. Val has got his claws in deep, but I think escape is still possible

I just watched this episode and it's fantastic. Michael Kovach is an amazing voice actor for Angel Dust and Blake Roman is also an amazing voice actor for Angel Dust. I thought no one could fill the role like Michael, but they bloody did it. How does this show keep finding such talented people.

@@NeoNoggie They are very clearly different, to the point that I kind of wish that they didn't attempt to mimic his original voice so that it would feel less like a replacement. Blake is talented, don't get me wrong. Though it doesn't carry the same feeling, and just reminds me of how good and talented actors will get snubbed because of changes in production leadership, and superficial reasonings. If they wanted Michael, they could have made it work. Though they didn't, and it's a real shame.

@@shags2edope No one can be 100% sure, we don't have a clear answer to the behind the scenes politics on why the cast was changed.
The public facts we know is that the original VA, Michael, was offered the chance to 're-audition', which he declined. Which I can see why, as he would be competing against Broadway singers to impress a creative director who is heavily biased towards Broadway performers. For him to audition he would have needed to get a union exemption and... in general my understanding is the logistics were going to be complicated.
The thing is though... Michael is an incredible talent. He is competing against name recognition only, and that is something that large studios favor. Even Viv suffers from the bias of Broadway talent versus indie talent.
The pilot attracted an indie online media presence and developed a cult following. However I feel like it lost steam and credibility with this desire for mainstream recognition and platform. You make a lot of sacrifices when you sell out to big studios, and a part of it has hurt friends and relationships.
I don't know why, but "What's the worst part of this hell? I can only blame myself" hit me hard.

It hits so hard because its an unarguable truth that this situation they are in now could've been avoided. Be it dating, drugs, smoking, alcohol, or picking the easily noticeably worse of the two options, every human has experienced this once in their life. (some worse than others but always a regret they didn't try to be smarter)
Which is why it's funny to see fandom get so much hate from religious people, calling Helluva boss and Hazbin Hote fans devil worshipers... The story never has anything to make us ever think that hell is great and sin is cool. The show just represents the chaos and another perspective of hell through the creator's eyes. And there's always some good moral and self-reflection massage like this going on around. I never found such heartfelt entertainment quite like these series in a while. Haters never know what they miss.😂
Blake Roman actually did really good on this song. He's growing on me as the new Angel Dust VA. The rawness of Blake's voice at the end is just amazing, I get goosebumps every time.

I actually love the change in the last chorus because it almost implies that his tough guy accent is an act/at least some kind of comfort blanket and goes a long way in conveying just how much this is breaking him

For being the new voice, Blake did an amazing job at staying in character the whole time. You can tell it's Angel Dust. It must've been hard forcing himself to voice crack at the end too, props to the team for this one yet again❤

As someone that has to deal with SA every day at work... I really feel this song. I have to put on an act and act like I enjoy it. I can't let me true feelings show or I wouldn't have any work. I'm trapped in a spot where I need money very badly, and I have to be abused by men on the daily to reach my goals. I often drink alcohol to help numb the pain and helps me disassociate from all the terrible things I endure. This song reaches my soul. I am glad that this has been able to be represented so well through media.
My heart goes out to everyone that is stuck in a job where there are used and exploited.

@josephtafur Out of all 3 Vs who are definitely minor antagonists in the show, Valentino is EASILY the worst. The other two had goofy moments and some fun scenes to balance out their evil. In EVERY SCENE with Valentino, he is being impatient, reckless, violent, intrusive, and just plain evil.

what i love about this song is the different lyrics between the two choruses. at first it seems angel is enjoying it and riding on that toxic high, "addicted to this feeling i cant help but swallow". but then he starts acknowledging how it's affecting him, "im choking on the taste and i cant help but swallow". the descent on angel's thoughts and emotions on his situation is well portrayed in this song and blake did such a good job in voicing him!

That's a very good observation! However, I think that if both songs appear in the series, they would probably have Angel Dust singing "Poison" before "Addict", especially for the last line of the song "maybe things wouldn't be so terrible inside this hotel", because there you hear a little hope, while in "Poison" he seems absolutely conformist with the whole situation, even if he's miserable with it

My favorite thing about Angel is how directly addiction is addressed, how it is definitely not a good thing despite how glorious it may be in that moment of high. How you are helpless and always wanting what you know you don’t actually want. Addiction is dangerous and so rarely addressed aside from chemical substances. One can be addicted to so much more than just pills.

This voice is more.. innocent, compared to the previous actor. It's actually perfect for that reason. Irony is one of many ways to add a layer of depth to a character.
between the original pilot, Addict, his official comic, and now this (the song alone and in context) I think Angel is the most REAL in the franchise. if you know his back story, how he's treated in Hell, how Vlad treats him, ugh.... it just breaks my heart seeing him flat out confirm he despises his life and is the least confident behind his façade of overconfidence. Listening to this, I noticed that Blake sounds very different from Michael when he sings whereas he sounded almost exactly alike when speaking in the trailer. That's far from a bad thing. I really like his voice. I see how he blew them away in spite of being much less experienced than the other cast members. He's a real underdog, just like Angel.
I can see how he blew them away too, considering he voices angel
I think that's because Michael needed an autotune in order to sing while also keeping up with the accent which he used on Angel. But here, Blake is fully singing with his voice only, no autotune, thus making it harder to nail Angel's accent but still sounds super close to his normal talkative voice.
I think that goes a long way to explain why a lot of the voices were recast.
I still need more to judge the talking voice, but the singing reminds me more of the guy from Owl City rather than Angel Dust.
A lot of the recasting was done because they weren't part of the A1 Union, not on talent.

But on a different note, everyone commenting or replying how they still prefer Michael Kovach and the pilot cast over the new one just prove how yall don't respect Viv as the creator or the series and how yall have this weird parasocial relationship to the pilot cast.
If yall didn't notice, Hazbin is a MUSICAL THEATRE STYLE SERIES, which means the characters are going to be CONSTANTLY SINGING. In the pilot, Jill Harris and Edward Bosco needed voice doubles to be the characters' singing voices. And even though Bosco sounds great in other contexts (DJ Paranoid's Striker song and Silva Hound's Alastor song), that doesn't mean he has the right voice for the style of singing required for Alastor. Alastor is a jazz singer, that's not Bosco's voice, hence the voice double.
In Addict, Krystal LaPorte didn't sing for Cherry Bomb and needed a voice double as well. This is not convenient nor is it cost effective in a show where the characters are SINGING CONSTANTLY.
The pilot cast were talented voice actors, but they COULD NOT SING (not in character at least). This does NOT DIMINISH THEIR TALENT AS VOICE ACTORS IN ANY WAY.
A24 was not about to pay 2 different actors to play each character, so YES, they needed to be replaced. The new cast are all experienced singers in some shape or form.
Stop painting Viv as this evil witch for replacing the pilot cast when she literally NEEDED TO in order to have the type of show SHE AS THE CREATOR WANTED. Replacing the pilot cast in TV shows is literally so normal in the industry, that's just how it is, because a pilot is just that: a PILOT, a CONCEPT, NOT THE FINAL PRODUCT
GET. OVER IT.
One more edit cause some people keep bringing it up. Yes I am aware that Michael Kovach has sung fairly in other projects. Michael Kovach was allowed to reaudition and for one reason or another he didnt get the role. Tdoes not diminish Michael's talent in any capacity, it just means that he wasn't right for Angel in the long run.
But guess what? All of the casting decisions were made YEAAAARRRSSS AGO. The pilot cast has already moved on from Hazbin. The pilot cast, being PROFESSIONALS, undoubtedly understood why they were replaced with stronger more experienced singers. They've MOVED ON, and you need to move on from them. Michael Kovach and the rest of the pilot cast doesn't need any of you Hazbin pilot purists going to war for them, and they don't need you dragging them back into stupid pointless drama over roles they've *MOVED* *ON* *FROM*
All you Hazbin pilot purists are part of the reason why this fandom is already one of the most toxic fan bases on the internet in YEARS. *SHUT.* *UP.* about the pilot cast. you're ruining the show for the rest of us who are just excited to see this series finally be released after how far Viv and her team have come.

This song in the show, my god, visually it was so so dark and affected me, I wasnt prepared. Its so viscerally wrapped in the hurt and pain, the fake smiles the attempt at making ones self so part of the pain, then those little scenes of seeing him break...I didnt think I would see something so too fucking real in a show like this.

This song is one of the few that actually touched me. It broke my heart because it's so strangely relatable.
I watched the episode, the scenes triggered and broke something in me. I almost cried from flooding memories, that's never happened to me. I'm happy that it triggered that trauma, it made me feel human.
Every time I listen to this song, it breaks my heart further but I love that. I love how this song allows me to feel that guilt, that pain, and the urge to cry while i struggle to heal.
I lost friends trying to heal from the trauma I faced, this song is letting me feel and embrace the tears and want to cry. This might be my new comfort song.

This is why angel dust will always be my favorite. He’s extremely relatable (in certain aspects). This song reminds me of a relationship I was obsessed with/in that was these levels of abusive. Ya keep drinking up the poison bc you’re so hollow, and even afterwards you still are. It’s a disgusting cycle. Fingers crossed our boy can find happiness. ‘Loser baby,’ definitely made things seem less bleak.
NGL I was sad about most of the VA's re-castings for Hazbin, most sad for me was Angel, between the pilot and "Addict" it was hard for me hearing someone else doing Angel for the series....Until I heard Blake do "Poison". The amount of RAW emotion Blake conveys in not just the way he sings, but the way he managed to pull off the last few lines with a subtle but clear understanding of Angel's situation is amazing. I am a trained singer myself and pulling that kind of emotion in a song, while staying in-character and maintaining the voice is VERY HARD TO DO. He has my respect for sure and I have loved him as Angel ever since this episode.

Bruv... When Angel sings, he taps into, arguably, the very soul of humanity.. Like my life is in no means Angel's afterlife, but i still feel it at my core. Angel is the reason I go back to Hazbin Hotel and why I've stuck with it even though it took YEARS to finally get the show going.

Just saw Masquerade, and I wanted to say this episode hit absolutely hard. It was incredibly awful and raw in all the good ways for a good story.
The narrative structures of Hazbin/Helluva songs are always so on point. This one is a perfect representation of Angel's character...the brazen libertine on the outside who doesn't apparently mind that he's a commodity and embraces burning the candle at both ends with an almost pleasurable nihilism. But as the song progresses and the layers peel away we get a look at their deeper self...the person who resents being used up daily and wants something to believe in. SO excited.
This is a fantastic take and I think it's spot on, Angel Dust indeed seems to be the type that outwardly flaunts the love of being used in excess, but it burns away at his soul and slowly erases part of his identity and he just doesn't have the energy to ignore it forever, eventually it will cause him suffering til he's forced to admit it

the more i listen to this song, the more i love it! it throws in these sexual phrases (gulp, choking, swallow, any way you want me, i'll be yours) and the popular high-energy phrase "living like there's no tomorrow," and i waved it away at first because i thought it was just in-character, but now i think that they wanted us to have that initial reaction where we just assume that those lines are only surface level. i think it was on purpose that they used these phrases and flipped them on their head so that they hold different, darker meanings. it might be the only way that angel sees himself, the only way he can communicate where he feels like people will listen, a mask he hides behind, or the only way that he knows how to describe how he's feeling because that's the language he's limited to due to his persona.
the phrases "living like there's no tomorrow" and "any way you want me" are particularly twisted here when put into context. it's such a clever song! all while being incredibly catchy
(edit) i think i've confused some people on what exactly i mean about some of these lines. you can obviously have your own interpretations but here's how i've interpreted it:
"living/wasted like there's no tomorrow": i think it's because he doesn't think there will be a tomorrow, or that he's impulsive and doesn't care about what happens to him. this can either be because of imposter syndrome, fear of what valentino could do to him or his reputation, low self-esteem, or something else, and we don't really know which since the series hasn't come out yet. "living like there's no tomorrow" is often framed in a positive light where partying/drugs are glorified, but here it more so framed as a masked cry for help. the song ends with how he wishes he "had something to live for tomorrow," meaning he wishes that he had purpose or a life outside of his sex work and addictions, maybe wishing that he had deeper connections with people rather than being a toy to them, or how he feels hopeless and doesn't see the point in living this horrible life.
"any way you want me, baby, that't the way you got me. i'll be yours.": this is a common sentiment in love/lust songs but again it takes on a darker meaning here with context. he could either be talking about valentino or his fans, and how he changes himself or puts on a persona/mask and adapts to whatever other people want of him. he feels like he belongs to his demons (valentino, fans, drugs) and that he's helpless to escape. the lyrics in the second verse seem to back these ideas up.
sexual lines like "resist another gulp," and "choking from the taste and i can't help but swallow up" all seem to be referencing his drug addiction but are portrayed as if they were only surface level since they're coming from a very horny demon. he can't seem to stop himself from continuing taking these drugs and it doesn't help that someone (likely valentino) is basically "feeding" it to him, as he repeats over and over. he seems to be very self-aware of the problem but not able to shake its grip on him. he seems to just blame himself, going off of the lines in the second half of the first verse where he says that he should have known, how he knows that valentino is lying to him, and how "i made my choice."
the first lines in the song seem to be setting the stage of what sex work is like for him. maybe he craves real connection but is only tortured with artificial love underneath "flashing lights" (which is probably referring to the flashing light of cameras), and at the end of the day (or his "ruthless nights"), he's left all alone.
so yeah, there's me making an already pretty long comment even longer! i think too much about horny, cartoon demons.

Honestly Angel's arc is perhaps the one I'm most excited for and terrified to see at the same time.
We've seen nothing but breadcrumbs of what their relationship is like from the comic to the Addict video but they convey so much of a journey to unpack and even be shown in lovely fanworks and seeing how amazingly the Fizzarolli and Mammon toxicity was handled and that only had one episode to show in I can't wait to see how the Valentino situation goes.
Also wow, massive applause for Blake Roman for not only giving such an amazing performance as Angel in this song but also giving such a vicseral example of emotion with those last set of lyrics.

I wonder if it's intentional or came that way naturally but you can hear Blake starting a bit on the flat side, like a shy singer. Not raising the voice as much and with similar tone, but then it starts picking up like he's feeling more sure of his voice, getting more into the song, injecting more and more emotion, giving it life and by the end is so full of emotion and heart YOU feel choked up by the words and it's just SO good. I wish it was longer because it feels like it ends when it's just gotten amazing but that only makes me excited for any future songs now!
Edit: Also specially love the bit saying "Yeah, I know it's poison!" because it sounds like he's exasperated of people telling him that and he's acknowledging his awareness while also accepting there's nothing he can do about it.

I see the slight flatness as part of the probable redundantness that comes with his occupation: dealing with scumbags, having to partake in things he may not always enjoy, doing the same thing over and over to please a crowd, probably constantly cycling through burnout. The rawness of his voice as he gradually climbs toward his breaking point is honestly so stunning. It's a shame this song is so short!
