met Bill Guarnere when i was kid, i was so naïve about what they had gone through... seemed to me as my memory recalls it... he was like a grandfather meeting his grandchild for the first time.... just made me feel that special with the way he introduced himself to me. i gave a big hug and asked him to trade his jump wing pins with me. later told me stories of racing kids on his crutches in philly when he returned home from Europe. im just so glad to look back and remember seeing his smile. as i got older i realized what he had endured with so many others. cuts me to the bone to think about it, very bittersweet

I generally quite agree with you, that line always makes me cry... but in my opinion certain lines from Chrenobyl are also among the best :
1/“Every lie we tell incurs a debt to the truth. Sooner or later, that debt is paid.”
2/"Of all the ministers and all the deputies. Entire congregation of obedient fools, they mistakenly sent the one good man."

My dad was also a combat veteran and Airborne Glider trooper. 194th Glider Infantry Regiment, 17th Airborne (the same unit Nixon talked about jumping with when the plane blew up in Episode 9). He fought as a replacement from December 1944 in the Battle of the Bulge, to Operation Varsity right till the end of the war. He also witnessed one of the concentration camp as his unit was involved in liberation. In my entire life, he never spoke of any of his experiences (other than the funny ones) even when I asked him about them. My mother also said he never talked about it except one time at a family gathering where he drank too much. This series helped me to understand a little bit of what he went through and spurred me to research more about his unit so I could know exactly where he was and (some) of what he experienced. Thanks for the great reaction and for honoring our WWII vets.

I read or heard somewhere that the Easy Company vets were reluctant to film the interviews...but Hanks and/or Spielberg spoke with Winters. He made some phone calls and his men rallied and agree to the interviews. Thank you, Major. RIP, Easy Company.

Seeing the end of this episode, the character of Winters talking about their lives after the war, and then to finally see the names associated with the faces of the real veterans, and having watched over 10 episodes the horrors and hardships and selfless struggles they faced - and knowing that these men are just one slice of the millions affected by the war - never fails to make me tear up, despite having seen this series many times. It truly is one of the best, if not THE best show ever made.

When the folks from Hanks’ production company went around the country to interview the veterans, the veterans families and friends would gather. At first , they thought the families were there to see if Tom Hanks or Steven Spielberg there, but they realized pretty quickly that the families largely hadn’t heard any of these stories, and had come to hear the veterans tell them.

The series was based on the book by the historian Stephen Ambrose. He spent hours talking to the survivors, even flying them to Europe.
Ambrose was hired as a technical advisor for Saving Private Ryan. It was there that him and Spielberg started on Band of Brothers.

So glad you watched this series. It is incredible. It's an experience, I feel, that changes you. Another show to check out is The Pacific; it's a very different show, tonally, but is excellent as well. There's also a companion documentary to Band of Brothers that you might want to watch: We Stand Alone Together: The Men of Easy Company.

It was a great reaction series...I look forward to The Pacific and Chernobyl soon. 😁
This episode has some of the very few historical inaccuracies in Band of Brothers. For instance, according to most accounts, including his son's, Liebgott did not go back to San Francisco and drive a cab, he went back to San Fran and became a barber. Also, history records that it was elements of the US 3rd Armored Division that reached Berchtesgaden first, and it was the French 2nd Armored that took the Eagle's Nest. Winters' battalion of the 506th PIR did get to both places very shortly after those units, but was not first in either case.
Also, I appreciate that folks feel like Easy Company should be first in line to go home as soon as the War in Europe was over, but you have to remember that there was still a need for many people to occupy Germany and there was still a fight to be won against Japan. The military needed a system to figure out how fast the troops were going to be sent home and figure out who should get to go first. The Adjusted Service Rating Score gave great weight to people who had dependent children that they needed to get back to supporting, so each child under 18 added 12 points to your score. In addition, the score went up by 5 points for each medal you won (including Purple Hearts) and each "campaign" you participated in....but the bulk of most men's points came from their time in service and their time in service overseas, with each getting 1 point per month. If you think about it, Easy Company was actually pretty far down on the points list because they had less time in service than the units that existed before the war since they formed in 1942, and the fact they did not get to England until September of 1943 put Easy well behind many other soldiers who had been fighting starting in North Africa in November of 1942. ✌💯🖖

Grant apparently lived through the gunshot to the head. He had a slow recovery from what I've been able to look up - with some speech issues after and a partially paralyzed left arm. He settled in San Francisco and owned a little tobacco store.
    He passed away in 1984.

17:37 I guess the Spandau prison, in West Berlin, was a quite complicated place to serve for Ronald Speirs during the cold war times. Apart of the continuous moral, economic, energy and food siege against Berlin by the Soviets, there they were the highest rank members of the III Reich that were not executed at the Nuremberg trials. Especially irritating and annoying was Rudolf Hess, who spent his nights wandering the prison corridors and screaming. He commit suicide in 1987, throwing himself against the electrified prison fence (I still remember the day this event appeared on the tv news)

Wrong about the genesis of BoB. Historian Stephen Ambrose did the legwork and interviews and wrote a non-fiction book, Band of Brothers.
Spielberg/Hanks took that and converted it to the screen. But BoB doesn’t exist without Ambrose.
Also, get to know some history. That war was not just the result of one med, evil man. It also took the Japanese militarists and Stalin’s cooperation with Hitler for it to happen. Not to mention the appeasement from lily-liveried Europeans typifies by British PM, Neville Chamberlain.
In fact, the US had no intentions of fighting the Germans nor Italians. Japan’s attack on US drew those counties into declaring war against US.
