#72: Toro Timecutter mows 5 acres. How long does it take on the zero turn?

  • How long does it take to mow 4.5 acres on the zero turn? And how much gas does it use? I use the Toro TIMECUTTER with 60" deck to find out! I mow the field, which Google Earth says is 4.5 acres or a little more. It ends up taking me just under 2 hours to mow the entire field. I used 1 1/3 tank of gas in the mower. The end results were: a nicely mowed field, and a lot of fun driving the TIMECUTTER at full speed for long distances. The seat was plenty comfortable for most of the field. There were some rough patches where I wished I had the MyRIDE suspension. But the same features I pointed out in my initial review still are appreciated: heavy duty forged deck, adjustable speed ranges, wide front dolly wheels, large gas fill port, quick blade-tip speed for a great cut!

      It was perfect for an experiment. Now I need to know how long and how much diesel it takes to do it on the Deere.

    Another great video! I just ordered the Timecutter 50" MyRide today. My fields are rougher so I won't be able to go that fast but very helpful. Thank you.

    Thank you. That’s good info. Your 4.5 acres is fairly flat, and open. My farm is 5 rolling acres chopped up w/fencing into pastures; with troughs, run-ins, etc… so I expect it will take 50% longer. We’ll see.

    For the sake of comparison, it usually takes me just under 2 hours to mow roughly 4 acres (including 50+ obstacles) on average terrain with my Gravely 60" Pro Turn and it uses about 2.5 gallons of gas (Briggs engine).

      @@PurpleCollarLife It has a couple quirks like any other machine but it’s got the job done for eight years now. Overall, the zero turns just make life easier when it comes to mowing and other yard work. 👍

    What about a 48 walk-behind with jingle wheels? Anyone mow large acreage like that? I have 6 acres with horses, so it only needs mowing 4 to 6 times per year. But I still need to mow it and don’t want to buy a zero turn just for that. I can get a good used 48” walk behind with jingle wheels for $2k. Any thoughts?

    • @PurpleCollarLife
      @PurpleCollarLife  Před rokem

      It would certainly be a great workout to walk up and back 6 acres, 48” at a time. I don’t know what “jingle wheels” are. We’ve mowed this field with a 3 point mower also, behind the tractor. They can be picked up for less than a zero turn mower. And with horses, you likely already have a tractor with 3 point hitch and PTO. That might be a good solution for you. And you’d be able to do 6 foot widths (or 7’) at a time if you have a tractor with enough HP. Ours that we use with the Ford 8N is a KingKutter 5’ (60-inch) finish mower that attaches to the 3 point hitch.

  • @Jasonrcsd
    @Jasonrcsd Před 3 lety +1

    good example! I have 5 acre field/lot that I mow along with 2 1/4 acres that our house sits on. Both are pretty open (no trees, obstacles etc). Would you recommend a zero turn over say a compact tractor? I need to buy something as I've been mowing my 7 acres with a box store John Deere D130 42" mower. It literally takes all weekend (12+ hrs).
    The zero turns would be nice but for another $10-15k I can get a compact tractor that has a mower, loader and forks. Tractor would be used to maintain the driveways, maybe snow removal (i have a RZR w/a blade), planting trees and installing culverts (hopefully a 1 time thing).
    from your experience which way would you go? zero turn and rent equipment for anything else or compact tractor with mid mount mower? thanks! Jason

    • @PurpleCollarLife
      @PurpleCollarLife  Před 3 lety

      Hi Jason,
      I responded to your email, but wanted to answer this on the comments too - it really depends on what you need to get done and what your budget is. Like I said in our 1st Piece of Equipment for Property Owner video: czcams.com/video/aY-v-MqcNWY/video.html A compact tractor with front end loader can do a lot of tasks. But the zero turn as a dedicated mowing machine is great for letting you keep using the tractor just for other tasks.

    • @lucasbenoit7835
      @lucasbenoit7835 Před 3 lety +2

      I have tons of hours on zero turns commercial and homeowner. I use to own a lawn care business. If your a homeowner with acreage you will be much happier with the tractor. It's what I use for my 7+ acres of mowing at my home. The tractor is much more comfortable and has a Diesel engine. It will go 5x the hours of a gas engine.

    • @PurpleCollarLife
      @PurpleCollarLife  Před 3 lety +1

      @@lucasbenoit7835 A diesel engine definitely can be more efficient. However, the diesel powered zero-turn mowers are in a much higher price range than gasoline powered versions. Having had both a tractor for mowing, and a zero turn, I can say that strictly for mowing, I'd rather use a zero turn any day. But for all-around work, a tractor is more versatile. Thanks for watching and commenting, Lucas!

    How much would you charge for a job like that

    • @PurpleCollarLife
      @PurpleCollarLife  Před 2 lety

      It depends on how much time it takes. We don't advertise our rates on our videos- but if you're pricing a job, there's a lot of calculation - time spent, wear and tear on equipment, fuel/gasoline costs. Once you get that figured out - you can come up with a rate per hour, and then figure how long it takes to complete certain size yards (based on square footages, and obstacles, and trimming requirements).

      I have a job to mow 5 acres with my John Deere E140 48" deck. We have had rain here in northwest A.R. for going on 5 days straight. Tomorrow it should clear up and this weekend is awesome looking. I don't know if I will be able to mow this weekend it might still be to wet. But I am also getting Replacement Tire, 20 x 10-8 4PR SU18 Super Lug, WD1056 on my back tires!! I'm stoked to cut all that grass and try out the new tread! Hello. I'm not sure what you're referring to. The field is about 350 feet x 630 feet. That's 220,500 square feet. 5 acres is 217,800 square feet. 840 feet by 840 feet would be more like 16 acres.
