"You don't know me but I'm your brother" .... one of the best opening lines ever!
THIS SHYT IS FIRE right up there with NPG...if u no u know
Word
We need this vibe now in 2023
Straight facts!!!! 💯💯💯💯💯💯
That's so funny that you say that this is a great opening line because I literally just text my friend with that lyric and anybody who you send that to they'll know the song of course if they are of a certain age❤ Michael McDonald vocals are just so awesome and he has such a distinct voice that you can never forget
This is Black American gospel music. No wonder I was attracted to their music as a church raised youngster. Going to see them in concert this year!
No lie, I was introduced to the Doobie Brothers as a little kid thanks to What's Happening. Been a fan ever since.
"Which Doobie you be?" - Raajer Thomas 😂😂
Same here!🙌🏾💯
Same here. 😊
I thought Pat was going to start shouting and dancing with his tambourine. They were taking it to the streets and to Church at the same time.
Who remembers Rerun hiding the tape recorder in his coat? 😂😂
i do! i was born in '76, but the a local station would play reruns of What's Happening. i always remembered the name Doobie Brothers, but i didn't know who they were until I got into Michael McDonald when i was in middle school.
I heard about them through What's Happening but it was years before I realized that Michael McDonald was in the Doobie Brothers. Love them!!
Lol! I do
i am 77 and still remenber it
Right! 😂😂
So 46 years later I'm listening to this masterpiece (and MM is still with us)…Who's arguing with what?! 😍
Check out his interview on Rick Beatos CZcams channel. Great stories and his voice is still phenomenal!!
The most soulful white dude ever! Mike McDonald!~
You better say it
Saint Louis Missouri
Nope. Mose Allison holds that title.
@@fosbury68 That is a Valid OPINION!
@@fosbury68 LOL!Ok I at least give you a tie not the title.
OK. So we know he can write. He can sing. He can play piano. And I am compelled to say, FINE. AS. HELL.
Gina like
This is the hands down the best live version of the song. Skunk nailing the solo at 2:07 + McDonald's gospel outro deem this performance unrivaled.
yes
@@DonDixit Skunk is an absolute BEAST.. One of a kind. Same with Michael.
@ 2:33 when he comes off the solo and plays that transition into the chorus..... Goosebumps, man!
agree 100%!
@@OsageRevival .... exactly! freaking melodic & skillful
Tiran Porter; one of the most underrated bass players you'll. This song is a lesson in groove.
Yep!!!
Absolutely!!!
This tune is as relevant in 2022 as it was when it was released. Michael McDonald one of the greatest voices and piano players I have ever heard.
And 2023
Supremely talented dude, but you need to hear more piano players. Start with Dr. John, then check out Leon Russell and then Ahmad Jamal.
@@orenico96 I have seen Dr. John at minimum 6 times and have a picture of him hanging in my music room which he signed for me. Leon Russell one of the all time greats and Ahmad Jamal a very nice player but in my opinion if you want to talk jazz piano players -- go to cats like Horace Silver, Red Garland, Elmo Hope, Wynton Kelly (there are others), and then the masters Thelonious Monk, Duke Ellington and Sun Ra.
@@JazzMessenger1218 I get it. I just thought it was funny to mention the talented Michael McDonald as one of the "greatest" pianists:) Pop singers-yeah! And I love his piano playing too, but the comment went a little far. It's all good!👍🏼
and is it not sad that when we do it It does not get any play....so called categories and shyt like that there.... PRINCE IS THE GOAT
HE TOOK EVERYBODY TO CHURCH!!!!!!
Yeah!!!! In a way at least.
To the streets, rather.
That's exactly what I said too!!
Lame opinion
Nothing to do with church. It's real life he is talking about.
Jeff Baxter is a guitar genius and this is a rare look at his improvisational skill, just an incredible solo!
He was a pro all the way baby!!
This what caused his hostility with McDonald though.
@@119Agent Never knew of hostility between those two.
@@oranjuly it was the reason he quit the Doobie Brothers.
Ive heard that's not the case any longer...they're good
I'm glad this performance will live forever online. Its incredible.
They are scrubbing a lot of Doobie stuff... And that fantastic performance live with Patti Labelle back in 85-86 got scrubbed. Download these classics while you can... I am regretting it.
That guitar solo.
His GOSPEL chords are slaying me.
AMEN to THAT 😇🙏🏾🙏🏾
He had to go to a black church. There’s no way to imitate that
@@Sparky19124 he grew up in St. Louis. That may have something to do with it too. # I love Michael McDonald.
Bruh, he had those white people bout to stand up singin Amen and Hallelujah at the end LOL... THAT'S SOUL.
they really are!!
Only band I can think of where the live performances were always better than the studio. Michael killed this. Damn he was a genius. Soul, harmony, timing, voice... He had everything
He still is!
Still does
He still is a genius
He ain't dead yet!
he still is !!!!
I'm in my 60's, and Doobie Brothers music always puts a smile on my face. Takes me back to my teens, listening to WLS at our local swimming pool. GODS, I miss the music of those days!!!
Music by great musicians
The Doobie Brothers will be recording a new studio album, with both Tom Johnston and Michael McDonald.
Michael McDonald....pure soul and eye candy!
Hi ,how are you doing today?
Who is still listening to Michael 💞💋 in 2021
How about 2024 ?
Me
The Doobie Brothers we’re supposed to be bigger than the Beetles in my opinion. Michael has such a golden voice.
In my book.
That closing piano bit is amazing
I play the piano, and I can attest to how difficult stuff like that is (I can't do it).
The chord changes smh... I’ll cry tears over this white man when he dies
One of the few groups that sound in concert almost exactly as they do on the album.
Way better live. And that's incredible
And Steely Dan w Mr. McDonald... How ironic...
In the 70s that was not unusual. One of my litmus tests for a true artist is whether the music sounds as good or better live. I believe recordings cannot capture the quality of great artists. The good ones prove that when they step on stage.
Better live. Way better live. You can't say that about too many bands, and you can say it about none of the overproduced garbage that passes for popular music these days.
thanks to Ted Templeman's genius
I was born in '87. My Dad was born in '60. 10/10 wish I could switch places with him. You guys got all of the good music. I was even too young to really be able to see good '90s bands at their prime. My generation's music is fucking terrible and it's only gotten worse.
I'm older and grew up with this music so was very fortunate😊
Keep exploring good music of the 1960s-1990s
I was born in '69, graduated HS in 1987- This music is from when I was a young kid, but it is still some of the most groove-worthy music ever.
Gotta agree with you there.
You can’t beat those vocals! The fact that he’s that good on the keys and in rhythm live is absolutely insane.
"I ain't blind and I don't like what I think I see", good words.
They took it to the streets and then took it to church with this performance.
The entire country needs to be Taking It To the Streets! Rock On!
They Did...they took it to the streets in May & June 2020
GET THEM IN THE HALL OF FAME.
Update: Omg, they were finally inducted in Nov 2020! I was a year and some months behind the times 😅
Wow the musicianship was off the charts. And bands like the doobie brothers were just amazing to listen to. The seventies was an incredible time for listening to music. Because everyone was pushing it forward with great abilities.
They were writing their own music as a BAND and improvising. No huge computer enhancements to make them sound perfect and correct their pitches. They had to get it right on their own.. Todays music is lazy, over-produced, and mostly fake. There are good musicians, but being a good musician does not equate to good music.
Yeah man! Every one of them were very good at what they did and really tight as a group. Great memories for sure!
This is pure gold! Michael was fine as hell back then and what a voice and talent in that gorgeous man!
Makes you think somebody’s mother was a groupie getting slutted out by Mike Mac
so gorgeous..I always hated he wouldn't look up...always wanted to see his beautiful blue eyes. omg, i love that sexy fcking beard. hot!
He still has his voice especially singing with David Pack, in love 😍 🥰 💘 with them
I bet alot of our mom's were lusting back then.
Yes,he was/ still look good! Beautiful soulful voice!! Love those blue eyes!🎶🎵🎶🎶💙💙💙👀
One realizes the luck of having experienced late 20th century music while it was happening and happening it was.
That piano solo has got to be the stuff of the gods
Im sorry but this is just a performance new generations can never replicate sadly. Its depressing music will never reach these heights again...
If they would only take lessons and practice.
@@downbymysinsofficial Ai, autotune, and computer software make it too easy. That is why music lacks soul now.
this is a copy of gospel chords, it can be done again.
@danielleinad88 bud, Gospel chords are played every day at my church. I'm not talking about that. I'm talking about their ability and performance. Their soul and feel. Modern acts just don't have that same soul and groove. The 50s, 60s and 70s were an Era ushered in by classical musicians who evolved, and put in a ton of work as a BAND.. very little electronic input. You really cannot replicate this anymore sadly.
@@JonHop1 touche.
THAT VOICE. Omggggg. Even better than the record.
Yes sir.....he took us to church on that piano!!!!!
Those rich vocals, filled with tons of soul. Michael McDonald....mmmm
Yes, when I first heard him I thought that he was a coloured artist!
misslantana52 Yes indeed!!!
You have great taste in music.😙
“I ain’t blind and I don’t like what I think I see. “ 2020 anthem. 🇺🇸
Tyranny and Authoritarianism is on its way... We will be the next China soon..
an absolute genius on the piano. WOW!
Michael McDonald’s voice is incredible there’s no one that can top him
This is my favorite version of Takin It to The Streets because of solo improvisation from McDonald's talent.
Ahh, when kids had good music to listen to. Those were the days.
The piano at the end was fantastic.
And this song changed everything. A blue-eyed soul singer. So rare. All the songs that followed, All of the collaborations. Michael McDonald has probably collaborated in the writing of more songs than we even know about. Still in awe of his talent.
Only in recent years was his name added to the credits of Van Halen's "I'll Wait". Michael McDonald cowrote the lyrics to that song with David Lee Roth.
He was 25 in this video, what a talent!
Enjoying this in 2022...I love their energy together!
Michael was 25 years old! Amazing.
My God, the first 18 seconds of this is enough to put me away. Talent, power and beauty beyond the scope of the concept!
God gave McDonald many gifts that made room for him.
McDonald is deadly on the piano
It don’t make no sense smh
he's always had imposter syndrome about his keyboard skills, donald fagen once told him he wasn't very good 💀
Taking it to the streets? More like taking it to church!!! Michael and his soulful voice woosah!!!
This is when talent was required to make it big 👍
EACH one amazing artists!
Love these guys 🙋🏻♀️💥👌 🎶
Hi ,how are you doing today?
Come on! Skunk Baxter killing it on the guitar! The best performance of this song
You don’t know me but I’m your brother...... powerful lyrics, still relevant and kick ass music 40 plus years later rightttttt
Pure Magic and that was the Band the Doobie Brothers. From 1973-79 they were right up there with the best of the best 🇺🇸
If Michael invited you to Jam sessions; you would SAY YES in a heartbeat.
Michael with all-dark hair...wow.
Hands down the best live version
Skunk Baxter - nailed that rif
He went out of theme on the second half of his solo. Turned pretty A tonal. Oh well, a little showing off to the untrained ear never hurts. lol
he rocks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hell yea
Good enough to make Eddie Van Halen sulk with jealousy
the depth of emotion in their music touches your heart
And this is the problem with today... No soul or feel...
Michael McDonald's solo (starts at 3:56) in this Sound Stage concert in Chicago, the year before I left Chicago to go to Los Angeles to become a song writer, on the CP80 yamaha piano has been an inspiration to me for my whole life, musically speaking. I have used it to inform so many of my own improvisational riffs. He is a musical genius. God Given talents beyond words. Michael McDonald for President!
When the music mattered. Now we mostly have crap.
Amen! WOW! 2 great solos in this live performance. I could almost see smoke coming out of those strings from Skunk's solo. And Micheal's piano at the end is just beautiful. Nowadays all I can expect is that stupid millennial bird whooping crap that they have to throw in every pop song.
Yes, I agree! Thank you friend!!!
TheAcarch2 My reply went out to you by the way. :-)
Only because at some point you stopped listening...let me guess, somewhere around 30? 35?
@Benny Hill Go back to making puzzles shitting in your pants, grandpa.
Michael blowing my mind on the piano, especially that spectacular finish.
Skunk kills it. Great song. Great vocal. Great band.
Michael McDonald has the most soulful voice ever! Love this song…❤
Still makes me think of Rerun and that tape recorder. LOL
Whatever happened to long-haired, blue eyed rock-n-soul music? Man, I miss this.
Thats deep. I feel you
Who knew 40 years later we'd need these lyrics even more.....who knew?
Our worst fears; cleave unto the music; it will sustain us.
Demetrius LaShawn you got hate in your soul feel sorry for you!
You're a genius.
Some real geniuses on here.
So True!
My favorite of their songs....what a voice, what a group....takes me back...thanks!!❤
Michael was actually takin' us all to church at the end...😊
Love Michael's voice. The boy can sang!!!
The outro underlines just how great a piano player Michael is.
Skunk on guitar!!!
Real music played by real musicians with a solid message!
Phenomenal...this man has a unmistakable voice just amazing and no auto tune here folks...this band in a whole fabulous...🔥🔥🔥
As I listen to this masterpiece I still get goosebumps running up arms hearing this classic. Doobies at their best.
Why does Pat Simmons always look so ridiculously happy? I bet his permanent smile in the studio/on stage is why their music is so lively.
One of the greatest bands of all time. The put rock , funk , pop and soul in one mix. Top self musicians with skunk on guitar Michael mc Donald on vocals and piano.
Amazing, just amazing from an era where it wasn't all about the marketing but the sheer talent, Mr. McDonald on those keys made me realize he was in a zone, just vibing with life and we got a chance to witness what he and Mr. Baxter cooked up. What we saw and listened to was a pop gospel group at their finest. This was beyond belief !!!
His voice is so powerful!
Love his voice just takes you away sometimes!
Shit this is making my bad day go good again.
THE POWER OF MUSIC.
Mondern day song for any time or age. Especially NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Man THIS band was way ahead of their time 💯🔥🔥🔥
When music was real. Michael McDonald is at his best with his amazing piano playing. I could kiss his hands for the music that they create.
SAAAANG IT MIKE! SOULFUL voice!
Great performance. Doobie Brothers rule.
The real beauty of this song to me is Unity. Let's Unify!!!!
Its the Soul...
Skunk rode that fucken guitar best I've ever heard simply put skunk is BAD ASS!
netha soun I swear!! 🙌🏾
Man, Michael - you really ARE takin it to the streets, ain't cha?
Damn they was jamming Skunk is a monster I love to hear him play
This is just so so good. God... Amazing performance. Mike and Skunk in PEAK form.
Man, he is such a good vocalist. And hot, too!
I'm not much for live versions. But Skunk sells this one. That solo gave me chills.
The Bomb....first year of college..me and all my friends..def' on the Doobie Brothers..even my boyfriend at the time. Mr. McDonald could do no wrong! One of the best voices of all time!
Love this era!!!! Real Respectful Music🎶🎶🎶🎶🎤🎤🎤❤ real musicians too!!!👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽💃🏿💃🏿💃🏿💃🏿👊🏽
I wish we had our Rock Bands back. Nothing can compare and i was so fortunate to have all of this music in my home. My older brothers and sisters played and danced around to this music on our stereo. My mom and dad loved music.. We never missed Casey Casam's countdown on Saturday radio, American Bandstand, and Soul Train.. I started high school in 1976 and it was lost in the disco period and Urban Cowboy but I listened to all of it from Boston. The Doobie Brothers. The Eagles .Fleetwood Mac. Charlie Daniels. AC/DC. Aerosmith. 38 Special. Pat Benatar. Supertramp. Night Rangers. The greatest music
Michael is a higher being; God was putting a few musical Healers here, to teach us about love, before it was too late. Notice most of them were born soon after Hiroshima.
"Take this message to my Brother
You will find him everywhere..."💕
Fmin6/G to start a pop song. The good old days.
Michael McDonald just handling his business. Incredible talent. Love the Doobie Brothers
THAT'S THE VOICE!!!
Michael McDonald~ what a great song. Timeless words. Listen up people
Michael McDonald is fine as hell here!
Skunk wearing headphone, rocking back and forth in a chair, playin’ his ASS off!!! So ultra cool.
The guitar is on fire that's a bad boy
Hear him on Donna Summer's "Hot Stuff".
