This is one of the greatest movie scenes of all time. The whistle line is obviously most famous but I think the line, "It's even better when you help!" is one greatest piece of dialog in movie history.

I just watched this movie and other classics from Hollywood's golden age a couple of weeks ago. What I love about this film is that the characters are sexy, sensual, witty and intriguing without being graphic or vulgar. They actually used clever dialogue to create palpable tension. The banter between these two in the film is racy without being trashy. I can't believe Bacall was 19 here.

They don’t need to talk in order for us to catch it but then, the movie by itself have a brilliant dialogue for that time and that combination really worked for this movie and made it timeless. ***** I always thought there was something slightly sinister about that kiss in Rear Window or perhaps it's just a preconceived notion because it was Hitchcock. But it is undeniable that they knew how to film stuff like that back then that all the explicit stuff of today doesn't even come close to.

***** Speaking of Hitchcock there's the memorable, almost three-minute-long kiss between Ingrid Bergman and Cary Grant in Notorious. Of all of Bergman's films, I have always thought this was the one in which she was allowed to be the most overtly sexy. Hollywood had cultivated a pure image for her and Notorious played totally against it.

After 'To Have and Have Not' the public was mad about these two, and The Big Sleep was re-edited by Warner Bros to reflect that on screen chemistry by highlighting them and even shooting a whole new scene (the talk about horse racing). The Big Sleep is one of those rare occasions where studio interference was the best thing that could've happened.

And to balance out your statement a bit, Humphrey was worried about the marriage, being that he was old enough to be her pop, whether it would last. Many people back then speculated it wouldn't. Many people nowadays still speculate it wouldn't, an "old" man marrying a young chick I mean .

    • @SwarthySkinnedOne
      @SwarthySkinnedOne Před 5 lety +6

      @@Shadowhunter82767
She was a Howard Hawks chick. He'd have his young actresses trained to speak with deep and sultry voices. Notice Dalores Moran in this movie, the one who played Hélèn de Bursac, she's also young (about 20 or 21) and pretty with a voice suited for a 35 yrs old female who smoked cigarettes a lil. She's a Howard Hawks gal too. A young gal with a contralto makes her seem mature and grown up for her age. It's masculine in quality and a turn on for many of us men. Gives an impression she's tough and can take care of herself. For many of us men who are weak and pathetic, it can be intimating and unsettling. So for those of us who are sissys ("pussies" in today's degenerate lingo) it's a turn off and we tend to keep a distance from such gals. Enhances our insecurities.

In some ways I think it's more poignant her passing, as it literally is the end of an era. It's hard to think of anyone else from that post war era still with us. We still have Olivia de Havilland although she's arguably the era before Bacall.

I'm 57, so she's not exactly of my era either, but I love old movies, always have, and I've been a huge fan of the Lauren/Bogie team from the first time I saw them as a kid. For any Bacall fans that are missing her voice, I recommend her book "By Myself". (A re-publishing w/ the title "By Myself - And Then Some" was distributed later in her life, but I can't personally attest to the second book - it's gotten rather poor ratings).
HOWEVER, her original book "By Myself" will make you appreciate this woman even more than you already do. It goes into the beginnings of her life & how she managed to end up in show business - it's a brilliant story. AND, of course, she tells about how she met Bogey & the ensuing love story. AND (get this), there is an audio version of this book, with Ms. Bacall herself doing MOST OF the narration!

    Lauren.
I liked listening her and Humphrey in that radio broadcast "Bold Venture". " Sailor" was her name in that. Seemed that program was a combo of Key Largo and this film.
Ann Sheridan was my fav tough chick. The girl with the "Oomph!"

Ummm Yeah!! This is a REAL Film!!! "To Have Or Have Not" (1944) starring Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall (they became an "item" together eventhough he was a lot older than she. Directed by Howard Hawks, based on book written by Ernest Hemingway. Can't get any more REAL than that!!!

Bacall and Bogart, perfect on-screen chemistry. This stuff blows away most of the shit that we've seen on our screens in the last thirty years. Notice that I said 'most' not 'all', just in case you losers want to throw examples at me. Bacall was 19 when she made this.

I have no clue if Hays office still existed in 1944/45.
But this performance of Lauren Bacall, is simply, pure, arousing, HOT SEX!
    WHAT AN ACTRESS!
Although, as we all know, she was married to Bogey!
I am grateful to both of these legends, that gave us inspirations and ideas to DREAM of...
