It's brilliant because it shows what the true currency of underworld dealings is; favours, and connections. Money is useful, yes, but of FAR greater value is having people in important places that you can bend to your will. Vito Corleone was clearly uninterested (and almost insulted) by the constant offers of money. What he REALLY wanted was to have another "follower", another servant that could do his bidding. Because once you've entangled that person in the web of organized crime, it's very, very difficult to escape from. Now that you have something you can hold over their heads as leverage, it becomes ever easier to draw them deeper into your web until they're so enmeshed in the underworld that they cannot escape again.
@@Kringlebeast I can just imagine the cat coming up to Marlon Brando and when the director is like "someone get the cat outta here!" Marlon is like "No! Let it stay."
What I love about this scene is that Vito WANTS to help Bonasera. He understands that he just simply wanted to do it the "right" way and was screwed over by the system. It is when Bonasera views him and his family as nothing more than hired thugs is when Vito was disappointed. He doesn't shout or threaten, just scolds him and says if you came to me offering friendship then those men will be suffering. This proves to show that the power of friendship can defeat all.
The cat just happened to randomly walk into the room while they were shooting the scene, and he thought he'd use it as a prop. It was totally improvised. True story. GENIUS!!
If it's a German Shepherd then it's alright coz we'd get a Pixie & Brutus Godfather scene... But if it's a golden retriever, they'd be so clingy demanding hugs.
"How much should I pay you?" And then all of them stand up, expressing their distaste for such a proposal. They were about to give him cold feet. Corleone turns him his back, but later changes his mind, asking him in the most polite way "Bonasera, what i have done to you to make you treat me so disrespecfully?" The manners and the language of a real boss. Each scene here is a masterpiece.... BTW The cat was an improvisation of Brando.
@@dmitrishostakovich9559 That makes sense, however look at Santino gesture just before Vito says "Bonasera, what...?" He understood the standing up as an order to get rid of Bonasera. The fact that Vito continues talking refrains them from doing so however.
In Asia, it's generally a custom to stand up when your guest, boss, or elders arrive at your table, as a way to show respect. I see similarity here, with added benefit that you can mobilize the moment your boss moves out.
“I learned then that practically no one in the world is entirely bad or entirely good, and that motives are often more important than actions.” Eleanor Roosevelt
Evan Bakerian yes that's true. I was like, "wtf? the cat's purr wasn't even that loud!" but i am pretty sure that the boom mic is sitting beside the cat (hidden in a plain sight on the camera)
Apparently the cat wasn't in the script, it was found eating scraps from a bin near the studio, someone Marlon Brando, bring a known animal lover, decided it would be good to have in a scene. So he kept it on screen but they had to remake this scene a few times because the cats purring was too loud.
Murder Murder Redrum If they did we shall all go to Warner Bros. or whatever company would publish a remake, (Probably Illumination Entertainment) and make them an offer they can't refuse. It would be to cancel a remake, it will be their signature on the paper or their brains.
As Don Corleone calmly explains his idea of “friendship” to the undertaker Bonasera, the first nearly full-body shot of the don reveals an unexpected guest: a gray and white cat sitting in Marlon Brando’s lap. “The cat in Marlon’s hands was not planned for,” director Francis Ford Coppola said later. “I saw the cat running around the studio, and took it and put it in his hands without a word.” Brando apparently loved children and animals, and it became part of the scene. But it also nearly ruined the shot. When the sound crew listened to Brando’s dialogue, they couldn’t understand a word he was saying and feared they would have to use subtitles. The problem wasn’t Brando but the cat, whose purring wrecked the sound. You can still hear it on the sound track.
If a Sicilian is gesturing and yelling at you then you can feel comfortable. If a Sicilian is talking to you gently and with a cold calm then you have to worry.
The way the cat just lays down on the desk instead of jumping off was so damn cool to me for some reason. Everyone on this movie even the cat did a good job
+cyberwolfy37 This is a brilliant scene, movie and performance by Brando. But the reality is Don Corleone was a criminal and murderer, the same as Michael. These gangsters respect one thing- money.
+cyberwolfy37 You know the first guy that complained about this new generation having no respect, and being a bunch of rascals. Socrates, in 500 B.C. Older generations will always found the new ones worse than they were.
+cyberwolfy37 I think you're reading way too much into this scene. Vito Corleone is an old time mobster boss who fancies himself a man of honor. He is considered a nobleman and demands respect in the form of total subservience from his underlings....he is the master of all he surveys within his fiefdom. In another words he's a wannabe king Godfather 1 and 2 is one of the best (argueably the best ) movie of all time but it's pure entertainment. If it shows anything it's the evil and sheer hypocrisy of life in the mafia. With all it's rules and code of honor it's members are just common thieves and murderers. Not anyone you'd want as a next door neighbor.
How amazingly this movie starts and slowly there are so many emotions . Fear , violence , betrayal , love . Its just too perfectly crafted and sewed together . I love first part more than the 2nd one .
The cat just happened to randomly walk into the room while they were shooting the scene, and he thought he'd use it as a prop. It was totally improvised. True store. GENIUS!!
Well, he also shows that he does not see himself as just some CEO of 'Murder, Inc'. He doesn't want to be asked to kill someone, and then just offered money. He wanted to be able to say that he was ordering a killing 'for justice', on behalf of 'a friend'. To be a hired killer for money is crass, and kind of modern. To be the one who metes out justice for friends is noble, like an aristocrat in the Renaissance. That image and identity, as an Old World nobleman, can ease his conscience, even though he really is just a criminal.
When I finally decided to watch The Godfather, I announced it to my family and my dad walked up to the tv screen asking for a fucking pointer stick because he was going to discuss the whole goddamn movie, comparing it to the books, explaining the Sicillian way, the undertones, etc. Its amazing how a movie can turn your lawyer father into a giddy fanboy/nerd (Id totally be like that if I have kids)
@@tragicmemesfortragicteens8978 its not exactly *liking* the godfather that made it nerdy, it was more that my father was being so anal about it, explaining the culture, the ~implication~ of the lines, the italian way, the book vs. the movie, why i predicted sonny would die (even tho i didn't really have any reason, and i only predicted it because of the way movies make deaths predictable), the way he showed me a picture of him 6 years ago, wearing a suit and posing with his toy guns (yknow the one with pellets idk what its called) while watching the godfather... he was a full blown fanboy/nerd-- in reflection i shoula used geek instead of nerd but oh well
One of the best scenes in all of cinema. The Don gives no loyalty to country or political party. He has no faith in the government or the courts of law. He is fiercely and violently loyal to his family and friends. He abides by a code of ethics. In many ways he has effectively declared himself independent of the government. He looks for no handouts from the government, and he assumes full responsibility for himself, his family, and his friends. This includes the responsibility to wage war if or when necessary. He is ruthless, but not arbitrary. The punishment must fit the crime. He is loyal to his friends, and he expects his friends to be loyal to him. Those who betray are traitors, and traitors are to be put to death. In his own way, he is a dedicated businessman, a politician, a judge, a soldier, a husband, and a father. He provides. He protects. All he asks is for your respect, your loyalty, and your friendship.
+Dan Hillman Well...yes and no. The problem is Hollywood glorifies characters like this when in reality they are thieves, liars and murderers. In the book Vito "ain't so nice" as it goes into more of his activities. Michael shares with Kay at the wedding how his father was willing to splatter a band leaders brains if he didn't let Johnny Fontane out of a performance contract, the details of which were never told and be they unfavorable to Fontaine is irrelevant that's MURDER and the "punishment does NOT fit the crime"! It simply could have stated Fontane finish his dated performance obligations. Ironic you wrote "The Don Protects" ..as the 'Protection Racket' (aka EXTORTION) is the Mafias MAIN source of income. "Mr. small busy owner if you don't pay us $1,000 a month you may get hurt or your business may ACCIDENTALLY burn down", thievery via intimidation upon barely making business owners; seems to me the ABSENCE of ethics entirely. Young Vito kills Don Fannuci in his apartment so he and his friends no longer have to pay him "protection"...do you think Vito suddenly put an END to the "protection racket" after he killed him? F-NO! Vito just took it over. Lastly and most grotesquely when Tom goes to "fix" the situation in Part 2 involving the Senator and dead prostitute at their operated whorehouse, that girl's death was NO ACCIDENT! she was violently murdered (see blood splatter) orchestrated by Tom and his henchmen (fully sanctioned by Michael) in order to FRAME the Senator for assistance at Michael's trial! While Tom is consoling the Senator telling him "they will take care of it..this girl had no family..nobody knows she's even here"..etc..how would Tom know all this so suddenly? "Not Arbitrary" you wrote..seemingly unless it comes to SELF PRESERVATION then they murder young girls. Now i know this was Michael not Vito...but the apple doesn't fall far from the tree (see above). Sorry for rant..i enjoy mafia films and loved The Soprano's etc.. but I'd NEVER put these men on a pedestal and call them "Honorable" for they are the absence of!
It was only a movie. I don't actually believe that the Corleone characters are just and virtuous characters. What made the movies interesting and fascinating is that you could at least see on some level that the Corleones had some sense of ethics, honor, and decency. Were they hypocrites? Yes... but who isn't? I loved the first scene of the first movie. The Don refuses to perform murder for money - claiming, "That is not justice; your daughter is alive." Of course, it was just a movie - a fictional story - that has little - if any - basis in reality. Vito is portrayed as a family man - playing with his grandson on the day of his death. In reality, I don't think for a second that people who get involved in organized crime are so committed to family and family values. But that's what made the story so fun. Vito barely escapes from Sicily with his life as a young kid after his father, brother, and mother are murdered. He marries a woman in America and then he confronts and kills Don Fannuci - freeing an entire community from extortion. And he wanted to spare Michael from ever going into the family business. Was he a hypocrite? Absolutely. As Michael said, "My father is no different from any important man who is responsible for other people - like a senator." In the history of our nation, the vast majority of politicians have been corrupt and hypocritical. This is not so much a defense of Vito as it is an indictment on our elected officials.
+1 Bad Jesus Mofo this book and the movie,;they are a parabola. is it ok when a police officer kills sombody? is it ok, when a president leads a country to war? this vito corleone charakter could probably not exist in real life. but the book is full of philosophy. like this scene. good people, as you call it, just let others do their dirty work. if you realy understand the movie, you see that its a story told beyond good and evil. he is who he is, and the world is violent. killing is killing, weather done for duty, profit or fun. and when you decide to protect youreself, you cant ever show a weakness. and everything, every country, every law, was built by men who refused to follow the rule of others. and often the biggest moralists were the cruelest people. to be, or not to be, that is the question.
"Married with Children" did a great spoof on this scene, where Al plays the Godfather. Al says, "someday . . . and that day may never come . . ." * small smile * "but ummm . . . you and I know it probably WILL."
The cat is the real don. He's getting exactly what he wants and then when they need to separate he just sits on the corner of the table like the boss he is.
now i've *never* watched the godfather, but anyone who so respectfully treats a cat sitting in their lap during a dramatic scene has automatically earned my respect
Brando had his issues in life as we all do, but the great thing he had going for himself was that he had a total confidence in performing a role with zero self consciousness or embarrassment.
***** True. Bonasera is really being rather rude if you think about it. He's trying to hire the Don as if he was some common street thug, constantly asking him, "how much shall if pay you?" Bonasera wants to keep this exchange strictly about the money but that's not the way the Don views his relationships.
Not really, the point is that he doesn't sell services for money, but as a friend to the Don, Bonasera would be entitled to his help and protection, yet it works the other way too, the Don expect his friends to help him when he require it and he is a mob boss. Which is why Bonasera just wants keep it as a bussiness deal.
And, if you come to think about it, an undertaker might be a very helpful friendship in his line of work...."What body?" "Oh, that was the d'Annunzio's. Dropping like flies,..."
Being gentle and playful with the cat while discussing murder and assault adds to the depth of the Don. He can be gentle with his friends and brutal to his enemies. He has the self control to be both. Also makes the horse head scene much creepier as you see the dark side of a man you've seen as gentle earlier. Woltz was an enemy of Vito and his animal was treated accordingly.
I love Tom Hagen out of all the characters. His backstory of having been orphaned and becoming a lawyer. There's a certain assurance and up-rightness about him. Quiet power. A true stand-up guy with a cool head. The perfect consigliere
“If by chance an honest man like yourself should make enemies, then they would become my enemies... And then they would fear you” 👈🏼 the way he delivers that line gives me chills every time…brilliant
Vito Corleone is the best friend you could ever have. Those guys wouldn’t have dared to laid hands on his daughter if they knew her father could have both of them in the hospital in 3 teeth left between them with a single phone call.
Im a '94 Baby but this movie taught me a lot about respecting others and how family is the ultimate key in life. Respect is earned, not given. Love the 1st and 2nd movie.
A token of respect should *always* be given to everybody. That's just common courtesy. If you value your fellow humans simply if they earn your respect or not you're in for some nasty surprises in life I'm afraid. You can respect people for their job and their expertise, but at the same time have absolutely no respect for them as individuals or their personalities. It's not so black and white, and a set absolute like you seem to think it is. Above all respect the fact that people are different and not everybody is like you, and even if you don't understand them it doesn't give you the right to disrespect them. If you don't believe me I suggest you try to show no respect to somebody you know nothing about but simply think isn't worthy of your respect yet. I'm afraid your blatant disrespect and rigid outlook might lead you into trouble. Reason goes way beyond respect. And without reason you have *nothing*
Bonasera: I didn't want to get into trouble. Don Corleone: I understand. You found paradise in America, you had a good trade, you made a good living. The police protected you and there were courts of law. And you didn't need a friend like me. But uh, now you come to me and you say - 'Don Corleone, give me justice.' But you don't ask with respect. You don't offer friendship. You don't even think to call me Godfather. Instead, you come into my house on the day my daughter is to be married, and you ask me to do murder for money. Bonasera: I ask for justice. Don Corleone: That is not justice. Your daughter is still alive. Bonasera: Let them suffer then, as she suffers. How much shall I pay you? Don Corleone: Bonasera, Bonasera. What have I ever done to make you treat me so disrespectfully? If you'd come to me in friendship, then this scum that ruined your daughter would be suffering this very day. And if by chance an honest man like yourself should make enemies, then they would become my enemies. And then they would fear you. Bonasera: Be my friend - - Godfather.

They stood up out of respect not for what Bonasera said
Them standing up when Don Corleone did is simply custom. When a man of high regard rises from his chair, those beside him are obliged to follow suit.

That cat deserved an Oscar nomination
I loved the parody of this with Dom Deluise. He is petting the cat and it is motionless. He says "This Cat is Dead. Get me a new cat."

The Don refuses to perform murder for money - claiming, "That is not justice; your daughter is alive."
Of course, it was just a movie - a fictional story - that has little - if any - basis in reality. This is not so much a defense of Vito as it is an indictment on our elected officials.
a mafia boss is just an emperor to the aspect of society not covered by the law.
+1 Bad Jesus Mofo
this book and the movie,;they are a parabola. is it ok when a police officer kills sombody? is it ok, when a president leads a country to war? this vito corleone charakter could probably not exist in real life. but the book is full of philosophy. like this scene. good people, as you call it, just let others do their dirty work. if you realy understand the movie, you see that its a story told beyond good and evil. he is who he is, and the world is violent. killing is killing, weather done for duty, profit or fun. and when you decide to protect youreself, you cant ever show a weakness. and everything, every country, every law, was built by men who refused to follow the rule of others. and often the biggest moralists were the cruelest people. to be, or not to be, that is the question.

Not really, the point is that he doesn't sell services for money, but as a friend to the Don, Bonasera would be entitled to his help and protection, yet it works the other way too, the Don expect his friends to help him when he require it and he is a mob boss.
