Gymnasts focus on landing exactly where they started, divers need to land far from their starting point to avoid the diving board. These could honestly be considered different types of flips.
Well actually they are considered different types of flips - backward somersault is when you jump up and land at the same spot (ideally) and gainer is when you jump up and forward and do a backward somersault. In short, if you land on the spot - it's a backward flip, land upfront - gainer
As a diver, that's not true at all. You don't want to go forward at all on a reverse, and want to be a foot away from the board. Anything more than two feet and you are losing serious points for distance. The board naturally pushes you away as you jump so you actually have to put considerable effort to jump straight up and minimize the distance away you jump.
As a gymnast turned current diver and current gymnastics coach a gainer in gymnastics and a gainer in diving are the same kind of flip. A backwards salto that moves forward instead of starting and stopping in the same position. Also youre 100% wrong saying we need to try to get far from the board lmao. Divers spend years trying to learn how to get as close as possible to the board without hurting ourselves especially on blind dives like reverses.
as a former diver - no you absolutely dont on anything other than platform, and even then thats only if you’re doing a backwards takeoff and you can get deducted for landing too far away. on springboard all you should be focusing is on height because the board will take you forward regardless
Undoing muscle memory is evident, if a diver stays in place, he won't make it to the water😊 as opposed to gymnast, they depend on being able to land where they left off.
Not true. The board naturally gives you distance, so divers are more focused on staying as close to the board as they can. On a reverse dive, you are walking a fine line with jumping as vertically as you can to counteract the forward momentum of your hurdle and the board, without being so close you endanger yourself.
@@awildfilingcabinet6239but all of divers flips have forward momentum from a standing start. This is just adjusting HOW MUCH momentum. Gymnasts don’t do a flip like this that often. They are either flipping on the same spot or doing a combination with a running start on floor.
@@awildfilingcabinet6239 but you still have to focus on jumping away from the board, yes you shouldnt jump too far but they do practice stuff like this to make sure they dont land on the board
and doing both can screw you up, heard a story of a person who was a diver and a TNT gymnast and he was practicing a new flip and landed with his toes pointed as if in a dive(didnt end well at all...), and to the contrary I who trained mainly trampoline have done flips straight to my back off of the diving board cause on the trampoline staying tucked and landing on you're neck and face hurts a lot more than just staying tucked in water.
I'm assuming the difference comes from the competing intent behind this particular move. While I can do neither sport, if the health of my skull was predicated on consistently moving in a specific direction, i HOPE to be as good at doing so! 👍
I love watching these, it’s like ice skaters vs hockey players 😂 obviously their skills are set for different things, it’s just cool to see what they can do lol
Honestly gainers were one of the hardest skills like gymnastics literally makes it feel like a wall is in front of you. Like no matter what I would do there was absolutely zero forward momentum and I’d land in exactly the same spot
I will say as a diver this makes so much sense that the divers one. What they did to win is something we are very aware of when we do gainers and we actually try to avoid moving out because the board pushes us out. So we know how to not be close be using bad technic
Second dude with the sweats had the most potential. Doing a move for what seems to me, his first attempts at trying this move. And then nails it on his first try, with what looked like 0 effort and still caught hang time.
I mean makes sense considering gymnasts are trying to stay on something or in the same spot usually while drivers are basically trying to get away from the spot they started so they don’t smash their head open

How does Ian lose every single one of these so horribly 💀
😭
😂😂😂
😅😅😅😂
🎉🎉🎉🎉
I don’t even know anymore😂😂

@@awildfilingcabinet6239what about the 10m platform? No propellement. That's literally like a backwards somersault in tuck.

Khoi always manages to land so perfectly on his feet
right!! khoi is so precise
He’s black

@@vicenterebolledo8798 great observation, you might put sherlock holmes out of a job if you're not careful! 🤪
@@annika6592did they mean it as a compliment or insult
Thats some dedication, I could never do a gainer
Neither can Ian. Lol.
They’re fun in my opinion only into water or on a tramp (diver btw)
I can’t do them to save my life except on a trampoline
it's not that hard, you just have to practice it
neither could ian😢
early for ONCE also you going backwards is literally just hilarious 😭
Great warmups Khoi!😂
Of course the diver wins. Their skulls depend on that forward motion to avoid the platforms.
Khoi always seems so methodical and thinks his movements through before his attempt. Love the critical thinking
Y'all are probably the physically healthiest group of friends in the world.
Hey Ian, just wanted to tell you that I got my full yesterday!!!!🎉🎉🎉🎉
Congratulations!!
nice!
Let’s gooo!!! 🎉
I don’t know what this mean but congratulations 🥳🎉
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤

Divers gotta clear the board so they are used to jumping behind or forward a lot while gymnasts want to stick it
@@acheronalexander yup!!
The last dude literally jumped back more than he jumped forward from the landing what a humble master at this😅
Khoi looked like he was surprised he went forward at all lol. Y'all are talented lol.
Ian wins for farthest (backwards) backtuck????
Ian is the definition of task failed successfully
I laughed at the guys who barely made any distance, then I remembered I'm 30lbs overweight and definitely can't do a standing back flip.
I'm convinced... gymnasts are nice people. 💙
I love watching these, it’s like ice skaters vs hockey players 😂 obviously their skills are set for different things, it’s just cool to see what they can do lol
Honestly, I’d hope that divers won that cause they need to be able to jump out like that 😂😅
Khoi is always so methodical!
Really impressive for the gymnasts who were able to do it
khoi is like a cat that man is always landing pretty
Okay but Brenna landed in ALMOST the exact same spot she took off, that was insane
I like how you were grabbing khoi's leg to measure his feet😅
Khois gainer was by far the most graceful, dude has great height and awesome rotation!
Take into account any of these people pulling off a standing backflip is better than 99%+ of the world that has ever lived.
Two of you are best suited for working the beam, landing EXACTLY where you started from! Lol
Divers are so cool, my favorite part of meets is when we get to sit back and watch them :)
"Hero dw has joined the chat"💀💀
Jack has amazing skills
Tried this with a friend a couple of years ago on a trampoline. Almost got paralyzed. Fun times
I love how the gymnasts did some recovery rolls, that was really cool
khoi always has the strategizing/practicing before i love it
Where's my Cayenne Peppa?😿
Love the narrative arc with the last person blowing everyone out the water ❤
Watching the gymnast color wheel was the best for me 😂😂
Bro was doing soudjoud💀
The gymnasts were so confused 😂😂
I’m scared doing this flip cause I remembered doing the farthers gainer flip and ended up landing on my face. 😅
Honestly gainers were one of the hardest skills like gymnastics literally makes it feel like a wall is in front of you. Like no matter what I would do there was absolutely zero forward momentum and I’d land in exactly the same spot
Last bro pressed W after jumping with Space bar
Who knew divers were so good at gymnastics
"do a gainnnneerrrrr" lmfao all I could think about when I heard it.
Ian looked so defeated when he said he gave up 😭

There’s a Nigerian in ur midst 😂😂😂 the Jesus at the end hit me 😂😂❤
I kinda wanna see if the divers can stay where they started when they jumped??
Is NO ONE gonna talk about the moan in the beginning 🫣
how?!?! thats actually crazy
They train for that, otherwise skill is in shambles
They gon hit the diving board if not
The first ‘’ ahuh🤕🙋” got me dying whhaah
That is what I call practice
The chalk on the mat is soooo satisfying
Jack is a BEAST!
The drawing looks so satisfying
"i went backwards" STILL BETTER THAN MOST HUMANS
Thats so interesting that its such a specific skill
ian your content is amazing and me and my level 5 teammates watch your videos
the last guy was slightly behind the starting line and STILL MANAGED TO GET THE FURTHEST?? that shi is crazyy
This was a really good video. Fun!
i'm convinced ian is secretly musty
Last dude destroyed the competition
Taylor was done dirty. He actually landed about the line.
Bro actually made a voice crack at the start 😂💀
The look on your face when you went backwards 😂
Ian is just actually perfect with sticking the landing he can't even do it wrong
I was reading DRIVER this whole time lmaooo. I genuinely got surprised, like damn those drivers are pretty skilled 💀
I think I woke up my cat laughing lol
That last one was crazy
THE MOAN 😭😭😭😭😭
Last one was insane
Ian and mulligan:
Front flip! Front! Flip!
Brain: nope
Dude, I feel like my toes would be doomed on my first attempt
Bro said “alright” at the one girls jump
Okay but the chalk on the carpet was satisfying
I was so invested lol
The hip thrust practice😂
Jack just SPANKED y'all. Everyone just accept it and give that guy his well-earned high-five.
That last one scared tf out of me
that guy was crazy
IAN !!! I was really rooting for you ! 😂
Khoi with his hair out! Flying through the wind
The distance Ian travelled is in negative m. 🤣🤣🤣
as a gymnast AND a diver i’d fail so bad
Parkour athletes: hold my beer
Arun landed in the perfect sojoud position.. lol !
it’s because the gymnasts are used to landing in the same spot 😭
The last one is just crazy omg
Bro went backwards 😂💀
Jack must have got the blessing of a magical frog for being able to jump like that
Is it just me or does Khoi look like i showspeed?😂😂😂
As a muslim, when arun fell on his landing and landed into prostration i laughed way too hard💀
Jack stuck the first one. Then went farther than anyone when he realized they were counting SLOP!
Bro went negative lmao 🤣🤣
