Mossdale, a solo trip to Piston chamber.

- Taking advantage of the dry settled weather, I decided to head down to a place I had failed to visit for quite some time. With only an evening available and no one to accompany I made a solo trip into the cave. I found I had forgotten quite a bit of the early part of the route and I took several wrong turns in the entrance boulder maze which delayed me, longer than I would like. This was my first time on my own in this cave and on my own the cave felt as if it had certain foreboding atmosphere at points which hopefully come out in the video that I could almost describe as disturbing. I even heard voices in the sloshing of the water, a common phenomena in caves but exasperated here. However, eventually I made it to my destination only to not find the way through, though I did not search too hard, mainly due to lack of time and a small bit of a voice at the back of my head to tell me get out, a sense of relief that I could turn around.
Simon, my hats off for you for making the trip so many times. The walk alone which is more than an hour is enough to put a lot of people off.

I'm here from Shrouded hand video, the history of this cave is crazy and you went into it, you are a brave man.
I hope the Shrouded Hand video boosts this man's channel
@@catsphalt I just watched the Shrouded hand's video, it is very well done.
Props for making it out
I... Can't imagine crawling for 270 meters in near total darkness. Cavers like Alex have guts and I admire that. >~
I came here from Shrouded Hand, as well. Got to Shrouded Hand, by watching a bunch of cave tragedy videos of MrBallen’s.
nice vid and so i'm not the only one who hears the caves talking to me when i'm underground alone one time i was certain i was talking to another caver at the other end of a bolder choke with a stream running through it but when i got past it there was no one there and no way they could have gotten out of the chamber without going past me through the single route through the choke i found it some what strange and amusing but i can imagine, never having been there my self that in mossdale with its atmosphere and history that its would be much more unsettling.
900m inside a wet cave alone I swear I heard people talking but I couldn’t quite make out the words and it freaked me out. The sounds the water makes are weird
Great video Alex! Kinda strange seeing that well travelled journey in film. Every visit, no matter how frequent it's become feels unique. Much of the time the difference lies with the self, your thoughts and feelings, mood etc... still, the reality of being there could never be fully captured, without sampling it for oneself. Well done, and good effort!!
oh thats horrifying. imma go full screen and watch the whole video
🤣
How the f*"k they get scaffolding down there 🤯.
Fair play to you, just watching the video gives me clastropbia. You cavers are crazy ☺️
Here from shrouded hand as well! I cant believe you went into this cave. I would freak out
That looks like an enjoyable one to explore :P
It's all fun and games until you stumble upon one of those creatures from "The Descent"
Omg ya
what about Chadwick Hopson from The Last Descent
MOSSDALE! Alone? At least I'll watch it in 3rd person
Brilliant video but dude you're crazy be careful.
3:36 I can definitely hear some creepy noises. I'm into audio engineering and have some good headphones. I can't hear anything distinct. What I imagine to just be weird noises the caves are making. It would give me the creeps though. I have some slight hearing loss and in loud environments I'll hear stuff that isn't there. When I play drums loudly I always think I hear people over the sound of drums. Well that's gotta be creepy. I'm sure with the flowing water over rocks there are all kinds of noises in mossdale
Yes, I suspect its the same thing. The effect is definitely more noticeable when you are on your own, perhaps because on your own other people are making too much noise, or it's more of psychological thing.
@@HoleyMoleyAlex i get the same mine exploring, in sure something down there. Xx
I wonder what type of fish those were? That would be awesome to discover a whole new species! Very possible!
I am sure someone will know, I doubt they are a new species. There are definitely quite a few in that cave.
This is actually how I imagine hell to be 😂 Music included.
Wow....I heard a female voice before I even saw the text on the screen....dude, those cavers that drowned probably haunt the place from time to time.
Thing is....I don’t think any of the 6 were female, that passed in 1967. So, that raises the question: what female DID die down there? That may be even CREEPIER! When was it? Could’ve been a woman running from some crazy pillagers in the 1500s, or something. Ya never know.
the female voice must be Adele, she is a spelunker that accompanies Simon in most of his trips down there.
I reckon to be caver of this calibre you have to be brave but also slightly unhinged.
I've subscribed saw you on Caspersight channel
I probably am a bit of both lol.
@@HoleyMoleyAlex Nowt wrong with that
0:47 are those plastic bags on the floor that potholers have just discarded?
I went potholing several times in the Mendips back in the late 70s and early 80s, and this brings it back. You are wise to go alone; I distinctly recall the smell of collective bad breath in some of the small open areas!!!
No potholders don't generally litter, in-fact we often remove it from the caves if we can. We really try and look after our caves in the UK. Most rubbish is washed in from the surface as we all know this cave floods. I think however in this case that bag was a temporary container to remove a load of old wire from the rescue many years ago a very hard job. The bag was not there on my most recent visit. Mendips though I agree does stink a little lol.
@@HoleyMoleyAlex Ha Ha, thanks for the info, and yes removing rusty old wire is a difficult job under the best of circumstances, let alone from a pot hole. Kudos to them for removing it and to you for your attitude to litter. Stay safe, regards from a southern stinker!!
Amazing, How do you find your way out? Looks like a fast way to get lost! 🤓
Wow a solo trip? You got ballz of steel my friend!
I would love to understand what those "pipes" are for at the end of the video. Sorry for the bad english, I'm from Brazil and I'm learning the language
Those are scaffold bars normally used in construction. They are there to support the roof and walls to protect him for collapse as he digs in there trying to find new passage.
@@HoleyMoleyAlex This is amazing, thanks so much for the explanation.
Your English is wayyy better than most people who were born and raised in the United States.
A thought that’s probably been wondered about many times.... but I can’t help imagine what it would be like to lose your light source, not to be trapped, but just deep into the cave system fumbling aimlessly in the primeval darkness.
I have thought about that, that's why especially on my own I have two backups. I once tested getting out of a cave without a light at all (I simply turned it off and had to resist the urge to turn it back on again) and it took me 45 minutes to traverse a relatively simple passage that normally takes 5 minutes and only had one possible wrong turn. Somewhere like Mossdale would be impossible, hence why my backup backup is a telling someone where I have gone.
@@HoleyMoleyAlex i take 3 good ones. Plus some glow sticks and a micro torch. Plus candles. And spare batteries x
@@hhuodod2209 can't hurt to be prepared :)
Is this the cave where the 6 guys die in 1967? And the bodies is still there?
the bodies were buried somewhere in the higher ground. It was done by a second trip by another cavers. They went in and buried the bodies in drier place since its difficult to carry the bodies out.
How far is that from where those kids died in 67
Not that close, probably at least an hour caving time.
@@HoleyMoleyAlex would you ever go that deep? Is it really impossible to remove the bodies?
@@SaintAlessa I have been past where they are buried, but never entered that particular chamber out of respect. The deepest point in the cave I think is Stream End Cave where I have been (see my earlier vid) and it's deeper then where they are buried (they are buried off the main route to the end).
@@HoleyMoleyAlex thank you! I will check out the video
look for diamonds!!! >:0
Hope he carried a spare torch. Just imagine losing your light if it failed. It's scary enough when you can actually see!
Yep always have at least 1 backup especially when solo.
Lol i have at least 3 all as good as each other.
Why? That’s the question I ask.
Like Hillary once said regarding Everest, because it's there!
Because its there.
Do you guys still pass right over the bodies in there? oO
the bodies were moved in 1970's to another chamber called the sanctuary in high mud caverns, they are not lying in the path. I really dont know wether they are buried or not in that chamber cause there is no public photos from that chamber. Andy Sparrow, a famous speleologist, said that most of the remains were buried...''most''.
It sounds like the voice says: "eyes", "guys" or "ice". Then says "I think I can get in here." Then a pause. Then with a deeper, dread filled type voice of same voice says "awful."
What time? I cant hear a voice
@@willtattersall1940 3:36 . It says "guys", "eyes" or "ice" really elongated and weird. Then says "I think I can fit in here" pretty fast. Then, there's a short pause and then a deeper, with a dreadful tone to the voice says "awful." It's right before it says something about voices on the screen.
@@ryanhuffman7410 isnt that just the camera man saying "god i hate it when I think I can hear people"
@@willtattersall1940 no ? You really can't hear the voice?
@@ryanhuffman7410 i think were hearing the same voice, i just thought it was the camera man saying what i just said
The bodies still down there rite
Yeah
Yes but they have been buried now with a plaque (still in the cave)
You are not rong..
Why are people so weird about this; why does it make a difference to strangers whether they're buried in a graveyard or in a cave system that they cared about; let them be.
Voices from the 6 who drowned there maybe!
I don't understand why you'd ever want to put yourself in such a place.
3:37 *Voice: I’ve got ice on my finger and can’t go deeper.* That’s what the voice sounds like it’s saying to me, creepy. It sounds like a young guy in his 20’s.
So that wasn't his voice at 3:37???
@@shaunokeefe7162 It was his voice.
I thought this cave was sealed up after those cavers drown inside? But also why do you find this fun? And isn’t going alone not smart? Lol. Idk drowning in a cramped dark cave doesn’t sound like a good time a adventure time a thrill time. Just a bad time but thanks for showing us the Inside of that place I enjoy watching it so I guess I’ll thank ppl like you 🤪
See other comments (they may be on my other vid). It was sealed up for a couple of years but now is not, and access is sort of allowed now, but only to the experienced. As for why I find it's fun, it gets you out of your comfort zone it's something different than stewing in-front of the TV or something (which is what I am stuck doing at the moment, thanks Covid!). Why do people climb Everest? Why did man go into space? If the few of us did not do this, then who would? Going alone? Well, it's is not for everyone, but I often struggle to get others to come with so I have no choice, but provided you leave a call out, it's not really any more dangerous and you have supplies with you to sort yourself out. That's why I have that big bag in the video!
@@HoleyMoleyAlex life is way to precious, for this stuff.
"I guess ill thank people like you" Who cares who you thank youre boring
@@tekay44 If you took all the things that can kill you out of this precious life we have, it wouldn't be life anymore. It would just be 'existence'.
Actually there wouldn't be anything left; you can be killed just walking down a street or even at home, accidents /violence; no life is entirely risk free no matter what you choose to do. And if you did just stay in, you'd probably get obese & die from that instead :/
At 3:36 right after the voices there appears to be a vaguely human shaped form in the left tunnel. I know it's probably just some white rocks illuminated by your light, but it's creepy none the less. Especially combined with the voice like sounds you recorded.
Something about being in deep water?
