India's signing of a 10-year contract with Iran to develop and operate the Chabahar port marks a significant diplomatic stride by the Narendra Modi-led government. Situated on Iran's south-eastern coast, the port serves as a vital gateway for India to access Iran, Afghanistan, and Central Asian countries, bypassing traditional routes through rival Pakistan's ports. Despite US warnings of potential sanctions, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar asserts that the Chabahar project will benefit the entire region, urging a broader perspective beyond geopolitical tensions. Meanwhile, US Ambassador Eric Garcetti hints at India's exemption from sanctions, citing the exceptional relationship between the two nations. However, concerns linger regarding Iran's history of global terrorism, prompting caution in engaging with the regime. As India navigates this strategic partnership, the Chabahar port emerges as a symbol of regional cooperation and economic integration, underscoring the complexities of international relations in the Middle East.

The US should appreciate that India is the only channel for the west to the entire Central Asia and its role is critical that the region is totally under Chinese influence. Chabahar is also critical for India’s foothold in Afganistan. Even Turkey because of its NATO membership is suspect. US should therefore take India’s Chabahar hold from a strategic point. Similiar is India’s participation in BRICS and SCO
