  • Free Western Series: Bonanza - Episode 102 - The Quest - Wanting to prove his independence and (at the same time) break out of the shadows of his Pa and older brothers, Little Joe sets out to win a lucrative timber contract for the Ponderosa
    The Quest
    Director: Christian Nyby
Writers: John Furia (as John Joseph), Thomas Thompson
Stars: Lorne Greene, Pernell Roberts, Dan Blocker
    Genre: Western
    Country: USA
    Language: English
Release Date: 30 September 1962 USA
Filming Locations: Diamond Peak, Lake Tahoe, California, USA
    Storyline:
Tired of living in the shadow of older brothers Adam and Hoss, Joe Cartwright demands that his father Ben give him more of a say in running the Ponderosa. Impressed, Ben hands Joe the solo responsibly of suppling timber to a mining company's construction project. As he begins this assignment, Joe is certain that he can do the job without anyone else's help-but can he?
    Reviews:
"This Bonanza episode focuses on Michael Landon who is feeling the need to establish his place in the Cartwright orbit and to have some achievements of his own. I can see his point, he just doesn't want to be thought of as the kid brother.
He bids on a contract to deliver lumber and he has a very good idea on how to do it which I will not reveal. The problem is that Landon puts his trust in the wrong people and of course in the end whom can you really trust but family.
And no doubt about it the Cartwrights are as a loyal a family as you can get. This is a nice story about the loyalty and devotion of the Cartwrights as a family unit." Written by bkoganbing on IMDb.com
"Little Joe is restless, feeling as though his Pa and brothers are always looking over his shoulder and never giving him his proper respect as a man. A company is taking bids from outfits to provide lumber for a new project they have beginning in the area, and Little Joe decides to go after the contract, on his own. Pa, Hoss and Adam keep their distance in order to give Joe his space, and Little Joe takes on the whole operation himself, hiring his own crew, including friend Dave Donovan. Donovan proves to be not such a good friend by taking advantage and jeopardizing Joe's plans. Joe fires Donovan and the some of the crew that he brought on to work. Donovan, with the help of Povaey (the man Little Joe beats out for the job) sets up to destroy Joe's plans." Written by mary-397 on IMDb.com

This is what to happened to America. It wasn't Hollywood's fault.. they did their part in framing the issues. It was Clint Eastwwod and his "feeling lucky punk" routine.. that's what we wanted.. and that's what they gave us. Do you think it's a coincidence there's no moral center derived from today's experience? And that trying to do something good gets you called a name? I know you didn't ask for this comment.. but in a way.. we all did asked for it. Except now there is no more "we" that will accept right or wrong. I'm tired. Too tired to do more than watch Bonanza and hope that the nazis or Russians don't show up in an episode. "Remember we're all here, son. If you need us." Yeah.. blame it all on the Hollywood liberal who wrote that. Responsibility with guns, to defend what was universally good.. that was all okay. Guns as an instrument of coercion to get your own way, to get revenge, to project your manhood, to threaten the wife you can't control? Not so much. Ride the tiger? Not me. It always was about the morals that we learned at school AND at home. Now you can't tell anybody's kid that maybe they're doing something wrong.. not even the ones you've watched grow up. Sometimes not even your own. It's all different now and it's NOT BETTER simply because WE don't want it to be. We haven't fought hard enough. Good and evil always existed but now.. when one would think it'd be a fairer fight.. it's actually going the other way. They cut down a lot of trees but Hollywood had Ben Cartwright as the rancher promoting "sustainability" which is now a dirty word. Know it all? No. Just a know too much. Reading books or having real morals shouldn't be this hard. I know who I blame. Going back now to picking up the trash on the grounds around my apartment. A losing cause. The big house? Just a bunch of people with grievances who don't care about anybody else's.

Other people worked hard and didn't have the extreme wealth that the Cartwright's had. How do you explain that? It's also got a lot to do with being at the right place at the right time. Like Ben being there to claim all that land when it was available. If another Ben came along now he could never do what the real Ben did because the opportunity is gone, all that land is already owned. Sure there are other opportunities but less of them.

That is, unless he's a Cartwright. Even if Ben didn't underwite the loan he still had the Cartwright name. The only way you could prove otherwise is if the bank manager knew nothing about that family. But that wasn't the case. Donnovan was absolutely right if it was him who went asking for the loan he'd never have gotten it.

As Joe admitted he made some mistakes in his judgement. For a man without such a powerful family to back him up it would have meant his endeavor would have failed. For him it meant he had to swallow his pride and ask for help. But in any event with the experience and wisdom he gained from his mistakes, hopefully he would be better able to manage things in the future.

I've always admired the Old West fast gun legends, with Wyatt Earp as my favorite. But I can't seem to find any Bonanza episodes that had some super fast gunfighter as the center of the story. I've seen the one where Little Joe taught his friend how to shoot, but that one didn't exactly fit what I'm talking about.

May I recommend Broken Ballad | Episode 72. A professional gun fighter who wants to leave all that for the simple life. That's actually a very common plot device in Bonanza and other westerns. I won't give any plot spoilers but I love the speech at 25:54 and the song at 14:10. This episode epitomizes the spirit of the western.

Yeah, but Joe is young, remember? He's trying to figure out 'manhood'. This is the point of him wanting to get this contract, to prove to himself that he can accomplish something of importance on his own. But his daddy also wanted Joe to know that family is important too and family work together to solve their problems. Joe is smart and he learned a few hard lessons through out this whole thing.
