Sadly, it happens to people a lot. These poor couples are so desperate that they take the chance just for the small chance they might get to bring home the baby. If there was even was a baby in the first place

Yeah definitely, but that would be hard to prove. If for example another couple came forward and said they'd been scammed by them also then she'd be screwed.
This is why you need to go through a legal adoption so that you don’t get taken advantage of😢

Agree 100%. Also the defendant knew all the legal terms very well to say she didn't have to pay it back. She scammed them, and she's done it before.

The parents have the right to change their minds, but to hide throwing a whole babyshower means they were going to keep the baby. They're despicable scammers

So they couldn’t pay their rent, buy groceries or toys for their other children yet they continued having more babies AND dad is unemployed. Those children need a lot of prayer. I’m so curious as to where they are now.

Not really, no. They tried worming through a loophole in the law, and then when it didn't work out tried to pretend they weren't doing exactly what they did. In lieu of buying a child, they made "charitable donations" with the understanding they would get to adopt the child. AKA Rumplestiltskin.

She used them to pay her rent. I am sure they are not the first couple she has scammed. She said her husband did not want to go through a second adoption. Seems like this is how they both make their living.

Based on the law, you can't sell another person. She didn't sell the baby. But she did take money from them.

She was using the baby as a means of earning money but we all know good and well that the baby was never going to be sold. They knew they could get money off of the pregnancy in the meantime, but knew they legally wouldn't need to pay it back if they changed their mind. It was all planned out.

Imagine being the kind of person that would scam two people desperately seeking a child. That baby is going to live a less-than-charmed life growing up with those two morally deficient people as parents.

JJ mentions at the end that they MIGHT be able to make a claim for the moneys they spent towards the adoption IF there had been some fraud involved. I personally DO think the defendant was DECEITFUL from the beginning, having a baby shower and naming the child BEFORE she even started the adoption process. There's the letter of the law, and there's the spirit of the law, where judges and other law officers have some discretion in deciding culpability. If I were JJ I would full on give the plaintiffs ALL the money they gave to that LYING, MANIPULATIVE, IMMORAL defendant!
Oh, that law is horrible. The defendant fully intended to scam the plaintiffs out of a lot of money, and got away with it.
Oh, and I don't believe the male plaintiff would have loaned the defendant a dime if she hadn't told them what they wanted to hear. Seriously. He may be trying to make his case better, but not even his wife believed it.
At least now in 2024, we have laws to protect people from these scammers. Defendant knew what she was doing back then. For many babies were promised and many times there was no child.

That couple is going to have a fun car ride home. Husband "Of course we would have helped them out even if we knew they would keep the baby!" Wife "no."

The couple should’ve gone through a legal adoption agency with paperwork and legal protections. They were trying to buy a baby no matter what they think they were doing.
It is absolutely DISGUSTING that there isn’t a law to protect people paying for an adoption. This is a complete set up for scammers to win over and over again. The mom is vile.

My hope is that anyone looking to adopt from them ( they will try again) will at least see this and not get scammed by these evil people.

It says loan on THERE copy of the receipt. We didn't see HER copy of the receipt. The word loan could have been written sometime later. Just saying.

It wasn't her decision?!? She just admitted she didn't even want the baby, it's was the father(that probably won't stick around) that wanted to keep it. I can't imagine the nightmare childhood those 2 children had. Especially after they got older and saw this episode where their mother admitted to not wanting the second child. So sad.
Well sort of, they said his Mum didn't want him to go through it again so really it was Grandma that wanted to keep the baby, which I can understand. Imagine growing up though and realising if it wasn't for Grandma you'd have been given up. I hope the kids never see this.

Sadly "official" agencies are just as corrupt. And they are prohibitively expensive.

Or they couldn’t pass the home inspection or background checks. They had the money to buy a child from an impoverished young lady so the cost clearly wasn’t the issue.
If it was anything like the UK back then adoption was super difficult. You could be refused for having high blood pressure, or being overweight, age, all kinds of things. The hoops to jump through were a lot.

This is the risk with independant adoption without a lawyer. If they had used an adoption lawyer or an agency, the adoptive parents would have been informed of the risk of this couple, and would have been protected from excessive assistance payments. As it stands, they've lost the money. I'm an adoptive parent, and this is how it is.

This is why you have detailed adoption contracts with lawyers so that you can plan for situations like this.

JJ is trying to help the plantiff out by asking him three times. “If it wasn’t for the intention of adopting her baby would you have paid her rent” 😩 because it signify’s that it was their only intent.

Defendants are total pieces of work. They knew exactly the common law on paying for the baby is illegal.
Gotta get a lawyer before you do anything. When we adopted our child we could not pay any money to the birth mother even though she request some.

What horrible people. She knew she was never going to adopt out that baby. She learned how to scam from the last baby she gave up for adoption. That poor kid is probably going to have a tough life. Neither parent is working. He clearly can't hold a job and couldn't even remember what job he had at the time. Just sad all around.

I hate this loophole that the buying/selling of a baby isn’t happening, they’re just “helping” the mom who in exchange for their charitable generosity will “give” the baby like it’s a gift when we all damn well know what’s occurring 😠 Call a freaking spade a spade, government, it’s still the same sh*t that the laws were created to prevent in the first place.

The plaintiffs were desperate. It is a sad situation. They should have adopted a foster child through children's services. It's a shame because they look as if they would make great parents.

Help comes in many ways. However, sometimes help is a hindrance. A parent giving up a child is horrific, two parents living together and giving up a child breaks up possibly a whole relationship none of the other children benefit from this. Help perhaps by being a go to friend but not by taking away a child from its blood tie that loves it. Perhaps an agency could be set up whereby legally some people could perhaps be legal grandparents, aunts, cousins, to children prioviding a village of love.
Couple found out they get government assistance WITH kids. Think about it. Section 8, free utilities, free cable, free phone, free childcare, WIC, food stamps, medicaid...the list goes on. Sicker thing, so long as she doesnt marry the man, she gets more benefits.

What do you mean selling babies is illegal, that's what adoption is lol. You can call it an "adoption fee" or whatever you like, but money has to exchange hands to adopt a child, semantics aside, that is buying and selling.
