      One good thing... you can power wash the parts in a few years and reapply and it will look great again - no sanding, sandblasting, scraping, etc.

    Have you tried the cosmoline 42 in the bulk gallon can in either a spray bottle or a compressor spray paint gun or do you prefer the aerosol cans? I would think it may need to be thinned down a bit with mineral spirits but a gallon can would last for years of applications.

    • @LakesideAutobody
      @LakesideAutobody  Před 5 měsíci

      I have not tried it. I'll probably try it out one day and do a video on it - I really like how this stuff looks and dries myself - depends on the individual I guess. I'm not one for shiny thick paint on the undercarriage.

  • @peglegtoo
    @peglegtoo Před 5 měsíci +2

    Is the material tacky at all once it dries? will it come off on your hands as you handle parts? also, anything different between the two materials other than the color?

    • @LakesideAutobody
      @LakesideAutobody  Před 5 měsíci +1

      It will rub off a bit on your hands but I wear some rubber gloves when assembling the parts - it drys firm to a hard waxy like coating. The materials are the same other than the color. It is not tacky though after some time - in other words you won't have things sticking to it :)

  • @WilCoxon007

    Could you apply this over the power coated new parts for added protection? Or do the parts need to be stripped to metal before application for it to work properly

    • @LakesideAutobody
      @LakesideAutobody  Před 5 měsíci

      You can put it over powder coated new parts. You can put it over anything really. It just sticks and doesn't come off. Only way to get it off is mineral spirits or similar.

    I am 58 and getting my first new car ever in 2 weeks, a 2024 mazda cx-5, and I want it to last at least 20 years. I'm in Quebec where they salt the roads this time of year. I was planning on spraying all the metal suspension parts with fluid film as soon as I get it home but now you have me wondering if this cosmoline rp 342 might be a better way to prevent rust? What would you recommend more? Also thank you for all the help you've given me to do body repair and welding on my 99 miata.

    • @LakesideAutobody
      @LakesideAutobody  Před 5 měsíci

      Do this for the insides of the doors and other hollow panels - it works the best by far and is free - czcams.com/video/y05dNxt-nVc/video.html Use Cosmoline RP342 (Clear) for the bottom of the car. Keep all leaves and needle off of it and make sure seeds and stuff don't get trapped in the panels clogging the drains. The panels have to drain and the bottoms of them have to be greasy as there is no paint in the pinch welds at the bottoms of panels such as doors, hoods, decklids, etc :)

    • @scottmallory3507
      @scottmallory3507 Před 5 měsíci

      I just watched your video on rust prevention and I'm going to that on all the doors, hood and tailgate. I'm also going to order some cans of the cosmoline rp 342 clear you recommend. Thank you so much! 👌😄

    Jerry,
    Could I use POR15 or Rust Restorer to “arrest” a rusted area and then use Cosmoline over it? Inside of my “new” 55 trunk floor has surface rust I want to treat before top coating.

    • @LakesideAutobody
      @LakesideAutobody  Před 5 měsíci

      Absolutely - both products are probably tops when it comes to preventing rust. POR15 is great in the way it soaks into and grabs onto rusty metal and COS is a waxy coating that seals out moisture and never comes off. Thanks for watching Frank - have a good weekend :)

    Thx Jerry. I take it, you just have to spray it on bare metal or steel?? What would happen if someone painted their undercarriage, would you spray that on top, or not a good idea? Have a great weekend

    • @LakesideAutobody
      @LakesideAutobody  Před 5 měsíci +1

      You can spray it over the top for sure but you don't have to paint first. It works well both ways as long as the paint has been applied correctly and is not flaking off :)

    Wow, I never heard of this product. I wish I knew about it sooner. I just finished spraying all my cars with Fluid Film. Have you ever used this over rusty parts in the past? Does it work on more rusty cars?

    • @LakesideAutobody
      @LakesideAutobody  Před 5 měsíci +1

      I've heard stories from service guys that it was used on war planes, guns, etc. and like 50 years later the stuff was still good so I gave it a try on a new truck frame. I love it so far. I have used it on a rusty undercarriage too and it's holding up well so far. I can tell it's going to take many years before you'll have to re apply. I'll do future videos on the longevity of the product as well :)

    • @marcellemay7721
      @marcellemay7721 Před 5 měsíci +1

      I like the Fluid film. Its not quite as durable as the cosmoline. The cosmoline dries to a wax like consistency, where as the fluid film is kind of a greasy consistency when dry. The great thing about both of these products is that you can spray them right over surface rust and it'll stop the rust dead in its tracks. The other nice thing about the Fluid Film is that it'll creep into cracks and crevices where as the cosmoline won't. I think the cosmoline probably looks a lot better but the fluid film provides better protection in those hard to reach places but it probably needs to be reapplied more often.

    • @BCole-bj4lv
      @BCole-bj4lv Před 5 měsíci

      Ah, ok I will try it on the spots where the Fluid Film washes off this winter. We'll see how the cosmoline does. I noticed the Fluid film seems to disappear quickly from the hi-splash areas. Thanks. @@marcellemay7721

  • @designsinorbit
    @designsinorbit Před 5 měsíci +1

    Question- would you paint new parts first, then use this product? Or no paint at all?

    • @LakesideAutobody
      @LakesideAutobody  Před 5 měsíci +2

      The greatest thing about this stuff is no paint at all! That's the idea behind the flat black. Matter of fact it's better not to paint as the paint will just flake off eventually and cause other problems

  • @jimurrata6785
    @jimurrata6785 Před 5 měsíci

    Actually oils like tung and *_boiled_* linseed do polymerize. (that's why they are called 'drying' oils)
    Just like an alkyd enamel paint cures because the oxygen causes the resins to crosslink.
    The point of your video is not lost on me, and regular, or "straight' linseed oil will take decades to cure if not out in the sun.
    Have a great weekend Jerry! 👍

    I cringe at waxy products in the bodyshop, but if you're using it it's likely fine.
    Does it clean off easy enough if you're a little messy over an area to be painted later?

    • @LakesideAutobody
      @LakesideAutobody  Před 5 měsíci +1

      It cleans off easy with mineral spirits - in fact, it can be removed with mineral spirits too. You're right about grease, wax and silicone in a body shop - no good. Fast food too!
