This is a wonderful place. Visited many times and found something magical about it each time. Especially taking pictures under the 'gate'!

Great lecture that combines insights from architecture and the history of war. it looks as if my next trip will be to Ireland.

Visited Cahir Castle recently. Unfortunately at the time you were only allowed into the grounds at the time due to covid restrictions which are now lifted. The Rock of Cashel is actually not that far away either. St Declans Way hike which starts from Ardmore and has a round tower and goes over the Commeragh Mountains passes through both towns.

I never really know what to expect from Smarthistory each day, but I definitely didn't guess murder holes, lol. I love the diversity of these playlists - plates, ceilings, insanely intricate chalices, potential ritual objects, remote island structures, and who even knows what else is to come. I enjoy the way I'm kept guessing. 🙂
This place is very cool, though. I love the strategy built into it.

Wonder what the advancement of artillery was that brought the castle down. My guess would be the catapult that threw huge stones at high speeds along a flat trajectory.

1599 would have been during the age of the cannon. The walls were breached after two days of cannonade and use of petards.
