We had someone come and cut all of the hay, rake it and bail it. We got 65 round bails off the 30 acres we cut, not bad. We also did some in depth investigating round the property and started planning our deer habitats and deer plots. We are loving our new 45 acre farm in Mississippi!

That's a lot of hay you guys gave away. The general consensus I've seen is that you supply the land & hay field & you get half the bales if someone cuts it for you. That could end up being a sizeable chunk of change the way hay prices are going now days. Nothing like the prices up north, but still... That's money that could be used for stock, fencing, gates, equipment, lumber for animal shelters, hay barn, chicken, duck & turkey coops. And being down south now, you gotta raise some quail. Have you ever tried quail, cheese grits & eggs for breakfast yet ? Make your tongue want to slap fire from you it's so good. Best restaurants you'll find around your area will be the little ones tucked away on side roads. Ask the guys cutting your hay, they could tell you where to try. Sorry, I'm rambling again. Love it down here, never believe I was born in Oakland & raised in the Bay Area & other parts of Northern California. Got out of there many years ago. Okay, I'm outta here. Have a good one. 😊
We raised quail in California and I’m going to start them up again soon. We are only giving them this round because we didn’t need it, the community did , and they helped us with a few things so for us it was a good trade. In the future I will need hay so we will keep enough for us.

This is the best decision of your life. I grew up on a farm, and wish I would've never left. I know it's hard leaving "home" but you will come to accept it. Congrats and enjoy the ride! It's 100 percent worth it!

Those deer flies will bite through a shirt and they are vicious. Dove season opens in a couple of weeks. Frankie can get some good shotgun practice on some juicy birds!

When my sis hunts archery she says "Become the tree" lol
Mike, dig a small hole near the ditch with water and start pouring any kind of salt in a hole that can take on a little water!! Get some salt lick’s going! Deer love salt licks around old stumps!!! Watch for sales at co-op’s and grocery for cheap salt! It will draw deer as well as a green field!!!
Hey Mike, look into planting Sawtooth Oaks. They are the first oak trees to produce acorns of the season. Mine will begin dropping acorns in a couple of weeks. Probably 6 to 7 years to produce acorns. Most years the acorns are gone before Archery season opens but these trees will attract every deer in the area. Be aware of Yellow Jackets they nest in the ground in late August and September here, hard to escape them without multiple stings. Horse flies and Deer flies have a pretty bad bite. You guys seem to be our kind of people. Welcome to Mississippi.

Plant some persimmon trees. They grow all over north Mississippi and deer love the persimmons.

Welcome to farm life...strap up and have fun. That hay was pretty short to mow.
Buying a tractor go Deere or Kubota
Get them deer feeders going.
Go rent a no till drill and plant some switch grass like cave in the rock right in with the oaks.
2 years later you will thank me.

Glad to see you finally got the hay cut. You are doing the best thing letting someone else cut it. You win by getting the fields cut and they win by getting the hay to sell. I wouldn't give up the pasture area if you are going to get livestock one day. You will be loosing hay cutting area by exchanging it for grazing area when you get livestock so you will need all the pasture you can get. Its expensive putting it back into pasture after its all grown up. Looks like you have plenty of deer traffic already so it would probably be ok without letting it grow up.

I warned you about our weather Syd! Once in a blue moon you'll get a weatherman that can predict EVERYTHING but most of the time our weather people down in the south have no idea WHAT is going on. When promised rain, expect sun, when promised sun, expect rain!

I live in northeast Texas and I have Sawtooth Oaks . They grow really fast compared to the other types of oak trees and deer absolutely love the huge acorns that they drop. My sawtooth oaks are loaded with acorns right now. I have a group of about 10-12 deer that come through each evening and eat the acorns.

If Mississippi is anything like Texas you get a large ag exemption on your property taxes and hay harvesting qualifies. We have someone take the hay off our property and let him keep it all because it saves us much money in taxes and no labor for us
Mike, great place! Lots of potential for a kick ass deer property. One bit of advice it takes 20-30 years for a red oak to produce and they only produce every other year and this is not guaranteed. Two oaks that we plant on our land for deer are sawtooth and live oaks. Both prolific producers. I think you will be disappointed in the red oak. Love the videos. God Bless.

It took my brother 15 years to realize all the things he did to feed the deer food plots, trees, watering holes ended up not raising bigger healthier deer just more of them lol thinning of the herd is a must and not let them over populate the area

No doubt that baling equipment is EXPENSIVE. We would love to bale our own but @ $20K for used equipment, it doesn't make sense financially! We mowed 7 acres yesterday because nobody wants to fool with such a small field. FYI - removing the hay means you have removed tons of nutrients from the land that will need to be replaced. It might be better to mow it and let the clippings enrich the soil....but that's a lot of mowing! Take care, y'all!
We are sending off soul samples to see where we stand . A lot of the remnants get left on the pasture even after bales are removed so hopefully it helps some .
@@3MISSISSIPPI Sample your soul? 🤣 Samples will definitely help, especially with pH and lime needs. Grass loves nitrogen, but so do weeds, so that's the battle you face in a pasture!

Mike you need to plant some White Oaks didn't hear you mention them. My deer prefer these acorns. If you will get some fertilizer spkes an drive them in the ground around some of the tress

Y'all need to contact a state agricultural agent to give you information about managing your property. They could probably provide some good options. They might have incentives for certain crops or livestock. If you want to be in the hay business you need alfalfa. Mike is really enjoying his property.

Hey Mike! The cane you were looking at by the creek looked like bamboo to me. Deer will nibble the new growth and its good cover. Just watch because it'll spread like wildfire if left unchecked. Very beautiful place!

The wasp that you called a dirt dobber was a paper wasp..very painful sting...they will build nest under your lean too and corners of your porch and sawtooth oaks are awesome to plant..Beautiful Property.the place where the trees were kind of this is a great place to hunt if those are oaks and producing especially during bow season because they can easily find them !

That's wonderful they got that many bales off your land, I agree that if you have a good relationship with the neighbors, you don't need haying equipment, the maintenance and cover for all of it, that's great how they fixed the ditch area also, I think it's fantastic you and Mike are getting the realization that it's all yours, to do as you want with this beautiful property, I think Mike has got some good planned with the dear harvesting area, thanks for sharing Syd, Mike and Frankie

Hay is worth a lot of money, can do round bales or square bales, don't give it away. Where I am from people cut it, and bale, and charge a price. The bales are worth a lot more. And easy to sell.

Hello Mike sense you have oak tree on your new land think of what furniture you can make out of oak
21:19 pine trees perfect for a bow hunting stand.
You have deer for sure and in the area your want to let grow up make sure you use your tractor and Bush hog to make some trails in that area. Make it easier for you and the deer to get in and out. Deer follow trails.
I had a deer feeder solar and they knew about the time it would throw out the feed and would be there just waiting lol. Loved watching them. I also put pond about 100 yards away with salt blocks buried in the ground. The deer would spend a hour digging in the ground to get the salt.
Hunting season is coming up fast. Good time to put game cameras to check the deer timing moving across your land.
They did put some up and there has been lots of activity 😉

Smart move on the hay, haying equipment is a huge expense I do hay on shares with a bunch of people and it works out great for both of us. I don’t know about Mississippi deer but Maryland deer make the whole farm their habitat, I have a feed block 35’ from my living room couch and we watch deer every night.
They love the pear tree in the front and I watch them everyday

Mike. There is an app for your phone that you can take a picture of the leaves and it will give you the best idea of what tree it is. It's called Audubon Trees. I used it for years when I was land surveying on large tracts of land and property owners wanting to know what they had so they could decide what to keep vs cut down. Keep it up.

White oaks has BIG acorns and add lime around the oaks ,will purduce alot of acorns.......JS
Oaks are OK chestnuts are the bomb plant a row or two along that ditchline they grow fast and start to produce faster than any other tree other than maybe a fruit tree you will pull deer to your farm for miles away your farm can be OK for deer or it can be the envy of every big buck hunter American chestnuts will keep and hold the maximum number of deer your farm can sustain
Mr crouch ,,what you plant matters a ton ,,in your area what happens in winter is nobody leaves anything green for deer to eat and they move on to find green food ,,so if you are managing for the deer , it really matters.
Canebreaks are quite common in the midsouth.
Also don't wear any bootcut jeans with tennis shoes this is the time of year for ground Yellow Jackets they'll fly up your pants leg and sting the crap out of you. Ticks and Chiggers will also be a problem.
I'd also get a windvane style mineral feeder and some mineral and place them near any blackberry patches you should have near the creek. Deer will use the mineral just like cattle and deer will feed on the blackberries too.

well , take your time , however , look on line for small round balers and you maybe surprized . if have the $$ small kubota tractors (B , LX , L) with tiny mower , tedder and baler available . EVEN for those BCS power handles . just for your thinking . wise to take time and wait anyway , but even the search will be fun .
Poison ivy is out there , not poison oak. Two kinds in Mississippi.
Ya all need to confer with your local Ag folks about your plan to make sure your on the right track. As for your tree line, I would brush hog or forest much the tree areas to keep your tree healthy. Put some mineral blocks out that will bring them out and ya can see what ya got.

Sweet Gums are actually one of the best trees for nature. People don't like them because they make bad fire wood and the DAMN gum balls!! They're one of a few trees that Hummingbirds will nest. You've a very beautiful property! Having water, cover, pasture, and Oak trees, all you need is tree stands! I'd put in several small plots instead of a bigger one. And a protein situation. A mineral lick. Fantastic property!!
