Haven't had this one, but the first release of the 3-4 year old Dream to Dram is a lovely whisky. It was here...and then it was gone.
I was lucky enough to spot it one day, and though I'd planned to pick up something else entirely, my hand went right past the original choice and glommed onto the D to D. Price wasn't too bad and I'd never seen it before, nor had I heard of Kingsbarns Distillery at that point. To me, it was well worth the chance taken! A lot of soft floral flavours, light fruits, pears, some honey and vanilla with spicing at the end. I don't mind youthful, I think it offers a different experience.
I'm not a huge fan of the Lowland distilleries, but that's likely because most of what we see here is the generic, mass produced, low ABV and caramel coloured offerings. I was hoping to find Bladnoch 10 at some point, it had such great reviews a year or so back. But having been in contact with the distillery, it appears they just couldn't break through the LCBO's strict and stringent (and very expensive) criteria for product display. The bigger corporate company releases are definitely preferred by those who do the buying for the provincial stores. Have to wonder how those original few bottles from Kingsbarns slipped through!
Heading for Nova Scotia this weekend. I'll be looking for a couple of things there. Glen Breton releases, and maybe something from Downriver. Their rye sounds great.
We're delivering my uncle Bob's World War II collection to the Naval Museum in Halifax. He kept literally everything from his time in service with the Navy Merchant Marine and the museum is thrilled to accept it, especially so close to Remembrance Day. Bob was stationed in Halifax and always spoke fondly of those memories. My cousin and I are making the journey together. Her dad died at the end of 2019, and then everything went crazy. She had to do so much alone due to the massive number of restrictions. When she told me she wanted to do this, I insisted on going with her. I can't think of a better way to honour the memory of a man I admired, respected, and loved so much.
Hope you have a great couple of weeks up and coming! Will check in after we get back.
    Cheers, my friend 🥃🥃

Awesome history, and so cool you are able to create time to travel out East and honour your uncle and the contributions of so many with brining his WWII collection to the Naval Museum in Halifax. I hope the trip is amazing.

Not really had many Lowlands expressions, though Bladnoch really hits the spot for me. Not had any Kingsbarns, but any Glenkinchie I've had, I've enjoyed. I see me local has a bottle of that 12. May just pick it up. Cheers Jon and have a great weekend too.

I need to get a bottle of Bladnoch. I hear great things. The Glenkinchie is good. A little easy drinking for me

Lowland Scotches to me are most similar to Irish whiskies. I consider Glengoyne Lowland and I think they make fantastic whisky... stunning as a matter of fact.

Good to see some Lowland whisky reviews. Not enough of them and there are an increasing number of distilleries. Had the Dream to Dram Kingsbarns which is ex bourbon and STR barriques. Liked this one a lot. Also worth trying is the Glenkinchie distillers edition which is Amontillado cask finish and from memory about 10 years old. I prefer this to the 12 year old. Had a great tour round Glenkinche this year. The back story re Johnnie Walker is fascinating.

I loved the taste of Dream to Dram I had. That Amontillado sounds interesting! Thanks for sharing, cheers!

I haven't had a chance to try the Kingsbarn yet, so this was super interesting!🙂

The flavours were excellent. I did enjoy their Dream to Dram, release a little more, but I think with a bit of time here, they have a cracker!

  • @edmontonscotchclub4684

Nice review Jon! When I cracked my bottle it definitely took a bit of time to
Open up. I think this stuff is going to be really good at 8-10 years!

It has developed over the week, and I have no doubt that with a couple more years, it's going to be outstanding! The flavours are excellent already. Cheers!

I Haven’t been around in awhile nice to watch one of your reviews. Lowland; gentle, lighter (think less intense) malty notes, citrus based, sweet often with caramel or toffee notes, plays well with sherry, but I personally find even better with amontillado. That’s been my limited experience anyway.

I love Lowland scotch even though it usually goes contrary to my preferred style, which is bold and strong. I welcome any Glenkinchie, Auchentoshan, or Bladnoch... Haven't tried any Kingsbarns yet, but I disliked Wemyss five year old Spice King...

This is their own liquid and a much different release. That said, the taste of Dream to Dram was better for me.

Just picked up a bottle yesterday at the Fort Mac liquor store. I was hoping for more of a Sherry influence, but was pleased by the Funk and.”dirty” character, for lack of a better term. A lot going on and look forward to coming back to it when it settles down a bit.

@@WhiskyNeighbour Nope, I haven't had the fortune to find it. But I was mentioned a great whisky, or shield I say, sprit you should try. It's the Macalonies searaidh braiche. I have 2 bottle opened one, and it's phenomenal. Just slightly over your preferred limit, but I was mentioning that there are only 2 left and kegncork, so you should grab one. it truly is a remarkable thick sherries and toffee sprit. Quig could vouch for me!
